the fact that sherlock is just casually like [takes out huge folder from the depths of his coat] here is my folder on all matters john watson. let’s start with my masterpiece, the vitruvian john, which i crafted by hand and on which i have added any and all relevant details of john’s physique and body proportions, including but not limited to information on all of his allergies, average food intake, and blood type. now, next we have–

Actually, okay, let’s imagine a world there Sherlock is basically completely obsessed with John– everything about John, to the most minute detail– and it’s totally platonic. What would you call this? How would you describe this?

John is… Sherlock’s idol? No, too much like a crush. John is… the focus of Sherlock’s largest ongoing experiment and/or his ‘special interest’? No, but Sherlock’s human, and they tell us he’s not autistic. Besides, Sherlock’s still into cases in Series 3, see, ‘cause he never fell in love. But maybe he’s just recovering from the dislocation and stress of returning to London after awhile only to find his old life gone, so this is like… stress knitting. He wants to feel closer to his old life (here represented by John and ‘scientific’ research), so he delves into… scientific research about John. He just goes hilariously overboard, ‘cause that’s just… Sherlock. Who even knows about that man? What even goes on in his ‘funny old head’, as Mrs Hudson once said in ASiB? Maybe we don’t need to understand. Sherlock’s just so *weird*, isn’t he?

The thing is, the thing that really annoys me and makes me come up with a stance like how I can’t imagine a dialogue with someone who feels this is platonic, is that this implied non-Johnlock interpretation is so ungenerous to the show and writers as well as Sherlock as a character. It dismisses his depth and interiority; it assumes that Sherlock doesn’t have normal, ordinary human feelings just like we do. It disagrees with John’s frequent assertion that Sherlock’s ‘flesh and blood’ and assumes his motivations are inscrutably alien or weird.

The fact is, it’s that simple: if you think Sherlock Holmes is flesh and blood, this is clearly Sherlock’s version of a pretty cute infatuation. Or you don’t, and you think he’s just… not flesh and blood. He’s made of tobacco paper, beaker glass and logic. And that’s just so 2010. So like I said, different worlds.

John's of course very upset and (I think) leaves Sherlock for a while. They start getting gifts coming to 221B and Sherlock has to explain them away (Molly gives them a milk delivery.)
