the disappointment in his eyes..
son why are you doing this to me
I was thinking how many ways Isayama could have handled things better. Namely the criminal underworld and the Ackerpowers, and I always find myself eyeballing the Witcher series when I think of those things. Witchers themselves are super mutants, but thereās still a myriad of drawbacks. They push their bodies to absolute extremes for the sake of hunting, and their average life expectancy is indeterminable, because they always die hunting. Theyāre infertile, the process to become a Witcher is --
very unpleasant, and if I recall correctly, their numbers are very small because the process to become one itself usually ends up killing them. Theyāre incredibly strong, since theyāre built to hunt, but this doesnāt ever make them invincible. Hell, even the MC, Geralt goes out because a fucking peasant impales him in the gut with a pitchfork. Humans or non-humans never get ruled out. Itās a very interesting playing field despite its fantastical setting. The criminal underworld isvery fleshed out. Thereās the juxtaposition of the poor and the rich. Hell, an entire city is ruled by the criminal underworld and like this fictitious corrupt religious group. The criminal underworld overthrows a king and murders a good portion of his armyāthese fuckers even play a huge role in governing the end of a massive fucking war for the North.Ā
And every time I see this shit, or any other really well thought-out criminal-esque underworld, I always find myself looking back at SnKand going āwhat the fuck?āĀ
I will never not be salty about the way Isayama handled this shit. Why an actual fucking underground world?⦠Why make Ackerpowers such a fucking cop out instead of something genuinely interesting? Like, could you imagine part of the reason the Ackerman clan started to go extinct was because their males were being genetically mutated to come out sterile? Or if the awakening wasnāt just āhurdur Iām now Goku b/c a toad pissed on my foot uwu,ā but insteadsomething incredibly excruciating and unbearable? Imagine for a moment they followed suit with the children in route to becoming Witchersā in that, the process to become one could very well kill them. Or that maybe their emotions could be intentionally suppressed thereafter the awakening, thus furthering the idea that the Ackermans were nothing more than just their killing machines. Just⦠Ughhhhh. Come on man. āuwu my mommy died i live in the underground w/ no sunlight uwuā
This is some powerful NaCl here bucko.
But I feel it. Sorta.
I mean on one hand I donāt know jack shit about the Witcher series (though oe of my brothers does and could easily talk my head off about it), nor do I actually know much about the fantasy genre in general.
This is perhaps funny considering my main fandom for many years was Fire Emblem. But I digress. Really all I want from my plots is a modicum of sense. Was InuYashaĀ stupid as all hell? Yes. But was an effort made to make the main villain a little more deep and interesting than justĀ āhurr durr evil lolā? Absolutely. Thatās really all I need to be fairly content. Iāll always find something to be dissatisfied with, but thereās a difference betweenĀ āit could have been betterā andĀ āit reallyā¦should have been better.ā
SnK is kinda in the latter category for me. Thereās so much potential in the worldbuilding that it feels gross to hop around and see other things doing it better. I donāt think I need to reiterate that SnK canāt operate on the same level as anything elseāany novel series, for instance, or game. Manga creation does not function the same way. The story is intended to be a little flexible.
That said, while I donāt think using the Witcher examples would work very well for the Ackerblood thing, I do think some depth could have been added to it to make it interesting. For example, why was Kenny a killer and his sister wasnāt? Were his grandfather/father/mother/cousin/whatever also killers? The idea that theyāre a bloodline put together for this purpose doesnāt work very well considering the worldās limited history (just over 100 years iirc). Like thatās maybe two or three full generations, depending on how old people get.Ā
I mean, you could make up a lot of things to make it work well: like Ackermans bond to people and will feel a particular protective instinct so perhaps in the past they were bonded to the kingās children from a young age and so it was inevitable that they would fulfill their role as protector of the royal family just by nature of being bonded to them/raised among them. (This is something that could have made Kenny and Uriās relationship super interesting and complex! Also see: Mikasa and Eren. And Levi and whoever he gets close to.)Ā
Thatās just a spitball thought, obviously, not intended to be taken very seriously, but I do agree with the idea that there should have been more to it thanĀ āuwu poor babbu abused and misunderstood.ā Like, are we supposed to care about this aspect of the series?Ā āCause I donāt. I only care about how I can make it make senseāand thatās kinda sad.
Everything about this commercial compelled me to purchase both a PS2Ā and this game back in 2002. Everything about this commercial.
Especially the song.
12 year old me made some wild ass decisions
I hear that.

SWEET JESUS THE MEMORIESā¦
does utada hikaru know how many people made that same wildass decision just because of how good her song was

Ishida really is a genius when it comes to character development.
All of his characters are realistic and have complex personalities. They have good sides but they also have flaws. They have people they love and people they want to protect. But they also have people they resent, people they are jealous of. Sometimes they hurt others without intending to and do things without realizing what the consequences of their actions might be. But they are also capable of consciously commiting brutal and horrifying acts of violence. They make mistakes. Some take responsibility for their actions, others donāt. All of them are driven by different emotions. Some are fighting for the sake of love, some only care about themselves and their own selfish goals, and others are willing to risk their own lives for the sake of something bigger. Ā
The characters of Tokyo Ghoul live in a fucked up world but, of course, that doesnāt excuse their actions. Ishida does a very good job at portraying this ā he does not hesitate to show us the ugliest sides of human/ghoul nature and how the struggle to survive might bring out the worst in an individual. But despite his story being filled with violence, he always presents everything so carefully and never glorifies the destructive behaviours of his characters.
Ishida shows us all of this through the eyes of Ken Kaneki ā a completely ordinary person that loses everything not because he was āspecialā or āchosen by fateā but because of an accident. He was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time with the wrong person. And whatās worse ā life hadnāt been easy on him even before his humanity ā the last thing keeping him together ā was stripped away from him. After that it all went downhill. Losing contact with his closest friend and being forced to ācast aside his weaknessesā in order to become strong enough to fit in this world was all it took Kaneki to completely lose his sanity and along with it ā his desire to live. He really is the unfortunate protagonist of a tragedy.
The world Ishida created is unfair to some and full of cruelty but itās also very beautiful. His characters canāt simply be described as āgoodā and āevilā. Thereās more to them than meets the eye.
Iām genuinely impressed by how good Ishidaās writing is!
I feel all of that in my bones. Especially the purple prose bullshit. I got sucked into it once when I was in high school. I thought that if I used the Thesaurus for every word Iād sound smart or something. Decided I wanted to pursue a career involving writing, and that shit got worked out of me so goddamn fast. Learned a whole lot, and the first thing was to never use a big word where a small one would make do. Never understood it, but when I did? Everything else started to make sense too. (c)
Then you come to Tumblr, and motherfuckers wonāt even RP with you if you arenāt humping a Thesaurus, or using this ass-pull poem-prose nonsense. Every other sentence contains a simile or some really shitty metaphor about how whenever Levi walks thereās thunder on his heel. Then you have all of this āhe stared at u w/ his oculars/orbs/spheresāā nonsense. I really wish people would understand that small words are used because theyāre far more powerful than any superfluous big word.
I have noticed some elitism regarding thesaurus-wielding people. I personally opt for a plain writing style (the kind I write all my fanfiction in), and while I donāt mind writing with someone who has a more elaborate style, I really donāt want to write with someone who canāt stop regurgitating the same confusing garbage over and over. Like just because the words sound nice together doesnāt mean youāre actually conveyingĀ or communicatingĀ anything.Ā
The truly sad thing is that 80% of these fucks will claim that what theyāre doing is writing prose-poetry, but clearly theyāve never set foot in a goddamn literature classroom or theyād know that what theyāre writing isnāt poetry or prose: itās just a bunch of words together.
When you sit down and decide you have perfected your style of writing, you are telling the world that you are not a writer, nor have you ever been.Ā
Writing, like all the arts, is an ongoing practice session. Musicians and painters and master carpenters donāt stop building on what they already know; they donāt stop trying to expand their minds to make what they already know betterāmore effective.
So as a writer there is no particular star in the sky weāre ever trying to reach: we only seek to better ourselves and our craft. Even writers who are perfectionists will tell you that thereās no such thing as perfect writing. You can aspire to become a better writer because that is always an attainable goal. You cannot aspire to become perfect at writing, because there is not an ultimate plateau to reach where youāre Done Learning. Youāre neverĀ done learning.
Tumblr RP assumes a plateau. Tumblr RP will tell you that the technical aspects of writing (a part of the craft easily bettered, btw) matter more than characterization, and that presentation of your writing (preferably in a pretty container theme!) matters more than the content itself.
In other words, Tumblr RP (specifically the indie scene) is for people who are trying to have fun but generally do not care very much for writing as a constantly-evolving processāand pay very little attention to the fact that RP is an interactive writing exercise.
Writers who try to get involved in thisĀ ācommunityā of not-writers tend to find themselves frustrated and disappointed. And I think universally the disappointment comes from seeing all the wasted potential, like pretty decent characterization ruined by purple prose writing, other writers giving up and leaving early on, lack of interaction, dropped projects with no communication as to why itās being dropped (itās just always assumed the thread isnāt cared about anymore, but as a writerĀ I know why I drop my own projects and so itās SUPER FUCKING FRUSTRATING to have an RP thread dropped by a partner with no reason as to why).Ā Then again, I donāt think I can forget to mention that like half of Tumblr RPers are in it primarily for shipping anyway, so if youāre part of their OTP youāll generally get shoved aside and ignored for weeks while they constantly reply to their main ship person and eventually come back around to you.
Like jfc if you want to RP shippy shit with just one person just make it a private blog for you and the other personāor take it to email or something. I just?? Do not??? Understand that mentality???
Iām here for the girls who unwillingly consented to sex or sexual acts because they were in a situation where they didnāt feel as if they had the right to say no and now feel violated but donāt feel like they can say they were raped or molested.
this is probably one of the most important text posts i have ever seen because i feel like this is a HUGE issue among teenagers especially young girls in todayās social culture and nobody talks about it. nobody tells you that you were in fact abused and sometimes it takes you years to finally realize what happened to you was wrong, and itās really scary and confusing! we need to teach each other that ārapeā or āmolestationā can happen in many circumstances and not just the ones we are taught!!!!
Team "Holy fuck I really wanna be your friend but either I can't work up the courage to talk to you or every time I talk to you I feel like I'm bothering you or making you really uncomfortable".
iām happy, onii-chan. but more than that, i am sad. arenāt you just going to do the same thing again?
Hi again, anon from before. Yes, I'm referring to Ć la carte. No, I don't believe you can find it officially translated. There are some fan translations, but it only goes up to vol 1. I found this by searching forums. I'm not too sure about the details of their engagement, but from what I can gathered, since Leonora already approved of Ryou(from their first meeting), it was a part of some agreement between her and Alice. Although Alice isn't in any hurry to get married she hasn't told him, yet.
Hi, anon! Thanks for the heads up! This is very interesting! I mean, Ryou is not from prestigious family line, and Alice only wanted to āadopt a stray dogā as her aide, I donāt understand why Leonora wanted them to get married. But maybe Nakiri family values cooking skill more than wealth and fame. So I think Leonora ships them XD sheās somewhat childish and as quirky as Alice, what a cute mother :3
Iām also curious why Alice is okay with it, like, she accepted she would marry Ryou, just like that??? *clutches heart* Iāll try to buy the Japanese LN I need to know everything about this!!!
Ayahina is strong!
That awesome moment when your headcanon finally becomes canon. Tsundere!Ayato really gives me life.
May Ayahina ship sail smoothly into the glorious sunset :ā)))))
Iāve been waiting for Kirishima sibling reunion since 2013. Finally⦠*cries*
