how would you go about training someone out of excessive apologising. she assumes people are upset at her and I want to train it out of her, but I'm not sure how to reward someone for not doing something or mark the reward as for doing that. every time she does it, talking about it just feels like punishing her for it, and it's a group setting so I can't control how others respond to her, either. I'd like to help her confidence and feel like she belongs in the group, and that she's not in a precarious position with us at all, but the assumption that people are upset with her as the default isn't good for her.

Yeah OK this one is pretty simple

First every time she apologises for something thank her for what she's apologising about

For example "sorry I talk so much" you reply "thank you for sharing all of your thoughts with us we really enjoy it"

This can take a little bit of thought to get right you don't want to be thanking her for apologising, but after a while she should pick up the habit. Once she starts using "thank you for" instead of "I'm sorry for" start rewarding her for that

This is much easier if you have the type of relationship where you can tell her to do things directly because you can much more easily get her to start saying "thank you" instead of "I'm sorry" which will really speed up the process

As a follow up, if she isn't specifying what she's apologizing it can help to ask what she is for. Is she apologizing out of a gut reaction, or is this something she is considering. For a lot of girls, having to confront the reason for what she is saying if she hasn't yet can be enough to reorient her thoughts and realize that she doesn't have a reason to say sorry.

If she does have an answer for you though, then saying thank you is a great strategy from there.

calling too much attention to it kinda puts someone in a corner and might make her feel worse for taking up everyone's time with trying to help her, even though everyone else really wants to help and it's coming from a good place, it might be counterproductive. sometimes maybe you do need to just brush past the apology and try not to give apologies and explanations too much attention in themselves, because attention is a positive reinforcement of whatever behaviour it's responding to, and if all the attention she's getting is for that behaviour, she might feel as though she's not getting attention for the things she wants to be getting attention for, and push her out of the space entirely.

as much as you care about someone, it's not always your responsibility or place to try and modify someone else's behaviour.

as someone who is a chronic apologizer over nothing, I would prefer less attention being drawn towards it vs every single time I apologize I feel like I'm being berated or scolded for it. so personally I uh. would fucking hate if every time I apologized unnecessarily I got basically scolded for it. it would make me feel worse and like the person im talking to wants me to go away and stop talking because I'm just bothering them. yk? like the stuff talked about in the original post would help but. in moderation and ONLY if I wanted it

as both a chronic apologiser and someone with severe social anxiety- both mostly birthed of trauma an a lifetime of notoriously awful expectations- i keep looking at the asker's mention of how their trainee feels that her place in the group is precarious, and she feels she doesn't fit in. a gentle suggestion here would be (assuming the asker's group is okay with it) is to have other members build a one-on-one dynamic with her as well, to have check ins outside of the group setting that aren't necessarily directly tied to the asker themselves.

it's easier to believe you are wanted and accepted by a group- especially an established one- when different members actually show that they're welcoming you. to have other members reach out and show they want you in some capacity can make a huge difference.

it's of course not a requirement, but if she's more comfortable with other individuals in the group, not just the one fragile link she has to it, there is a chance she may become more comfortable and that her confidence can build up from there.

would also like to add that while "training" may seem appealing, there is a chance that the issue lies deeper, and it may be tied to something you shouldn't try to "fix."

encourage; don't discourage.

encourage in a way that lets her feel safe. have your group encourage her in ways that feel welcoming (especially outside of the group setting). learn where else she's instinctively shying away, and try to encourage her there, too.

but most importantly? try to talk with her about it, but be patient. let her open up in her own time, if she wants to.

there's a chance she may not open up; there is a chance that she may never quite feel comfortable with the group.

whether you can accept that possibility is something you will have to consider for yourself.
