[I’m really sorry for the lack of activity over here. My muse for Merrill has been very finicky. I might put this blog on hiatus if she doesn’t start cooperating soon.]
[I lowkey ship Merrill with basically everyone in the Kirkwall Gang, oops.]
Merrill’s exuberant reply is enough to renew a bit of Hawke’s guilt for having to leave her in these unpleasant quarters —- but then he remembers she’d been excited enough about Lowtown at first. It isn’t hard to imagine she’d face the prospect of Darktown with the same enthusiasm, something that he may actually have to put to the test soon. Well, it should be nice to have an optimist as company for a change, and his smile remains, if a little softer around the edges now.
‘Something infinitely more exciting than errands,’ Hawke is able to confirm. ‘I’m going to visit Guardswoman Aveline, owner of the largest frown in Kirkwall and partaker in the least amount of fun.’ In fairness, of course, he really is fond of Aveline, in some peculiar way. Maybe it’s because however much she tries his patience, he knows he’s a thorn thrice as large in her side. ( And part of him recognises that she is generally RIGHT about things, the salvageable part of his conscience given voice. )
A mercenary and an alienage girl, strolling among the nobility of Hightown. They’ll make an interesting sight, if nothing else; something for people to talk about. For good measure, Hawke extends a hand. ‘You know how it goes, though,’ he adds. ‘One minute you’re chatting to an old, grumpy friend, the next they’re asking if you can buy them …. scented bath oils or something, but the shopkeeper’s dog ate them. We could be in for an untold number of adventures, Merrill. I hope you’re ready.’
“Is her frown really that large?” Merrill had her doubts. How would you find out something like that, anyway? Hold a frowning contest? That seemed a bit odd, even for humans. Then again, they did a lot of things Merrill found strange...
Oh well. She liked Aveline, even if she did frown a lot. Merrill felt a lot safer, knowing someone like her was part of the city guard. It wasn’t just a job for her - that was another odd thing about humans, Merrill had noticed; so many of them did jobs they didn’t even enjoy, or that they weren’t even good at! - Aveline wanted to help people. The people of Kirkwall couldn’t have asked for a better guard.
She would have taken his hand regardless of what the day’s adventure was to be. Scented bath oils, or visiting friends, or whatever trouble they managed to find, a day out on the town with Hawke was bound do be entertaining. “Of course I’m ready! Does Aveline know we’re coming? Does she need our help with something?”

She was the first person I thought of when I finished it and I went C R A P
[S A M E this is going to DESTROY her.]
[Trespasser spoilers under the cut.]
Thinking about how torn up Merrill would be about the choice between helping Solas - restoring her peoples’ former glory has been a lifelong fight for her - or fighting against him because she loves her friends and her current lot in life and thinks Thedas is both fixable and worth saving.
I Have Been Waiting
ofprimalmagic:
“Can you do the tents?” she intones to her, taking a few steps back, still facing Merrill with a smile. She’ll send word to others once they reach a city, but she was happy to have Merrill here beyond all else. “And then you can sleep–” she can tell how little the woman has been getting from the shine in her eyes, “And I’ll make up some food” she offers gently.
“Of course!” These tents were different than setting up an aravel for camping, but also much less complicated. Merrill had them ready in no time - and she only tried to put the tarp up wrong side-out once.
“What are we having for dinner? You were always so much better at this part than me; I always undercook everything...”
bloodiedrogue:
It’s hard not to be taken in by the smile on Merrill’s face, hard not to return it in kind. He’d been full of sourness his first morning in Gamlen’s miserable little home, though it hadn’t been too much worse than the humble lodgings he’d been used to while growing up. It was more the principle behind his uncle’s duress, the idea that mother would have to risk herself among Lowtown’s thugs because of it. As soon as they’re out of that place, Hawke’s going to make a point of replicating Merrill’s enthusiasm for the new experience.
‘Not a single mugging or murder,’ he assures her. ‘Do you think they only murder other muggers? It would weed out some of their competition, and give us room to walk ten metres without being threatened at knifepoint. A better Kirkwall, truly.’
But speaking of better Kirkwalls—-there are some parts of the city that qualify already, places where the buildings aren’t patched together with rotting wood and the dubious stains on the pavements are actually cleared away in the morning. If Merrill doesn’t see them, she’s going to base her entire perceptions of humans based on the types she sees lurking around here…
Based on the way they treat elves, Hawke realises with a slight sinking feeling, and wonders what kind of defence he could make to that.
‘I’m sure you have many fascinating things to be working on here,’ he continues, deciding to dismiss the idea for now, ‘but I’m headed towards Hightown. The view’s better that way, if you’re interested in joining me.’ A hesitation, then. ‘There’s more Templars, mind you, but I’m pretty sure they’re only posted there to look pretty. Wink at them and they’ll leave you alone—-seems to work for me.’
His smile was so beautiful, like he really meant it. Not like the smiles she was used to getting from her clanmates; awkward, apprehensive smiles, that gradually became more and more nervous before transforming into full-on contemptuous glares. She hoped he never looked at her like that...
Winking? Would that really make a difference? The Templars were by far the most terrifying people in Kirkwall - even the muggers and murderers couldn’t compare. Merrill wasn’t particularly worried about herself personally. She knew how to handle herself in a fight, better than ever now that she was tagging along with Hawke from time to time. It was the other elves in the alienage she was worried about. Anyone with eyes could see how poorly Kirkwall’s other citizens thought of them, and she had a feeling she wasn’t the only mage hiding in the slums... If she was discovered, it would surly bring the wrath of the Templars down on her neighbors.
Oh well; if Hawke was with her, nothing bad would happen. He always knew what to do.
“I’d love to!” She knows she sounds a little over eager, but she can’t bring herself to be embarrassed about it. For now. “I’ve only been up there a few times; the gardens have such pretty flowers... Are you going to run errands, or is it something more exciting?”
