bucky draws an index finger up to his lips, the unyielding thrust of his brow down over his eyes & firm-set mouth as telling as anything he could say out loud. footsteps pad evenly around the corner. he has his shoulder blades flat up against the wall, head tipped in a way that he can see the movement shadowing through the hallway without being detected.
he doesn’t yet reach for his gun, instead turning his palm up to give the universal signal for STAY until the sound recedes away paired with a thump & creak of a door closing.
bucky waves his hand forward, fingers crooked. a frown rives his features & claws a furrow into his forehead. ❛ in this case, keeping quiet is what keeps us alive. ❜ his voice hushes, barely there in the dark of the space they occupy. ❛ —– this way. if we’re quick we can get in & out before they even know we were here. ❜
the serious man with his pinched face and deadpan expression is not klaus’s first choice in company --he likes to keep things light & this guy’s one frown away from (being as serious as) a heart attack --but their current situation does not leave room for pickiness. not to mention klaus gets the idea that this guy and his extremely furrowed brow is more than competent to save his scrawny ass if things go even more sideways.
klaus is reminded of luther for a moment; perhaps it’s the way his companion’s mouth sits rigidly above his chin. or maybe it was the ease with which he bosses klaus around. klaus presses his back against the wall as he channels his best 007, dark eyes sweeping the hallway as they wait.
while not dying is a pretty good incentive for regular folks, klaus finds the prospect of a good old fashioned near death experience enticing. klaus is about to protest when he’s motioned to follow. instead he opts for some clarification, “and where are we, exactly?”

the great thing about new yorkers is that they will go anywhere and pay any price as long as someone else tells them it’s worth the cost. the day’s events unravel as they have been as of late --klaus set up outside of his current haunt, a small cafe whose waiter is generous with the refills and easy on the eyes. a steady march of desperate people longing to know their future and scorned lovers all filling klaus’s pockets. life couldn’t be any better, and yet --it was all beginning to seal the air from his lungs.
atmospheric electricity sends a shiver up klaus’s spine, the hair raising sign that something important is about to happen. klaus’s cheeks pull inward as he swallows, praying mr. cute coffee would stop by and top him off as curious eyes study the gleaming creature approaching his table. compliments are klaus’s first language, his best satin smooth response is meant to flatter, “honey, any man dumb enough to cheat on you isn’t worth the cost of a palm reading,” his smile is warm as hands rest, palms face up, on the table between them, “for you, sweetheart, it will be $20.”
