Taxidermy Tuesday. Ever wonder what’s at the heart of most of our larger taxidermy animals… sometimes a lot of wood.

Got a cool early Christmas gift from my father last night: a replica thylacine skull.
The thylacine, also known as the Tasmanian tiger, was the largest carnivorous marsupial to survive into modern times. Remains have been found on Mainland Australia and evidence suggests it’s range also included Papua New Guinea and Kangaroo Island, though it’s range was restricted to Tasmania well before Europeans arrived. The resemblance to canids is due to the process of convergent evolution, as it would have filled a similar ecological niche to canids. Thylacines are believed to have become extinct in 1936 with the death of Benjamin at the Hobart Zoo, the last known individual to be killed in the wild was killed in 1930. Their extinction was due to a combination of factors including hunting (due to being seen as a nuisance animal), competition with feral dogs introduced by Europeans, disease, and habitat destruction. There are reports of more recent thylacine sightings but these remain unconfirmed.
How do you skin birds while preserving the feathers?
Hmm, I wasn’t sure how exactly to explain it so I made a super simplified illustrated taxidermy tutorial! There’s a lot more to it than this but this is just the basics of how taxidermy works.
