boyfriend first, then cigarette
hold on, so the moment Neil says “do it” when Betsy’s trying to convince the everyone to have Andrew go off his medication, that’s the first time in the whole series he’s put someone/something before Exy, including himself *screams*
Doesn’t even consider for a second how that will affect the Exy season, just immediately does what he can to make it happen because he needs so badly for Andrew to be better or at least have a chance at being better, even when it might mean Neil loses out on the one thing he has been holding onto (insert Nicky’s speech about how Exy can’t love you back and you need someone to hold onto, this shows how Neil has been holding onto Andrew and how much that has changed his priorities).
#first of all I absolutely love this moment in the novels and I think I've written about this scene in several of my Meta posts#second to some people in the tags: this is absolutely meant to be an Andreil moment haha. I'm not quite sure why some readers seem to#believe that Andreil moments only “count” after Andrew's confession but that's not how romance in novels actually works. In a slow-burn#romance that takes place over 3 novels there are meant to be romantic moments PRIOR to the couple getting together so that#the romance is properly foreshadowed & readers aren't left wondering “where the fuck did this come from.” The final scene between#Andrew & Neil in TRK being the fact that Neil specifically chose Andrew OVER the Exy season (in contrast to Kevin who was#obviously stressed over the Foxes being booted out of the season) is meant to make the readers wonder/go OH. Same with Neil choosing#to go to Evermore FOR Andrew. I've also seen some readers use the same argument that is being used by some here that it's not meant to#be an Andreil moment/Neil would have thought this way about anyone/any of the Foxes. Y'ALL. They aren't real people making real#choices they are fictional characters being written by the author to indicate SOMETHING to the reader. Neil choosing Andrew#SPECIFICALLY over Exy is meant to foreshadow Andreil. Neil choosing to go to Evermore SPECIFICALLY for Andrew is meant to foreshadow#Andreil. There is a reason these scenes were for Andrew/Neil and not Neil & the other Foxes. There is a reason when Neil is talking to#Andrew on the bus about the Zombie Apocalypse he specifically says he would want to go back for Andrew. Like yes Neil cares about#all the Foxes & found family is an important aspect of AFTG but Andrew/Neil are the main romantic couple. This is what I mean when#I say some readers engage with AFTG like the mlm romance is Fanon and “not everything is about your ship.” AFTG is a romance novel#Andrew/Neil are the main romantic pairing. Many of the scenes are written as they are to lead to/support Andrew/Neil getting together#and being together. Some of y'all are not using the critical thinking skills/literary analysis you seem to be thinking you are. You are#being deliberately obtuse and trying to diminish a canonical mlm romance for no real reason. This is when Wymack even ASKED#when did THIS happen. Ppl also mentioned Neil was obviously developing a romantic/physical attraction to Andrew PRIOR to Andrew's confessio#otherwise he would have been completely turned off by Andrew's confession. Neil is demisexual and the more he gets to know/understand#Andrew he more he fell for Andrew and there are MANY scenes that indicate that throughout TRK. Neil very much DOES care for Andrew#as a person throughout TRK that's how the romance was BUILT-UP like do some of y'all really read AFTG and think Neil has absolutely#no interest in Andrew until Andrew offers to blow him like... come on.#Also Nicky's speech gets way too much fucking hate b/c some of y'all give it such a bad-faith reading even though the messaging of#AFTG obviously agrees with Nicky about how Exy IS NOT enough#Neil was obsessed with Exy & while he loved playing Exy it did nothing to lessen his grief and his loneliness and his feeling of#being nothing. Some of y'all just read Nicky's speech as Nicky being an aphobic asshole who is saying “everyone needs romantic love”#which yes Nicky does value romantic love very highly & yes he IS wrong that everyone needs romantic love b/c that is not true#but he isn't wrong in the sense that everyone needs LOVE in the sense of family love platonic love friend love and for some romantic#love. Everyone needs COMMUNITY. Support systems. Belonging. #< -- prev tags
the intimacy in the line “thank you. you were amazing” is actually insane. neil is so genuinely appreciative of everything andrew gave him. he never even considers asking for more because what could possibly be better than the keys? or the trust? or the honesty? or the kisses? and andrew, who’s been told his entire life that he isn’t enough, that he’ll never be enough, is being earnestly told that he’s amazing. not satisfactory, not capable of great things but wasting his potential, but amazing just the way he is. amazing—strict boundaries, unconventional methods, rough edges, off-putting personality, and all. neil josten, you really are a pipe dream. i, too, would’ve attacked kevin day if my situationship said such a thing to me immediately before getting kidnapped
It is a little bit symbolic, that Nathaniel tears his name apart to throw away “Nathan” with its pain, lies and violence, and saves “Neil” with his real personality that hates all his horrific past.
And it’s moreover amazing that Andrew meets Neil, not Nathaniel or Stephen or Alex or Cris.
the thing about andreil is that they talk in riddles and convey meaning at frequencies only each other can understand. their conversations border on being literally incomprehensible to outsiders but they are always on the same page which is why they're perfect for each other.
you can't really take what they say to each other at face value a lot of the time, that's just not how they communicate. they operate by unique social rules that they established with each other, that's how they were able to trust each other so much and why their relationship is so noticeably special to everyone around them.
I've been thinking about how Neil expresses emotion and specifically the language around him smiling throughout the series. In TFC, the first time we see him smile is during his physical with Abby when they're discussing his scars--it isn't an expression born out of pleasant emotions:
Neil's only other smiles in TFC are two he gives truck drivers when hitchhiking back from Columbia (and I suppose we could also count the one he tells himself to make before the Kathy Ferdinand interview, when he instructs his reflection to "Smile and lie"):
In TRK, there are a few more: he almost smiles at Matt's excitement to jump into the game against the Ravens, and does smile back at his teammates when they're all tired after the game--the first genuine smile we get from him:
The next two are a false smile at Riko after he threatens Neil into visiting the Nest over break and a defiant one directed at Tetsuji when he's told to kneel--both smiles used as weapons, in a way:
But the final smile in TRK is once again sincere--in fact, it feels more like an involuntary response to Neil's relief at hearing Wymack's voice over the phone after the Nest than anything--it's a result of Neil feeling, for the first time in days, safe.
In TKM, none of Neil's smiles feel like posturing in the way that the smiles at the truckers or Riko did. At various points, Neil returns smiles from Nicky and Matt, and--on three separate occasions--smiles at something Andrew does, a significant increase in quantity of sincere smiles that seems connected to the increased sense of comfort he feels around the Foxes (and especially his happiness in his relationship with Andrew):
TKM also, however, has a few of the smiles that Neil describes as his father's--the cold one that's usually worn when he feels like Nathaniel, which I assume is the same one he gave when refusing to kneel to Tetsuji. They're equally sincere, but with none of the warmth Neil has developed through being around the Foxes. There are two specific instances of this, but I would imagine it's this smile that Neil is almost able to make when remembering his father's death & the one he wishes he could give to Riko after the Foxes win in finals:
Jean includes a few descriptions of this same smile in TSC (including a mention of Neil trying to rub it away), and Jeremy mentions it in TGR as well (additionally, Jean mentions a resurgence of Neil's insincere smile when he's speaking to the waitress, mentioning how wrong it looks):
With that in mind, the final two--which I've paired because they both come shortly after the end of the Foxes-Ravens finals and Riko's death--are from the very end of TKM and about a third of the way through in TSC:
These are interesting to me because even though they seem to fit into the category of Nathaniel smiles, I think these are also genuine smiles from Neil--they're smiles of relief at not having to worry about Riko anymore, smiles that are looking toward the future. As dark as the reason behind them may be, they're smiles that are stemming from the knowledge of what the Foxes have achieved & the warmth of the promise of a future with them.
And that's it: that's all of the smiles we get from Neil Josten across the whole series. There are only a few of them, even fewer that are sincere, and only a handful that are warm or traditionally happy. But they are there, and they matter: they're another sign of Neil feeling at home. It's huge that he flashes smiles back at Nicky and Matt, that he feels safe with Wymack and simply happy around Andrew. It's a sign of Neil learning what it means to have security and a home and a support system. Equally important is the fact that the other kinds of smiles--the insincere one that's his version of Kevin's and Jeremy's media smiles and the cold one that's associated with Nathaniel--are still around. Neil settling into that sense of security isn't him totally lowering his guard or moving into unburdened contentment and peace. That's never going to be him or his life. He's always going to have his sharp edges and he's always going to be antagonistic and he's probably never going to offer the soft, happy smiles to anyone other than the people he's closest to. That's not who he is.
Anyway, I just thought it was interesting & will probably continue to have thoughts on Neil & internal vs. external expression of emotions as I reread
”This was everything he wanted, everything he needed, and Neil was never letting go…”.
Work’s finally chilled out a bit!

happy birthday to neil josten my beloved !!! favourite character in all the world i love him so so incredibly much and i hope he has an amazing day with his cats and the love of his life <333
now here's some of my favourite neil quotes to celebrate the occasion:
"it's not the world that's cruel. it's the people in it."
"will you tell coach on us?" andrew asked. "no," neil said. "but i would ask him why you're not medicated."
he tapped two fingers to his temple, copying andrew's mocking salute from their first meeting. "better luck next time."
"are you stupid?" seth asked. "yeah," neil said.
"i have a bit of an attitude problem."
"here's some honesty. i don't like you, and i don't trust you."
THE RIKO ROAST™
"my first memories are of people dying. i'm not afraid of you."
"you will kneel," tetsuji said. neil had a feeling he was going to regret this for the rest of his very short life, but he smiled and said, "make me."
"was that really so difficult to say the first time around?" dan asked wryly. "i did say it the first time around," neil said. "i'm fine."
"i want to see you lose control."
"no problem," matt said. "need anything else?" "a clear shot at riko and no witnesses."
