i don't think i'm the hero type.

Droplets  of  water  refracted  the  bright  sunlight  everywhere,  rising  in  trembling  arches  within a grand fountain before  collapsing  back  into  itself,  over  and  over.  Around  it,  the  plaza  was  alive  with  the  cacophonous  sound  of  people  escaping  the  weight  of  their  apartments  and  offices  now  that  the  afternoon  had  softened  into  gold.  Children  leaned  over  the  edge  of  the  water  while  exhausted  parents  called  after  them.  Women  crossed  the  square  in  their  thin,  summer  dresses  carrying  iced  coffees.  Elsewhere,  tourists  stopped  every  few  feet  to  photograph  buildings  or  the  “odd”  detail  they  might  share  with  friends  and  family  once  they  returned  home. 

A  paper  cup  of  hazelnut  gelato  rested  against  her  knee,  dark  eyes  watching  the  crowd  move  around  them  in  shifting  currents.  Usually,  so  many  people  made  her  restless.   She  loved  to  slip  in  between  crowds  of  people…being  still  was  something  else...  Still,  the  noise  settled  differently  against  her  skin  today.  Not  entirely  pleasant…but at the very least, very  much  alive. 

Carmen  let  her  small,  plastic  spoon  rest  against  the  edge  of  the  cup  before  answering.  “No,”  she  said  softly.  “Honestly,  I  don’t  think  either  of  us  fits  that  caliber...”

The  heat  had  loosened  a  strand  of  dark  hair  against  her  throat.  She  tucked  it  back  absently  before  continuing.  “Maybe  to  a  few  people  we  might  be…  The  rare  ones  who  can  see  beyond  what  we’ve  taught  the  world  to  expect  from  us.  But  people  like  that  are  scarce.”  Her  gaze  lingered  on  the  water,  the  breeze  picking  up  so  that  the  fountain  sprayed  cool  mist  across  her  bare  arm.  And  again,  she  calmly  scooped  another  spoonful  of  gelato,  though  it  had  begun  melting  much  faster  than  she  could  eat  it.

Thanks to you, I locked the beasts away.

Carmen  had  sat  at  the  café  for  half  an  hour,  already  on  her  third  espresso…still  warm…very  much  necessary.   “I’m  always  happy  to  help.”  A  faint  lift  of  her  brows,  as  if  this  were  obvious  enough  not  to  require  further  elaboration.  She  picked  up  her  espresso,  taking  a  slow  sip;  every  drop  was  necessary  to  replenish  all  the  lost  hours  of  sleep  these  last  couple  of  days. 

“Despite  what  the  media  says,”  she  added,  tone  casually  conversational,  “I  don’t  actually  wake  up  every  morning  plotting  some  form  of  global  chaos.”  A  pause,  “Mostly  because  I  am  not a  morning  person.”  Followed  by  a  small,  private  smile.  She  would  much  rather  prefer  the  quiet  solitude  of  long  nights,  the  world  asleep,  mind  racing  towards  a  multiplicity  of  ideas.

“My  good  deeds  are  often  less  reported  than  the  little bit  of  mischief  I  am  involved  with.  Life  would  be  terribly  dull  if  governments  approved  of  everything  I  did.”  Her  gaze  flicked  briefly  toward  the  fogged  glass,  where  the  harbor  blurred  into  plumes  of  gray  uncertainty.  “And  for  the  record,”  Carmen  said,  a  touch  more  lightly  now,  “I  do  help!  Quite  a  lot,  actually!  It  just…  doesn’t  always  arrive  in  the  form  people  expect.”

There was no way that Carmen could miss the faint shadows forming beneath Ben’s eyes. Work, as always, had kept him all day, and after that had been taken care of, he had carried Jo against his chest through those enormous rooms while murmuring stories half from memory and half invented from exhaustion. Earlier, she had watched from the doorway while Jo slept against him, a damp, little hand tangled in Ben’s collar. Outside, the rain had quickly begun to fall over the city. It slid down the tall windows overlooking the garden. A change in season that had wrought this forth.

Carmen did not move instantly at his suggestion. She knew that this would be the way things were even before Jo was in the picture. But it all seemed so unexpected? She had received a call earlier that somewhere across the Atlantic, a shipment had gone missing. Now, Interpol wanted answers, and people (as always) were already waiting for her. She wanted to tell them all no, even Ben at the moment. It wasn’t that she doubted him; she knew what Ben was capable of.

Still, Carmen remained there, gloves in hand. It was hard not to imagine Jo waking before dawn, asking for her with that fever-thick voice children have when they’re halfway between dreams and illness. Mama. The word always struck somewhere beneath her ribs.

“If I stay any longer, I’ll miss the flight,” she murmured, though she made no real effort to move. “And if I go, I already know exactly what will happen.” Her eyes lowered briefly. “I’ll spend the entire flight imagining him waking up and asking where I am.” The rain pressed softly against the windows. Life knocking again to remind her how ruthless it could be in its timing.

Carmen lowered her gaze further, the diamonds at her wrist catching the warm light from the sconces. Ridiculous, suddenly unbearable. All that brilliance while upstairs her little boy slept,  flushed with fever beneath his blankets. For one brief moment, she hated every beautiful object in the house—until the slight warmth of Ben’s hand at her elbow tethered her gently back to reality.

“You’re tired too,” she said softly. “You think I don’t notice it, but I do.” Then quieter still, the words escaping before she could stop them: “You carry everyone so carefully, Ben.” She leaned in to embrace him softly, “I’ll be back soon,” she promised, maybe the only thing she could do. “And I’ll call whenever I can… tell him I didn’t leave without kissing him goodbye.” Even if he doesn’t remember it in the morning…

he absolutely needs to get away from all of these people. they don't get it, don't get him. too much noise has him losing his train of thought, whatever breakthrough he may be leading to. but with the right amount of silence (or substance to aide in the induced focus session), it's easy to tune everything out and follow the whimsical illusion he believes is him through these woods in search of … whatever he is leading himself to. deeper and deeper, he trips on a risen tree stump (even apologizes to it and for a brief moment thinks it even responds during his haze) – he hadn't expected to bump into a family and most welcome face. under other circumstances, that is. ❝ what is this place trying to tell me? are you the clue? ❞ his hand waves before her face – he doesn't believe her to be real. just another figment of his imagination.

Carmen  watched  him  carefully.  It  wasn’t  hard  to  see  that  his  pupils  were  too  wide…then  again,  he  had  always  seemed  to  possess  that  sort of sleepless  look  about  him.  Dirt  seemed  to  cling  to  the  cuff  of  his  coat.  Strange  what  this  town  stripped  from  people  first,  perhaps  vanity  being  the  first  to  go.  Routines  lost  to  a  time  that  was  once  arranged  neatly  in  a  planner.  Now,  one  had  to  make  do  with  what  was  around  them…

And  yet...  he  still  carried  himself  like  a  man  accustomed  to  beautiful  things.  Like  someone  unwilling  to  let  the  world  reduce  him  entirely  despite  the  forced  confinement.  It  reminded  her,  oddly  enough,  of  a  painting  she  had  seen  by  Baltasar  de  Echave  Ibía  of  the  Hermits,  Saint  Paul  and  Saint  Anthony.  Those  gaunt  holy  men  withdrawn  into  the  wilderness,  surrounded  not  by  splendor  but  by  privation,  and  still  rendered  with  a  strange  dignity.  Saints  in  isolation,  clinging  to  devotion  while  the  world  fell  away  around  them. 

“You  know,  the  saints  went  into  deserts  to  find  God,”  she  replied,  her  voice  nearly  swallowed  by  the  wind  moving  through  the  branches  overhead.  Somewhere  deeper  in  the  woods  came  the  crack  of  something  moving.  “You  looking  for  him  out  here?”  Her  mouth  curved  faintly,  though  her  eyes  did  not.  “I  suppose  everybody  invents  their  own  pilgrimage  to  go  on.”

Happy Valentine's Day from Karen 💝

"You and me, Carm. Mini golf. I even dressed for the occasion." She does a little pose to show off the pink peacoat she's wearing. "Red is my favorite color, but I didn't want to step on your toes… and matching seemed like a little much. So seasonal coordination it is."

From her pocket, Karen produces two tickets, fanned out for Carmen to read. "It's not just any mini golf, either. This place is fancy, and I think it'll be suitable to your tastes. I was looking at the pictures online and it's like this… I don't know, moody fairy garden resort. It's so pretty. And the caddies are also cocktail waiters." Finally she flashes a hopeful smile. "You game?"

“Mini  golf?”  she  repeated,  a  little  bit  of  uncertainty  (and  perhaps  trepidation)  behind  it.  “I  can’t  even  remember  the  last  time  I  played…except  for  the  fact  that  I  was  a  child.”  Perhaps  her  words  sounded  a  bit  blunt?  But  they  were  meant  to  be  more  introspective  than  anything  else.  Suhara  had  taken  her before,  something  about  hand-eye  coordination  and  whatnot.  Everything  was  a  lesson  with  him.  Fun  only  as  long  as  it  served  a  purpose.  “Truthfully,  I  was  terrible  at  it,”  she  added,  almost  as  a quick  aside.  “I  remember  the  little  ball  being  fiddly,  and  I  was  too  spirited  in  my  swings.”

Her  eyes  lifted  then,  finding  Karen,  tracing  the  pink  of  her  coat  and  the  deliberate  choice  not  to  match.  Nobody  but  her  would  know  the  effort  hidden  inside  something  that  pretended  to  be  effortless.  It  was…sweet.

“A  moody  fairy  garden,”  she  murmured,  a  hint  of  amusement  threading  through  her  voice  now.  “I  suppose  it  would  be  a  shame  to  let  you  face  such  a  place  alone.”  Carmen  tilted  her  head,  just  slightly.  “But  I  should  warn  you…If  I  lose,  I  won’t  take  it  gracefully.  And  if  I  win…”  A  small  smile  returned,  sharper  this  time.  “I  won’t  let  you  forget  it.”

She  couldn’t  help  but  give  him  back  a  glance,  brow  lifting,  a  sort  of  indulgence  in  the  offer  rather  than  annoyance.  His  words  had  caught  her  before  she  had  fully  stepped  out,  the  thinning  rays  of  light  just  barely  hitting  her  face.  A  couple  of  minutes  wouldn’t  hurt…  So  she  stepped  back  inside  a  few  paces,  closing  the  door,  taking  the  bottle  from  his  hand,  and  turning  it  idly  between  her  fingers.  This  was  markedly  worse than  beer,  but  the  only  substitution  that  could  be  made  in  this  place.  Maybe  better  than  nothing?  Maybe…

“In  another  life,  that  line  might’ve  worked,”  she  let  out  a  measured  laugh,  clearly  amused.  “But  here?”  She  gestured  vaguely  toward  the  door,  or  rather,  what  lay  outside  of  it  in  the  coming  darkness.  “Aquí  no  hay  un  buen  camino,  Jade.  Just  an  endless  loop  where  the  road  brings  you  back  to  where  you  started.”  She  took  another  quick  sip,  performative  more  than  an  attempt  to  quench  her  nonexistent  thirst,  then  handed  it  back.

“You  know,  I  was  supposed  to  be  going  to  colony  house  tonight,”  she  added,  glancing  toward  the  door.  Already,  she  could  imagine  the  noise  of  it  all,  the  closeness  of  sharing  the  same,  crammed  living  space.  It  was  nice  for  some,  a  good  way  to  build  community…  She’d  been  drifting  from  place  to  place,  exacerbating  the  idea  that  even  the  town  didn’t  want  anything  to  do  with  her.  “Donna  thinks  I  can  help,  or  at  the  very  least  keep  my  hands  busy  enough  to  not  begin  spiraling.”  Carmen  leaned  her  shoulder  lightly  against  the  wall  instead  of  moving  back  toward  the  door.  “But  there’s  too  many  people  there…too  much  noise.  Everyone  telling  the  same  stories  as  if  they  repeat  them  enough,  their  memory  can  be  written  into  whatever  ‘history’  exists  in  this  place.”  A  pause,  her  gaze  drifting  back  to  him.  “To  be  frank,  I’ve  never  had  the  patience  for  that  kind  of  living.”  She  sighed,  this  was  a  good  place  as  any.  Colony  house  and  Donna  could  wait  until  tomorrow.
