It's frustrating how frequently women are poorly written characters in stories. Creators often make them one-dimensional: love interests, support figures, antagonists, or flat-out fanservice, or they use them as a tool in another character's “tragic” backstory by making them a dead loved one or someone that character must save/care for. Some creators treat women as mere keychains for other characters, preventing them from existing on their own.

Creators sometimes prohibit women from being as or more powerful than men, giving them weaker abilities, and allowing men to easily defeat them. They treat them as nothing more than fodder to make the men look stronger and sometimes portray them as damsels in distress who need to be saved. In some stories, creators reduce powerful women to housewives or disable or kill them so they can no longer fight and stay out of the way of the men.

Based on how people treat writing women, you would think it was as complicated as quantum physics. All you have to do is write women like people — yet some creators either refuse to learn how or don't care to.
