mourning my emotional support tree
maiden in need of rescue!!! what a horrible terrifying dragon!!!!
my family used to have this sort of abstract watercolour painting up in our dining room, it was there as early as i can remember, and i always hated it. one day when i was like ten my mom came up to me, and i guess handed me something but i dont remember what, and she was like “can you put this on the shelf, by the bird painting?”
and i was like “..the what?”
and she was like “the painting of the bird on the branch. can you put it there” and she pointed to the abstract painting
and i was like “how is that a bird”
and she said “well what do you think it is?”
and was like “it’s a beached whale with a giant eye, blowing blood out of its blow hole onto the legs of a guy who’s running away”
..and i guess my mom thought that was like funny or weird or something so she told my dad about it, and he immediately said “oh, you mean the reindeer painting?”
Your parents are wrong that’s a whale
okay so this painting is “Reindeer Nights” by Peter Kitchell and it’s one of a set of four paintings that go together so I thought maybe seeing the whole thing would help but
it doesn’t
i love this guy
The first time I watched Knives Out, I was in nursing school & wondered what I’d think about it when I was a nurse. Now I’m five years into my nursing career, plus with plenty of time in the home health speciality like Marta, and watched the movie again a few nights ago. My overall feelings about the nursing are actually about the same: I could quibble about details but overall the vibe feels right. She feels emotionally authentic. She feels like a nurse. She should have maybe done a respiratory assessment. But also that old man was absolutely so hyped to concoct a mystery. Absolutely jazzed to slit his own throat. Not a good partner in his own care. Patient who definitely wouldn’t use the call light appropriately.
And god can you imagine dealing with his family
You know that hospitalist note starts with something painfully diplomatic that just screams you will be walking into a war zone. “Harlan is an energetic and pleasant 85 year old gentleman with very engaged family support network actively involved in care”
does anyone have the “my wife is home” r/ambien post
can i be real with you i'm gonna start biting people

im sorry these are the funniest tags ive ever seen
A three-circle venn-diagram where the circles are "sex workers", "the furry community", and "people working in morgues". I don't know what the overlap parts are.
Fourth circle needed: IT workers
You say that with such confidence that I am compelled to trust your vision. Personally I have no idea where this is going.
i'd say the overlap between "sex workers" and "people who work in morgues" is probably "seeing naked strangers a lot"
"professional handling of bodies of strangers"?
Putting my neck out for you folks here
Okay I’ve gone through many of the reblogs and “prefer when clients don’t talk to them” is peak
what's the spider book 👀
I’m very happy you asked!
so we begin: an evil alien brain slug is infiltrating the Canadian parliament. his troop-leader has already secured the body of Canada’s future prime minister. he’s in the body of the prime minister’s son, and is pretending to be him (going to classes, following his routine, etc) UNTIL!!!! HE GETS HIT BT A TRUCK!!
the slug wakes up in a mausoleum. a glowing golden goddess tasks him with killing the demon king. he says “what?” but unfortunately the processes are already processing. he wakes up again: he’s in the body of a (formerly) dead prince, in medieval fantasy Britain.
seems pretty straight forward, right? well here’s the twist. in the depths of a castle, he finds a grey-skinned human/spider hybrid being held captive. this “spider man” has an eight pack. the slug is affected by the eight pack.
and now the spider is coming along on their crusade to kill the demon king. but wait! freeing him from imprisonment might have had consequences. the consequences being, the slug is now bondaged to the gills and being dragged underground, where the spider’s gigantic cannibalistic mother awaits.
and what happens next?? will the slug find a way to contact his troops, and resume their alien invasion in this new fantastical world? how will they fight the demon king? will the slug have anal sex with the spider? you’ll have to read to find out!
it’s called The Ignoble Invasion of Prince Proculo, and currently it’s in pre-order
AND it’s currently 20% off on bookshop.org! which is a great alternative to amazon, by the way, as every order supports local bookstores
I am fucking dying
UNMUTE IT P L E A S E
Genuinely one of the best impressions I’ve ever heard, lmao. Fucking class.
for those keeping score at home, the appropriate phrases for these phenomena on the left are:
shared trauma
manipulation
bothering
impulsivity
the reason they're misused is that people don't feel like the weight of the accurate words captures their impact, and the misused phrases have a stronger vibe, even if they are categorically wrong for the context.
using a phrase that is wrong to add emphasis is a weird phenomenon that confuses the hell out of people who know the actual meaning of the phrases, and misleads the people who do not. it also annoys the shit out of people who have to reprocess what you've just said, and it makes you a less credible source of information.
sometimes, subtlety and accuracy are more valuable than emphasis. especially with the word "bother".... people rarely say that a situation left them "bothered" these days, so you can use it to imply as much or as little impact as you like. you can also modify it, like this left me profoundly bothered, or you can use completely different, more descriptive phrases, like "this left me with a sense of discomfort/unease/unbridled rage", or even "after the event, my thoughts were consumed by similar previous experiences" which actually creates a middle ground meaning between the correct usage of the phrase and misusing it.
you can get creative; your laziness dilutes the perceived impact of the situations these phrases were actually coined for.
Yeah, personally I'd go with "disturbing" to describe the more common phenomenon of uncomfortable concepts or topics. I find a lot of things disturbing! They unsettle me and/or creep me out! But they're not triggering me.
Triggering is, like, when I had a sobbing panic attack during a grad school exam because my e-dictionary ran out of batteries(!?), which makes no sense without the context of the classroom emotional abuse that I experienced as a preteen. : /
I feel so insane about ai. I've had face-to-face conversations with people who use it for therapy, who use it to calculate the safety of pill interactions, who use it for all their emails and grant applications and legal documents and academic papers and finance sheets and for every single question they have about the world, and if you tell them about the ecological costs they just laugh and say "I guess I've used a lot of water." and I've been in multiple gatherings of 10+ people where I'm THE ONLY PERSON who doesn't use chatgpt. it's turning me into a ranting raving pariah, because how don't you people see??? why don't you understand??????? this bullshit didn't exist five years ago, you absolutely do not need it, and it is destroying everything
my friend just had an art show and they were communicating with the gallerist over email. They could clearly tell that the gallerist was using AI to respond to their emails, but just rolled their eyes and moved on.
and then on the day of the show, my friend asks, "where is the camera I requested?"
gallerist: "you didn't request a camera"
my friend: "I did, and you confirmed that you would have one here."
gallerist: "that isn't true."
and then she proceeded to pull up the email thread, and my friend could see that every single email they had sent had been summarized by AI, and that the gallerist had then had AI write a response to them based on the AI summary, and that the AI had detected that they needed a camera, and confirmed on behalf of the gallerist that they would bring a camera, but because the gallerist had offloaded the work of actually reading and responding, she simply hadn't actually made any note of it herself, therefore didn't bring it, nor did she even know one was needed.
so my friend had done all of this communication about their needs and expectations to be able to make the show possible, and the person whose job it was to read that information and get it done had simply.... not read the information and not done it. because AI.
Silly inquiries only? Okay. Please indulge this silly question. How do each of the Blackwood-Sims eat their animal crackers?
aw dam n i really made my bed with this one uhhh have this
Alright. Okay, Everybody listen up. We have good news and bad news. The bad news, the bad news is that as you've likely already noticed, The Beast without Measure or Mercy or Knowable Form has once again begun descending nightly from its highland lair to ravage our humble farming village, we are, once again, being ravaged. You've likely already noticed. That's the bad news. That's bad. The good news is, uh, the good news is that right now it appears to be exclusively attacking and devouring all of the, uh, all of the very small children. Specifically the babies. No, hang on, shut up, shut up, all of you shut- No, I don't want it eating the babies, Jesus, lady, let go of me- I'm just saying that it's not really negatively affecting our ability to respond strategically by doing so. Because besides a few bouts of grief-induced catatonia we're still at like 99% operational capacity here, right? The babies were all very cute but they were not gonna be the ones packing into this hovel to come up with a game plan. Babies weren't the ones with institutional knowledge of how this thing was banished last time, babies aren't the ones who know how to forge pitchforks and light torches. In fact, babies didn't do shit around here! Easily our weakest link. If it was starting with the twenty somethings we'd really be fucked. I mean forget about the athletics involved of the monster hunting, we would not be getting the harvest in before first frost
Look, everyone, just- okay, I get it, many of you liked your babies, a couple of you still do, I get it, I get it, I get it, but put me down and think big picture here! We are a humble farming village. We were always gonna lose a bunch of 'em to mountain scurvy and mumps and all that humble farming village shit. It's just that this time it's a Beast of Form Unknowable that bursts through your wall at night and eats your kid right out of your arms, so you're experiencing the loss as a sudden sharp shock instead of as a long winding despair where you're watching it happen while knowing you can't do dick about it because the marauders marauded off with all our seed corn. For example. It's not part of the, the background radiation of your life yet, that aching, ambient sense of failure, yours or the worlds, you aren't quite sure. You'll never be sure. But once you've gotten used to never being sure? Well, compared to someone of fighting age, the turnaround time on a new baby is actually pretty- guys. Guys. Please put me down
My mom has told me about this video multiple times. It seems to define parenting for her. I get it now.
