I loved the series once again!

Unlike season 1, I really took my time watching this one and enjoying it, and it was great !

For this review, I want to clarify a few things:

✧ I only watched the first trailer and the season ✧ I didn’t watch any other content about the live action (interviews, other reviews, etc.), except for one that I’ll mention later ✧ I didn’t rewatch the anime or check the wiki to refresh my memory

These are just my notes from my first viewing!

I’ll talk about the positive points, the negative points, and also the issues related to the adaptation itself.

The critiques and comments I make are purely personal and are only meant as nuances added to a work I genuinely appreciate. I was really excited for season 2 and I was definitely not disappointed!

Episode 5 is definitely my favorite because of:

✧ Usopp’s character development ✧ Sanji getting beaten up off-screen by a pajama-wearing otter while the Den den Mushi in the foreground is singing and dancing ✧ Usopp running around the statues of his dying friends with a killer chasing him, like I used to run around the table with my older sister when I was eight ✧ Usopp’s “You missed.”

I LOVE IT!

𝐏𝐎𝐒𝐈𝐓𝐈𝐕𝐄𝐒 𝐏𝐎𝐈𝐍𝐓𝐒

𝐃𝐈𝐑𝐄𝐂𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍

🎥 The direction is still fairly simple but effective, and I finally got used to the very close shots on the actors’ faces with the blurred backgrounds. ⚓ I also liked how the camera slightly sways whenever we’re on a ship, or sometimes isn’t perfectly aligned in certain shots. It really reinforces the feeling of being at sea. 🍍 Once again, I think the Devil Fruit effects were really well done! Smoker, Robin, Mr.3, Wapol, and Dalton all looked great and never took me out of the story. I’m not really counting Mr.5 and Miss Valentine since their abilities don’t require as many effects. 🪦 Special mention for the shots of the graves of the pirates in Whiskey Peak. I don’t remember if it was like that in the manga, but I loved the sequence of shots getting closer and closer while the bell rings.

𝐖𝐑𝐈𝐓𝐈𝐍𝐆

🤎 One of the best ideas in my opinion was mixing the different arcs together. It makes the story flow so much better. We also get some foreshadowing for manga/anime readers, like Bartolomeo appearing briefly, Sabo being mentioned in Loguetown, or Sanji talking about his mother. ❄️ They also handled the Drum arc really well. Even though we didn’t get the climb up the mountain with the rabbits, there’s still a small reference with the stuffed rabbit head in the inn (oops). 🎵 When Hiriluk whistles the melody of the Tony Tony Chopper song after treating him… AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!

𝐅𝐈𝐆𝐇𝐓𝐒

⚔️ Most of the fights are really impressive. Sanji, Nami, and especially Zoro had some great action scenes. The choreography was fun and the exaggerated moments (being thrown ten meters away by a hit, attacking with acrobatics, or getting knocked out by falling off a table) added a goofy touch that balanced everything nicely. 🛑 That said, some fights (including one major one) were a big NO for me. I’ll talk about that later.

𝐂𝐇𝐀𝐑𝐀𝐂𝐓𝐄𝐑𝐒

Sanji didn’t get a huge amount of development, but he has some really sweet moments. For example when he talks about his mother, or when he learns in Loguetown that Zeff liked his sautéed tuna and added it to the Baratie menu. That little smile! Also, since he’s less of a “slave for women” here, I think his relationship with Nami feels much more sincere. Especially when she gets sick and he’s genuinely worried about her and wants to cook for her, like he used to do with his mother.

Nami is also much more enjoyable. We see her role as the crew’s chief accountant when she lends money to Zoro with ridiculous interest rates, or the look on her face when Kureha tells her all her medical expenses are covered. She also has several moments showing how much she trusts the crew. For example when she reassures Usopp in Little Garden, or when she repeatedly shows complete trust in Luffy’s decisions. So cute!

Usopp was absolutely my favorite character this season. I’ve said this before, but I really don’t like him in the manga because of his constant lying. However, here his journey toward becoming braver is one of the best character arcs of the season. Honestly, he’s the only Straw Hat who really evolves in this season. He’s also one of the main reasons why Episode 5 is my favorite.

I have to admit I felt a bit indifferent about Zoro. Not good, not bad. Just average. He’s usually a character I really like, but here he barely evolves and doesn’t really have any scenes that aren’t either advancing the plot or building his “aura”. Except the moment in Drum when he’s on watch and Usopp brings him a beer to apologize. I love how Zoro is clearly sulking and barely glances at him but the moment he sees the beer, he quickly double-checks with a “we’re cool” just to keep his pride intact. That said, I think Zoro is the character that suffers the most from the transition from drawing to live action. His “cool aura moments” look amazing in manga panels, but in live action they can sometimes feel a bit awkward.

I really like Robin. We still don’t know much about her yet, but the actress captures that ambiguous and dangerous vibe perfectly. You never quite know whose side she’s on or what she’s really thinking. Also, her outfits are great! Except for the black vinyl dress that looks a bit BDSM-ish, I think her costumes are the most successful and realistic in the whole series.

Vivi is sweet and I like her character. I’m curious to see how things will develop next season. Her story and her desire to do the right thing are very touching.

I had completely forgotten Chopper’s backstory. While taking notes during the episode about his past, this is literally what I wrote: “J'ai chialé comme une merde” That’s all that needs to be said. He’s also incredibly cute!!! But his voice is weird, like the voice actor is pinching their nose while speaking. It sounds really off. And his humanoid form… HORRIBLE. The actor wearing that awful stuffed suit looks ridiculous. You can even see the ends of his fingers inside the mittens when he opens his hands.

Kureha looks EXACTLY how I imagined her! I was afraid they would cast a woman in her forties or fifties and just give her a gray wig to age her up while still keeping a “young attractive woman” on screen. But no, we got a queen who absolutely owns the role. PS: I only noticed after the Chopper flashback episode that she was wearing a cherry blossom shirt in honor of Hiriluk. I almost cried again but let's not talk about it!

I really like the character designs of the higher Baroque Works agents, especially Miss Valentine. Her style is very colorful and playful, and her Twiggy-inspired makeup is a great touch. I don’t remember her having that in the manga, but it fits her aesthetic perfectly. It changes from classic beauty make-up on TV. Other than Miss Goldenweek (which I’ll talk about later), I actually like the style of all the agents. They look very faithful to their original designs!

𝐍𝐄𝐆𝐀𝐓𝐈𝐕𝐄𝐒 𝐏𝐎𝐈𝐍𝐓𝐒

Mr.9’s costume in general looks like a $5 Halloween costume where you glued random pieces of blue foam you had at home and just tore them by hand because you couldn’t be bothered to grab scissors and cut them properly. The only thing I liked was his hair/wig in the introduction scene. Everything around him looks dirty, half-rotten, slimy, and dark but, right in the middle of all that, there’s this perfectly brushed, shiny red hair sticking out. That part was actually funny.

I really cannot stand Sanji’s hair strand anymore. It was already starting to annoy me in my first season, but constantly seeing him push his hair back behind his ear is getting really distracting.

This might sound a bit strange, but Zoro’s clothes are: 1. very numerous and varied 2. always perfectly clean and ironed I understand the first point because the only information I had about season 2 beforehand was that the showrunners took inspiration from the colored chapter covers to dress the characters. So I expected different outfits. But Zoro always having clean, perfectly pressed clothes feels really strange considering his character.

𝐂𝐇𝐀𝐑𝐀𝐂𝐓𝐄𝐑𝐒

I might make some enemies with this take, but I really didn’t like Luffy this season. Where the other actors managed to humanize their characters through small facial expressions, little speech habits, or by toning down the exaggeration, Luffy stayed exactly the same. He’s constantly shouting (except when he suddenly has to deliver a speech or a dramatic line, and out of nowhere he becomes 100% serious for about 30 seconds). His facial expressions and gestures are just way too exaggerated. Like in the bakery at Whiskey Peak where he makes overly theatrical gestures. Or when he meets Chopper and opens his mouth really wide with both hands stretched out in front of him. I just can’t.

My second issue is more of a casting problem with Miss Goldenweek. The actress seems too old to convincingly play a child. Because of that, it creates a really uncomfortable feeling for me when I see a woman who looks around 25–30 trying to emphasize a child. How “small” she is, wearing a childlike outfit, wearing more blush than I did in 2016, and humming what sounds like a children’s rhyme when she goes to meet Luffy on the beach.

𝐖𝐑𝐈𝐓𝐈𝐍𝐆 / 𝐒𝐓𝐀𝐆𝐈𝐍𝐆

I think the hand-to-hand fights are often poorly choreographed, especially the one between Zoro and Miss Monday in Whiskey Peak. You can clearly see they’re too far away from each other when they exchange blows. Miss Monday’s stance looks strange and her hits feel very soft.

But the final fight between Sanji and Chopper against Wapol’s henchmen isn’t much better. It has the same choreography issues and ends up looking ridiculous. Sanji staying on the ground for three full minutes until Chopper miraculously helps him by removing his perfectly ok foot from his shoe? And Sanji’s final attack… what even was that weird spinning top effect? I was honestly very disappointed by that fight.

Another topic: I find Vivi’s stance very hypocritical in the final episodes. The end of the season revolves a lot around the question: what makes a good king? We see this in the ideological confrontations between Cobra, Vivi, Wapol, and Dalton. Everyone has their own vision of leadership. But in the final scene, Vivi delivers a speech about how a good ruler cares about their people and their suffering. Except her own people have been suffering for years and are on the verge of civil war to overthrow her father. Personally, I don’t think she’s really in a position to oppose Wapol while presenting herself as a symbol of “royalty devoted to the people,” when her own people actually hate her at that moment.

𝐀𝐃𝐀𝐏𝐓𝐀𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍 𝐈𝐒𝐒𝐔𝐄𝐒

𝐀𝐃𝐕𝐀𝐍𝐓𝐀𝐆𝐄𝐒 𝐎𝐅 𝐋𝐈𝐕𝐄 𝐀𝐂𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍 𝐎𝐕𝐄𝐑 𝐀𝐍𝐈𝐌𝐄 / 𝐌𝐀𝐍𝐆𝐀

The characters feel so much more human. I had never really pictured the Straw Hats as a group of young people in their early twenties going on an adventure. But seeing them walking down the mountain leading to the Grand Line, with Zoro, Sanji, and Usopp holding onto each other while laughing and stumbling… It suddenly reminds you that they’re just people. And I love that. Their little expressions and gestures make a huge difference: ✧ Zoro’s face when Nami tells him about the 300% interest rate ✧ Sanji’s small smile when he learns Zeff liked his dish ✧ Usopp flipping off Mr.5 ✧ Nami unimpressed when she realizes Usopp went back to the ship in Little Garden ✧ Zoro double-checking the beer Usopp brought him in Drum There are so many little moments like that and they’re great. Even the verbal fights between Sanji and Zoro after killing the T-Rex, when they suddenly start speaking faster and throwing insults at each other. That’s something you don’t really perceive the same way in a manga speech bubble because, for me (from the manga) they only screamed at each other.

𝐃𝐈𝐒𝐀𝐃𝐕𝐀𝐍𝐓𝐀𝐆𝐄𝐒 𝐎𝐅 𝐋𝐈𝐕𝐄 𝐀𝐂𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍

The sets are a huge weakness. And I understand why: adapting a pirate story where, in a single season, the characters travel through six completely different locations with complex environments to build (the Merry, Loguetown, Reverse Mountain, Whiskey Peak, Little Garden, and Drum) is extremely difficult. But the result is that the sets often look good in their overall structure but very weak in the details. The perfect example is the glass display behind Mr.8 in the bakery in Whiskey Peak. The shop is there. The display case is there. But the cakes behind him look awful : crooked, messy, and obviously made of plastic glued together. Some manga gags also don’t translate well visually. For example seeing Mr.5 pick his nose for his Boom-Boom fruit power. In animation it’s silly. In live action close-up it’s just… gross. And the fur balls on the back of the henchman’s hands during the final fight with Wapol, they look terrible. They move around during the fight and you can literally see the black strings holding them in place in the actor’s palms. It just doesn’t have the same charm.
