First things first, Happy New Year to all my patient followers!

I’m so sorry that I haven’t been doing as much drawing lately, this year has been a bit shite and I haven’t been in the drawing mood.

But then, I saw something on Facebook that stirred me into action!

I saw a fairly well-known artist post WIPs of the Gems in Sailor fuku, but their version of Amethyst was skinny and had none of her attitude in the pose. At first I was furious - I can’t tell you how ANGRY it makes me when people draw Amethyst or Rose (or even Jasper) as stick thin - or at best thin but with only some slight roundness.

No matter how much weight I lose (91lb so far) I will always associate myself with larger characters, and to see those positive role model characters being made skinny when there are LITERALLY THOUSANDS of thin characters for fans to appreciate, makes me so angry that normally nothing good ever comes from it.

But not this time, no, this time I took that energy and spent it constructively. So here, enjoy Sailor Amethyst and Tuxedo Peridot!

I was looking at this again and thinking about how much I love that while each of these images evokes royalty, each is a very different type. The each give me a different impression:

Beyoncé - The Empress - At the height of her power, her throne is unassailable, though many try. Strength in every step, her court always in attendance. You will never see the strike coming. 

Rihanna - The Child Queen - She crowns herself, trembling but determined, still mourning the things she has lost but refusing to be cowed. No one will claim her suffering but herself.

Nicki - The Anointed Queen - She rules by divine right, lit with a power that is as much spiritual as earthly. Her subjects are her children and she will raise them up, inspiring them with their own worth.

Janelle - The Warrior Queen - She leads a band of poet-warriors, a queendom both young and aggressive, but full of hope for a future that she will fight for, unafraid.

Let’s talk about Donatello fricking Hamato for a second.

I can’t imagine how much flipping stress he’s gotta be under.

To his family, he’s their engineer, their plumber, their mathematician, their electrician, their inventor, their all-around-repairman, their fucking DOCTOR-

When does he sleep?!? I mean, we all joke and write about him not sleeping; but seriously, he’s not even eighteen yet, and he probably gets that many hours of sleep per week trying to deal with everything he has to. Let the guy rest! for! once!

If Donnie doesn’t have high-key anxiety, trying to fix or head off all these potentially deadly problems before they hurt his family, I will literally eat my fucking socks.

Most of the time, its only because of an invention he’s created, or a solution he’s made up on the fly, that he and his brothers survive to the next day. But then, half of those times, he doesn’t even get a thank you! Frequently, he’s ignored, pushed to the side, and has his rightful glory stolen by one of his brothers.

And yet, despite all that, he’s brilliant and creative and so damn hopeful. Donnie finds extra time around all his other responsibilities to create exciting and playful things, for himself and his brothers.

But because of the shit circumstances his family has, (and they do, they’re living in the sewers, and fighting a war with literal garbage as their weapons resource), he’s been forced to give up much of his light hearted inventing and sciencing, in favor of becoming a soldier and military geared engineer. All for his family, he creates incredible inventions from garbage; to defend them, heal them, and attack their enemies with.

Even before they started the war, Donnie probably didn’t get to really enjoy a carefree life.

He’s probably always been the guy who fixed everything, and everyone. The fridge broke? He’s got it. Water turning toxic? He can reroute a new source. Their stolen cable not working? Time to go monkey with the highly dangerous wires again. Someone got hurt during training? Someone is sick with an unidentified illness? He’s got his books, his computer, and what medicine he’s scrounged. He’s got you.

Best/worst part of all that? Its all self taught. He sure as hell didn’t learn how to build a fully operational vehicle-turned literal tank from his father, or learn how to treat their family’s unique physiology safely, and successfully, when they got sick or injured. That’s all him, purely and simply him.

Donnie is a genius, yes, but that is some other level shit right there. Learning and self-teaching himself years and years worth of college education, probably all from water-damaged text books that came from a garbage heap.

When the fuck did this kid get to be a kid, once his family figured out he could be the answer to everything?

Give Donnie credit, and a damn day off.

Yes, on this day last year, the episode Too Far aired, which set our hearts aflame with a new ship.

And what a year it has been, eh, my fellow shippers?

Alright here we go, I'm NOT going to give any hate, but I ask you this. Why do you ship Amedot. I am genuinely curious to find out why. As a die-hard Lapidot shipper, I want to understand the other side of this shipping war. I want to know what makes YOU ship Amedot. Is it the color schemes? Is it the fan-fusions? Do you see yourself one one of them? Is it their dynamic? I want to know. I like Lapidot for the nice blue-greens. Maybe you like for the more exciting purple greens, I'm very curious.

First, I wanna hug you for being a decent human being.

Second, I’d like to answer your question: you may recall that moment in Too Far where Peridot saves Amethyst by pushing her out of harm’s way and landing on top of her and having THAT MOMENT where they are just staring at each other for several seconds before Amethyst is forced to remind Peri that she’s still basically straddling her, causing her to leap off in a flustered hurry. As an anime fan, I’ve seen this trope used all too often to set the tone for the main canon ship on the onset of many a rom com. And we all know that Ms Sugar is very familiar with anime and their popular tropes and story telling devices and has even used them in the past, particularly the very same trope where the character throws themselves at their future partner to push them out of danger (Ruby to Sapphire, Steven to Connie). It was even referred to as outrageously romantic by Rebecca herself.

Follow that up with Too Short to Ride where the Shorty Squad spends the day together and Amethyst tries her hardest to win Peridot her prized alien plushie (another dating trope) and Amethyst gives Peridot that speech about liking her for who she was, powers or no.

Then in Beta, believe it or not; the moment where Peridot greets her first and with great enthusiasm, trying so hard to be funny (because Amethyst dubbed her funny and ever since she’s been practicing her comedy) and trying so much to impress her (because Steven was already impressed with her meep morps and Peridot was urgently emphasising “guests” that need to be impressed, which means that “guests” was code for “Amethyst”), and trying, trying to make Ames, the big A, feel better about herself because she knows what it’s like to feel small and inadequate and defective and she knows how sensitive Amethyst is about those things, and she’s going to do whatever it takes, take her wherever she needs to go, to make that bitterness and hurt go away.

So yeah, basically, I usually only go after ships that have shown me significant reasons why a couple could plausibly, should probably get together. I’m a novelist by trade, and from a writing standpoint, all signs point to Amedot having the best shot of all the unconfirmed ships of becoming canon. Lapi///dot has evidence to be sure, don’t get me wrong. I can see the appeal. But hey, Too Far happened first, and it’s likely that yet another anime trope is at play here, that the first suitor the character interacts with in a significant way is likely to be the ship confirmed in the endgame. Amedot grabbed me first and held fast, and it’s not likely to let me go anytime soon.

Amedot Bomb 2 Day 7 - Anything

I used this opportunity of free choice to draw Amethyst and Peridot as Madokami and Homucifer respectively.

There are two versions here, one with Amedot colours and one with the official Madoka Magica colours.

This Amedot bomb has been a real eye opener for me, doing a drawing a day of these two has made me appreciate my own drawing abilities, and the pairing itself, all the more. Can’t wait for the next Amedot Bomb!

Amedot Bomb 2 Day 6 - Animals

Going with the Phoenix/Dragon design because I’ve always wanted to draw Amethyst as a dragon, and I thought a Phoenix-style dress would look good on Peridot, given that she can’t shapeshift the way Amethyst does.

Not to mention it’s a fun juxtaposition to the traditional “Dragon and Phoenix in a fight” you see on kimono and in print work.
