Oh, I tried to send you away when I felt my heartstrings pull in a new direction! But you were so sad, sitting there all alone, and you distracted me long enough to watch the last train car roll by. 

I wanted to cross the ocean that day. But I could never cross you.

Where were you going that night? I had made tea, after your assurance that you could stay long enough to share a cup. Yet when I stepped into the living room with a tray of fragrant jasmine and a pair of your favorite scones, you were halfway out the door.

“I have somewhere to be,” you said before disappearing into the lonely hall.

I did not chase after you. I did not call. I only sat confused, and let the tea grow cold. It was not the first time you abandoned me. But it was the last time.

Now your face is gray stone. Your eyes read your name and your lips murmur pretty words someone else wrote about you. “Beloved daughter and friend,” you like to say.

I can see you from my window, here in the fourth floor apartment. You are always surrounded by flowers and loved ones. Would it be terrible to tell you I’m jealous? Maybe you had the right idea, going wherever you did, leaving me alone.

24. To Say hello

Grace walked into the conference room, which had just been cleaned. The rolling chairs were pushed neatly against the long, white table, all of them spaced at perfectly even intervals. She was alone in there except for the tech guy, who was setting up the computer for the afternoon presentation.

Grace approached the man, a short, skinny fellow with blonde hair. When she got close enough, he looked up from his task to offer a polite smile. His cheeks were full of freckles, and his eyes were a charming green.

“Help you, ma’am?” he asked.

“Just wanted to introduce myself so things wouldn’t be awkward. My name is Grace Hall, I’m the presenter today,” she explained.

The man immediately stood up from the chair, moving so quickly that he almost knocked the thing over. He thrust his hand forward as he stammered an apology.

“Sorry, Miss Hall. I didn’t realize--It’s an honor to meet you, I mean. My name’s Billy,” he said.

Grace kindly took his hand to shake it.

“A pleasure to meet you, Billy,” she said, smiling warmly.

Mara’s Mercy, my Elder Scrolls fanfic centering around a non-Dragonborn recruit in the Companions, is on its 10th chapter.

The protagonist, Ellenor, struggles against her tendencies as a mage and her conflicted feelings about her talents because of the two extremes she was raised by as a child. These feelings are amplified as her past slowly resurrects itself and she is thrown into situations she thought herself to be well beyond.

She struggles to find her place in Jorrvaskr and once she finally does, she is cruelly ripped away from it. Now it is up to Vilkas and Farkas to be her advocates and fight to bring her back. Vilkas, however, is dealing with his own conflicts of emotion, which will make things particularly difficult in the realm of the Mad God.

Motivation is overrated. No amount of motivation would’ve gotten me through hours of my accounting textbook. No “vision” is enough to keep me awake til the crack of dawn on an essay that I don’t even know if the professor will check. Discipline is what determines how far you go. On those days when your cute little list of #goals and vision of yourself 5 years from now aren’t enough, discipline will pull you out of bed and get you to work. I wish I knew this in high school because I thought I couldn’t work without motivation. I wasted so much time trying to find purpose before I realized that working now, albeit blindly, will ensure that I could chase any purpose I discover in the future. Sure, motivation is crucial, but it’s not consistent. It’s not reliable. You can only rely on yourself and your grit.
