ok @friendliestneighbour here’s your rant lol sorry you had to wait softball was intense and this isn’t quite as thorough as i was going to be bc i lowk am about to fall asleep but if you still want to learn more you can always ask. this is mostly about episode one since that’s where a lot of worldbuilding takes place but i’ll go over the main plot points in each season soon (if you still want to hear about it). this will probably sound silly and childish, and that’s mostly the point! it’s a kids show that likes to make fun of traditional tropes and be funny and silly. there’s some amazing plot, but it’s built with assistance from this crazy fantasy world. part of why i like it is because it’s so easy to watch. it makes me laugh, and hopefully it’ll make you laugh too.
okie dokie so the owl house is an animated show that debuted in 2020 on disney channel. while it was set to have as many as 5-7 seasons, disney cancelled it roughly halfway through the second season and made it so they (dana terrence and her team) could only finish season two and make three 40 minute episodes for season 3 (which everyone in the fandom is still rightfully mad asf about, even though season 3 turned out beautifully). it was cancelled because disney stated that it no longer “fit the brand”, due to its marketing to older teens and potentially its heavily lgbtq+ themes and disney’s rather homophobic past (sapphic protagonist romance! nonbinary characters! all sorts of wonderful queer representation! which disney hates. ugh).
anyway, the main character is a young girl named luz noceda who is incredibly creative and intelligent, but who gets into a lot of scrapes because of her “overactive” imagination. after one too many run-ins with bullies and the principal’s office, her mom sends her to a summer camp meant to help her conform (important note: this is NOT out of malice! her mother had experienced similar bullying as a child and wanted to protect her daughter. did she go about it in the right way? not really, but her decision is ultimately what pushes luz into the most important part of her life: her experiences in the demon realm). the issue is: luz never arrives at summer camp. to prove to her mom that she’s leaving her fantasy worlds behind, she puts her favorite fantasy book in the trash, and when she turns to get it back it’s not there! it’s been taken by a small brown owl creature (who we later learn is named owlbert) with the rest of the trash). as she chases the owl to get her book back, she encounters a spooky-looking old house that it enters. she follows, there’s a flash of light, and suddenly she’s not in a house anymore, but in a giant tent filled with strange goods from the human realm. she creeps up to the front only to find an eccentric looking woman with a head of thick, gray hair, a golden fang, and a red dress about to set it on fire! she runs up grabs it, and tries to make a getaway back to the portal when the lady closes it with a strange key. who is this woman? she’s none other than eda the owl lady (aka eda clawthorne), a witch on the run from the law for various crimes, but most egregiously for being a wild witch, or a witch who refused to conform to the law of only following one path of magic and taking on a coven sigil. as a wild witch, she can practice every type of magic and is actually the most powerful witch on the boiling isles (aka the part of the demon realm that most of the series takes place in. it’s a land made out of and sitting on the bones of a titan: a one of many legendary demons who died thousands of years ago (which is mostly covered in late season 2 and season 3, so we’ll get into that later)). eda makes a proposal to luz: help her and her tiny sidekick/adopted child/friend named king get king’s crown back from the dreaded warden wrath in the conformatorium, and eda would reopen the portal and send luz home. seeing as there was no other way home (and because luz is incredibly curious), she agrees, and off they go! king needs his crown because once upon a time he had been a mighty king of demons (allegedly) and the crown gave him powers, which he lost when it was taken and only a human can get it back due to a spell. they make their way to the conformatorium, which is basically a jail except that half of the people there haven’t even committed any crimes, they just like things that are considered “weird”. their only crime is not conforming to the standard. luz learns all this inside the conformatorium with king after being floated up to a window by eda while she went to distract the warden. she feels bad for these weirdos who did nothing wrong, but she can’t free them alone. so she and king move on, find the crown, and luz grabs it and returns it. the twist: it’s a burger king crown! it means nothing and gives king no powers. but because it’s important to him, eda was determined to get it back for him (she’s loyal like that). but, uh oh! warden wrath comes along and confronts luz, eda, and king. he rips king’s crown to shreds and restrains luz and king and chops off eda’s head (gasp!). luckily for all of us watching, eda can detach her limbs and isn’t really bothered by being removed from her body. wrath has a strange request: he wants eda to go out with him! she refuses (since, yknow, he cut off her head) and frees luz and king (luz actually helps during the fight, and it’s her first taste of what’s to come). all three escape on owlbert, who is actually a palisman: a flying staff that can turn into a little pet friend (or a pal… see what they did? pal talisman?). hold on my word count ran out
