at the beginning of june we were all convinced dan and phil had died and would never return and here we are at the very end and they’re both out and proud gay men and interacting with us more than ever

The difference between Dan and Phil’s acceptance with being gay really shows how an environment can make you or break you. Phil has, for the most part, been out for years. His parents were okay with it, he had supportive friends, and when it came to announcing it to us, there was no hesitation. I have a feeling that, if not for Dan, Phil wouldn’t have waited this long to come out.

Dan, on the other hand, grew up with parents who made comments demeaning the lgbt community (even if it wasn’t a direct intention), and friends who did the same. He was ruthlessly bullied and instead of having a community he could come out to (like Phil did in college), he hid further and further within himself and rejected who he was completely.

Their videos showed many similarities but also huge differences, and that’s why they’re both so important. It should also be a huge neon sign flashing in peoples faces showing why some people wait to come out while others don’t.
