the fact that community colleges are seen as less valid and for “stupid” people is a result of classism and in this essay I will-

ppl in the tags saying that it’s “genuinely a lesser tier of education because people go there for trades and nursing and thats about it” are just proving that its classism. bc a) no thats absolutely not correct. a good chunk of people that go to community colleges do so to knock out their gen eds at a lower price than they’d be if they went to a four year, then transfer to a four year. and more importantly b) trade professions are not lesser than other professions that take higher degrees. people who go into things that take associates degrees are not “stupid”.

if you think ppl who are too poor to attend a four year university for all four years, or that ppl who are too poor to/don’t want to get their bachelor’s/master’s/doctorate are “stupid” then i have news for you:

damn right it’s classism. just wait til you’re at your prestigious university and sitting with your adviser and it turns out you’re not on track to complete your degree in the timeframe you should be because, idk, you took an elective that was SUPPOSED to count towards your degree but whoops turns out it doesn’t after all and now you need to take a speech or algebra or chemistry or some bullshit like that. only it’s not available at your university except for students in particular, other degree paths, or only at certain times, which doesn’t align with your degree timetable. so your adviser sighs and says “okay well we have a good relationship with x community college nearby and they offer this class almost every semester, i’m pretty sure they’re offering it this summer, if you enroll there as a transient student you can take that class this summer and have it transfer back here and be back on track to get your degree on time” happens all the gotdamn time. so damn many state and private colleges and universities send their students to us for this all the time. you know why? because it’s the exact same education. exact same quality, same material. it’s just cheaper, and typically a closer and more attentive learning environment, too. the only reason you didn’t think “gee maybe i should just do all my basics and prerequisites at a community college for two years and transfer to X University to hit my degree specific courses and finish there after two more years at like a fraction of the cost of all 4 years at X”? stigma. classism. i hope your massive student loan debt soothes your pride the next time you look down on community colleges.

My community college started offering bachelors degrees a few years ago and I decided to stay for all four years. I had some people in my class that moved back home from universities because they were way too expensive and they told me that the classes at the community college were way tougher than their university. My sister said the same thing when she went back to school (after graduating from a university) because her degree got her nothing but massive debt. We had professors that graduated from Harvard, we used the same books as universities used, and we had MORE work. I graduated with no debt and never had to spend a penny on housing, while my sister has over $30,000 in debt for a degree she never used. Don’t knock state/community colleges.
