I've loved The Beatles since I was a kid learning to play the guitar, spinning my Dad's vintage albums and working out classics like Baby, You Can Drive My Car, Nowhere Man, Yesterday and Yellow Submarine on my acoustic. As a "one-man-band" multi-instrument-playing guy, I've always wondered what it would be like to put together a "Brady Bunch" style video with multiple "me"s singing or playing together. Sounded like fun, but I knew it would take a lot of work, too.
In early 2015, I hatched a plan, bought some colored felt, borrowed some lights and a camera, set up my mics and recorded the audio and video simultaneously over many late nights after my family was asleep. Then, I edited the audio and began diving into compositing the videos together. Sadly, the imperfections of tempo, video quality and other aspects of my performances began to discourage me and in the end, I lost that battle to self-doubt, and shelved the whole project.
Fast-forward five years to spring of 2020 in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. During one of the few times I've had an opportunity to get out of the house and drive during the #stayhome directive, something brought this project to mind again. That evening, I looked at the video pieces again at home, listened to the audio track and thought about what it would take to finally complete this music video. Happily, I decided that now was as good a time as ever to saddle back up and finish.
So, here is my joy-filled, decidedly imperfect but hopefully smile-inducing cover of one of my lifelong favorite Beatles tunes, Day Tripper.
