personal hc that this was the start of victors and sweets relationship, but before it got heavy, like victor was just someone at the school sweet admired who would always tell him stories of the frobisher smythes and the history of the school through a grandeur lens, and sweet who loves history devoured it all. but in line with victor wanting anything the frobishers touched, when he hears about the gem coming to the school he gently nudges sweet into the idea of taking it, maybe making statements about how it should be on display in the house they lived not in some trophy with people who won’t appreciate it’s worth. and the idea gets stuck in sweets head and he tells his friend (jerome’s dad) who has a knack for getting into (age appropriate) trouble, who tells his other friends and they all get the idea steal it, thinking it’s a harmless rival school prank, but when things go wrong jerome’s dad takes the fall, sweet not being able to own up to his part
thinking about this again. maybe after jerome’s dad takes the fall is when the relationship between sweet and victor changes. a common thing you see in adults grooming children is the adult making the child feel guilty or like they owe something to the adult. maybe sweet starts feeling guilty for not receiving his share of the consequences for the gem theft and confides in victor, and victor subtlety blackmails him with the guilt, which his how sweet eventually gets inducted into the society
