Remarkably Bright Creatures dir. Olivia Newman | 2026
People love to make fun of Archeologists for how often we say objects were used ritualistically, as if we overuse that designation or just say it when we a don't know what something was used for. But that's only because people don't stop to think how full of ritual all of our lives are.
The meme is actually correct for the most part, hotdogs are ritually consumed during baseball games. Lots of people only even eat hotdogs if they're watching baseball. The expectation for us to eat turkey on thanksgiving is another example of us ritually consuming food. Drinking coffee every morning is another ritual we do. Going to the gym several days a week is a ritual.
"Ritual" doesn't necessarily mean "religious."
yes conservatism is on the rise yes tradwife content is as popular as ever yes pink jobs and blue jobs are fucking stupid BUT there is still such a big change in how straight women are talking about relationships online.
they're talking about how they're no longer interested in dating because their female friends treat them better than boyfriends do. they're realizing that being single is always better than being in a bad relationship. it's becoming a lot more normal and fun and hot for women to be single at any age. the women who have settled down with truly good men in truly happy relationships are encouraging other women to not take any shit because the right man won't need to be "trained". they're talking about how their mothers and grandmothers warned them to get a job and not get married, and they followed the advice.
tradwife content is performance. it's propaganda. there are so few women actually living that life. but we know for a fact that more women than ever are educated, working, and single. and all I see (admittedly in my woke ass algorithm) is women talking about how they're done settling for mediocre relationships. and I love it.
The rise in tradwife propaganda isn't a sign we're losing. It's a sign we're winning. They need to push this propaganda because women are increasingly waking up and being open about the consequences of trad dynamics. And that terrifies conservatives because their control over women and the family unit is how they exercise control over society.
there are a NUMBER of folktale Woman-Creatures like selkies who exist to make the inherently coercive nature of heterosexual marriage explicit and to externalize male anxiety about how if your wife had actual autonomy she very well might disappear and you might never fucking hear from her again
which is a FASCINATING category of Woman-Creature imo
someone said it's also a cautionary tale about mistreating your wife and I think that's spot on especially for other related types of stories e.g. the crane wife. like I think these stories are very much Husband Anxiety Stories. the Woman-Creatures are black boxes whose interior experience it is impossible to know and who have strange and often seemingly arbitrary rules that you must follow or else they will disappear. idk. like. that's why I think that any empowering-to-women-ness qualities of these stories is incidental. I think they're externalized anxiety about coercive societal heterosexuality and the inability to truly Know one's wife in such circumstances.
you also see a variant of this formula a lot (generally at the more literary end of the fairy tale space) where it's not a creature you capture, but a magical lady who picks you for seemingly arbitrary reasons, bettering your fortune enormously with her magic and wealth and second-hand status.
and then, for reasons usually at least slightly less arbitrary, fucks off again.
the husbandly anxiety here is more about not having access to coercion as an option.
oooo yes absolutely!
was just talking to Story about this and he told me about one folktale where a guy meets a beautiful woman at a lake and she brings a bountiful dowry of like one million fat cows and such and she is of course a fairy so she's like "my one requirement in our bargain is that if you strike me three times I will leave" and in many versions of the story the husband doesn't ""actually"" strike her -- each time it's something like, one 'strike' involves her forgetting her gloves inside and he walks out and taps her on the shoulder with her gloves, but she tells him that counts as striking her. this sort of thing. which is TRANSPARENTLY like "whoa wouldn't it be fucked up if your wife could enforce consequences for behavior she said was harmful, even if according to your cultural norms it was fine, and you didn't see it as a big deal?" like... lol. what if women could actually be the ones who decided whether or not any given action their husbands took against them was harmful? IMAGINE... PREDEY SCARY....

There's a real meanness and selfishness to Violet Bridgerton that doesn't get acknowledged enough.
She only shows real warmth and interest in her adult kids in order to coax them into living out love stories for her, or as a reward for getting involved in romance.
When they push back or resist, she is cold and resentful.
When they don't play the parts she has assigned to them, she is cold and resentful.
She never shows interest in their lives, their interests or abilities, outside of romance.
And even when they do look for love, like Francesca, but do it "wrong", when it's not the dramatic, swooning love story that she prefers, she resents that too.
And even though she pushes and pushes her daughters into marriage, she gives them absolutely no preparation for what that entails.
She sends them merrily off into marriage with no information about sex whatsoever, leaving them exposed to all sorts of discomfort and mistreatment, because if her daughters haven't been told what to expect, they're not going to be able to tell when something is wrong.
She doesn't see her children as fully fledged human beings, but as means to live out love stories again.
I honestly think that Violet Bridgerton's treatment of Eloise in s4 would be more sympathetic if it was motivated by more practical reasons due to how spinsters are seen and treated in their society rather than forcing her own beliefs of "true love" onto her child. Becos yes, Eloise's decision to stay on the shelf willingly is transgressive for the period, but it also leaves her vulnerable as she's now financially dependent on Anthony for the rest of her life (much like Jane Austen).
Violet is really just incapable of supporting her kids in anything but marriage seeking.
Violet would be so much more likable if she was concerned about the potential of Eloise being isolated from society, instead of almost gleeful at the thought of shoving her off into the spinster chaperone role as a punishment. if she encouraged Eloise to be friends with the other ladies of the ton and enjoy the social aspect of the season without the pressure of marriage hunting, so at least Eloise can have some social life. If she tried to help Eloise find friends with mutual interests, instead of dismissing any intent of Eloise's that isn't marriage.
this is what i mean by them just being unable to do a story arc over several seasons, violet seemed to have finally come to a place with eloise where she could just let her be esp bc it’s just so obvious anthony is happy to let eloise live with him forever & they’re rich enough that he can do that for her and now they’re like no violet is forcing eloise to marry once again and im sure when eloise inevitably starts lashing out about it they’re gonna try to humble her by pointing out some girls ~have to~ or ~want to~ get married as if she isn’t aware of that and also has made it abundantly clear that she herself does not want marriage for herself and resents being forced constantly to be threatened with it no matter how much she conforms to society’s expectations of her behavior
Fiyero is a fucking terrorist. Why do you want him with Elphaba ?!
In what fucking universe is Fiyero a terrorist ?!
@elphabathropp-www
Well Elphaba is also a terrorist, so they are terrorists together!
Wicked is about looking at things another way btw.
and not to sound like a conspiracy theorist but another reason I hate the return of 2000’s th*nspo shit is bc starving does make women frail and has longer term consequences like early osteoporosis, brittle bones/teeth, insomnia, ect. Your muscles will start eating themselves. It also makes you extremely emotional and severely lowers your capacity for critical thinking not bc you’re a girl but because your brain isn’t getting any fucking nutrients so idk I just feel like its very convenient that every time there’s an uptick in fascist rhetoric and women’s rights are being stripped suddenly it’s peak fashion for women to be starving, weak, and exhausted
