top of my head, there's myself, I write southern gothic horror in line with Toni Morrison and Shirley Jackson; there's @frognonbinary, wrote the amazing YOU SHOULD HAVE BEEN NICER TO MY MOM and WE CAME TO WELCOME YOU; Jewelle Gomez, writer of THE GILDA STORIES, a Black lesbian vampire story, sooo good! Of course, Rivers Solomon, P. Djeli Clark, Victor LaValle, Tananarive Due (who also has a vampire book series, the iconic African Immortals Series...), and literally so many others. White people will give you nothing but a headache.

What's most frustrating to me is that they have retroactively turned this fandom into a hostile space for anyone who cares about the first 2 seasons. Any thoughtful analysis of Louis and claudia's relationship going forward or the abuse they suffered at the hands of lestat, armand, will now immediately be shot down by racist fans saying "well ghost!claudia said this". I don't see myself interacting with this show at all in the future. Rest in peace to my good friends Louis and Claudia.

I keep thinking about a question I got at TAFCON something along the lines of "how do you keep up passion to finish a project"?

And writing is a very romanticized field, so is basically everything/anything creative. There are many stories about passionate painters and sculptors and poets.

But I have never ever managed to be passionate to the end of a project. Never. There are parts where passion is rekindled, where I enjoy what I am doing and it is great and beautiful and lovely. I do love putting together dialogue edits and suddenly hearing people having a conversation instead of me repeating lines in a room. I love how things sound after I add the sound design.

But I think there's a very large part of writing that is closer to marriage or a dedicated friendship, where I am doing it because I choose to. I finish projects because it is an active decision I make over and over and over again. Even if, at times, it feels more like a chore to be done than a passion to be swept away by.

I finish projects because somewhere in me, I think it's a task worth doing for the sake of doing. And sometimes it just fucking sucks. Sometimes I hate writing, sometimes I have to drag myself to the microphone or psych myself up to do sound design.

Sometimes writing is a job and you just have to keep plugging away until it's time to clock out and you feel like you're free. And other times it is what everyone says it is, it is magical, and beautiful, and easy and fun.

But you can't rely on it being that way all the time. Sometimes you must run on something other than passion.
