I gave my players a toilet from a wizards tower. When asked how it worked I told them it disintegrated any material placed in side. They jimmied the toilet up and took it with them. They later used it to kill a dragon.

I had no idea how to manage my rambunctious players when I first started out DMing.  I got frustrated with them constantly talking over me/each other, so I invented a cursed item called the Sword of Silence; anyone who tried to talk without holding the sword would take 1D4 damage.  Had my first TPK and stormed off in a huff! (I was a 12 year old with no social skills, don’t judge me too harshly!)

I once had a very elaborate political intrigue portion of a campaign derailed by a PC who decided it would be more fun to burn the parliament building down with everyone inside instead.

I had a very under leveled party accidentally wander into one of the end game dungeons. I didn't want to risk a tpk so soon (this was like... Session three of what was planned to be a long and glorious campaign).

I added a riddle door kinda on the fly to stop them from getting too much further. It was intended to give them a short challenge and then eventually reveal that they needed to come back later with a particular artifact or something.

The parties response? It talked, so clearly they could seduce it. The ranger got a natural 20, and I suddenly had to find a way to logic a door falling in love with this random adventurer.

Fun times! That story is still infamous in my gaming group

It’s not just a technical language issue. This would affect prison labor- prison is where legal slave labor happens in the U.S. There’s a lot of corporate interests- private prisons, for one- who don’t want this amendment to pass, because it would cut into their ability to profit from the labor of prisoners. I’m no longer a Colorado voter since I moved to Montana, but if you live in Colorado, vote yes on amendment A!

This is huge.

I grew up not too far from the Supermax facility. Prison labor, particulary in private prisons, is little more than slavery.

California is a good example. They train their inmates as Firefighters. Good training. The same or better in fact than what alot of firefighters get outside the prison system. They're then deployed on wildfires, risking their lives to protect others for no compensation.

The worst part? Even with the training, they are unable to get jobs as fire fighters once they're out of jail, since it's a government position and their incarceration prevents them from being hires for those positions.

I'm registered in Washington this year, and we have our own battles to fight. But I sincerely hope that Coloradans turn out and vote this bastardized version if modern slavery out of existance.

People don’t often look back on the early 1900’s for advice, but what if we could actually learn something from the Lost Generation? The New York Public Library has digitized 100 “how to do it” cards found in cigarette boxes over 100 years ago, and the tips they give are so practical that millennials reading this might want to take notes.

Back in the day, cigarette cards were popular collectibles included in every pack, and displayed photos of celebrities, advertisements, and more. Gallaher cigarettes, a UK-founded tobacco company that was once the largest in the world, decided to print a series of helpful how-to’s on their cards, which ranged from mundane tasks (boiling potatoes) to unlikely scenarios (stopping a runaway horse). Most of them are insanely clever, though, like how to make a fire extinguisher at home. Who even knew you could do that?

The entire set of life hacks is now part of the NYPL’s George Arents Collection. Check out some of the cleverest ones we could find below. You never know when you’ll have to clean real lace!

I work in a hospital. It’s also the worst flu season in recent years in my hospital. You know whose job is one of the most crucial for EVERYONE, doctors and medical staff included? Janitors. Go ahead and try to have a safe working environment, ESPECIALLY in the medical field, without them.

Tell me, do you know how to best create a medically safe work environment? Because I sure as fuck don’t, but the janitors do, and they know this while being on their feet and performing manually exhausting tasks for 8+ hours straight surrounded by caustic chemicals.

Same goes for fast food workers. Do you have any idea how much knowledge and physical work goes into working in a kitchen? Wanna tell me you put out grease fires, what temperatures different foods are stored in, and how to keep a safe working environment for both customers and workers in a job surrounded by hot oil, ovens and chemicals? Not to mention, again, being on your feet for 8+ hours in a hot kitchen being yelled at by customers constantly.

I promise you that these people do a more difficult and oftentimes more important job than a large portion of office jobs I’ve been in.

Fun fact: In my neck of the woods, hospital janitorial staff union wanted a pay raise. Their workers were struggling. The hospitals laughed at them, so they went on full strike.

The hospitals were in crisis mode within an HOUR.

Surgical rooms were not being cleaned, toilets and patient rooms were not cleaned, garbage was not picked up, instruments that get reused were not being cleaned (i.e. scalpels, patient beds), laundry wasn’t done, floors were not clean, biohazard waste wasn’t collected.

The hospitals folded the next day and the union got EVERYTHING they asked for.

Now, you may not work in a hospital @purest-rain but wherever you do work, just imagine what might happen if… suddenly no one cleaned. No one picks up the trash in that fancy office. No one vacuums or sweeps, or cleans anything. Nothing. Not the toilets, not the offices. It might take a little longer, but pretty soon, those fancy law-offices look pretty gross, don’t they? Especially the bathrooms. I’ve cleaned bathrooms, I know exactly how disgusting people are when they use a toilet they don’t have to clean.

Stop shitting on low-wage workers just because you don’t understand how important their job actually is. You cannot simultaneously demand a service, while dehumanizing the person who provides you with it, and demanding they not be compensated fairly.

The fact that so many people are getting so defensive about this is disgustingly sad. If you think “anyone can do it” then YOU do it. The job is necessary for your convenience, so fucking be a little more goddamn appreciative.

I hate the stigma that anyone can do fast food service, or work in a grocery store. It's not an easy job. And honestly its not really entry level either.

I recently went from working in Audio Visual for a high end Venue to working in a grocery store. Coffee bar half the time, bakery the other half.

I'm working harder than I did, overall, for AV. The hours are shorter. 8hrs a day vrs 10-12. But I'm moving more, standing and walking more, and I have to be every bit as accurate, and much much faster.

If you work for an office job, and you look down on fast food workers, then you're basically saying that you think you could do their job better than them.

Do you know how long milk can be out of the refrigerator before it legally has to be thrown away? If you get that wrong in food service, you could give someone a very dangerous and potentially deadly foodbourne illness.

Do you know how to safely thaw pork? Or how a refrigerator needs to be stocked in order to maintain proper food safety?

Do you know how hot milk needs to be for a latte? Or even how much milk goes into one? Or the difference between a Latte and a Flat White? What about a cortado? Or a campagno? Do you even know what those are?

What about how much time you have after pulling an espresso shot until it dies? Do you know how to save it?

Or how long does drip coffee stay fresh?

Do you know what measures need to be met in order for a food item to be considered organic? There are legal requirements to be met. What about Gluten Free?

That's litterally the top things that popped into my head. And that doesn't even touch on the logs and paperwork required by law for food safety. Most have to be completed every 4 hours, no matter how busy you are.

It also doesn't touch on things like working the register, or any of the customer service pieces.

I've been at the job for almost two and a half months. And I'm still being trained. There is so much I haven't even begun to learn yet. Compare that to AV, and I could perform all aspects of my job within a week and a half.

There is no such thing as unskilled labor. We even had a team member put back into training on how to properly lift boxes recently. That should be easy, right?

But could you lift 50-100lb boxes safely for 8 hours a day? Could you do it without seriously injuring yourself or someone else?

Let me repeat that thought. There is no such thing as unskilled labor. Only undervalued jobs.
