The forest was quiet, Eywa was quiet, the tension in the air was constricting.
Kiri couldn't feel her as much today, as if she too was holding her breath.
Something had clearly happened between you, Neteyam and Lo'ak. Lo'ak was quieter than usual, he was nervous, and rightfully so.
Kiri liked you, she really did; but she couldn't help but be a bit cautious of you. Everyone was, she hadn't forgotten when you had lunged at Neteyam, eyes blazing, weapon raised high above your head and ready to plunge it in her brother's heart. And you would of, if he hadn't reacted in time.
Mum was right, you were dangerous, but you weren't a danger, she was sure of it.
But doubts were starting to creep into Kiri.
You weren't doing anything unusual right now, just walking, observing, almost tracking the movements of everything and everyone around you. But you were always like that, just now your gaze was actively avoiding Neteyam.
Speaking of, Neteyam seemed different, a different kind of different than he usually was around you. He was more tense, watching your every move, but it wasn't out of malice or mistrust; it was out of concern.
Kiri's eyes widened as the realisation hit her; Neteyam was looking out for you, he cared, well she knew he cared, but this type of care was familiar.
It was familiar in the way that Dad had used to watch Mum when she was pregnant with Tuk.
Kiri saw Spider attempt to make eye contact with her, realising that she had figured something out.
She gently shook her head at him, and he nodded.
The walk to Tuk's favourite lake was short, but still just as tense.
Tuk either didn't notice or didn't comment on it as she quickly launched herself into the lake.
Kiri was sure she saw the corner of your lip twitch, but it was gone as quick as it came.
She walked over to you, waving off Spider's concerned face.
"You should swim with us." She stated.
Your eyes flicked over to her, before shrugging delicately.
"That water looks far too warm for my liking." You replied, watching as Lo'ak, who had gotten in as well, tugged Spider in roughly.
"Are you used to colder water?" Kiri asked, blissfully ignoring her oldest brother who had not gotten in yet, despite Tuk's pleading.
He was watching the two of you.
Your eyes narrowed slightly, as if surprised by her boldness.
Your reply was short and simple, it was clearly meant to be the end of the conversation; but Kiri ignored this.
"Only when needed; why all the questions Kiri? What do you want to know?" You asked, turning to face her fully now.
Your stance was not defensive or hostile, which Kiri saw as progress.
"Why is Neteyam so different around you? It is odd."
"That is something you should ask him, I do not know why."
"Yes you do, I can see it in your eyes." Kiri insisted.
Your jaw ticked, and Kiri almost took a step back in worry, but she resisted.
If she wanted you to answer her questions, she needed to prove herself as worthy, she had to follow your strange mentality.
After a moment, you nodded, whether in agreement or approval, Kiri wasn't sure.
"Not here." You gestured to a tree behind them.
The two of you walked over to it, and climbed up, Kiri noting that you seemed cautious while climbing.
"Hey! Where are you two going?" Lo'ak called out from the lake below; halting both of you about a quarter of the way up.
"Girl talk, you're not invited." Kiri replied for you both, making a shooing motion with one hand.
"I want to come!" Tuk announced, jumping up to get out before being pushed down gently by Neteyam.
You flinched, as if you had forgotten he was there, Kiri made note of that.
"No Tuktuk, you dragged us out here to swim, so you are swimming." Neteyam spoke up, holding her firmly as she squirmed and complained in his hold.
Kiri giggled before climbing up farther while Neteyam splashed everyone else in the water, an evident distraction.
You followed her, notably slower but still determined.
Kiri stopped about half way up, waiting for you to catch up.
You two were high enough that you were out of sight from the others, but could still see them if you leant down to peer through the branches.
"You don't climb trees often?" Kiri asked, watching as you carefully sat down on a branch near her.
"I climb, just not trees." You replied, resting your arms on a branch that was conveniently in front of the branch you were on.
Kiri nodded, dropping your gaze for a moment.
"Go on, ask your questions, just... say that you will not tell the others, especially Neteyam and your parents."
Kiri hesitated before nodding again.
"I won't, I swear on the Great Mother's name."
"Right then, I choose to... trust you, ask away."
Kiri thought for a moment, collecting herself before leaning forward on her branch a bit.
"Why do you... why are you so secretive? You were scared when you accidentally told Neteyam something about your tribe; you were willing to kill for it... I don't understand why."
Your face was unreadable for a moment, before you exhaled somewhat shakily.
"I... am a Sky Person by blood as you know, and well... I was saved by my tribe, then granted the ability to breathe by the Great Mother; but that doesn't mean I am accepted, well I am, I have proven myself as a warrior, but there is still doubt about me, that some monster in me will awaken and I will become... like them-"
You paused for breath, before stiffening again.
"-But, it does not mean I am unloved, before you get ideas, it is just... different where I am from Kiri, our culture is different, our tribes are different."
Kiri, who had been sullenly listening to you, replied softly.
"But we are not so different, I'm not like my siblings, even though I share certain traits with them-"
"You are chosen." You interrupted suddenly, surprising the both of you.
"Eywa, she made me part of the people, I felt her for the first time in... full light, full colour at an age that I could remember; you feel similar, it is why I cannot be as closed off with you." You admitted reluctantly.
"I may seem the opposite to the others, but I cannot with you, because you are special Kiri deep inside; you feel like the Great Mother, because you are special, please do not forget this fact, even in your darkest moments."
Kiri was shocked into silence, mouthing opening and closing a few times before smiling shyly.
"I- Thank you (Name), I don't-"
"Don't get used to it, I am not an easy complimentor." You grumbled, though you were smiling.
Kiri smiled back before deciding to dive straight in.
"I have another question... why don't you trust-"
"Hey!!!! Are you two done yet! I want to come!!" Tuk's voice interrupted, calling up with a pout.
"Yeah!! The lake is not as fun without easy targets to splash bro!" Lo'ak's voice called up as well.
Both you and Kiri groaned in unison; causing Tuk to giggle.
"She is in a good mood for once, don't ruin this for me!"
You laughed, unable to help yourself.
"See? I didn't even know she could laugh!" Kiri yelled down, and you laughed harder.
"Did you not think I was capable of laughing Kiri?"
"I was wondering yes- wait are you looking at me like that? Wait stop!-" Kiri started, before noticing your mischievous grin.
Playfully you lunged at her, jabbing at her ribs causing her to laugh uncontrollably as she tried to push you off. But forgetting you were in a tree, the two of you quickly fell down, luckily there wasn't too far to fall.
In a spilt second decision, Kiri remembered that your ribs were still healing, so she flipped the two of you over midfall so she landed on the ground first.
The two of you laughed breathlessly as Tuk and Lo'ak looked down at you both with bemusement.
"Stacks on!!" Tuk yelled, leaping on top of the two of you with a squeal.
Kiri and you shrieked as she sprawled on top of the two of you, while Lo'ak laughed so hard he doubled down.
The three of you were still all tangled together when Neteyam and Spider wandered towards the two of you, both already laughing.
"Tuk! Get off! You are heavy!" You attempted to push her off but she pushed you back.
"She's heavy? I have both of you on me!" Kiri scoffed from underneath both of you.
"Oh relax, we are both smaller than you." You reply before mischievously grabbing Tuk and pressing your combined weight harder on top of her, invoking breathless squeals from the both of them.
"Skxawngs!! Help me before I meet Eywa!" Kiri yelled out to the three boys watching with ranging laughter. Though her tone was not at all angry.
Neteyam, being the gracious big brother he was, though he was still laughing, reached out and grabbed Kiri's arm. He gently pulled her away from underneath you and Tuk, causing you both to fall ungraciously.
"Ow!" You grunted in retaliation dramatically, before Tuk launched herself at you into a tackle.
You however were ready for it and allowed her to roughhouse you.
"No! I yield! I yield! I do not have the size advantage I usually do! You are too strong for me!" You playfully pushed her, enough to be rough but not enough to hurt as she giggled and yelped.
The force of your tackling caused the two of you to roll rapidly towards the shallow part of the lake.
"Wait, not the la-" You realised midroll before the two of you tumbled in with equal shrieks.
When you resurfaced along with Tuk, all you could hear was the sounds of laughter from your gracious forest saviours.
You shook yourself, a look of disgust lingering on your face as the water clinged to you.
"This water is far too warm as I expected." You grumbled, trying to wipe it off with no avail.
"I thought you were meant to be a warrior!" Lo'ak called out from the shore, his tone was completely playful though Kiri still hit his shoulder.
You glared at him, before walking out of the lake suddenly with determination.
"Bro wait, I didn't mean-" He stuttered as you stalked towards him, but instead of fighting him like he expected, you simply grabbed his tail roughly and became dragging him towards the river.
"Hey! Ow! Let me g-" Lo'ak yelped, before you pushed him in the water with a hardy chuckle.
"Get him Tuk! Go!" You yelled as the young girl lunged at her brother, effectively pulling him down.
"Cuz, help! Defend my honour!" Lo'ak yelled dramatically as he let Tuk drag him down.
You turned before quickly jumping back into the water with a surprisingly freeing squeal as both Spider and Kiri teamed up on you, all of your grinning.
Neteyam just chuckled at everyone before making his way in to assist Tuk with taking down Lo'ak.
Kiri resurfaced after a near dodge from Spider, their alliance broken, as it became a free for all. She giggled at you and Spider roughhousing, before taking a brief moment to acknowledge that the forest was no longer tense, that Eywa was no longer holding her breath. Kiri smiled at this, though her peace didn't last long as Spider and your's fighting almost banged into her and she quickly moved away.
Kiri giggled again, briefly noticing the stray look Neteyam gave you though you were too busy trying to win the increasingly competitive fight with Spider.
Before she could ponder this though, she felt the air grow cold, and her kuru tingle.
She looked up, and as if waiting her to notice, a RDA airship flew above, buzzing sound echoing through the woods.
Everyone's laugh immediately faded, and Spider and you separated almost instantly.
Luckily for them, it didn't seem to notice the Na'vi and human adoselences in the water, flying overhead as if they weren't there.
When the air stopped humming, everyone remembered to breathe again.
"We should leave, or get out of the open." Neteyam spoke up, his big brother instincts kicking in as he became to herd them all out of the water.
Kiri turned to you instantly, noticing how you were still frozen staring at the air.
She gently placed a hand on your shoulder, and you flinched as if she had struck you.
You let her guide you into the woods, as the rest of the Sully children hurried into them.
"Are you alright?" Neteyam asked you, noticing your stiff demeanour. He reached a hand out instinctively but dropped it as soon as you spoke.
"That was what attacked me that day." You muttered absent-mindedly, brow furrowed in thought.
Neteyam's gaze hardened, anger seeping into his face but he squashed speaking on it again when the sound of the RDA helicopter came back.
The Sully kids instantly all huddled together, with you and Tuk closest to the middle.
You were about to whisper offendedly about this when an echoing boom and explosion almost toppled everyone to the ground.
You covered your ears on instinct, not used to such loud noises up close.
"Go, go, go!" Neteyam yelled over the lingering ringing in the air.
You felt an hand grab you and pull you along, in your distortion you couldn't tell who it was, but you forced your legs to run with them.
Different calls for ikrans erupted in the air, as luckily they all quickly came.
Your eyes refocused finally, and it was revealed that Neteyam was the one holding your arm.
Kiri and him cast a glance at each other, communicating silently, before Neteyam pulled you up with him on his ikran, apologising under his breath for being so rough.
There was no time to feel conflicted about this, survival was the only thing on your mind and you were always stated to be hard to kill.
