comfort in the heart of the palm

Cracking open an eye, Eris watches as your face is clouded in a shade of grey, the raindrops raining down the side of your face in steady streams, though you remain dry. Such is a rare stormy day in the Autumn Court, one that Eris knew always made you think a little deeper and sink a little into that depth you’ve worked so hard to pull yourself from. He would know, because he’s woken up from the steady pressure of melancholia down the bond, the sadness you feel creating a similar twinge in his chest. He watches your glassy eyes become more vacant, the twinge from the bond now cutting deeper into his chest. You’re too far in now, and he know it’s time to pull you out. Reaching out a hand to you, you jolt when you feel his warm hand against your cold skin, but you quickly relax when you recognise that steady and familiar touch, and Eris nearly purred at the comfort that now sipped down that bond. Clasping his hand in yours, you turn to your side to face Eris now, as you continue to hold his hand against your cheek with your own. Eris wills his warmth into a steady thrum, slowly warming you up as his thumb strokes your cheek. Even with a soft smile now gracing your face as you stare at your lovely mate, Eris still had to ask, just to be sure.

‘Tell me what’s haunting you.’ You let your eyelids flutter shut for a brief moment before you lift your eyes to meet his gaze again, willing your entire being to be steady before you replied him. ‘Don’t worry about me. I’m fine.’ Eris has heard this story too often, comforted you too often. You didn’t want to let your own demons haunt him too, didn’t want him to take your pain and burden as his own to bear. Tonight, and slowly from here on, you’ll learn to deal with those inner demons yourself, even though you know Eris will be there with open arms — always. ‘Talk to me, my sweet. I’m here, you don’t have to be afraid of anything.’ You shake your head more firmly this time, squeezing his fingers that were laid upon your cheek gently. You insist. ‘I’m really fine, love. Don’t worry about me.’ You press a quick kiss to the heart of his palm before scooting closer to him and tucking yourself under his chin, if only to shut him up. Eris relents, hand going around your waist to settle you flush against him, his fingers smoothing through your hair, his warm breaths steady against the crown of your head. Still, you feel the tension in his body, feel it down the bond, and you know he won’t settle until you reassure him again. Lifting a hand up, you tug his chin down, forcing him to look at you. Worry still lined his eyes, and willing as much life into your eyes as you can, you whisper, ‘Sometimes it’s still hard. But I know that it’ll get better if I have you by my side.’ You tug on the bond between you a little, making sure that comfort seeps down that bond towards him. At that tug, Eris tries to give a little smile — for you. He understood every bit of what you meant, even without that fancy courtier words lacing it. / Some days my demons still haunt me. But I have absolute faith that I’ll be able to survive and someday live, because your presence in my life helps me get through it. / When a warm glow of understanding comes flowing back to you down that bond, you tug his chin lower as you lift yours higher, making your lips meet. You press a soft, loving kiss to his lips, allowing them to linger against his for a heartbeat, before you resume your previous position; your favourite actually: tucked safely under his chin and in his arms. When he feels the bond gradually fade into quietness, Eris presses a kiss to your forehead, his next words a whisper, a promise with only the stars to bear witness. ‘And even on the rough days when your demons haunt you, I promise to make it better. And to love you the same — always’

sometimes i forget how reading is just. marvelous. just an absolutely fucking endlessly joyful activity. i’ll go about my life and not read one single book for months and be like why am i morose! why am i so apathetic! what is missing here!!!! and try to look for whatever it is that is lacking and never find it anywhere and i get so tired and sad and angry, and then i’m finally like i’m gonna stop everything for a couple days and read a really good book bc i don’t care about anything else. and suddenly i get motivated to work bc i know i’ll read when i’m on break. i get more creative. i want to watercolor again and bust out the shameful fabric stash with all my unfinished sewing projects. god even my dreams get more vivid!! what the fuck! and i’m like here is the magic i was looking for, why did i ever think i was going to find it anywhere else. it was always here!!!
