“You lasted eight seconds on that bull...and I’m wondering if you can last longer.”
“Longer on the bull?” you ask carefully.
His smile is wicked. “Sure. Let’s start with that.”
synopsis: you think conquering a bull looks easy, so rodeo champion sylus decides you need a lesson in riding—in the backseat of his pickup truck.

The rodeo smells like dirt and beer and bad decisions.
You’re wedged between Tara and some guy in an absurdly oversized cowboy hat who keeps whooping like he’s personally invested in watching men get concussed by livestock. The stands are packed, the sun is setting, and you are profoundly, deeply bored.
“Isn’t this AMAZING?” Tara shouts over the announcer’s voice.
“It’s definitely something,” you say, taking another sip of overpriced beer.
“Come on! Live a little!” Tara hits your arm playfully. “You said you wanted adventure, didn’t you?”
What you actually said three days ago was that you needed a weekend away from your suffocating corporate job and your mother’s passive-aggressive texts about your biological clock. Tara—your chaotic, impulsive, rodeo-obsessed friend and coworker—interpreted that as “drive three hours into the middle of nowhere to watch men cosplay as cowboys.”
“I said I wanted a spa weekend. With wine. And no animals.”
“This is way better than a spa!”
“Tara, I’m watching a man get thrown off of a bull into a literal pile of shit.”
“That’s the best part!”
You’re starting to regret every choice you made that led you here, mentally drafting escape strategies: sudden vague illness, a family emergency of unclear nature, alien abduction—
“Next up,” the announcer booms, “give it up for Sylus Qin, folks! Undefeated this season, riding Wild Cherry—”
The crowd absolutely loses their minds. Apparently this guy is famous. Or infamous. It’s hard to tell.
Tara is suddenly sitting up straighter. “Oh my god, it’s him.”
“Him who?”
“SYLUS. The Sylus Qin. He’s only the best bull rider in the circuit right now. Undefeated. Gorgeous. Thighs that could crush your skull and you’d say thank you.” She’s practically vibrating. “This is why we came.”
“We came all the way out here for one specific cowboy?”
“We came for THE cowboy.” She looks at you like you have brain damage. “He has entire fan accounts dedicated to him, y’know. Sychos, we call ourselves. Get it, like psych—”
“Yeah, I got it,” you cut in. “Naming yourselves after men who sit on angry animals for prize money. Very adult behavior.”
“Adult behavior is overrated.” Tara waves you off. “And just you wait, babe. You’ll be calling yourself one by the end of the night.”
You snort. “If that happens, I give you permission to euthanize me.”
“Fine, but I get your closet.” She bumps your hip with hers. “I’d grieve, obviously. But in designer.”
A group of girls in tight denim shorts and matching red bandanas suddenly flock to the rail below you, phones out, glitter letters spelling STAY ON, SYLUS across posterboard. One of them whispers something to the girl beside her that makes her giggle and bite her lip.
“Those are the Sychos, huh?” you say, like you’re confirming a wildlife sighting. “You count yourself among the faithful?”
“Please. Me? I’m not here to worship him.” She tips her chin toward the girls, sliding her sunglasses into her hair. “I’m here for his disciples.”
You shoot her a look. To Tara, men sit in the same category as traffic cones—loud and in the way, only tolerable when directing her somewhere else.
“You’re unbelievable.”
“Unbelievably efficient, you mean.” She tosses her braid over her shoulder and checks her lipstick in the reflection of her phone screen. “They convert easily.”
Before you can respond, the PA system crackles in a sharp burst of static that jolts the arena to attention. Everyone shifts at once, boots scraping against metal as the crowd angles to catch a glimpse of the rider. Someone whistles. Dust stirs around the chute like it’s coming alive.
The girls below you erupt first, phones snapping up, posterboards rattling against the rail.
The announcer’s voice rolls through the speakers—a slow country drawl that buzzes through the bleachers, through your ribs, through the stupid can of beer in your hand:
“Competitor twenty-two…Sylus Qin.”
Tara exhales like she’s been waiting hours for this exact moment. “Showtime.”
“—ain’t nobody lasted more than six seconds on this beast all year—”
“That’s what she said,” you mutter into your drink.
Tara doesn’t hear you. She’s too busy screaming with the rest of the crowd as the gate slams open.
The bull explodes into the ring—twisting, bucking, trying to murder its rider with pure muscle and chaos. The man on top is already locked in, one hand high, the other on the rope, body rolling with each violent buck like he’s done this a thousand times. Because he probably has.
You’ll admit—objectively, technically, it’s impressive. In the same way watching someone juggle chainsaws is impressive. Impressive and dangerous and stupid.
He doesn’t flinch. Doesn’t wobble. Doesn’t even seem winded. Just rides the beast like it was born to be beneath him.
Six seconds. Seven. Eight.
The buzzer sounds. He dismounts smoothly, landing on his feet while the bull handlers rush in. The girls below you are shrieking like someone won the lottery.
You finish off your beer.
“...That’s it?” you mutter.
“That’s it?” Tara whips her head toward you so fast her sunglasses nearly fly. “He just survived a demon with horns and you’re bored?”
“Looked like…balance,” you say with a shrug. “Core strength. Decent stance.”
Tara opens her mouth, ready to annihilate you, but the crowd erupts again as the rider approaches the bleachers—a frenzy of camera flashes, dads slapping shoulders, girls crying.
You glance up just in time to see him.
Sylus Qin. Helmet off, silver hair tousled, sweat darkening the collar of his shirt. A handler says something to him, but he barely responds. His red eyes scan the bleachers, not searching the crowd—hunting through it.
And then they find you.
Not the screaming girls pressed against the rail. Not the sign glittering under the fluorescent floodlights.
You.
His gaze flicks over you once, slow, like he’s taking note of every inch. He doesn’t smile, doesn’t wave, just assesses you in a way that makes your pulse jump.
Tara gasps like she’s witnessing a miracle. “Oh my god,” she hisses, shaking your arm. “He’s looking at you!”
“He’s looking in this general direction,” you correct, throat suddenly dry.
“General direction, my ass.” Tara’s voice is wild with victory. “He’s staring at you like you just spit in his drink. And he liked it.”
You’re about to argue when Sylus drags the back of his glove across his mouth—still looking up at you, the stranger with crossed arms and a steady, blank stare. His eyes narrow, heat flicking to life behind them. Interest. Curiosity. Challenge.
You tilt your head, like you’re still trying to figure out what the fuss is about.
The gesture lands like an insult.
He holds your gaze for a beat too long, tips his hat directly at you with what can only be described as spite, and saunters out of the arena.
Tara explodes beside you the second he disappears through the gate.
“WHAT WAS THAT?” Tara is practically screaming in your ear. “What just happened? Did you see that? He looked at you like—like—”
“Like nothing.”
“Like EVERYTHING.” She grabs your face, turning it toward hers. “Do you understand what just happened? Sylus Qin just acknowledged you. Personally. In front of everyone.”
“He probably does that for lots of people—”
“He doesn’t.” A girl in front of you turns around, and she looks furious. “He literally never does that.”
She’s wearing a crop top with “Qin” bedazzled across the chest and more makeup than seems practical for an outdoor event. Her friends beside her look equally angry.
“Excuse me?” you say.
“You heard me.” She looks you up and down with obvious disdain. “We’ve been coming to his rides for months. Months. And you—you didn’t even cheer! You just sat there like you were bored!”
“I mean...I was?”
Tara makes a sound like she's trying not to laugh.
“This is bullshit.” Bedazzled stands up, and her whole group follows. “Come on. We’re going to the back. Maybe if we’re there when he comes out—”
They file out of the row, shooting you looks that range from annoyed to homicidal.
The moment they’re gone, Tara turns to you with the biggest grin you’ve ever seen.
“Oh my god.”
“Don’t.”
“You made enemies in under eight seconds. I’m so proud.” She’s bouncing on her heels now. “Did you see their faces? They looked like you personally victimized them.”
“I didn’t do anything—”
“You existed while looking unimpressed. Apparently that’s a crime here.” She glances toward where the group disappeared, then back at you with a gleam in her eye. “God, they’re going to be so upset when they find out he—”
“When they find out he what? Looked at me for two seconds?”
“That man tipped his hat at you like a declaration of war. That’s not nothing.” Tara is still grinning. “Anyway, I need to pee. Come with?”
“Yeah, sure.”
You both head toward the bathrooms, navigating through the crowd. The line is mercifully short.
“I’m calling it now,” Tara says as you wait. “Something’s going to happen.”
“Nothing is going to happen. He probably tips his hat at people all the time.”
“Sure, babe. Keep telling yourself that.”
You roll your eyes and head into a stall. When you come out to wash your hands, Tara is leaning against the sink, scrolling her phone.
“You go ahead,” you tell her. “I’ll meet you back at the seats.”
“You sure?”
“Yeah, I’m going to fix my hair. I look like I’ve been at a rodeo.”
“You have been at a rodeo,” she confirms, already heading out. “Don’t take too long! Next round starts in ten!”
You’re willing your last few flyaways into place when your phone buzzes in your back pocket.
Unknown Number: Tell me.
Unknown Number: Did I disappoint you, or are you always like that?
Your stomach drops.
You: who is this?
Unknown Number: Take a wild guess, sweetie.
Unknown Number: Here’s a hint: silver hair, red eyes, just gave the performance of the night to the most unimpressed audience member in rodeo history.
Fuck.
You: how did you get my number?
Sylus: Your friend. The enthusiastic one in the seat next to you.
Sylus: I asked one of the staff to track down “the girl in section B who looked like she’d rather be getting a root canal.” She was very helpful.
You’re going to murder Tara.
You: that’s borderline stalking
Sylus: It’s resourceful.
Sylus: Also, your friend gave me your number with the promise that I would “show you a good time.” Her words, not mine.
Sylus: Though I’m not opposed to the prospect.
You: you’re insane
Sylus: You’re texting back awfully quickly for someone who thinks I’m insane.
Sylus: So. What’s your damage?
You: excuse me?
Sylus: I just rode 2000 pounds of rage that hospitalized four people this season. People are losing their minds. There are women in this crowd who would commit felonies for my autograph.
Sylus: And you looked like you were waiting for a bus.
Sylus: I need to know what your problem is.
The audacity of this man…
You: maybe i’m just not impressed by men showing off
Sylus: Showing off implies I did it for attention. I did it because it’s my job and I’m good at it.
You: i don’t cheer for men who do their jobs. sets a bad precedent
Sylus: You’re cruel.
Sylus: I like you.
Sylus: Gate 7. Twenty minutes.
You stare at your phone. This cannot be happening.
You: why would i do that?
Sylus: Because you’re curious. Because I’m curious. Because you clearly have opinions about my performance that you’re dying to share.
Sylus: Or are you scared?
You: of what? you?
Sylus: Of admitting I was more impressive than you’re letting on.
You: you’re delusional
Sylus: Gate 7. Twenty minutes. Prove me wrong.
You should block this number. Should go back to Tara. Should absolutely not go to Gate 7.
You: ...i’ll think about it
Sylus: Clock’s ticking, sweetie. Gate 7. Don’t make me come find you.
You pocket your phone and find your seat beside Tara in the stands, heart racing.
“Your cowboy texted me,” you inform her flatly.
“HE DID?!”
You wave your phone in her face as evidence.
“When were you planning on telling me you gave out my phone number to the man who looked ready to challenge me to a duel?!”
“He was asking around for it! What was I supposed to do, say no?” She looks absolutely delighted with herself. “Shit, what did he say? Is he asking you out? Please tell me he’s asking you out.”
“He wants me to meet him at Gate 7.”
Tara screams. Actually screams as she rips your phone out of your hand. Several people turn to look.
“YOU HAVE TO GO.” She’s reading the messages, scrolling rapidly. “He’s obsessed. He’s one hundred percent obsessed with you.”
“He’s not—”
“‘Don’t make me come find you’?” She looks at you with her jaw dropped. “That’s obsessed behavior. When are you going?”
“I’m not going—”
“You ARE going. This is Sylus Qin. Do you understand how many people would kill for this opportunity?” She’s already pointing you to the aisle. “Those girls down there are going to lose their minds. This is the best night of my life.”
“You’re a little too excited about this.”
“Are you kidding? You’re about to go meet the hottest bull rider in the circuit, and his entire fan club is going to implode when they find out. This is peak hurt-comfort material.” She pauses, eyes lighting up with realization. “I’m gonna try to console them afterward. The blonde one is kind of cute when she’s angry.”
“Tara.”
“What? You get the hot cowboy, I get to make the heartbroken rodeo girls feel better. Everybody wins.” She grins. “Especially me.”
You roll your eyes. She physically shoves you toward the exit.
“Now go. Before he changes his mind.” Tara looks down toward the rail where Bedazzled and her friends are still trying to get Sylus’s attention. “I’m going to go offer emotional support. Wish me luck.”
You’re going to strangle her. After you maybe, possibly go to Gate 7.
Just to tell off the cowboy.
Obviously.
—
Gate 7 leads to a restricted area—trailers, practice equipment, and cowboys in various states of undress. You’re about to turn back when you see Sylus.
He’s leaning against a fence, hat tilted back, stripped down to a white t-shirt that clings to his muscled frame in ways that should be illegal. There’s dirt on his jeans, and a dark bruise blooming on his pale forearm that he doesn’t seem the least bit bothered by.
He’s taller up close. Broader. And those eyes are definitely, unnaturally red.
“You came.” He sounds genuinely pleased.
You nod, keeping a careful distance. “You’re very pushy for a stranger.”
“Sylus.” He pushes off the fence, extending a hand toward you. “Now I’m not a stranger.”
You take his hand, large and calloused and scarred along the knuckles. His grip is warm and firm, and he holds on just a second longer than necessary.
“And you are?”
You tell him your name, and he repeats it slowly, like he’s testing how it feels.
“Pretty. Doesn’t match the attitude, though.”
Your eyes narrow immediately. “What’s that supposed to mean?”
“You looked miserable up there. Bored. Like you were mentally filing your taxes.” He tilts his head, studying you. “City girl?”
“Is it that obvious?”
“Sweetie, everything about you screams ‘I don’t belong here.’” His eyes drag over you slowly—your designer boots, your expensive jeans, the way you’re standing like you’re afraid of getting dirty. “Your boots cost more than most people make in a month. You’re holding yourself like someone might brush against you the wrong way. And you’ve got that look.”
“What look?”
“The one people get when they’re critiquing something they’ve never done themselves.”
“I don’t need to ride a bull to recognize—”
“Recognize what?” He’s close enough now that you have to tilt your head back to maintain eye contact. “Go on. Tell me, princess. What did I do wrong?”
Princess.
He says it like he’s daring you to get offended. You want to hate it. But your pulse clearly didn’t get the memo.
“Second buck,” you say before you can stop yourself. “You held center. But you should’ve leaned into it.”
His eyebrows raise slightly. “Should I?”
“The bull was digging left. You stayed neutral. If you’d shifted your weight—”
“Show me.”
You blink. “What?”
“Show me.” He gestures to the fence rail beside him. “Up. Show me what I should’ve done.”
“I’m not getting on a fence—”
“Ah.” He crosses his arms, stance relaxed like he’s already won. “All that mouth was just for show. My mistake.”
Your jaw tightens. You step forward and grab the top rail.
His hand closes around your wrist before you’ve even set your weight.
“You’ll slip like that.” He adjusts your grip, thumb dragging across your palm. “Fingers here. Wrist locked. Unless you want to fall.”
“I wasn’t going to fall—”
“Show me, then.” He steps back, waiting.
You haul yourself up onto the rail, boots wedging between the crossbars, steadying your weight to keep your balance. You settle there, stable, and you know you’ve done it well because he pauses in that particular way men do when they realize you’re more capable than they assumed.
He moves closer slowly, until he’s standing right there, palm coming to rest lightly on your ankle.
“Your eyes weren’t on the rider,” he says.
“They were on the bull," you tell him. “The rider’s posture only matters relative to momentum. The animal is the variable. You were just—compensating.”
His thumb shifts against your ankle bone, pressure increasing the slightest fraction.
“Compensating for a thousand pounds of rage isn't ‘just’ anything.”
You meet his eyes. “It is when you’re supposed to be good at it.”
He doesn’t smile. He steps between your legs, looking up at you with that unreadable expression.
“Show me,” he says, unhurried. “Show me where you think I should’ve shifted.”
You swallow. “I’m not a professional—”
“That didn’t stop you from having an opinion, did it?” He tilts his head. “You’ve been judging me since I got off that bull. So judge. Show me what I did wrong.”
You lift your hand, pointing to where you’d seen the bull dig in. “Second buck. Right there. If you’d leaned into it instead of holding straight—”
His hand comes to your knee. Not grabbing, just setting the angle. “Like this?”
Your breath catches.
His other hand settles light on your hip—the kind of touch that’s functional, yet makes your skin burn through your jeans.
“Or here,” he asks, voice dropping lower, “if you want to keep your spine neutral?”
The air shifts between you.
“You’re—” You have to clear your throat. “You’re mocking me.”
“I’m learning.” His thumb brushes a slow circle against your knee. “You sat above me for eight seconds looking unimpressed. Now you’re above me again.” His eyes hold yours. “So teach me. What should I have done differently?”
It’s not about the bull anymore. You both know it.
“You should’ve—” Your voice is unsteady. “Weight forward. Hips angled—”
“Show me.” His hands are still on you, patient and sure. “Don’t tell me. Show me where.”
You shift your hips forward slightly to demonstrate and his grip tightens, subtle yet unmistakable.
“Like that?” His words are rougher now. “That’s what you wanted to see?”
“Yes.”
“Interesting.” He steps back finally, hands dropping away, and you hate that you immediately miss the contact. “Get down.”
“What—”
“Get off the rail. I’m going to teach you something.”
“I don’t need—”
“Yes, you do.” He’s already walking toward the practice area. “You know the theory. Now let’s see if you can execute. Come on, city girl. Time to back up all that criticism.”
You should refuse. Should go back to the stands. Instead, you climb down from the fence and follow him.
Because he’s right. You’ve been judging from a distance. And something about the challenge in his voice makes you want to prove him wrong.
Or maybe prove him right.
You’re not sure which would be more satisfying.
—
The mechanical bull sits in the empty practice area like a challenge.
“Absolutely not.”
“You just spent ten minutes telling me what I did wrong.” Sylus is already at the control panel, adjusting settings with casual confidence. “Now you get to prove you understand what you’re talking about.”
“I don’t need to ride it to understand—”
“Talk is easy. Execution’s different.” He doesn’t look up. “You can critique all you want, but until you feel it, you don’t actually know anything.”
The dismissiveness in his tone makes you tense. “Fine. Start it up.”
“Not yet.” Now he looks at you. “Get on first.”
You approach the bull, eyeing it skeptically. It’s wider than it looked from a distance.
“Problem?”
“No.”
“Then stop stalling.”
You grab the rail and try to pull yourself up. Your boots slip on the metal and you barely catch yourself.
“Easy, princess.” He’s beside you instantly, hands on your waist. “Step on the platform. I’ll lift.”
“I can do it myself—”
“I know you can.” His grip is firm. “But this is faster. Up.”
He lifts you like you weigh nothing, and suddenly you're straddling the barrel, thighs spread wide, hands scrambling for the rope.
“Don’t.” His voice stops you cold. “Hands off.”
“Then how—”
“You were very confident about hip positioning a minute ago.” He walks around you slowly, assessing your form. “So use your hips. Thighs tight. Core engaged. That’s all you need.”
“That’s not—”
“It is.” He stops in front of you. “You’re trying to hold on because you don’t trust your body. But I watched you on that fence. You’ve got the strength. You just don’t know how to use it yet.”
His hand slides up your outer thigh—not suggestive, testing muscle tension. Your body doesn’t seem to know the difference.
“Squeeze.”
You do, and his hand presses back, checking your stance.
“Harder. You’re holding back.” His thumb digs into your quad. “I can feel it. You’re stronger than this. Show me.”
You squeeze harder, and he makes an approving sound.
“There. That’s what I want to feel.” His hand stays on your thigh, warm and grounding. “When this starts moving, that tension doesn’t drop. Understand?”
“Yes.”
“We’ll see.” He moves behind you, his hands settling on your hips. “Lean forward. Hips first.”
He guides your position—forward, tilted, adjusted until you’re perched in a way that feels both vulnerable and powerful.
“This feel unstable?” he asks.
“Yes.”
“Good. It should.” His hands don’t leave your hips. “That instability is what you work with, not against. The bull moves, you move. Simple.”
“Nothing about this is simple—”
“It is when you stop overthinking.” His breath is warm against your ear now. “I’m starting it slow. Just feel it. Don’t try to predict or control. Just respond.”
The bull lurches to life.
Your instinct is to grab, to tense, to fight it.
“Breathe.” His voice cuts through your panic. “Hips loose. Let them move.”
You try to focus on your hips, on moving with the gentle rocking.
“Better. But you’re still thinking too much.” The bull bucks slightly harder, and you gasp. “Stop planning your next move. There is no next move. There’s only now.”
“That’s not helpful—”
"No?" He kills the power suddenly. “You want helpful?”
Before you can process, he’s swinging up behind you.
The barrel was already small. With him on it, there’s no space left. His chest is solid against your back, his thighs bracketing yours, his presence overwhelming every sense.
“What are you—”
“Teaching you the difference between knowing and understanding,” he says, like it’s obvious. Like this was inevitable. “You can tell me what I should’ve done. Now I’m going to show you why it works.”
His hands settle on your hips again—firmer this time, fingers splayed wide.
“This is your center.” His fingers press into your hip bones. “Everything starts here. When I move, you’ll feel it here first. Pay attention.”
You can’t do anything besides pay attention. Can’t think about anything except the heat of him, the firm weight pressed against you, the way his voice seems to resonate through your entire body.
“Ready?”
You nod because words are impossible.
The bull starts again, and this time it’s completely different. You feel how his body moves—the subtle shift of his hips, the roll of his spine, the way he absorbs each movement and redirects it. His hands guide you through it, showing you without words how to respond.
“Feel that?” His voice is low against your ear. “That’s what you were trying to describe. The lean, the shift, the weight distribution. It’s not about thinking. It's about feeling.”
His hips roll against yours, demonstrating, and your brain short-circuits.
“Breathe.” His hand spreads across your lower stomach, steadying you. “You’re holding your breath. Don’t. Breathe with the movement.”
You try to breathe, but it’s difficult when you’re this aware of every point of contact.
“Now you.” His hands loosen slightly. “Match my rhythm. Show me you understand.”
You focus on his movement, on the way his body guides yours, and you start to match it. Your hips roll with his, following his lead, and suddenly the movement makes sense.
“There she is.” The satisfaction in his voice goes straight to your core. “Knew you could do it. You just needed to stop thinking you knew better than your body.”
The bull bucks harder and you move with it, your hips rolling, your thighs squeezing, and his hands tighten on you.
“Atta girl.” The words come out rougher. “That’s exactly right. Keep it up.”
You do, and you feel the moment something shifts—the moment it clicks, the moment you stop fighting and start responding.
“You feel that, sweetie?” His voice is strained now. “That’s what eight seconds feels like. That’s what I feel when I ride.”
“Sylus—”
“I know.” His hands slide to your waist, holding you steady as the bull spins. “You’re feeling it now.”
The intimacy of the statement, combined with the movement, the heat, the way his body fits against yours—it’s overwhelming.
“This is—”
“Intense.” He finishes for you. “That’s the point. That's what you were watching from the stands and didn’t understand. The rush. The focus. The way everything else disappears and it’s just you and the movement and eight seconds of pure instinct.”
The bull bucks hard and you gasp, but his grip keeps you stable.
“I’ve got you, princess. You’re not falling. Just stay with me.”
And you do. You stay with him through every twist and buck, your body learning the rhythm, responding to his guidance, until you're not sure where your movement ends and his begins.
When he finally kills the power, you’re both breathing heavily.
“You got it. Eight seconds,” he announces after glancing at his watch. “Not bad for someone who’d never done it before.”
“You were helping—”
“I was teaching. You were learning.” His hands are still on your waist, and he hasn’t moved away. “Big difference. That was all you at the end.”
You’re painfully aware that you don’t want him to let go.
“So.” His thumbs stroke once across your sides. “Still think a city girl knows better than a cowboy?”
Your mouth is dry. “Maybe we’re even.”
His laugh is low and pleased. “Maybe.” He dismounts finally, fluid and controlled, then reaches up for you. “Come here.”
He lifts you down and your legs immediately betray you, shaking and unstable.
His arm wraps around your waist before you can fall. “Easy. Adrenaline drop. Give it a minute.”
“I’m fine—”
“You’re not.” His hand finds your pulse at your neck, pressing lightly. “Heart rate’s still elevated. You’re shaking. When’s the last time you ate?”
“Lunch. Around noon, I think.”
“Hours ago.” He’s already pulling out his phone. “You need food. There’s a diner close by. Best pie in the state.”
“I don’t need you to feed me—”
“Maybe not. But I’m doing it anyway.” He pockets his phone, arm still around your waist. “You just burned through all your energy, and I’m not letting you back out there until I know you’re steady. So. Diner. My treat.”
“This feels like a scheme to keep me around longer.”
“Is it working?” He holds you tighter against him, almost automatically—like his body recognized you before his mind caught up. “Because if it is, I’ve got a whole list of other places I could take you. Hardware store. Feed supply. This town is full of exciting places I could take my time with you.”
Something in the way he says it sends heat down your spine.
“You’re not subtle, you know.”
“Never claimed to be, sweetie.”
Before you can respond, your phone vibrates.
Tara: where ARE u???
Tara: DID SYLUS THE STALLION KIDNAP U???
Tara: if u are in danger pls respond
Tara: if u are having a good time ignore this
You swipe the notifications away.
Sylus watches your thumb move, red eyes half-lidded with amusement. “Emergency?”
“No. Not yet, anyway.” You slide the phone into your pocket. “But if you murder me, my friend knows your name. And your face.”
His laugh echoes across the arena. “Noted.”
You try to step out of his hold, but your legs have other ideas—immediately crumpling under you like two pieces of wet spaghetti.
Before you can hit the dirt, his hand flashes out, hooking a finger through your belt loop and yanking you back against him.
“Careful, city girl. Told you. Adrenaline crash.”
He doesn’t give you a chance to argue, just scoops you up with one arm and settles you against his side.
“Sylus, I can walk—”
“Clearly not,” he counters, but he’s grinning as he starts toward the parking lot, carrying you with ease. “Stop squirming. You’re only making this harder on yourself.”
You’re acutely aware of several things at once: his arm banded around you, the heat of him, the way his shoulder is right there. And—
Oh god.
The group of girls from earlier. Bedazzled and her friends—minus the blonde. All staring as Sylus walks right past them, carrying you like it’s the most natural thing in the world. He doesn’t even glance their way, completely oblivious. But they notice. Oh, they notice. If the looks they shot you were bullets, you'd already be bleeding out on the dirt.
You bury your face against his shoulder, trying to make yourself smaller.
“Cold, sweetie?” His voice rumbles through his chest.
“No,” you mutter into his shirt. “I’m trying not to get shanked.”
He pauses mid-step. “What?”
“Your fan club. They look like they want to murder me.”
He glances back, finally noticing the group of glaring fans, and laughs like you told him a bad joke.
“Oh, them.” He adjusts his grip on you, hauling you higher. In one smooth motion, he tosses you over his shoulder.
You shriek. “What are you doing?! Put me down!”
He dips you, slow, like he’s genuinely about to release you. “If you insist."
Your legs are dangling, the Sychos are staring, and you’re suddenly very aware of the distance between your boots and the ground.
“No—no, I don’t insist—!” You clutch at his shirt, holding onto him for dear life. “Don’t you dare put me down—”
“Thought so.” He straightens, one arm locking securely against you as he keeps walking. “See? Now they can’t reach you. Problem solved.”
“Sylus!”
“You’re the one who said they looked dangerous. I’m just being practical.” His hand settles firmly on the back of your thigh, patting it gently. “Now stop wiggling before you fall.”
“I’m going to fall because you just—you can’t just throw people over your shoulder—”
“Just did.” He heads straight for a massive black pickup, tall enough you’d need a running start to climb in. He pops the door open with one hand and deposits you in the passenger seat. “And you’re still in one piece. I’d say it all worked out.”
Your hands are still fisted in his shirt, arms locked around his shoulders. He notices immediately.
“You can let go now, sweetie,” he says, amused.
Your brain registers that you’re sitting. That you’re safe. That there’s no reason to still be holding on.
Your hands don’t get the message.
“I—” You look down at where your fingers are twisted in his shirt. “My hands aren't listening.”
“I can see that.” He’s trying not to smile. “You need a minute?”
“Shut up.” You force your fingers to uncurl, releasing him. You sink into the leather, groaning into your hands. “My dignity is destroyed.”
“Your dignity was already questionable after that bull ride.” He leans against the doorframe, eyes glinting with mischief. “Besides, it could've been worse.”
“How could that have possibly been worse?”
“I could’ve set you down and let them watch you try to stand on your own.” He’s smirking now. “Would’ve made my point even clearer.”
Your cheeks burn at the implication. “You’re impossible.”
“You keep saying that.” He closes your door and walks around to the driver’s side, sliding in with easy grace. “But you’re still here.”
“Maybe I’m waiting for the right moment to escape.”
“Good luck with that. Your legs still work about as well as a newborn calf’s.” He starts the engine, eyes flicking to you with amusement. “Give it another ten minutes. Then you can make your dramatic exit.”
“You’re enjoying this way too much.”
“I’m enjoying you. The entertainment is just a bonus.” He shifts into drive. “Seatbelt. Then you're going to tell me what possessed a city girl to spend her hard-earned money watching idiots wrestle with livestock for sport.”
—
The diner is exactly what you’d expect—vinyl booths, checkered floors, jukebox blasting something twangy, and a waitress who looks like she’s been working here since the dawn of time.
“Sylus, honey!” She’s got a thick drawl and a smile that crinkles her whole face. “Didn’t expect to see you tonight. Thought you’d be celebratin’ with the boys.”
“Had better plans, Dolores.” He gestures to you.
“Well, ain’t that somethin’.” Her eyebrows shoot up, looking between you both with obvious interest. “The usual for you, sugar?”
“Please. And whatever she wants.”
You order coffee and pie because apparently that’s what you do now. Follow strange cowboys to diners and eat pie at ten PM.
“I’ll get that right out.” Dolores pats Sylus on the shoulder as she leaves, but not before giving you a very obvious once-over that feels almost approving.
“So,” Sylus says once the waitress leaves. “Eight seconds.”
“Are we really doing this?”
“We’re absolutely doing this.” He leans back in the booth, looking insufferably pleased with himself. “You lasted eight seconds on that bull. With my help, admittedly, but still. Eight seconds.”
“And?”
“And I’m wondering if you can last longer.”
The way he says it makes heat crawl up your neck.
“Longer on the bull?” you ask carefully.
His smile is wicked. “Sure. Let’s start with that.”
Dolores brings pie—massive slices that look homemade. You take a bite and it’s unfairly delicious.
“Okay,” you admit. “This is really good pie.”
“Told you. Dolores doesn’t mess around.” He takes a bite of his own, watching you. “So. What do you do? When you’re not being dragged to rodeos, that is.”
“Marketing. Corporate.” You make a sour face. “It’s as boring as it sounds.”
“Can’t be that boring if it pays for those boots.”
“The boots are the only good thing about it.” You take another bite. “What about you? Is bull riding actually lucrative, or do you just like getting thrown around for fun?”
“I don’t get thrown, sweetie. That’s the whole point,” he corrects you with a grin. “And yeah, it pays well. If you’re good at it.”
“Which you are.”
“Which I am.” There’s no false modesty to it, just fact. “Been doing it since I was seventeen. Worked my way up. Now I’m ranked second in the country.”
“Second?”
“For now. I’ll be first by the end of the season.” He says it with absolute certainty.
“Confident.”
“Realistic. I know what I’m capable of.” His eyes meet yours. “And I know what I want.”
The weight of that statement sits between you.
“And what do you want?” you ask before you can stop yourself.
“Right now? To figure out what it takes to actually impress you.” He leans forward slightly. “Because I don’t think anyone’s managed it in a while.”
You open your mouth to respond when Sylus’s phone rings. He glances at it and sighs.
“Give me a minute. I need to take this.” He slides out of the booth. “Stay put.”
You blink up at him, chin tilted just a little. “Yes, sir.”
He stops, eyebrows lifting, then gives a soft, incredulous shake of his head.
“Cute.” He’s walking backward toward the bathroom, phone angled away from his mouth, still looking at you. “But if you’re trying to draw blood, sweetie, you’re going to have to put your jaw into it.”
You’re left alone with your pie, trying very hard to pretend your heartbeat isn’t pounding in places it has no business reaching.
“Can I top off that coffee, sugar?” Dolores appears almost immediately, like she was waiting for him to leave.
“Sure. Thanks.”
She pours slowly, then glances toward the bathroom. “He’s a good one, that Sylus.”
“I just met him like, two hours ago.”
“I know.” She’s smiling. “That’s what makes this excitin'.”
“What do you mean?”
Dolores leans in conspiratorially. “Honey, I’ve been workin’ here for fifteen years. This is the spot all them rodeo fellas flock to after. I’ve seen Sylus in ‘ere dozens of times—always with the boys, always alone. Never once brought a girl here. Not one time.”
Your heart flips. “Maybe he just—”
“Trust me, them buckle bunnies try. Lord, do they try. That boy has more women throwin’ themselves at him than I have napkins in this diner.” She shakes her head. “He’s always polite about it, that sweetheart. But he never takes ‘em up on it. Too focused on riding, he always says.”
“Then why—”
“That’s what I’m wonderin’, honey.” Dolores sets the coffee pot back on the counter, wiping her hands on her apron. “But whatever you did, you got his attention. Really got it. I can tell.”
You notice his hat sitting on the seat beside you—the black cowboy hat he’d tossed there when he sat down. On impulse, you pick it up and settle it on your head. It’s too big, sliding down slightly, and you have to tilt it back to see properly.
Dolores notices and her eyes go wide. Then she grins. “Oh, honey. Do y’know what that means?”
“What?”
“Wear the hat, ride the cowboy.” She’s trying not to laugh. “That’s the rule ‘round here.”
Your face heats. “That’s not a real—”
“Realer than them nails on your hand.” She eyes your manicure with a shake of her head, still grinning. “Cowboys don’t play pretend.”
She walks away, leaving you sitting there in his hat, suddenly very aware of what you’ve just done. You consider taking it off. Handing it back when he returns. Playing it safe. But something stubborn and reckless in you keeps it on.
You take a sip of coffee, trying to look casual, when the bathroom door opens.
Sylus walks back toward the booth, phone in his hand, looking slightly annoyed. “Sponsors. Kept going on about—”
He sees you and stops dead in his tracks.
His eyes go dark—pupils blown wide, that red almost glowing in the diner lighting. His jaw tightens, and you watch his throat work as he swallows.
“What do you think you’re doing, city girl?” His voice has dropped at least half an octave.
“Drinking coffee.” You take another sip, holding his gaze, heart hammering. “Why?”
“You know why.” He slides back into the booth, but there’s tension in every line of his body now. “Take it off.”
“Why?” You rest your chin on your hand and blink up at him. “Does it not look good on me?”
He goes quiet for a moment, just looking at you. He closes his eyes and shakes his head, almost laughing. “It looks perfect on you. That’s the problem.”
“I don’t see a problem.”
“Of course you don’t, princess.” He leans back, arms spreading across the back of the booth. “You put on a man’s hat and think it’s just a fashion statement.”
“Isn’t it?”
“No.” He’s studying you now, that intense focus that makes you feel pinned in place. “It’s a claim. One I don’t think you intended to make.”
You adjust the hat on your head, tilting it back slightly so he can see your face better.
“That depends on what I’m claiming.”
His gaze traces your mouth, your throat, the line of brim shading your eyes. When his attention finally returns to yours, he drops the word between you like a coin:
“Me.”
You open your mouth, but nothing actually comes out. He smiles like he knew that would happen.
“You publicly claimed a cowboy. Impressively reckless move, by the way.” He leans back, legs stretching under the table like he’s getting comfortable. “So now I have two choices: ignore you, or teach you what you started.”
“And which are you choosing?”
“What do you think?”
Your eyes narrow. “I think you’re enjoying this too much.”
“I am. You’ve been pushing me all night. Looking unimpressed, critiquing my ride, now stealing my hat.” His eyes scan your face. “Now you’re sitting there wearing it like you’re innocent."
“Maybe I just like the style.”
“Maybe. Or maybe you wanted to see what I’d do. How I’d react. Whether I’d actually follow through.” He cocks his head. “So. How am I doing? Meeting expectations?”
Your mouth is dry. “I don’t know what you mean.”
“Yes, you do.” His voice drops lower. “You’ve been testing me since the moment I met you. Before that, even. Every word, every look.” He leans forward slightly. “This is just you pushing harder. Seeing if I’ll push back.”
“And will you?”
“Absolutely.” He doesn’t waste a breath. “Question is whether you’re ready for it.”
“I can handle it.”
His laugh is quiet. “Can you, sweetie? Because that hat says you want something specific from me. Something I’ve been holding back on all night.” His red eyes are dark now. “And once I stop holding back, I don’t do things halfway.”
The promise in his voice makes heat pool low in your stomach.
“You’re very confident.”
“I know what I'm looking at. Someone who’s been playing it safe. Someone who wants to stop overthinking.” He pauses. “Someone who put on my hat because she wanted me to do something about it.”
“That’s a lot of assumptions.”
“Then take it off.” He gestures to the hat. “Right now. Prove me wrong.”
You reply with a single shake of your head—no.
His smile is absolutely feral.
“We’re leaving.”
You blink up at him. “Maybe I’m not finished.”
He tosses way too much cash onto the table—enough to pay for the coffee, the pie, Dolores’s retirement, and the entire county fair.
“Yes, you are.” He stands, extending his hand. “Come on, city girl. Time to see if you can back up what that hat is promising."
You look at his hand. At the challenge in his eyes. At the way he’s smiling like he already knows exactly how this is going to end.
And you take it.
His palm is warm against yours as he guides you to the door. As you pass the counter, Dolores calls out: “You take good care of her now, y’hear?”
Sylus doesn’t break stride. “Oh, I intend to.”
Outside, the night air hits you, cool and dusty. Gravel crunches beneath your boots as you approach his pickup parked at the edge of the lot. He opens the passenger door, but before you can climb in, his hands are on either side of you, caging you in. One is pressed beside your head against the metal, the other settling on the open door, his body a wall of heat that’s too close to ignore.
“Last chance,” he says, like a warning. His fingers toy lazily with the hat. “You take this off, I drive you back to your hotel. Wish you good night like a gentleman.” His thumb pauses at the curve of the brim. “And the next time we see each other, we’re back to being strangers.”
It’s a terrible idea. You know it’s a terrible idea. But he’s looking at you like he’s already imagining you in his lap, and you’re looking at him like you want to see how good he is without the bull.
You reach up and adjust the hat, making sure it’s secure.
“I don’t want to be strangers.”
He doesn’t respond with words. Instead, his hands settle on your waist as he lifts you effortlessly, taking his time settling you into the passenger seat. He reaches for your seatbelt, pulling it across your body slowly. The click echoes in the quiet of the cab.
“Good,” he murmurs. “Because I couldn’t forget this—”
Only then does he lean in, forearm braced against the doorframe, his face inches from yours. He tucks a strand of hair behind your ear with an affection so unexpected you forget how to breathe. For a second, you think he might kiss you.
Instead, he flicks the spot he cleared on your forehead.
“—if I tried.”
—
Sylus doesn’t drive back toward town. Instead, he heads in the opposite direction—away from the arena, away from the lights, into the dark stretch of highway that leads to nothing but open land.
“Where are we going?” you ask.
“You’ll see.”
His hand rests on the gear shift, close enough to your thigh that you’re acutely aware of it. The radio plays something slow and country that you don’t recognize, and the silence between you isn’t uncomfortable—just charged. Waiting.
You watch the landscape change outside your window, buildings giving way to fields, streetlights disappearing until there’s nothing but darkness.
“This is very serial killer of you,” you say finally.
He glances over, amused. “Having second thoughts?”
“Just making an observation.”
“For the record, if I wanted to murder you, I wouldn’t take you somewhere this obvious.” He’s smiling now, thumb tapping against the steering wheel in time with the music. “Besides, you're still wearing my hat. That implies a certain level of trust.”
Your hand goes to the brim automatically. You’d almost forgotten it was there.
“Or a certain level of stupidity.”
“Maybe both.” He turns off the highway onto a dirt road, the truck bouncing slightly over the uneven ground. “We’re almost there.”
“Almost where?”
“Patience.”
The road winds upward, climbing steadily. Trees give way to open sky, and then suddenly you’re at the top of a hill and he's pulling over, killing the engine. The entire valley spreads out below—a sea of twinkling lights in the distance, small towns and scattered ranches creating constellations on the dark earth. Above, the sky is filled with stars, more than you’ve ever been able to see in the city.
“Oh,” you say quietly.
“Yeah.” He’s watching you instead of the view. “I like to come up here after a ride. Bulls fight back, fans scream—up here, no one asks anything of you.”
You tear your eyes away from the sky to look at him. “It’s beautiful.”
“It is,” he agrees. But he’s still looking at you, not the landscape.
“Pretty stars,” you say, but there's a challenge in the words. “Shame you haven’t looked at them once.”
“If you want to talk constellations, sweetie, I’ll play along.” He shifts in his seat, angling toward you. “Or you can admit you didn’t climb in my truck because you're fond of astronomy.”
“First of all, I didn’t climb in your truck.” You manage to find your voice. “You picked me up and put me in it.”
“Correct.” His mouth curves slow. “And then you latched onto me like a kitten falling out of a tree and said, and I quote, ‘don’t you dare put me down.’”
Your face heats. “My legs weren’t working—”
“Your legs were working just fine once we got to the truck.” His eyes hold yours. “You just didn’t want me to stop touching you.”
The tension in the truck is suffocating.
“Get in the back,” he says quietly.
Your stomach flips. “What?”
“The backseat.” He says it simply, nodding toward the leather bench seat behind you. “Go on. I’ll give you a head start.”
“A head start for what—”
“For getting comfortable before I join you.” His eyes are dark now, heated. “Unless you’d rather stay up here and stare out the windshield?”
You should probably ask more questions. Should probably think this through. Instead, you unbuckle your seatbelt and turn toward the back.
The console is in the way, making you climb over the seat awkwardly. You brace one hand on the seat back, getting one knee up on the console—
“Keep it moving, sweetie.”
You shoot him a look over your shoulder. “Make me.”
The crack of his palm against your ass is immediate, sharp enough to make you gasp. Then his hand is rubbing the spot gently, soothing.
“Consider it done."
“You just—”
“Helped you along. You asked for it.” He sounds completely unrepentant. “Would’ve been inconsiderate of me not to oblige.”
Your face is burning as you scramble the rest of the way into the backseat. You turn to glare at him through the gap between the seats.
“Comfortable back there?” he asks smugly.
“You’re an asshole.”
“And you like it.”
You settle into the backseat, heart pounding, very aware of how spacious it is. How the tinted windows make it feel private despite being parked on a hilltop. How he’s still in the front seat, just watching you squirm.
“Are you coming back here or not?”
“Depends.” He’s taking his sweet time, the bastard. “Are you going to keep that attitude when I do?”
“Probably.”
“Excellent.” He shifts, and you hear the driver’s door open. “I’d be disappointed if you didn’t.”
He gets out and you hear his boots on the ground, coming around to the back door. It opens and suddenly he’s there—too big for the space, filling the entire doorway as he climbs in with easy confidence.
The door closes behind him, and suddenly the truck feels very small.
He takes a seat, legs spread, one arm along the back of the headrest, and just looks at you.
“Come here.”
You move toward him and he guides you with hands on your waist until you’re straddling his lap exactly like you straddled the bull earlier. The position is familiar now, but infinitely more intimate. His hands settle on your hips, thumbs pressing into the hollows.
“Hi,” he says.
“Hi.”
The corner of his mouth lifts. “Still wearing my hat, I see.”
“You told me to keep it on.”
“I did.” His hands slide up your waist, then back down. “Looks good on you. Better than I imagined.”
“You imagined this?”
“From the second you put it on.” His eyes hold yours. “Imagined you exactly like this. In my lap, in my hat, in the back of my truck. Reality’s better, though.”
“Yeah?”
“Yeah.” His hand comes up to adjust the hat again, tilting it back slightly so he can see your face better. “Because now I get to see if you can follow through on what you started.”
You swallow. “And what did I start?”
“Everything.” His hand moves to cup your face, turning it toward his. “You sat up in those stands looking at me like eight seconds was nothing. Critiqued my form to my face. Then had the goddamn nerve to put on my hat in front of witnesses.” His other hand presses against your ribs, palm warm and steady through the thin cotton. “And for someone so unimpressed, your heart’s about to beat right through your shirt.”
You glance down at his hand on your ribs, then back up at him, tilting your head with mock innocence. “If you wanted to get your hands on me, you could’ve just asked nicely.”
“Is that right? Then allow me to ask you nicely.” His fingers curve around your jaw, thumb skimming your bottom lip. “Can I kiss you? Can I put my hands on you? Can I make you forget every reason you think this is a bad idea?”
The directness of it steals your breath.
“That's a lot of questions.”
“One word answers all of them.” His eyes search yours, glowing a deep red that’s almost otherworldly even in the dark. “So what's it going to be, sweetie? Yes or no?”
You want to make him work for it more. Tease him, push back, see how far you can take this.
Instead, you hear yourself say: “Yes.”
His smile is devastating. “Say it again.”
"Yes."
Then his mouth is on yours, and every thought evaporates.
The kiss isn’t tentative or testing—it’s all-consuming. His tongue slides against yours with clear intent, his hand tightening in your hair to angle you exactly how he wants you. You make a sound that’s embarrassingly desperate and feel his mouth curve against your lips.
“There it is,” he murmurs, pulling back just enough to speak. “Knew you’d make those pretty sounds.”
“Shut up.”
“Make me.”
You kiss him harder, fisting your hands in his shirt, and his laugh vibrates through you. His hand slides from your jaw to your throat—not squeezing, just resting there, feeling your pulse race under his palm.
“You taste even better than I thought you would,” he says against your mouth, kissing you again before you can respond. “Been thinking about this since you looked at me like I was wasting your time in those stands.”
“That was barely three hours ago—”
“Three hours too long.” His teeth catch your bottom lip, tugging gently. “Could’ve done this in the parking lot. In the diner. Hell, I thought about it on the practice bull when you were sitting in my lap, acting like you didn’t know what you were doing to me.”
You roll your hips like you did on the bull, teasing, feeling exactly how hard he is through the denim.
He hisses through his teeth.
“That's how we’re doing this, hm?” His hand slides from your throat to your hip, holding you still with effortless strength. “You want to play, princess? Fine. Let’s play.”
His mouth finds your neck and you gasp at the heat of it, at the scrape of teeth followed by the soothing stroke of his tongue. He’s marking you, and you both know it—intentional, claiming, leaving evidence that you were here, that you let him do this.
“Sylus—”
“I know. I can feel you shaking. You want more.” His hand slips under your shirt, settling at your low back. “You’ve been worked up since the bull, haven’t you?”
Heat runs up your spine. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
“Liar.” His teeth graze your earlobe. “I felt how you were shaking. Saw how flushed you got. And I’d bet my prize money that if I touched you right now, I’d find you soaked.”
Heat floods through you at the accusation. “You’re very sure of yourself.”
“Am I wrong?”
You don’t answer, which is answer enough.
“Thought so. You want something? Then ask nicely.” His smile presses against your throat. “You made such a point of it earlier. So ask.”
Your pride wars with your need. “I don’t beg—”
“I didn’t ask you to beg. I asked you to ask.” He pulls back to look at you, and there’s heat in his eyes, but something patient, too. “What do you want?”
The way he’s looking at you—like he’ll wait all night if that’s what it takes, like he’ll give you anything you ask for as long as you just ask—makes something in you soften.
“Touch me, Sylus,” you say quietly. “Please.”
“See? That wasn’t so hard.” His hand slides higher up your shirt, fingers tracing your stomach, your ribs, the underside of your breast. “And since you asked so nicely…”
His thumb brushes across your nipple and you gasp, arching into the touch.
“That’s what I wanted to see.” His voice has gone dark, satisfied. “You, letting go. Not thinking so hard about your next smart comment. Just feeling.”
His thumb circles again, slower this time, and you bite your lip to keep from making another embarrassing noise.
“Don’t.” His other hand finds your chin, pulling your lip free with his thumb. “I want to hear it. Every sound. Every breath. No one can hear you out here but me. So let me hear what I do to you.”
He rolls your nipple between his fingers, and you can’t stop the moan that escapes.
“Perfect.” He sounds wrecked. “Do that again.”
“Sylus, please—”
“Please, what?” His mouth finds your jaw, kissing a path to your ear. “Use your words. Tell me what you need.”
“More—I need more—”
“More of this?” His hand moves to your other breast, giving it the same attention. “Or more of me?”
“Both—” Your hips rock forward on instinct, and this time he doesn’t stop you. Sylus lets you grind against him, his free hand at your hip guiding the movement.
“That’s it, pretty girl. Take what you need.” His breathing has gone rough. “Show me how badly you want this.”
You rock against him again and feel him twitch beneath you, hard and hot even through all the layers of clothing.
“Fuck.” The curse slips out raw and unfiltered. “You feel what you do to me? How hard you make me when you move like that?”
“Yes—”
“Good. Because I’d like to return the favor.” His hand slides from your breast down your stomach, fingers playing at the button of your jeans. “Say yes.”
“Yes—god, yes—”
Your yes barely lands before his mouth is back on yours, hot and wet and relentless as he flicks the button open and slides the zipper down with ease. “Lift up for me.”
You do, bracing your hands on his shoulders, and he helps you shimmy out of your jeans and underwear. They get stuck on your boots, and you both fumble with them, laughing breathlessly until you’re finally naked from the waist down.
“Leave them. Boots and hat stay on,” he decides, eyes dragging over you. “I like the look.”
“Of course you do.”
“City girl spread out like a cowgirl in the back of my truck?” His hands are on your thighs, spreading them wider. “That’s a fantasy I didn’t know I had until right now.”
He’s still fully clothed, and there’s something obscene about it that makes you squirm—you half-naked in his lap while he’s still in his jeans and t-shirt.
“Don’t get shy on me now.” His thumb brushes your inner thigh, dangerously close to where you need him. “You’ve been pushing me all night. Testing me. And you’ve been so damn good at it, too.”
He glides a single finger through your center and you gasp at the contact, your body curving into his touch involuntarily.
“Christ,” he groans. “All this for me?”
You can’t form words.
“Since the bull?” His fingers trace through your wetness, maddeningly light. “Since I had my hands on your hips? Or before that—since you watched me ride?”
“All of it,” you manage.
“All of it.” He sounds way too satisfied with himself. “So you were impressed. You were just too stubborn to admit it.”
“Your ego—”
“Is about to get a lot bigger.” He finds your clit and circles it slowly. “Because I’m going to make you come for me at least twice before you even think about taking my cock. Understand?”
Your breath catches. “Twice?”
“Minimum.” His hand slides higher, cupping you fully now. “You’ve been wound up all night. I’m not rushing this on account of your impatience.”
“Don’t—ah—” Your protest dies when his finger circles slowly. “Don’t be smug about it—”
“Too late.” He watches your face with wicked eyes as he touches you, learning what makes you gasp, what makes you grind down against his hand. “But I like that you’re still trying to tell me what to do. Keep it up. See where it gets you.”
His finger slides inside and you cry out, head falling forward to rest against his shoulder.
“That’s it. Take what you need. I’m not going anywhere.”
He works you slowly, adding another finger when you’re ready, his thumb finding your clit with devastating pressure. And all the while he’s murmuring praise against your temple—telling you how perfect you are, how good you feel, how beautiful you look falling apart for him.
“Sylus—I’m gonna—”
“I know. I can feel it.” His fingers move faster. “There. Right there. Come on, princess. Let me see what happens when you finally stop fighting it. Make it count. I've got you.”
The command combined with his fingers and his voice and the heat of him beneath you—it’s all too much. Your orgasm hits with a cry, clenching around his fingers as pleasure crashes through you. He works you through it, drawing it out until you’re trembling and oversensitive, and only then does he slowly withdraw his hand.
You’re still catching your breath when he brings his fingers to his mouth.
Your eyes go wide. “Sylus—”
“Shh.”
His own eyes close as he tastes you, tongue dragging over the pads of his fingers. When his lashes lift again, he looks wrecked in a way you've never seen.
“That,” he murmurs, lips closing around his knuckle, “is going to be a problem.”
You can’t think, can’t breathe, can’t do anything but stare at his mouth.
“A...problem?”
“For me. And now for you,” he says, hand already sliding up your thigh once more. “That’s one. Now let’s get you the second one before I lose my mind.”
You shake your head. “I can’t—I’m too—”
“You can. You will.” His two fingers slip inside with little resistance, fucking you slowly but without mercy. “I need you ready for me. Need to make sure your body can handle what it’s begging for. Understand?”
Your hand flies to his wrist—not to stop him, just to hold on.
He looks down where you're holding him, lips brushing your cheek. "Oh? That bad already?"
Your head falls to his shoulder. “This is torture—”
"Maybe." His thumb presses against your clit again and you jerk. “But you’ll thank me for it later.”
His fingers work you back up, and despite the oversensitivity, despite thinking you couldn’t possibly—
“That's it.” His forehead presses against yours, breath hot against your lips. “Feel that? Let it build. Don't rush. I want all of it.”
You’re climbing again impossibly, every nerve ending screaming, and when his fingers curl just right—
“Fuck—already?” He increases the pressure, and you cry out. “Greedy little thing. Go ahead. Give me another one.”
You do, less intense than the first but somehow deeper, clenching around his fingers while he murmurs approval.
“That’s two.” He slowly withdraws his hand, and your breath hitches at the loss. Before you can process the movement, his fingers are at your lips. “Open.”
You do, and he slides them into your mouth—the same fingers that were just inside you. The taste is foreign and intimate and when you automatically close your lips around them, his breathing goes ragged.
“Look at that.” His eyes are locked on your mouth. “So obedient when it suits you, hm?”
You swirl your tongue around his fingers deliberately, and his hips jerk beneath you. Then you bite down lightly and he laughs.
“There she is.” He pulls his hand away, already working his belt. “Now help me with this before I lose what’s left of my patience.”
Your fingers join his at the buckle. “Didn’t know you had any patience to begin with.”
“I’m a very patient man.” He gets his jeans open just enough to free himself. “Just not when it comes to you.”
There’s a moment where your brain can’t connect the visual to reality.
His cock sits in his palm, thick and heavy, already flushed and glistening with precum that's slowly swelling under his thumb. A single vein runs along the shaft, steady and pulsing with each heartbeat you can feel through your own.
You felt him earlier—broad and unforgiving, even through denim, against the curve of your ass every time your hips rolled back into him on the practice bull. You’d convinced yourself it was just the momentum. Coincidence. Adrenaline.
You look up at him. Then down. Then up again.
“Show-off,” you scoff, but it comes out thinner than intended.
He huffs out a laugh, low and disbelieving. "Sweetie, if you're going to bluff to my face, at least don't drool while you do it."
You try for nonchalant, rolling your eyes and straightening your spine. It does nothing to hide the tremor in your knees.
“You’re shaking. Relax.” Before you can protest, he’s already cupping your jaw, kissing you slowly, deeply, thoroughly, in a way that says slow down, you’re okay, I’m right here. He pulls away only when he’s sure you’re not trembling anymore. “You can handle it.”
He positions you over him, hands on your hips, guiding you onto the blunt head of his cock.
“Slow,” he instructs. “Take your time. Let your body adjust.”
You sink down slowly and the stretch makes you gasp. He’s patient—letting you control the pace, hands steady on your waist.
“That’s it. Breathe. You’re taking me so well.” His voice is strained. “Almost there. Just a little more.”
When you're fully seated, you’re both breathless.
“There,” he says roughly. “That’s one.”
Understanding hits you through the haze.
“You’re counting,” you say.
“I’m counting.” His hands squeeze your hips. “You lasted eight seconds on that bull. Let’s see if you can make it to nine on me.”
“And if I can’t?”
“Then we keep trying until you do.” His teeth scrape your collarbone. “I’ve got all night.”
You brace your hands on his shoulders and start to move, rolling your hips the way he taught you earlier.
“There you go. Just like that. Find your rhythm.”
You do, and his hands help guide you, help you find the perfect angle.
“That’s two,” he says when you rock down particularly hard.
When you really start to ride him it’s not pretty, not practiced, but instinctive and desperate. The stretch, the fullness—it's almost too much, the way every shift of your hips makes him groan beneath you. His hands slide up your back, threading into your hair when your rhythm stutters.
“Three.”
You’re already nearing the edge of release again—oversensitized and overwhelmed but chasing that feeling anyway.
“Four.”
“Sylus, it’s—too—too much—”
“You can take it. I know you can.” His fingers circle your clit slowly, and you can't help the way you clench around him. His jaw flexes, eyes closing for half a second. “Not yet, sweetie. Give me five more. I know you’ve got it in you.”
“I can’t—”
“Yes, you can. You’re tougher than you think.” You slam down hard, chasing that feeling, and his control visibly cracks. “Five—fuck—”
Your thighs are burning, your breath coming in gasps, but you don’t stop. Can’t stop. You sink onto him once more, inch by inch.
“Six.”
“Sylus—”
“I know. I can feel it. The way you’re clenching around me.” His other hand tightens in your hair. “But you don’t get to come until we hit nine. Think you can hold it?”
It’s torture. Exquisite torture.
You ride him in one long stride, hips lifting until just the tip holds you, then sinking back down until he fills you to the base.
“Christ—Seven—”
Your thighs are shaking now, barely holding on, and he knows it.
“That's it. Take it.” The words are hot against your throat. Everything else fades. “Eight.”
“I can’t hold it—”
“Yes you can. Give me one more." His hands tighten around your hips, holding you steady. "One more, and it's all yours.”
You slam down hard, and he groans your name into your mouth.
“Nine.”
You shatter, clenching around him, and suddenly he’s moving—flipping you both so you’re on your back across the seat, legs spread, boots planted on either side of him as he looms over you.
“My turn.” He pulls almost all the way out, your walls still fluttering around him as you chase the end of your third orgasm. "Unless you want me to stop?"
“Sylus—please—I need—”
He pushes back in, driving deep into you in one motion. You wait for the rhythm, the thrust, the relief. He doesn't give it to you.
“I know what you need.” Your hips twitch once, and his fingers tighten around them in gentle warning. “But I need to hear you say it.”
You clutch at his forearms, nails digging into the taut muscle. "Sylus—move—"
"Move how?" He stays infuriatingly still. "Faster? Harder? You're going to have to be more specific than that, sweetie."
"Harder—I need you to—god, just fuck me, Sylus, please—"
"Finally."
It sounds like relief, like hunger, like he's been holding himself back as much as he's made you wait.
Then he moves—hard and fast and exactly what you asked for—and your back arches off the seat. His hands shift to your thighs, spreading you wider, holding you open at an angle that hits deeper, more intense in all the places you’re already trembling from before.
"Is this what you needed? This what you've been trying to say?"
"Yes—ah—yes—"
One hand slides between you, finding your oversensitive clit, and you nearly sob.
“Wanted this since I saw you—” His hips snap forward harder. “That bored look on your pretty face—wanted to fuck it right off you—”
He’s not counting anymore. Not teasing. Just taking what he needs, and something about the raw desperation in it makes you clench around him.
“Jesus—” he groans, head dropping forward. “—do that again.”
You do, and he’s on you, mouth on your shoulder, teeth catching skin—not to mark you this time, but to survive you. His hand leaves your thigh to brace against the window behind you, giving him more leverage. The truck rocks with the force of his thrusts and you don’t care, can’t care about anything except the feeling of him inside you.
“Too much—”
“Not enough. One more,” he says, and it’s not a request. “Give me one more and I’ll give you everything.”
You’re wound up impossibly again, every inch of you too sensitive, his fingers and his cock and his voice still pushing you higher, higher, higher—
“That’s it. You feel that?” His thrusts get harder, more erratic, fingers circling your aching clit as he pounds into you. “You've got me. Fuck—I'm right there with you, okay? Right there—stay with me. Take me with you. Now.”
You clench around him helplessly, so tight that Sylus feels every pulse, every aftershock, every sensation of your orgasm wrapped around his cock. He follows immediately after, burying himself deep with a sound that’s almost pained, spilling the heat of his release inside you, holding you like he's afraid you'll disappear. His hand grips the leather seat like he might rip it out of the truck, and you feel the way his whole body goes taut before collapsing against yours.
For a moment he stays frozen like that, forehead pressed to yours, breathing hard. Then he carefully pulls out, and you both wince. His hands are immediately around you, pulling you up and gathering you against his chest as he shifts to sit back against the seat.
You end up curled in his lap, dazed and spent, his arms wrapped around you like he's not quite ready to let go yet.
His mouth finds your temple in a single, unhurried kiss. Another follows just under your jaw, then another on your shoulder. He doesn't speak, just holds you while your breathing slowly evens out.
“Holy shit," you finally manage.
“Yeah.” His laugh is breathless against your neck. “Holy shit.”
He shifts you carefully in his lap, pulling you tighter against his chest so you're tucked under his chin, legs draped over his thighs. Your body feels like liquid, every muscle completely melted, nerve endings still firing in aftershocks. His hands are gentle now—one rubbing slow circles on your back, the other reaching for tissues from the center console. He takes care of you with surprising tenderness, his touch soft where moments ago it was demanding.
“You with me, city girl?” He speaks quietly into your hair, pressing a kiss on top of your head. “How are you feeling?”
You lift your head to look at him. “Like I just got thrown off a bull. Except better.”
“Mission accomplished.” His smile is relieved, then turns knowing. “You’re going to feel this tomorrow. Fair warning.”
“Is that supposed to scare me?”
“It’s supposed to prepare you.” He glances down at you, hand tracing patterns against your hip. “Every time you sit down in those bleachers tomorrow, you’re going to remember exactly what happened in this truck.”
“Bold of you to assume I’ll be in the bleachers.”
“You will be. Front row, sweetie.” His voice is confident but not cocky. “So I can see the moment you stop pretending I don’t impress you.”
You could play it cool. Noncomittal. Hedge your bets. But the way he’s looking at you—hopeful and honest and maybe a little uncertain underneath all that confidence—makes you want to be honest with him, too.
“Yeah. I’ll be there.”
He goes still for half a second, just long enough for you to catch the spark in his eyes. He looks at you for a long moment like he's trying to memorize something, then clears his throat.
“That's good. Really good,” he says it low, fighting a smile and losing. One hand squeezes your hip while the other reaches for your jeans. “Here. Lift up. Let's get you dressed before I say something that makes you reconsider.”
You do, and he helps you shimmy them back on. They get stuck on your boots—again—and you’re both laughing together like a shared secret by the time you finally get them past your ankles.
“These damn boots,” you mutter.
“Careful." His tone is almost protective. "Those boots are innocent. They stayed on like they were supposed to. That's what matters.” He helps work your jeans over them carefully. "In fact, they're the only thing that behaved." His eyes land on something near his feet as he's tucking his shirt back in. He picks up his hat, holding it between two fingers. "This one apparently couldn't handle the ride."
“When did that happen?”
“No idea. I was distracted.” He settles it back on your head like it belongs there, adjusting the brim. “There. That’s better. That’s the look I wanted.”
“What look?”
“City girl in a cowboy hat looking like she just got thoroughly ruined by a bull rider.” His smile is pure satisfaction. “It’s a good look on you.”
“Your ego is showing again.”
“Can you blame me?” He cups your face, eyes warm as he leans in to kiss you, softer now, but no less intense. “Now. Where are you staying? I should get you back before your friend calls the cavalry.”
While he’s focused on finding the location on his phone, you glance around the fogged interior. The windows are completely opaque—condensation covering every surface, hiding the world outside. On impulse, you reach back and trace your name in the moisture on the back window.
You’re halfway through when you catch his eyes in the rearview mirror, watching you with an expression you can’t quite read.
“Hold on.” He sets his phone in the cupholder and twists around, reaching back to add his name right next to yours in the condensation, then draws a heart connecting them.
“There.” He settles back into his seat, looking pleased. “Now we match.”
Your heart does something complicated behind your ribs. Before you can respond, your phone erupts with buzzing from somewhere in the passenger seat.
Tara: GIRL WHERE ARE U
Tara: are u ALIVE
Tara: send proof of life IMMEDIATELY!!!
“Your friend thinks I've got you hogtied behind the barn,” Sylus says, reading the texts over your shoulder. “Funny. I haven't even gotten my rope out.”
"Yet?" The word slips out before you can stop it.
His laugh rumbles through his chest as he pulls you back against him, like the sound is something you're meant to feel, not hear. “You're unbelievable. Now give me the phone.”
“Why—”
“Proof of life. Come here.”
He pulls you against him with one arm, holding your phone up with the other. You’re both completely disheveled—his silver hair a mess, your face flushed, his hat crooked on your head—both grinning like idiots.
He takes the photo and hands your phone back.
“There. Send that. Should ease her concerns.”
You send it.
The response is instantaneous.
Tara: OH MY GOD
Tara: OH MY GOD
Tara: U LOOK SO HAPPY
Tara: IS THAT HIS TRUCK???
Tara: THATS MY GIRLLLLL
Then another message pops through. A photo.
It’s Tara—equally disheveled, equally pleased—with her arm around a blonde girl. The blonde girl, the one who'd been glaring daggers at you earlier. Both of them look extremely satisfied with themselves.
You stare at your phone. “Oh my god.”
Sylus leans over to look, and his laugh is genuine.
“Looks like you and your friend both got your money's worth out of the rodeo.” He starts the engine, hand immediately returning to rest on your thigh. “You ready, sweetie?”
“For what?”
“The twenty-minute drive where I try very hard not to think about pulling over and seeing if you can make it to ten.”
“Ten?” You blink at him. “That’s…ambitious.”
He doesn’t miss a beat.
“Tomorrow, then.” He says it with such certainty, like it's already decided. Like there's no question you'll both end up here again.
He shifts into drive, thumb tracing lazy patterns on your leg. The radio plays quiet jazz. The world outside is dark except for passing streetlights and the occasional glow of distant houses. You settle back into your seat, watching the open road unfold ahead of you.
Then you catch it in the side mirror—the back window of his truck, still fogged from the heat you created together. And there, illuminated by the moonlight, you can just make out the shapes: your name and his, connected by that careful heart he drew.
Your heart stumbles in that way that always means trouble.
His hand squeezes your thigh once, like he knows exactly what you're thinking.
You look over at him—at his profile in the dim light, at the small smile playing at his lips, at the way he glances over at you like he can't help himself—and cover his hand with yours.

Dad Sylus makes every room feel a little bit smaller when he walks in.
He's unpredictable and doesn't say much. So mysterious, he moves through the estate like he haunts it.
Even when he's on a business trip, his absence follows you everywhere. And when he's home, your heart runs like it's trying to flee when you find him staring at you first. Like a challenge, as if he's quietly sizing up your potential.
Dad Sylus might look super strict and old-fashioned, but he doesn't seek to be the authority in your life. Less like a ruler, more like a castle. He doesn't reprimand your spoiled attitude and the way you tease him. Or for wearing tiny clothes, even when it raises eyebrows at the country club.
Bend over in his vicinity and he's perfectly fine with catching your lacy panties under a mini golf skirt. His idea of discipline is him reaching over and curling a finger under the seat of your panties. To pull and snap! the sticky fabric against your lips.
"Nice swing," He compliments, grinning truly sincere before going back to the game.
Owning a multi-billion dollar business is not easy, even a man like Dad Sylus gets so stressed. His favorite way to destress is to find you lazily sprawled out on your stomach in bed. Like always.
As you scroll through your phone, he settles behind you. Head resting on your butt, legs trapped under him so you can't crawl away.
"Hey! You're too heavy-!" You whine, trying to move your thighs but you're completely immobilized, "Get offff"
"In a moment, I have a meeting with troublesome men tonight. At this very hour, they plan to ruin us. It will fail but.." He sighs like an eye roll, and you freeze feeling a large warm hand feel up and down the curve of your ass, " You don't really mind if I lay here, right kitten? You make a very good pillow."
So many pet names, whenever Dad Sylus wants your attention and crude affection, which is all the time.
Kitten. Sweetie. Baby. Princess. His voice lures you into his touch every time. Like the way you'd pet a cat, he's careful but so eager.
You relent with a scowl, "Fine..but no snoring."
“Good girl. Now stop moving, pillows don’t squirm.”
You can't believe how scattered you get every time he opens his mouth. Body brimming with heat and you trying to fight the urge to relieve it.
You swear Dad Sylus lives in the walls or something. Always buying you things the minute it comes out of your mouth, regardless if he's around or not. Millions of dollars worth of jewelry left on your bed. New clothes in your closets. His spending habits used to confuse you, but you can interpret the gifts as his way of being nice. So you happily accept each one.
And it doesn't matter what you want or need, Dad Sylus will get it for you with no shame. The charger to your vibrator breaks and the next day you find a mini sex store inside your bedside drawer. A variety of toys with different colors and curves for your pleasure. You wonder if this is something your dad should be giving to you, especially the dildo.
You despise it, the way it looks and feels so realistic in your hands. You're too embarrassed to give it back and fussy that he gave it to you, but you're curious enough one night to give it a try.
And damn your curiosity. It takes one time of slowly easing yourself down on it's thick silicon shaft wet with lube (that he also bought), chewing on your lip as you're touched in places you've never felt before. One time becomes multiple over the course of weeks, months. Your latest gift from Dad Sylus being the only thing that can make you cum the way you want. You're completely addicted to the stretch that leaves you breathless-vibrator be damned.
Dad Sylus has strange habits but that's just the way he is. Like picking out your outfits for a day trip or personally making your meals (despite having chefs on-call). He leaves the door ajar when he showers so you can hear him sing a classic. Pays no mind to your prying eyes and he lets you enter if you need something, even though there are plenty other bathrooms.
It becomes a normal occurrence for you to crawl into his bed when you can't sleep. You forget Dad Sylus ritually sleeps naked, but by the time you're drowning in sheets laced with his scent, it's way too late and you don’t care. You're out like a light to the sounds of his sleepy moans, to your name timid under his breath.
He cuddles you when you roll towards his side of the bed. As if his cock wouldn't be brushing against your thighs all night. Sometimes you join him nude and Dad Sylus complains about how cold you are. He mothers you in his muscles when you try to inch away. Hums a lullaby in his low gravel voice as a way to appease you.
He can't tell if you know what you're doing, but Dad Sylus doesn't mind. He's willing to satiate any desire you might have, except the one that has you mewling his name at night. He's so mean about it but fair enough, considering how highly inappropriate that would be.
So when you "accidentally" brush a hand against his belt and let it linger, he takes your wrist and gives it a kiss. When you try to go for an actual kiss, he distracts you with something shiny and it always works.
Even perched on his lap entertained by the TV, he holds your waist steady in his big hands. He admires your hips and stops the subtle grind of your lower half hoping to provoke him.
Being denied over and over again, no matter what, is infuriating. Especially when you can get anything else you want. But the rejection only makes you bolder, much to his enjoyment.
The idea of giving up doesn't exist in your head. You're entitled and persistent just like the spoiled brat you are, but it's his fault isn't it? He encourages it, Dad Sylus admires the depth of your lust for him and for life. How it grows day by day, never satisfied. You have his avarice, maybe even more than that. And by god is he proud of it.
You're shy to say what's on your mind though, even when it's all over your face. But you're a sly one, crawling to kneel between his legs as you corner him. A mere kitten eyeing him down like a beast.
It's a sight he'll never forget, the curve of your nose and warmth from your blush-stained cheek nuzzling against his growing print. Like an animal that wants food. Absolute perfection.
"I was wondering where you ran off to" He says, looking away from his book. More attentive to how pleased you seem. Like you've won something.
Dad Sylus is a lover of learning. Of teaching you a thing or two. He can't let you get what you want that easily, what kind of lesson would that be?
So he holds your head back with one hand. Gently guides your tongue away from his firming erection and back into your pouty little mouth. Letting you suck on width of his thumb instead.
"Am I on the menu tonight?" He questions, tenderly amused as your mouth hollows. He rubs the wet fleshy inside of your cheek and plays with the flick of your tongue "You already ate your dinner, but you look so hungry.."
"Maybe it wasn’t enough.." You retort, eyes narrowed with his finger still in your mouth, and you lick around it with baited persuasion,
You're joking, obviously, but he looks serious when he says, “That appetite of yours is quite impressive.”
It takes patience, and Dad Sylus considers himself a very patient man. He has to be in order to be so, but you make him reconsider everything.
You exist inside a place intensely buried in his soul that's foreign to him, and it desperately wants to be freed. Surprises come rare to a man that's seen everything. He ponders contemplative but his wicked grin already knows the answer, "Tell me what you're in the mood for kitten. I'm feeling generous tonight."
To Dad Sylus, all the years of stalking you from a distance is worth it when he decides to indulge you. Getting to see your sweet beautiful eyes grow big like saucers. Mouth drooling, thighs squeezing together when he slowly unbuckles his belt in his favorite red arm chair.
Night sky. Roaring rain. Handsome fire behind you.
The flames make the crimson in his eyes alluringly haunting as Dad Sylus pulls out the long heavy cock you've been teasing. Same one you've been creaming around all this time much to your surprise. The only difference is this one is real and leaks against his fist. It's raw and it smells like him. Like a real man.
"Looks familiar doesn't it?" He teases, " But you already knew that. Don't look so surprised."
He strokes himself, up and down in front of your face. A drip of precum falls on your nose and you don't even wipe it. You're only meant to look, hands tucked under your plush calves kneeling before him. No touching.
"Why did you give me that toy daddy?" You ask him, feigning innocence,
You watch the way his head slant to the side mischievously, "I wanted to know what you'd do with it." He goes, without an inch of shame, "I'm glad it was well received."
Your face heats up with the idea of him listening through the cracked door to your bedroom. Him seeing you keep it close to your bed. There's a sense of regret you feel for being so shameless, but he reaches over to caress your face,
"You sound so beautiful pleasuring yourself like that. And when you feel good, I do too ."
"Then.." You offer with a subtle leer, "I should show my gratitude right? For the gift?"
"Sure," A ringed finger curls to draws you in closer, where you can lay your head on his meaty thigh, "But nothing more and nothing less kitten."
He chuckles at your huff and taps his swollen cock head against your pout playfully. Mixes precum with your lip gloss that you immediately lick. It's sweet, just like the soft moan that leaves his throat when you kiss his cock the way you kiss his cheek before breakfast. Lips soft and innocently pressed on his tip. Slow pecks against his shaft but you can't stop your tongue peeking out for another taste.
"Tease.." He sighs pleasantly, cock smearing over your bottom lip,
"You don't like it?" You ask, tasting him on your lips
"Does it seem that way?" He muses, eyes glancing to his cock then to your mouth, "Do it again. Give daddy one of your kisses."
It's sloppy, your mouth covering him in your slipping drool. Wiping every bead of precum that drips from the head with the curl and flick of your tongue.
"Keep going.." He gently urges, a hand smoothing over your hair, "Show me how grateful you are."
The taste of Dad Sylus takes root in your brain, growing an arousal that dampens your panties to ruin. You can't stop yourself from wrapping your lips around the head, feeling it pulse against your tongue as you suck.
"Mm..kitten you're letting greed consume you" He lightly scolds,
But he doesn't make any move to pull out. Rather, he urges deep deep past your lips, eases your jaw to widen like your eyes. Avoiding your teeth as he's snug heavy in your throat. You squeal and gag, trying to pull away on full instinct.
"Don't run..you asked for this," He's quick, puts a hand on the back of your head keeping you still as he slots back in, "You can do it. Just relax and breathe."
Dad Sylus lovingly fucks the path down your throat, feeling how you melt. Your tongue obedient and caresses his length as he strokes himself with it. You feel him and all the dilated blood vessels firm with the wetness of your throat.
"You're a fast learner. No surprise there." He breathes your praises, cock twitching along the gentle suction of your doughy cheeks, "You feel full kitten?"
Air passes through your nose, but your head feels light and fuzzy as you moan weakly nodding your head. You're soaked to tears with your heart racing, inner thighs and your pussy all drenched, like the beads of sweat running down back.
Dad Sylus can almost taste you in his mouth. Your scent, sweeter than ever, makes his cock leak like it's crying down your throat.
For the first time in his life, his patience runs empty. Whether its appropriate or not, whether it's right or wrong, that was never a question. Dad Sylus sets you on the priceless rug in front of the fire. Gifts you the unforgettable sight of him puling off his reading glasses, and undoing his tie with the rest of his clothes.
You pull him impatiently to your lips, arms wrapping hungrily around his neck. A very indulgent kiss that has his lower half grinding needily between your legs, against the wetness that overtakes your panties.
"Ha..what a messy kitten…" He whispers with a mocking tune, fingers rubbing your slit, “I didn’t know you were this sensitive.”
A chair pillow placed under your head as Dad Sylus peels the clothes off your body, mouth immediately on the skin that's exposed to him just like the firelight. Sucking the hardening peaks of your tits, the rise and fall of your stomach when your shirt goes. Leaving bite marks at your hips to kiss down your pubic bone, down to your pussy when your bottoms are pulled below your knees.
"Are you sure is this what you want?" A friendly last warning he offers, before you relationship descends into great darkness, "I won't stop once you get me going. Even if you tell me to."
He's grinning when his hushed words make you squirm like you're trying to hide from him.
"Good," You say with a puff of indignant air, back arching as he nips your inner thigh, "You're not allowed to leave me for the rest of the night. Tomorrow night too. And! The night after that."
"Cute.." He whispers fondly, like your words revive something in him, "You don’t actually hate me do you?"
"…Isn't it obvious?"
An undeniable yes, and Dad Sylus wastes no time with it. The fire behind you can't compare to his gaze bearing into yours. His mouth moves like he's wretched to consume every inch of you swallowed like time is endless.
Your body's been brimming with excitement since you cornered him. You're so sensitive the sound of his lips covered in your arousal, making out slowly with your clit is too much. When he slowly feeds you two thick fingers, your back arches off the carpet in bliss.
"D-ah-daddy.."
"I know kitten" He coos, "Such a tight little thing even though you love fucking that fake cock."
Even so, his fingers and his mouth wreck you in perfect tandem. You're a sweaty, shaking mess like your body is short circuiting, "Feels-s-good-" You croon, "More..please "
The once quiet study is filled with your loud cries as Dad Sylus devours you with no mercy. Even when you thread your fingers through his hair and pull, he groans blissful and pulls against your grip. Stuffs his face while feeding your pussy his fingers, double the size of your own. Rubbing the places you're fragile at so affectionately. He doesn't stop until you're squirting warm into his mouth with nonsense blubbering from your lips.
He's dreamt about this moment for years. He's always been jealous of his own gift to you, and he makes a mental note to get rid of it.
You don't need it anymore, a meager toy would never make you so audacious to get on top. To keep him down as you line his cock between your thighs at your core.
Even with how much confidence you exude, Dad Sylus and his loving hands escape your restraints to smooth out the nervous shivers down your spine.
"Scared?" He asks delicately, kissing behind your ear before whispering, "Don’t rush it.”
The head of his cock pushing in almost melts away inside the second you impale yourself.
"..Good girl" He groans with a faint growl, "Nice and slow.."
The head is enough to have you whimpering, his fake replica never felt this thick " 's so big daddy.." you softly mewl
"Of course it's big I’m your Daddy kitten" He drips back into your ear, while holding your chin with gentle fingers, knowing damn well it's not nearly enough, "I’ll always be too big for you."
You glare at him mocking you and hug his neck, face dug into the crook where his cologne smells the strongest. Dad Sylus holds you like that in his arms. Like your trying to crawl beneath his skin. You shake your head, biting his neck when you sink down a little past the tip, where he gets all thick and veiny.
"Sit on your throne princess" He whispers like a bite to your earlobe, from you squeezing like his cock like he owes you something, dragging up and down shallowly, "That's it..let me in."
You're tempted to go all the way down to settle on his lap, but you want to mess with him. A little. As payback. So you pause.
"Hm..?" a lazy hum rumbles from his throat,
"I can't.." You whisper almost like your out of focus, " Too much-"
Which is so far from the truth, but he takes the bait. For a moment.
"That's alright" He promises with a sarcastic smirk, seeing right through you, "I had a feeling you couldn’t handle it. I’ll just give you the tip, how about that?"
"That's n-not what I meant-"
You try to sink even lower but his grip stops you immediately.
"But you just said it’s too much for you," His words condescending , "And I would never dream of hurting my one and only. No matter how much I want to stretch her little pussy out."
You moan almost impatiently, writhing against massive chest. You hear him chuckle, nipping and kissing at your neck.
"But my thighs are sore.." You snivel, another lie
In response to that, Dad Sylus changes positions. Puts you on your back with him hanging above you, with enough force you can't fight back.
"Better now?" He asks, holding you to his liking before pushing back inside. Barely. His hips give shallow strokes while beaming at the sight of your pouty face, "You're so cute whining like that."
The smugness of his smile makes you quick to get your legs around him with a frown. Just as he taught you in the gym, your thighs give an overwhelming squeeze. Ankles crossed behind his back before he can stop you.
“A-ah..”It buries him immediately, "Christ.." He hisses, "So you were messing with me huh?"
He can't stop it, the way he slides deep with so much ease a pleasurable shudder travels from him into you.
" It's not a good to lie to me baby" He groans, lips flashing a salacious smile. His hips immediately start to reel and push, breaking out of your hold but you don't even care. Thighs wide to accommodate him, "Be good and..take your punishment."
Dad Sylus fucks like you imagined he would. He might be kind to you, he might treat you like a spoiled princess but the strength of his body is barbaric. He grabs your hands trying to touch him and binds them together above your head. So easily done, it knocks the air out of your lungs.
"Daddy s-slow-" You half-beg as he ruts into your sloppy cunt. His quiet office overwhelmed with the lecherous sound of skin smacking, of his growls like your were made to mate with him.
"I gave you slow and you didn't want that." He says, breath fanning your face like an aggressive beast, "I rather give it to you like this kitten-I might as well, you've been grabbing at it for awhile."
Dad Sylus knows that his ruthlessness is what you've been hoping for all this time. You start tearing up, whimpering for him, but he doesn't listen. The hot squeeze of your cunt and the pull of your glassy eyes bring him unfathomable pleasure and it loosens his composure.
He's flipping you over on your knees fucking you full in front of the flames. Your entire body bakes in the heat, dripping in his arms like nectar. He's groping at your chest, selfishly all over your smaller body. Hips digging where he wants to barely thrusting. His cock fits so much better than the toy, knocking on the spots entangled in your stomach that make you quake in his grip. Your twitching cunt flooding him with drooling spasms.
"You take me in so well..so soft and wet.." He whispers against your skin, a hand feeling up where his swollen cock pokes dull through the supple flesh of your stomach, "I'm so proud baby"
“Daddy..” You’re blabbering, his praises always mess you up, “l-love your cock-“ You head tilts back to look up at him, "Love you-smuch daddy-"
Dad Sylus never thought you'd utter those words to him. It lodges his heart like a bullet and travels. Goes to his cock that throbs as you
You feel a hand hold the column of your neck, keeping your gaze on the way his eyes glimmer.
"About time you said it" He says warmly, "You already know I adore you. You belong to me-body and soul-"
“Mhmmhm” You do your best to nod through every mind shattering nudge towards your cervix.
Dad Sylus truly believes you are the same as him. It's why you can pleasure each other so intensely. His fingers squeezing the sides of your throat, teasing the hood of your clit below. Making your eyes flutter back. You clamping down on his length like a vice, milking him as you're about ready to burst around him.
Therefore there's nothing wrong with flooding your womb with his seed, dragging you back into his bullying hips. You own half of him and he possesses half of you. In his eyes, you and him are the same so it only makes sense to leave your sore pussy satisfied and bred. Glistening white slowly oozing to drip onto the carpet as your hole twitches from the after shocks. He pushes it all back in to watch it leak out again.
No one’s aftercare is as good as his. Dad Sylus is a natural. A hot shower then loose clothes and bed. Entangled with him as he kisses the soreness away.
Dad Sylus isn’t willing to share. What kind of man gives away his most prized possession? The idea of it is repulsive. Even when rumors start floating around and suspicions linger, nothing matters but making his girl happy.
Even if that means explaining to the situation to your mother.

A/N: I'm essentially posting a backlog of everything I've worked on during my hiatus, don't mind me. lol Just some quick things to note!
1. The title for this actually comes from a commedia dell'arte play by the Italian playwright Carlo Goldoni, written in 1746. I don't think it will end up tying into this fic in any meaningful way, but the title seemed aptly appropriate for my schemes. lol
2. Although I do have a general plot progression in mind, this is largely free form so we're just kind of playing it hard and fast over here. Updates will come when they come but make no mistake, this is all really just a setup for me to be deeply horny on main. (so the usual)

The office is immaculate and well furnished, and you positively hate every inch of it.
Hands balling into tight fists down at your sides, you keep your head respectfully bowed and try to focus on what the Lord Harbinger is saying. It’s hard, though. Everything felt like it was spinning dizzily around you in all of its ostentatious polished glory, so much mora poured into but a single room that could have been used instead to feed the villages and outposts across Snezhnaya.
You felt sick. Completely out of your element here where the lavish was a bygone conclusion and your dirty, work-worn boots don’t fit the aesthetic of the drapes.
“Are you listening, dear?” Regrator drawls, snapping you out of your spiraling thoughts.
But even though the tone of voice still remained as pleasant as ever, you couldn’t quite shake the sense that he wasn’t exactly thrilled to have you standing before him like this. Not that you could really blame him. The wealthy so rarely had any reason to cohort directly with the poor, after all. You were as good as a stray mongrel that had wandered in off the streets without first having been invited to do so. An unwanted and unnecessary guest that he would sooner be rid of than anything else.
You didn’t have much left in the way of options, however, and you bravely gather your resolve as you lift your head just a fraction of an inch to steal a quick, split second peek at him. Handsome, but decidedly dangerous. Very much so. Anyone with a working pair of eyes could have realized that much at just a glance.
“Yes, my lord. I’m sorry if it didn’t seem like I was.”
Drawing a slow, calculated breath that makes his narrow shoulders subtly rise and then fall, Regrator pins you in place with a pityingly sardonic smile. “Well, I suppose I do have to give you credit for one thing. Your manners are quite agreeable, aren’t they? That is not always the case with someone who is so very … lowborn. And you even had the courage to come here just to entreat me directly. That makes two things, then.”
You stamp down the urge to squirm in place, trying very hard not to think about how inconsequential you felt standing there in front of the Lord Harbinger like that. It wasn’t just the expensive room with its expensive furniture, excess and frivolity unlike anything you’ve ever seen before, shoved into every corner and on every shelf. It’s the way he watches you like a bug through a microscope.
Something to observe, not something to touch or make nice with, and certainly not something to invite to have a seat in one of the finely upholstered chairs that stand guard in front of his stately mahogany desk. There was no telling what you might have dragged in with you, what unsightly stains you might leave behind. So you continue to stand, and you don’t even dare to ask for anything more than that.
“With that being said,” he goes on; slow, thoughtful. Considering. “I have to admit I’m not exactly sure what you expect me to do with you. If it is a paycheck you need, then you should seek out one of the recruitment centers or intake officers, not me. Her Majesty is always happy to welcome young, plucky soldiers to her army’s ranks though. I’m sure you’d find much warmer reception there.”
As opposed to his frozen cold, bitter reception?
“My lord, I’ve already tried that. Many times, in fact. But they always tell me I’m not fit for service before they send me on my way again. The last man I spoke to said I wouldn’t even make good cannon fodder. Just a … another mouth for them to feed.”
“The medical division, then. Nurses are needed just as much as soldiers are.”
The sting of unshed tears creeps into your eyes, but you refused to let them fall. You’d already humiliated yourself enough just by marching into the Northland Bank and demanding an audience with its owner, you really didn’t want to add dramatics on top of that. It’s hard though, so hard.
“I - I’m terrified of blood, sir. I can’t stand the sight of it. Honest. I’m lucky if I don’t pass out on the spot but then I run the risk of spitting up my lunch. I’m no good as a medic either.”
Softly clicking his tongue, Regrator tips his head ever so slightly to one side and vaguely purses his lips at you. “In that case, allow me to ask you again: what am I supposed to do with you when you have no talent, no strengths to offer? I’d like to remind you that nothing is free in this world and I cannot simply give you a salary for no services rendered. So, tell me. What are you going to give me in exchange?”
“… I’m not sure, my lord. I’m sorry.”
“Don’t you think that’s something you should have considered before you came calling on me in my office?”
You flush hot at that, embarrassed by your tragic lack of foresight. But it was already much too late to remedy any of it, neither your uselessness nor the impulsive decision to come here, and you grope for an appropriate answer to the question. There had to be something.
“Forgive me, but … could you be in need of a maid, my lord? Someone to clean and tidy up for you, or - or perhaps to take care of other mundane tasks that are far beneath someone of your — impressive and noble bearing?”
That manages to earn you a scoff of a laugh as Regrator slowly shakes his head, looking almost rueful now.
“So you’re also well versed in the art of brown nosing too, I see.”
You’re almost startled to hear such crass language come out of his mouth, sounding all the more wrong in that dulcet, well cultured drawl of his.
But before either of you can make another move — you, to decide how you should respond to that unexpected drop of the mask and him, to dismiss you from his sight — the door to the office abruptly swings open with a sudden wrench.
“Pantalone!” The new man, this one utterly unknown to you, barks as he sweeps into the room, a whirlwind of dark, lifeless feathers that shudder at the slightest movement. “Did you approve my request for the research funding as I asked you to? I need to get started on the next phase soon. This is a highly time sensitive matter, you know.”
The door bangs shut behind him and, letting out a slow exhale through his nose, Regrator sedately leans back in his comfortable chair to glance up at the newcomer. Completely disengaging himself from the fact that you were still standing there, waiting for an answer, you can’t help but notice. Talk about awkward.
“Yes, I saw it. And I’m well aware just how impatient you are, Doctor. That really is a bad habit of yours, if you ask me. I always approve your projects before anyone else’s, don’t I?”
Grumbling a low sound, the man in the vaguely bird-like mask steps up next to you and then bypasses you completely, not even sparing you so much as a glance when he goes by. Much more interested in his bespectacled colleague sitting on the other side of the desk than he was in you, evidently.
And you got the sense that this was likely for the best.
“Then where is my mora, Pantalone? When might I expect it to reach my hand, hm? Today? In the next hour?”
“Relax. I’ve already got someone downstairs divvying up what you asked me for. Such large amounts can take time to procure and verify, as I’m sure you’re well aware. But really now, what’s got you in such a deplorable mood today? I very much doubt it has only to do with the funding.”
“No.” He bites out, through gnashing teeth by the sounds of it. Even you, someone who was not at all familiar with this person, could tell just from looking at his stiff back that he was indeed upset about something.
But somehow Regrator’s placcid guise remains steadily in place even when his acquaintance begins to slowly pace, back and forth, in front of the desk. Not at all unlike a caged animal.
“It’s that damn Columbina. Again! She’s been avoiding me lately, I’m sure of it. And we’d been having such a splendid time in each other's company too. I was even on my best behavior, if you can believe it.”
“I can’t.” Regrator helpfully supplies, even though he sounded to you just as unaffected by this information as he was by everything else. Amused, even.
Snorting a derisive laugh, the man starts to broaden the circumference of his pacing, refusing to stay confined to the area in front of the desk any longer. As if he simply couldn’t stand to remain in one spot while he relayed the full scope of his frustrations to the other man.
Rather surreptitiously, you start to back up and inch your way towards the door with every intention of making a silent, sneaky escape from the room.
“I really don’t get it, you know. One moment I’m giving her the tour of my lab and the next, poof. She’s disappeared. Spirited away, never to be seen again, except in fleeting glances while she haunts the corridors of the palace like a singing wraith. That seems to be all she ever does, don’t you think?”
At Regrator’s vague lilt of a hum, the man in the bird mask makes a sharp about-face and starts to retrace the wide half moon arc he’d already stomped.
“It really is ridiculous. I do nothing short of welcoming her in with open arms and this is the thanks I get.” He shakes his head, snorting a humorless laugh under his breath. “And don’t even get me started on that old, dying coot.”
“Now, Dottore,” the banker lightly admonishes. “That’s hardly a nice thing to say, is it?”
“Pah! Who cares for niceties when the topic is but a plain and simple truth? Death comes for every mortal, eventually, and that ancient relic is no exception. It is the one great equalizer in this world, after all. Ah, but I suppose not all of us have to worry about that, do we?”
You’re almost to the door now, your fingers itching with the overpowering urge to reach out and snatch the handle. It is only your curiosity at what was being discussed that makes you hesitate to take the chance while you have it, but you quickly come to regret that decision when this so-called Doctor aggressively turns on his heel again.
And this time he comes up short when he finds himself standing face to face with you. The noticeable jump of tension in his posture tells you he really hadn’t noticed you earlier, and your presence there in the office comes as something of a shock to him. Oh, you really should have gotten out of there instead of being nosy.
“And who is this?” He sharply emphasizes each individual word, punching the syllables out one by one as if they’ve personally wronged him.
“Mm? You’re still here? My dear, I thought you’d already left some time ago.”
You don’t think you believe that but you still find yourself growing uncomfortably warm under the Regrator’s archly inflected drawl. How embarrassing.
“I’m so sorry, my … my lords.” You stammer in a rush. “I didn’t mean to eavesdrop. I was just trying to excuse myself without interrupting your conversation.”
As if to prove that, you snatch your arm out to grab blindly at the door handle. It swings open with your jerky tug and you move to step out into the lobby, but Dottore is quicker than you expect. His gloved hand flies up to smack against the finely crafted wood, slamming it shut again, and you give a startled yelp of surprise when you snag your fingers back as if you’d been scalded.
“Oh, but let’s not be so hasty,” he croons at you, all solicitation now. In the blink of an eye every bit of that simmering, bubbling temper from a moment ago is completely gone, as if a switch in him had been flipped, and your bone dry throat works a nervous swallow as you watch him politely fold his arms behind the small of his back. “Stay and chat for a moment, won’t you? And what is your name, little mouse?”
You tell him with no shortage of apprehension or difficulty when your vocal chords almost refuse to cooperate.
“I see. How interesting. I didn’t even notice you standing there. Has anyone ever told you that you are very good at going unnoticed and hiding in plain sight?”
“Uh - uhm …”
“Our dear guest was just on her way.” Pantalone cuts in then. And although his tone of voice still remains as pleasantly accommodating as ever, there is now the prick of a pointed barb somewhere just underneath the surface to put you on even higher alert. Was he displeased with you?
“Is that so?” His mouth tugging into a rather bemused smirk, the Doctor tips his head to one side, studying you from a slightly different angle. He does not look at all unlike a curious carrion bird in the execution of that gesture.
“Oh, but what a pity that is. We could have had coffee brought in. I must admit, I’m quite curious to know what brought you before my esteemed colleague today. Judging by your attire, I’d say … you must be a commoner, is that right? And not a very well off one, if I had to guess. Then what business could you possibly have with the owner of the Northland Bank, hm?”
“Dottore.”
Wide eyes flickering in Regrator’s direction, you expect to see a disapproving frown upon his face or a bothered crease between his brows. Instead, you find him still smiling from his spot behind the desk, looking only mildly uncertain of his friend’s game. How curious.
How frightening.
You snap your gaze back up at the Doctor. “It — it was nothing, really. Just … wishful thinking, is all. I only wanted to try my luck here but I guess that was silly of me.”
“With what?”
“Oh. Um, a job. Work that I might be able to do for the Lord Harbinger in exchange for a few mora. I thought maybe he’d need extra hands here at the bank, or … or something.”
“Or something.” The Doctor echoes you, sounding hardly impressed and yet not exactly disinterested in your pathetic little sob story either, prompting Regrator to quietly clear his throat.
“Seeing as the bank is currently fully staffed and I have no need at the present time for any sort of housekeeping personnel, I’m afraid I’ve had to decline her well intentioned offer. While it does pain me to say it, I have a feeling that our little guest doesn’t have much to offer from an employer's perspective.”
Your cheeks positively blaze, hot enough to fry an egg on. Of course you’d known coming here was likely the most foolish thing you could possibly do, well aware of your own shortcomings as you were, but to hear him say it out loud and in so many words? It feels like you could just whither away and die on the spot.
“I - I’m so — s - so sorry, my lord. Please forgive me for my impudence today. It won’t happen again, I promise. I’ll just - -“
You’re already halfway through the motion of reaching for the door again when the masked man standing next to you abruptly grabs at your elbow, pinching and squeezing to once again halt your escape. Jumping at the contact, you jerk your head down to disbelievingly take in his gloved hand on your person. You’re so perplexed by this confounding turn of events that you don’t even think to pull away when he starts to nudge you in the direction of the two chairs situated in front of the desk.
“Come, come. There’s no need for that now, is there? We are all adults, after all.” The Doctor cooes saccharinely. It was obvious he found something funny here but you couldn’t even begin to guess at what that might be or what it had to do with you as you stiffly let him pull you where he wants. It’s not as if you had much of a choice in the matter. “Surely something can be arranged if we just put our heads together and think. Three minds are always more effective than one when it comes to problem solving, wouldn’t you agree?”
“I suppose so - -“
“Sit.” He commands, giving you a pointed shove in the direction of the nearest chair. The gravelly resonance in that one single word does more to convince you that it would be in your best interests to obey him than the insistence of his hands on you does, and you quickly drop into the indicated seat.
You’re admittedly glad for it, too, because you feel dangerously close to fainting dead away from fright as you nervously peer up at the Doctor. What did he want with you to make you stay like this? And were you even allowed to be sitting on any of the furniture in the first place? Something in the way Regrator not so idly taps his fingers against the mahogany grain of his desk leads you to believe that you were not.
How humiliating! You felt like a dog that was only being permitted to continue breaking the rules because there was company over, but that leniency would quickly disappear once you were alone with your master again.
“There. That’s much better, isn’t it? Try not to look so nervous though. I merely want to talk.” Looking really quite pleased with himself, the Doctor eases his body into the chair next to yours where he proceeds to get comfortable, crossing his legs and then resting his neatly folded hands atop the bend of his knee. “Well then, little mouse. Tell me. How old are you?”
You answer him truthfully, unsure why he would want to know, but it earns you a brief nod of approval all the same.
“Well, that’s not too bad, is it? In fact, I might dare to say that you’re in the prime of your life and you don’t even realize it. Have you any family?”
Something about that particular question strikes you as truly odd, and you shoot a helpless look at Regrator behind his desk. He is of absolutely no help to you though.
Evidently perfectly content to simply watch the scene unfold before him, he just sits there, smiling, alternating between rapping at the wood and fiddling with one of the rings on his right hand. He neither rushes to your rescue nor does he join in on his friend’s impromptu interrogation of you. An utterly neutral party, if you didn’t have your creeping suspicion to the contrary.
Turning back to the Doctor again, you sheepishly nod your head. “A mother and a father, but he’s … he hasn’t been home in nearly ten years. He was deployed with a regiment of Her Majesty’s forces to a foreign land when I was younger.”
Your answer seems to rouse Pantalone from his role of simple spectator, peering over at you now through the delicate lenses of his eyeglasses. “Deceased, then? Or …”
“Not to our knowledge. Not officially, anyway.”
“There’s no one else?” Dottore tacks on this time.
“No, my lord. It’s just us.”
“Then is a soldier's salary not enough to see two people sufficiently fed and clothed? If that is the case then we shall have to direct any further queries on this matter to Pantalone instead.” He says, grinning over at the man in question, who gives no indication of having even heard him, other than the faintest tightening of the muscles around his mouth.
It’s not hard to see that something about this situation is irritating him quite a bit. Whether that was you or his friend’s overly chatty persistence, you couldn’t be sure; but you self consciously rush to absolve him of any mistaken culpability before his mood can sour any further.
“No, t - that isn’t quite it. Truth be told, the payments we receive from the palace used to be more than enough to cover our living expenses but … recently my mother has taken ill and she can no longer do odd jobs here or there to supplement our income. Our savings lasted for a little while, and then all of the medicine and doctors visits quickly depleted whatever we had. That’s why I thought …”
“You thought?” The masked man presses when you hesitate to go on.
“Well, I — I guess my assumption was that working under one of Her Majesty’s Harbinger’s would earn me enough money to take care of her in her old age. Even if she doesn’t get better, I’d at least like her to be comfortable in her remaining time here. I need a reliable income for that, and plenty of it.”
The Doctor huffs an amused laugh under his breath, not even bothering to try and conceal it. “That’s very noble of you, isn’t it? The perfect, martyred daughter playing her role right to the last. They have a word for that, you know.”
You lift your head, curiosity once again getting the better of you. “They do?”
“Oh, yes. It’s called being a fool.”
Regrator heaves a quiet exhale at your startled jolt of surprise, giving his head a solemn shake now. “Dottore, that is no way to incline someone to your side when you plan on asking them for a fair exchange of services. I can guess at what you’re thinking, but … are you quite certain that it’s a good idea?”
“I don’t see why not. It sounds to me like she already has experience in caring for the sick and the elderly. It will just be replacing one with another. That seems like a reasonable trade off for a plenty sizable check, if you ask me.”
Slowly blinking away the sting of tears that have risen in the backs of your eyes, unbidden, you glance between the two of them with ever growing uncertainty. “What do you mean? Are you asking me to …”
Eagerly, the Doctor unfolds his legs and sits forward in his chair, leaning across to invade your space. You shirk back, frightened by his close proximity as much as the leering smirk you can see under the hooked beak of his featureless mask. But even then, even in the face of your skittish, nervous reaction, he remains ever undaunted in pursuit of his goal.
“That’s right. It might not be Pantalone pulling your purse strings, but if any old Harbinger would do then why not come work for me instead? I’ll certainly make it worth your while, little mouse. You see, I have an invalid of my own that needs tending to and I’m afraid I just don’t have the time or the patience to deal with it myself. In exchange, I will be happy to supply you with room and board, three meals a day and, of course, a hefty sum of mora to send back home to your mother. Doesn’t that sound perfectly agreeable to you? Hm?”
Sitting there in the exquisitely made wing backed chair that was singularly nicer than anything you’d ever owned in your life, you can hardly believe what it is you’re being offered. Surely your ears must have been playing tricks on you. It was too good to be true, and more than you had even dared to hope for when you’d set off on this ill begotten expedition to the Northland Bank. There had to be a catch though. Something he wasn’t telling you. Fortuitous luck like this didn’t come without its pitfalls, you knew that only all too well.
Your tongue darts out to nervously wet your lips as you search his blank mask for any signs that might point you in the right direction, to help you decide whether or not this was an insidious trap of some sort. It definitely felt like it was.
“That … is a very generous offer, my lord. Thank you. I’m not sure I deserve your kindness, but — may I ask a question first?”
He inclines his head rather graciously. “Go on.”
You steal another brief glance at Regrator, but it’s clear he still has no intention of bailing you out, leaving you to sink or to swim, so you press on. “I’d like to know a bit more about the job I would be doing, if I accepted your proposal. What would you expect of me? Is it … a parent of yours that needs taking care of?”
“Something like that.” Grumbling under his breath, the Doctor stands from his chair to resume his earlier pacing, but slower this time. An almost thoughtful gait to his step now. “Where to start? The, let’s say, patient in question is an eighty-four year old man with all of the usual problems one would expect at that age. Arthritic to the point of being half lame, he occasionally uses a wheelchair to get around although he isn’t quite to the point of being bed bound yet. Frankly, I hope it doesn’t ever come to that. He’s already cantankerous enough at the best of times.”
His boots thunking softly on the floorboards, he moves behind you and out of sight.
“And yet he expects us to see to his care just by virtue of our proximity to him. But as I’ve already said, I have other, far more important things to be doing with my time. Research to conduct, experiments to oversee. His soon to be palliative care is the least of my concern, yet he refuses to stop harping on and on about needing this or that at all hours of the day. If you should choose to accept this position then I would expect you to keep him preoccupied and out of our hair indefinitely. That means, little mouse, that you would have to be present and alert at a moment's notice. Any slacking off in these duties would result in very unfortunate consequences for you, indeed.”
You shudder faintly in your chair, effectively chilled to the bone by the total lack of regard or affection in which he speaks about this individual. He’d said it was something like a parent though, so you could only assume that they did not have a very good relationship. In truth, you almost felt bad for the old man without having even met him yet.
But then it hits you. The catch.
That sudden realization makes your stomach twist itself into a tight ball of knots as you spin around to peer back at the masked man, just as he comes up along the other side of you. It was hard to believe he’d ask something like this after you’d already told him about your own situation, your own circumstances.
“I’m sorry, my lord, but … I can’t leave my mother alone like that. I’m all she has. If I’m not there to take care of her no one else will and I’ll have done all this for nothing.”
“Oh?” He cocks his head to the side, looking for all the world like a raven inspecting a fresh corpse on the side of the road for signs of life. “And whatever is stopping you from hiring someone to see to her in your stead, silly girl?”
“I - I can’t afford that …”
“Ah, I see. You doubt the depths of my coffers, then, I take it?”
“Ahem.” Regrator cuts in at that moment, delicately clearing his throat of some imagined obstruction. “I believe that would be my coffers, Dottore, and you know full well that I at least like to be asked before you start making promises with my mora.”
The Doctor chuckles a faint sound of amusement in response. “Oh, don’t be like that, Pantalone. Can’t you see the poor thing is down on her luck and in need of our charitable assistance?”
“Yes, well,” the bespectacled man murmurs, shifting his attention to you now. “What my colleague is trying to say is that the question of whether or not something is affordable won’t be of any concern to you if you ultimately decide to work for him. You will be making more than enough to pay for a live-in nurse to move in at your home or to even relocate your mother into a permanent residence at one of the clinics if you would so wish it. To that end I have no problem giving you an advance payment so that you are able to make all the necessary arrangements prior to starting your work, if that is something you need to consider.”
“… really?”
“Yes, dear. Really.” Regrator says, holding back a laugh.
You just stare at him in utter disbelief for a painfully drawn out stretch of seconds before slowly glancing up at the Doctor again. It is not lost on you that something seems to have shifted between them inside this room. But he, too, appears to be completely serious and sincere. And try as you might to wrap your head around it you just don’t understand. Did this even really make any sense when you got right down to it?
“But — but why me? Why couldn’t you just as easily hire someone more qualified than I am to take care of your fath - -“
“That is not what he is.” Dottore cuts across you forcefully enough to make you snap your mouth shut. Then, more quietly, he says, “Not exactly, anyway.”
Breathing out a rather curt exhale, the Doctor moves to step around the back of your chair again, slowly dragging his gloved hand across the top of it this time as he goes by. “I do not expect you to truly get anything out of this explanation, but the fact of the matter is that the situation calls for the utmost discretion and secrecy. Although I cannot tell you the exact details of it right now, what I can say is that this matter concerns a Fatui Harbinger and is, therefore, a delicate topic indeed. We cannot have word of the comings and goings of Her Majesty’s forces leaking to the public.”
“It’s a point of security, my dear.” Regrator helpfully adds on. “You understand.”
You’re not so sure you do, but then the Doctor plops down in his abandoned seat and leans forward to brace his elbows upon his knees, clasped hands meeting between them. He looks … weary, you think. Like he’d already puzzled out every other possible avenue to resolve this issue as cleanly and neatly as possible only to come up regretfully short, time and time again. It makes you wonder, not for the first, what his relation could possibly be with this mysterious old man then, if he wouldn’t simply wipe his hands of it like he seemed to want.
“The problem, you see, is that hired nurses generally expect to go home at the end of the day,” he goes on. “Or eventually, at the very least. And they take information with them, intentionally or not. They talk and they gossip, letting things slip. But we can’t just sequester someone like that away from the rest of the world, because they would invariably have people looking for them. Either family or employers, coworkers. Someone who might start asking questions. If the tracks then lead any subsequent investigations directly to the doorstep of a Harbinger …”
The Doctor solemnly shakes his head, and you finally start to understand.
“So you figured I was your best bet because the only one who might question my whereabouts is my mother, and she’s …” You’re reluctant to say it, but he nods his agreement all the same. “I see. But it sounds like I won’t have much freedom of movement, if you’re that worried about possible leaks getting out. I am sorry, my lord, but I still don’t think I can take on this responsibility.”
“Not even if it could potentially save your mother’s life?”
You snap your head around to look over at Regrator who pins you in place with a not unkind smile.
“What?”
“Forgive me for butting in, it’s just … with the amount of mora you would be making from this position you could easily afford to hire the best physicians Snezhnaya has to offer. Sure, you might lose out on a couple of months with your mother, or even a year or two, depending on how the hands of fate choose to fall. But if she could be cured in that time then you would be free to enjoy each other's company in relative comfort once the job is completed.”
Your mind positively reels at this information. Was that truly possible? An equivalent trade of some of your time for more of hers? Did you even dare to believe it?
“I guess I didn’t really think of it like that, but … is the situation really that imperative, my lord? I - I mean, not to be rude, but is your fa - - your patient that much on borrowed time?”
The Doctor tilts his face towards you, sending you a look that is no less scathing despite the barrier of his mask standing in the way. “He will be eighty-five years old soon. What do you think? I can’t imagine he has all that many more years in him, although I suppose we would only be so lucky if he doesn’t stubbornly cling to life with everything he’s got.”
You’re more than a little aghast at how he speaks of this man, but even that is not enough to douse the flickering, hopeful flame that ignites in your heart. It wasn’t what you had set out to do, far from it, and yet you couldn’t conceive of a better outcome, especially when Regrator had been so quick to dismiss your entreaty of him.
It was, of course, hard to believe that this prickly individual in the bird mask would be your savior over the arguably polite, handsome banker, and yet that seems to be exactly how things have turned out for you. Even if it was only a slim chance at extending your mothers life, perhaps just long enough for you to find some closure for her regarding the disappearance of your father, you knew that this was an opportunity you couldn’t afford to pass up. And besides that, if the Doctor was half as unsympathetic towards the old man as he was when talking about him in front of a complete stranger, then you could only surmise that your presence might be the single source of kindness allotted to him in his final days. You weren’t making this decision because of that, but it is something you take into consideration.
“Alright, then,” you say at last, shocked at yourself for even considering going through with it. “I’m listening. How much are you going to pay me, so that I know what sort of arrangements to make for my mother? And when would you like me to start?”
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
Dear mama,
Today, I met old man Zandik for the first time. He is quite the interesting character! I cannot tell you much of my current situation or my employer, of course, and I’m sure this and any future letters to you will be thoroughly inspected before delivery to ensure that nothing of import slips through. I don’t think this much should hurt anything though, or at least I hope it doesn’t.
But I don’t want you to worry about me or wonder how I’m doing, so I’ve decided it would be in both our best interests to send you periodic updates addressed to your room at the hospital while I’m away. I pray that this, the first of what is sure to be many letters, finds you well. Tell me, are the nurses being kind to you? Has there been any change at all in your health? I know you don’t like to be fussed over but please try not to give the staff there a hard time. They’re only trying to help you, just as I am doing my best to help you in whatever way that I can.
Once I am finished with this job I promise I’ll come get you and we’ll go on a nice, long trip together!
Oh, but let me tell you a little about old man Zandik. I suppose I should start calling him ‘Master’ now?
He turned out to be just as advanced in his later years as his associate claimed him to be and, strangely enough, this set any of my lingering doubts regarding his story to rest. I call the man I met at the Northland Bank an associate because … well, it’s a little hard to explain. Actually, I’m not quite sure I even understand it myself. This place is rather disconcerting in that regard, and sometimes it can be exceedingly difficult to make sense of the things I hear or see.
Luckily, though, Master Zandik is a very grounding presence in his own strange way. To some extent he feels more real than the one in the mask, despite the fact that he did not seem particularly happy to see me standing there with his associate. He even tried to send me away at first, which I am sure you can imagine came as quite the shock! I thought I might pass out right then and there from embarrassment, thinking that there had been some sort of mistake. But the other man insisted that everything was already in order for me to begin my duties and after stressing to him that the advanced payment had already been delivered (and spent!) Zandik reluctantly gave in. I’m not entirely sure what their relation is to cause so much tension between them, but we occupied the rest of the afternoon with him showing me around his laboratory and telling me all about the things inside it.
Yes, you read that right. A laboratory, mama! I’ve been employed in the service of a real scientist who works for Her Majesty, and who has accomplished quite a lot according to him. It is just as I told you, then, when I had to leave you at the hospital. So you see, there is nothing at all for you to fret about.
But back to Master Zandik. Although he certainly wasn’t happy with me in the beginning he warmed up quickly enough. Honestly, I think he was just happy to be shown an interest in his work and to spend time around someone other than himself. In another life he might even have been a teacher, a celebrated professor at an equally venerated university. He seemed to rather enjoy explaining things to me despite the fact that I could hardly keep up with much of what he said.
I suppose that, in a way, this was likely what the man in the mask meant when he said that he didn’t have time to take care of Master Zandik himself. The old man is sharp for his age and far more intelligent than I would have thought it possible for any one person to be, but he also seems a bit lonely. Restless in his advancing age. I’m not sure if my presence here or any amount of interest in his work will be enough to ward off the causal effects of his twilight years, but I’m certainly going to do my best. For your sake as much as his.
He isn’t nearly as sweet or kindhearted as you are, mama, but I think the two of you would get along splendidly. Something about him almost reminds me of papa. It would have been nice if I’d been able to take care of him in his old age, too. Perhaps, then, Master Zandik will be my temporary substitute in the meantime. I’ll get some good practice in, at least!
Oh, but I do miss you so. I hope you’ll write me back soon. I'm ashamed to admit it, but it’s a little unnerving being away from home like this. Sometimes I hear strange sounds off in the distance and Master Zandik does not like to let me far out of his sight, so I cannot even investigate the source to put my mind at ease. Her Majesty willing, it is nothing to worry about though.
Until next time,
With love
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
It is undoubtedly something to worry about, you decide with no shortage of fast mounting apprehension.
In fact, there were a great many things you should be worried about and right at the top of that list was the identity of the mysterious masked person who seemed to come and go with all of the pomp and circumstance of a wandering specter. That strange noise you kept hearing didn’t even crack the top five.
It was alarming though, causing your blood pressure spike and your heart to race every time you caught it coming from somewhere not that far off in the distance. But you never seemed to get any closer to it no matter where you happened to be standing, nor could you pinpoint which direction it was coming from. And worst of all, Zandik did not seem to even notice it. If anything, your startled reactions appeared to bother him far more than anything else did.
“And what’s got you so spooked this time?” He grumbles, carefully setting his coffee cup down on its matching saucer with a faint clink from the delicate glass. “Looks like you’ve seen a ghoul passing by, if you ask me.”
You’re not so sure that’s an entirely inaccurate statement, all things considered, and you nervously turn away from your dusting to face him. “Do you really not hear it? What is that?”
“Hm?” Tilting his head slightly, Zandik carefully listens for a long moment. The two of you are in his library, perfectly still and silent save for the far off noise that has plagued you since you first arrived here.
It always sounded off at random intervals throughout the day with no rhyme or reason that you could discern, ensuring it always caught you unawares and ill prepared. Just yesterday you’d nearly dumped boiling water all down your front from jumping so hard at the unexpected shrill.
At length, he finally gives his head a shake. “I don’t hear anything. You’re imagining it.”
“I really don’t think I am.” You insist, but it’s weak and unsure. Not exactly convinced of your own convictions when this place was starting to make you feel crazy.
You’d been here for about a month now and for the most part the work wasn’t anything terrible. You liked Zandik well enough, even if he was occasionally short with you and not quite as easy to please as the letter you’d sent to your mother had implied. Sure, it was wrong to fib or stretch the truth, but you hadn’t wanted her to worry about you when she should have been worrying about herself.
For the most part you just kept the old man company. Waking him every morning, helping him get dressed and then handing him his cane, when he felt up for it, so you could accompany him down to the lab he so enjoyed dawdling in or, like today, the library. You take your meals together, sit and read together, when time permits, and enjoy the peaceful stillness of the eerily quiet, sprawling mansion together. Sometimes he snaps at you, pinches your thigh to get your attention or chides you for imagined slights against his person, but that was usually the worst of it.
The one in the bird mask was decidedly much worse and he often appeared without warning, materializing out of some dark nook or cranny to scare you half to death. Even if he were not inclined to such sneaking around, though, you were still likely to have found his presence there with you and the old man disconcerting.
Because you’d realized quite immediately upon being introduced to Zandik that something was not right here. They were very much alike, those two, with the same hair (although the older’s had started to thin and to dull in color) and their voices were very much the same as well (although the younger’s was more crisp and clear) but you couldn’t quite put your finger on what was off between them. At first you’d thought the masked one had simply lied to you, and they were in fact father and son despite what he’d said to the contrary. And yet …
Watching them interact gave you the impression that this wasn’t likely to be the correct answer either. They were almost like mirror images of one another, in a way, and Zandik was only marginally easier to deal with by simple virtue of the fact that he was reliant on you to take care of many everyday, mundane tasks for him. If he had been even half as spry and independent as his younger counterpart, you were sure you would have been in a world of trouble.
Anxiously twisting the feather duster in your hands now, you stand there and listen to the distant grating, gnashing, grinding sound that seems as if it is coming from everywhere and somehow nowhere all at once. It gave you the impression of metal biting into metal, tearing and ripping. Crushing. You couldn’t believe he didn’t hear that.
Eventually lifting his head again, Zandik now peers over at you with a scowl deepening the wrinkles around his mouth. “Is your imagination really that distracting? Those bookshelves aren’t going to dust themselves, you know.”
“It is not my imagination.” You argue, earning yourself a humorless scoff from him.
“Then what else could it be? My hearing hasn’t gotten that bad yet. If I can make out the scurrying of rats down in the cellar — and trust me, I most assuredly can — then surely I would also hear this mysterious noise you speak of.”
Grumbling something unkind under his breath, Zandik settles deeper into his chair before going on. “I don’t know where he found you at – some barren street corner, I would imagine. But I feel the need to once again voice my doubts concerning this arrangement. An empty headed, flighty little girl does not seem the best candidate for watching after an old man, if you want my opinion.”
“I am not a little girl.” You huff, taking great offense to that.
“Well, you certainly look like one to me.”
Cheeks growing warm, you have to bite your tongue to stop the impulse to argue any further with him. He was your employer, after all, and he also wasn’t necessarily wrong. To an eighty-four year old you probably did seem not much unlike a child to him. But that didn’t mean you appreciated being talked to like one, and for an uncomfortably long moment terse silence claims the room with only that horrible sound to fill the empty space.
And then, it stops.
As suddenly as it started, it recedes back into the void of nothingness and you slowly exhale your great relief. Watching you carefully, Zandik observes the way your shoulders gradually relax and how the tension drains out of your body before he similarly sighs a heavy, world weary breath out through his nose.
“Come here, silly girl. Let me see you. Don’t be frightened.”
Still clutching the feather duster, you heed his summons and obediently, albeit anxiously, step across the room to come up beside him.
He’d felt well enough today to forgo the wheelchair he sometimes needed to get around with when his arthritis was bothering him, relying on only his cane to help him shuffle down to the library with you in tow. As such, he is sitting in a comfortably cushioned, high backed chair in front of a cluttered desk littered with books and papers, a seemingly random pair of forceps and an empty beaker, an assortment of pens and inkwells scattered about the surface. You weren’t sure what he was working on, if he was working on anything at all and not simply wiling away the time. You probably wouldn’t have understood much of it even if you’d asked him, though. Zandik’s mind was something far beyond your scope of comprehension even in his old age.
Halting a respectful distance from the arm of his chair, you neatly fold your hands in front of you over the white apron that trails down your front. “Yes, Master?”
Saying nothing, Zandik reaches out to firmly grab hold of your fingers with his mouth pressed in a tight line. You give a small jolt, flushing rather profusely as he tugs, nudging you to step closer to him. The gesture isn’t exactly gentle but it’s not aggressive, either. Just — demanding. And maybe a bit condescending, the way he steers you into place as if you should have innately understood where he wanted you to be.
Evidently satisfied only when you can feel the bulk of the skirt pushing in on his chair, he releases you and lets his hand drop to the arm rest. Then he turns his attention towards the dusty old book spread open before him, disregarding you completely, and still without uttering so much as a single word in your direction.
To your surprise it looks like he’s going to ignore you now that you’re standing beside him, his attention fixed on the hefty tome. He neither says or indicates anything to signal what he wants, so you simply stand there, waiting and at attention.
Then you feel it.
That same hand almost inconspicuously touches the back of your knee, tickling you ever so faintly when he traces your stockings upward to then slip underneath the hem of your skirt. You go ramrod stiff, shuddering and breaking out into gooseflesh as you stamp down the urge to pull away from him. This was not a unique instance of him putting his hands on you, but you were no more used to it now than the first time it happened.
“W - what are you doing? Sir?”
Zandik clicks his tongue, still not even bothering to look up when he responds. “What does it look like I’m doing? Don’t be daft, girl.”
Pursing your lips, you stand there stiff as a board while he slowly works his way higher and higher up the back of your thigh. So grumpy.
You’d nearly whirled around and slapped him across the face the first time he’d done something like this, mere days after being introduced. At the onset you’d thought he was merely trying to scare you away, hoping to send you packing with complaints of harassment and unfavorable work conditions, but you’d assured yourself that you were made of tougher stuff than that.
He’d persisted though, even after a few weeks had gone by, and now you weren’t so sure that he wasn’t just taking advantage of his age and his position of authority to feel you up whenever the mood struck him.
Sometimes it was like this; touching your exposed legs where the housekeeping uniform given to you by the man in the mask didn’t reach down far enough to protect you from his wandering fingers. Other times he’d wait until you were close enough, leaning forward to set his coffee in front of him or picking up a book he’d asked to have taken away, to reach up and innocuously brush his knuckles across your chest. You didn’t like it one bit, but you always thought of your mother in these situations to remind yourself what was at stake here. For her sake, you would put up with just about anything.
But this time Zandik’s searching fingers are bolder than usual, evidently no longer content with simply touching the parts of you that could be misconstrued as innocent or accidental, if you chose to interpret them that way. This time, he brushes right over the top edge of your stockings, taking a moment to inspect the little metal clasps holding them in place before reaching higher still.
Your throat suddenly seems to be obstructed with something that feels very much like a boulder, lodged and unbudging, as he now feels along bare skin. His fingers are cold and bony, trembling ever so slightly from the effects of aging, not nerves. He’s perfectly confident, in fact, when he unhesitatingly finds the seam of your panties a moment later and proceeds to almost possessively curl those long, dexterous digits around the pudge of your quim to make you give a great jolt of surprise.
“M - master Zandik! What - -!”
“Oh, just hush, you idiot. I’m not hurting you, am I? Eh? No, I didn’t think so. Now stop looking at me like that and focus on this instead of those phantom noises you think you hear.”
“But … but …”
Swaying somewhat unsteadily there on your feet, you screw your eyes shut with a low whimper. You’d never had someone touch you like this before and you aren’t sure what to make of any of it.
On one hand, you try to reason with yourself, he was right in that he wasn’t causing you any harm. It didn’t hurt, at the very least. But on the other it was undoubtedly wrong for him to be helping himself to your body like this. Not only because you were employer and employee, master and servant, and this broke the unspoken understanding between those respective roles, your stations in life. But also because of the great difference in age.
He was old enough to be your grandfather, for crying out loud!
You feel more than a smidge bitter about that, and you silently curse him in your head while he nudges the hand between your legs with a deliberate motion that makes his fingers press up into you. The sensation of fleshy lips shifting under the pressure, forced to part for him, quickly has you sucking in a ragged breath that painfully rakes on the way down.
“W - what do you mean to do, sir?” You warble out, starting to squirm on your feet beside him. Impulsively, you reach behind you with one hand to try and shove the back of your dress down but it is simply no use. His arm remains as uncompromising as ever. “Is this really necessary? I’m s - sorry if I … displeased you.”
“Nonsense. You did nothing of the sort.” He grumbles, the brunt of his focus remaining on the book laid out on the desk while the gesture of his hand seems akin to a mere afterthought.
“Then why - -“
“Gods, girl. Do you ever stop asking questions? Ever since you came here you’ve been wound tighter than a jack spring, always jumping and scaring at the slightest noise. I’ll have you know that this is precisely why I tried to tell that bastard fool you weren’t needed here.” Snorting a derisive sound, Zandik reaches for the pen sitting next to the book with his right hand.
Leaving the other to busy between your legs, he jots down some notation or another that you can’t quite decipher when the insistent rubbing of his fingers was beginning to make you feel so very warm. Stuffy, and increasingly stifled.
“What’s done is already done though, and I suppose you’re here to stay.” He goes on, softening the tone of his voice by only some small margin. “The least you could do is let me tend to you a little bit without all this fuss. If it helps, you can try to think of it as being in exchange for always taking decent enough care of me. You do make a rather agreeable pot of coffee, I have to admit.”
Blinking back the sting of unshed tears from your eyes, you peer down at him in question but, still, he won’t look up at you.
Was this supposed to be some sort of reward then? His way of praising you for a month’s worth of hard work rendered, or perhaps as a misguided way of soothing your jittery nerves. That seemed rather backwards to you and you weren’t sure how that could possibly make any sense in his mind, but …
The growing warmth that slowly settles and spreads across your pussy is frustratingly persuasive. It fogs your brain, making it more and more difficult to think straight even as you somewhat awkwardly shift around on your heels, torn between skittering away from his attentions or nudging into it. In truth you hadn’t given much thought at all to the ways in which a man might someday touch you but this was far too wrong for you to reconcile any of it in your mind. He shouldn’t have been doing this to you.
And you certainly should not have been enjoying it. Not even a little bit.
And yet as the seconds continue to tick by, dutifully counted off by the stoic facade of the grandfather clock against the adjacent wall, that’s exactly how your body appears to be responding to him as well as his ministrations. With pleasure, and the eager, excessive slick of your youth. You can feel it gathering along the crease, steadily building up in abundance until it feels like it’s oozing out of you to stick to the cotton of your panties. Dampening, clinging, smearing wetly with every pass of his twitching fingers. Your cunt had never felt as terribly hot as it does now.
The sensation is overpowering and potent enough that when he finally gives his hand a deliberate twist, locating the outer edge of the gusset and rudely shoving the thin material aside, it very nearly comes as a relief. You can’t help but shudder though, whimpering at the cool brush of wafting air that caresses over your thoroughly swollen sex to make your posture waver.
Almost unconsciously you find yourself tipping forward, the weight of your upper body too much for your legs to support when your lower half was buzzing, tingling. Turning into molten honey that threatens to drip out onto the floor underneath you.
Without warning, Zandik’s wizened fingertips slip inside the tight space between flesh and cotton, where he proceeds to drag a harsh line through your weeping slit. You involuntarily jolt at the feeling, and when he chuckles a brief sound in the same heartbeat you can’t be sure if it’s in response to your reaction or the state of arousal he’s found you in. Perhaps it was even both.
“Interesting. Looks to me like you’re much more eager than you want to let on. Not exactly the pure, innocent maiden you’d have me believe you are, hm?”
You have a strong mind to correct him on that. To insist that it is only the precise expertise of his fingers and the keen application he applies to your cunt that has made such a mess of you, and not any fault of your own. But you can’t seem to manage it, having neither the oxygen nor the remaining mental capacity to follow through on the impulse. All you can do is stand there, softly panting, while his digits spear through delicate creases and satin inner folds in search of the hidden pearl at the apex of your slit.
And you know the exact moment he finds it just as well as he does, because you violently twitch so hard your legs almost give out on the spot. One of your hands blindly flies out to slam against the top of the desk in an attempt to restore your balance but it’s no use. Especially not when Zandik sets in to rub over that sensitive spot, drawing tight circles into the pulsing, pinprick nerve cluster. The motion of his hand was at once tender and demanding at the same time.
Entirely against your will, you let loose a low, faltering sound of rapidly budding ecstasy, unable to hold it back even if you’d tried. The fingers on your pussy give an excited little jump in response to the sound before attacking you with even greater fervor than before. That delicate button, swollen and tender, grinds under the pressure of his attention, dragging against the worn pads of his digits.
You felt like you were drunkenly spinning through a kaleidoscopic rush of sensation unlike anything you’d ever experienced before. Inebriated and loopy, soaring higher and higher towards the culminative end of your own consciousness. You couldn’t breathe, couldn’t think. You felt like you were going to cry; great big, gasping sobs that would wrack you straight down to the bone. You were going to die here in this library. You were going to —
“Aah - aaugghhn! M - master Zandik!”
A harsh, ragged intake of air is all you manage after that rattling plea, feeling as if you were about to tip right over the precipice into some great, gaping maw of absolution.
But you don’t quite make it that far, hovering poised and shaking for the pin to drop when the door on the opposite side of the room abruptly wrenches open.
You hear an unwelcomingly familiar voice call out, “is this where you are?” and you wrench yourself upright so fast you nearly give yourself whiplash.
Zandik, too, reacts with a startled little jerk, quickly withdrawing his hand from the inside of your panties just in time for the man in the bird mask to appear in the doorway. One or both of you must look guilty as hell, though, because he pauses there to consideringly observe the scene he’s just walked in on.
“Am I interrupting something?” He drawls at length, quiet and pointed with barbed wire.
“N - no, my lord. I was just — checking if master Zandik needed a refill on his coffee. That’s all.”
Heaving another terse exhale, the old man lifts his hand — the one that had just been between your legs, you realize with a great deal of mortified horror — to idly gesture the other inside. “A top off sounds just fine. What do you want? I hope you’re not bringing me another caretaker I didn’t want or ask for.”
“Oh, don’t be like that.” The Doctor croons, the switch in him flipping just like that.
You find this aspect of him perhaps most disconcerting of all, and you gratefully turn away to retrieve the silver carafe you’d left sitting by the window when he moves to step through the door.
“Just because you haven’t realized it yet, that doesn’t mean you don’t need someone around who can fully devote all of their attention to your long list of needs. You are, after all, getting older with each and every passing day, Zandik. The aches and ailments are only going to continue to accumulate with time. I think you know that just as well as I do.”
“You have a working pair of hands, don’t you? Or is that mouth of yours the only thing that works?”
“It’s not my responsibility.” He volleys back, keeping his tone light and airy. Playful, almost, or so you might think if you didn’t already know him better than that.
Keeping your head down so as not to draw any unwanted attention to yourself, you cautiously make your way back over to Zandik’s side where you lean across his shoulder to refill the cup on the table. He’s back to ignoring your presence though, which is just fine with you, and you quickly skitter away when the Doctor steps up to the other side of the desk without giving you so much as a second glance. And thank Her Majesty for that small mercy!
Retreating back some distance to one of the tall bookshelves, you settle in to resume your earlier dusting. Or pretend to, anyway.
You’d picked up very early on that it was best to keep yourself busy and preoccupied while they had their discussions, but that didn’t mean you weren’t going to stay well within earshot to listen. It was one of the good things about being able to make yourself so small and unobtrusive that you just sort of blended right in with the scenery, and likely why the Doctor had set his machinations on you that day in the bank. You were easy to overlook when he had far more important things to be dealing with.
“You say it’s not your responsibility.” Zandik finally grumbles, sounding as if he was still turning that statement over in his head. “As if you should even have the luxury of choice in the matter.”
“It’s not. It really isn’t.” The Doctor insists. “But let’s put that aside for now. I have some interesting news to share with you, if you’d like to know what that most impulsive segment of yours has been up to recently.”
Ever so slowly, you turn your head to better angle your ear towards the desk. Segments. You’d heard that word a few times now over the course of your stay here, but you had no idea what it meant or what it might refer to. You were curious though, and as always that curiosity of yours tended to get you into trouble. This was clearly not a conversation you should have been privy to, and yet here you were.
Perhaps thinking the exact same thing, Zandik uneasily shifts in his chair. “And what might that be? I trust it must be good if you went to the trouble of tracking me down.”
The Doctor says something about Sumeru, then, something that makes absolutely no sense to you. There’s an eager lilt in his voice when he talks about it though, calling it lost technology and forbidden research, unexpected breakthroughs. You find that a little odd, admittedly, because you were very much under the impression that he worked directly under the Tsaritsa. Why would she forbid something that one of her loyal subjects was working on?
Unless … it was not she who had forbidden it?
It’s hard to imagine that anyone or anything’s authority would trump that of Her Majesty’s. Even the other gods in neighboring nations seemed pale in comparison to her splendor, her heavy handed rule of law, but that seemed to be exactly what they were talking about.
Unfortunately the subject is changed too quickly for you to glean much of anything from it, moving away from those far more interesting tidbits to focus instead on minute details and data, probability statistics of success or failure, resource management and funding arrangements. It’s all very vague in your mind. Amorphous and shapeless without any basis of understanding to contextualize any of it. They may as well have been speaking a different language and it doesn’t take long for you to mentally tune them out in favor of revisiting that bizarre exchange with Zandik.
It was strange, wasn’t it, for him to overstep like that? Even by his own standards, that had been a bit much. And your pussy was still soaking wet with the evidence of his ambitious intents upon you, reminding you just how sticky and uncomfortably slick you were with every little shift of your body. Against your better judgments, you find that you ache terribly for the unfulfilled thrill of culmination that had been mercilessly ripped from you even as you silently rebuke it in the same breath.
You felt sick and slimy just thinking about him touching you as he had, angry at your own helplessness to do anything to stop it from happening. But you also couldn’t ignore the tight, wanting knot in your loins, the powerfully compelling urge to offer your cunt up to the perusal of his hands again. It had felt nice, you’re beyond ashamed to realize. Good, in a way that felt like it could all too easily become addicting if you weren’t careful.
Had Zandik been even just thirty years younger you probably would have been wrestling with quite the moral conundrum right now. He is not, though, and so your decision was an easy one to make. You just couldn’t afford to get involved with someone that many decades your senior and whose position in the social hierarchy far outclassed yours. Simply entertaining the notion was in itself craven and perverted.
But if he were to be the one who initiated it again … it’s not as if you could really tell your employer ‘no’, could you?
These contradictory and confusing thoughts whirl about inside your head over the next half hour or so while the two of them go back and forth over this or that and the other. They aren’t exactly on friendly terms, given the sharp barbs they regularly exchange between them, apparently unable to stop themselves from taking jabs at pride and ego. They were barely even cordial, in fact.
But whatever is bubbling beneath the surface does not reach its boiling point today, and your ears prick back into focus when you hear the Doctor start to make the usual indications that he was to take his leave.
You’re not sure if you should be happy about that or not, hand tightening on the useless feather duster you’d all but forgotten you were holding. You certainly had not used it for its intended purpose at any time since Zandik first called you to his side.
But between your nosy interest in their discussion and the dripping wet cunt between your legs, you’d been quite distracted from your duties. Now, however, you jump to get back to your dusting while you listen to heavy boots moving across the floor. A shuffling turn, a redistribution of weight, the purposeful thunk of a heel landing squarely on old wood with an accompanying low creak.
And then gloved hands are looping around you from behind, very nearly making you jump out of your skin when they anchor around your waist without warning. Heart lodging in your throat, you whip your head around to look back at the featureless mask hovering just over your shoulder.
“M - m - my lord?” You squeak in fright.
“How adorable. But don’t pretend to be surprised now, little mouse. I know full well that you were listening to our conversation with nothing short of rapt fascination, weren’t you?” The Doctor croons, clearly amused by that simple audacity rather than enraged by it like you otherwise might have thought him to be.
“You … you knew? But you kept talking anyway?”
“Why, of course. It’s not as if there’s anything you can do with this information, is there? The strict stipulations of our arrangement were made for a very good reason, you know. And besides … you’ve been standing in this exact spot the entire time, not doing much of anything that I would even begin to call productive. You weren’t exactly trying to hide it.”
You flinch at his pointed accusation, cheeks flooding with embarrassed heat. The Doctor merely chuckles a faint sound at your reaction though, neither chiding you for your indiscretions or punishing you for them. He really couldn’t care about you eavesdropping, then. Clearly quite confident that you would find no easy way to leak what you’ve heard to the outside world for as long as you were trapped here inside this sprawling, resoundingly empty manor home.
Regrettably for you, he was likely correct about that.
“I’ll try to be sneakier about it next time.” You promise him, earning another quiet snort of amusement. “In the meantime, was there anything I could help you with, sir? Your hands …”
He gives your waist a tight squeeze at the reminder, blocky fingers digging deep into lovehandles for a brief moment to make you squirm. You couldn’t figure out what their fascination was with touching you so indecorously like this, and you whimper softly at the sharp little jabs of discomfort that spark through you.
The Doctor doesn’t release his hold though, not even when you nervously rock forward as if to slip out of his grasp and flee. His fingers are like iron manacles where they hold you to the spot, demanding compliance and promising to take it by force should you get any bright ideas about fighting him. Those hands were not unlike Zandik’s in that sense, but somehow even more ruthless. Unsympathetic.
“Ooh, don’t be like that. I just thought to check in on you, that’s all.” He coos when he leans closer, hunching over you now as if to swallow you up in a final, damning rustle of black bird feathers. “It’s just as I thought, though. You’ve taken to this assignment exceptionally well by the looks of things. I guess you really were the best candidate for the job after all.”
“T - … thank you for the compliment, my lord.”
“Think nothing of it. And there will be plenty more where that came from if you continue to meet my expectations of you.” Dropping his voice to a whisper, somehow sultry as the night and menacing as a bared-fang hiss at the same time, he goes on. “You’ve been taking awfully good care of that decrepit old wretch, haven’t you? And you have my immense thanks for that, of course. I do wonder though how I should show my appreciation for all of your hard work so far …”
With that vaguely ominous murmur, his hands slide low to deliberately smooth over your hips and across your thighs in a sudden rush of contact that makes you gasp. But there’s no time to stop it when everything happens much too fast for you to even comprehend that it’s happening at all.
One moment he’s taking big, wrenching handfuls of the skirt, gathering it in his fists, and the next he’s got the bulk of the material hiked up around your stomach. You jolt at the abrupt exposure of your lower half, head snapping down to watch the Doctor snake one arm around you and trap the material in place. This allows him to reach back down with the other where he’s now free to palm at your underwear in a too tight squeeze that has you twisting in his hold, biting your tongue to stop the yelp that tries to force its way out.
You couldn’t believe he would do this when Zandik was still sitting just behind the two of you at the desk. Was he insane?
“My, my, isn’t this an interesting discovery. Your panties are damp, little mouse. I wonder what could possibly be the cause of that.”
Turning your face away from him to fix upon the opposite wall instead, you blindly reach down and clamp your fingers around the wrist between your legs. But it’s no use. He’s as unbudging as a brick wall against you. Even trying to squeeze him out with your thighs doesn’t do you any good.
“S - stop that! Let go of me!” You hiss viciously under your breath, practically spitting at him like a viper.
“What, you’re not interested?” He laughs against your temple to send hot breath dancing across your skin, and you respond by trembling fiercely in his hold. “Well, that seems a little backwards if you ask me. Do you really think that old fool can give you something I can’t? Frankly, my dear, I’m not even sure if he can still get it up.”
You give him a sharp, incredulous look, nearly taking your own eye out on the pointy beak of his mask, but all he does is laugh in response.
“Don’t look at me like that. You’re welcome to do whatever you want, within reason. I’m certainly not going to stop you, and far be it that I would try to prohibit the pursuit of scientific discovery if you’d like to find out for yourself. I’m just saying that the statistical odds aren’t exactly stacked in your favor. But on the off chance that he isn’t completely impotent … I can still promise you that I would take much better care of you than he ever could.”
As if in proof of that decree, the Doctor gives his probing hand a purposeful twist, snagging the edge of the fabric with the crook of his fingers. Without a single ounce of regard for how you might feel about it, he peels your underwear aside to once again expose your weeping slit to the cool air in the library. It makes you realize anew just how swollen and slick your pussy is, shaking with a plaintive arch of your spine as you seethe through your teeth.
Ever unconcerned with silly notions such as time or place, even potential audiences, Dottore delves two of those gloved digits inside the pudgy grip of your labia. He is nothing like Zandik in the way he paws at you now, ignoring your tingling clitoris entirely in favor of locating your dripping opening instead. And when he finds it easily enough by following the source of all that slippery discharge to its wellspring, he doesn’t even hesitate to thrust his fingers inside.
The sudden breach of your body, this unexpected penetration, has you frantically rising up on your tip toes in a desperate bid to escape it. You’re trapped in his arms though, with nowhere to run, and you frantically drop the feather duster to the sound of a dull clatter against the floor so you can slap that hand over your mouth instead. It takes everything you have not to shriek in distress and rising panic, the sting of fresh, salty tears making your vision blur.
It wasn’t just the stretch to your hitherto untested passage, the deep ache that it leaves in you. These things alone would have been more than enough to have you sobbing, lamenting your own ruin in this drafty place. But what truly makes your throat cinch shut, making it impossible to breathe, for your stomach to wrench so violently you think you might really faint dead away, is how readily your cunt accepts the violation.
You’re too wet, too puffy and swollen to keep him out, and the Doctor is able to freely impale you on those long, searching digits straight up to the second joint with hardly any effort at all to show for it. Zandik’s patient, coaxing caresses over that long stretch of minutes had done its job and done it exceptionally well. You sway in the Doctor’s hold, dizzy and reeling, as you throb around the intrusion, wheezing nauseatingly into your palm.
“Oh? What’s this now?”
Drawling a slow, reverberating chuckle, he starts to worm deeper into you, forcing your tight inner sleeve to accommodate his presence within. It’s an uncomfortably vice-like fit, to be sure, when your constricting passage squeezes around his fingers as if to strangle them. And yet that does absolutely nothing to daunt his tireless pursuit of reaching as far into your person as he can go, singlemindedly bullying your tender pussy open one malicious inch at a time.
Finally, he slides the rest of the way home with one last, insidious wriggle of those astute digits, a messy click sounding from your cunt when his knuckles press into you hard. The foreign sensation of being stuffed full like this nearly has your eyes rolling back in their sockets even as you awkwardly shift to lessen some of the pressure. It’s a futile endeavor, though. There’s no escaping his clutches like this, no way to lift yourself off of his hand when he has you stuck in place by your pussy. All you can manage is to stiffly writhe against him, the heels of your little buckled shoes shuffling a disoriented tempo against the floor in your desperate search for balance atop the spear of his fingers.
“You took that surprisingly well,” he murmurs, directly into your ear, so close that you can feel his coarse lips brushing the outer shell. It comes as a small, distant relief that he sounds so pleased with you, evidently satisfied by the reluctant acquiescence of your body. You could only hope that this meant he wouldn’t try to force you to bend any further than he already had.
“And you didn’t even scream either. Not that it would have done you any good though. I’m sure you understand perfectly well by now that no one will be coming to your rescue here, hm? But that’s just as well, darling mouse. I do so detest the sound of wailing.”
The Doctor’s sturdy frame shudders against yours when he issues another low, grinding laugh, chuckling into the side of your head. You blearily come out of your stupor now that what you think must be the worst of it has passed, alertness slowly returning to you as you stir within the confines of his arms. But the one around your waist merely tightens, keeping you securely fastened to him, while the other flexes with the tensing of musculature and chorded sinew.
In torturous slow motion, the fingers inside your trembling quim begin to retreat. Sliding out from the clinging grip of you one mind numbing fraction at a time until only the first joint remains wedged. Then he pushes back in, at that same staggered pace, gliding through the sticky mess along your guts until you’ve taken both of his first two fingers in their entirety again. The same wet, sloppy squelch as before punctuates the air, sounding unbearably loud in the otherwise still and silent library.
You almost curse yourself for even considering it right now, given your own predicament, and yet you can’t help but wonder what Zandik must be thinking. Listening to his younger counterpart — because that’s all you can think of him as — patiently working you open with his hand, the muffled gasps and whines that slip out from behind your cupped palm. The bow legged shuffle of your awkwardly splayed feet, its cause unmistakable. The tall tell sound of a drenched, terribly stuffed pussy being worked over, manipulated, and plucked to vibrating fever pitch.
Was he possibly even watching, having turned around in his chair to observe the spectacle that unfolds before him?
It was not so different from what he himself had already done to you, in truth, but the Doctor takes a much different approach in his defilement of your body. He is not nearly as doting in his methodology of playing with your cunt as the old man was, nor particularly gentle about the way he crooks his thrusting fingers and jabs at your upper wall, as if to reach all the way through you to come out at your bellybutton. He’s demanding and forceful, merciless. And you positively flood around his thrusting digits, quite against your will.
The same nearly suffocating pressure from before rapidly swells throughout your loins to leave them knotted and twisted, turning molten within the protective cradle of your internal organs. It feels like your cunt is melting all over again. Liquifying into a mess of warm, sticky mead. It leaves you soaring and panicked, drunk on the potent rush of endorphins that crashes over you and drowns you all at once. This time you really were going to —
“That’s it, little mouse. Ride my hand. Yesss, just like that. Chase your pleasure for me. There, there. That’s a good girl. Are you going to cum for me? Go on. Don’t be scared. You’ve already ruined my glove with the proof of your innocence, haven’t you? What harm could a bit more do?”
You struggle to make any sense at all of what it is he’s saying, whining a frantic sound in the back of your throat even as your hips pitifully jump in his palm. It’s impossible to think straight, just as it is impossible to breathe like this, but you still find yourself bobbing your head in agreement all the same. Whatever it was that awaited you on the other side, you knew you wanted it. Needed it. Craved it more than anything else right now when he had you wound so terribly tight.
But that suffocating blanket of relief was not meant to be yours, clearly, because the Doctor waits until you’re teetering right on the edge again before he cruelly rips his fingers away. Wailing behind your hand at the sudden loss, you twist and pathetically buck in his hold while your pussy sadly clenches around nothing. The empty void he’s left in you just makes you want it even more, practically out of your mind with a hitherto unknown ecstasy of the flesh.
He just doesn’t care though, merely laughing at your flagrant animal display as he carefully moves to withdraw his hand from your underwear. Realizing that he truly intends to leave you like this, worked up and wanting, has you gasping like a beached fish when you tilt your face down to look between your legs in shellshocked disbelief.
And the shimmering thread of gossamer slick that you find stretching between the rumpled edge of your panties and his glistening fingers promptly sends a fresh thrill of mortification though your system.
You really were melting.
“Ah, there’s a good pet.” He purrs, quite pleased with the show you’ve unintentionally put on for him. The bastard. “I think I rather like the face you make when you’re trying not to cry. It’s very becoming on you, if I do say so myself.”
The Doctor lifts his hand towards you then, aiming on a clear and steady trajectory right for the fingers you have clasped over your mouth. But you screw your eyes shut and try to turn your head away from him, squirming in an attempt to free yourself.
It does you no good, not any more than it did all the other times you’ve tried to reject what he’s doing to you, and after only a brief struggle of clashing wills he finally manages to yank your scrabbling palm away.
“Here you are. Open up, little mouse.” Murmuring soft condescensions at you, he nudges his sticky fingers at your mouth and persistently follows after you with them each time you try to twist away. “Don’t fuss now. Take your medicine like a big girl. It's doctor's orders. You understand.”
“Mmmn! N - no - -!”
You don’t get the chance to say anything more on the matter when the Doctor rudely shoves his digits past your lips, stuffing your mouth full and silencing any other protests you might have had. The taste of leather and oil, and your own cunt floods your tastebuds in an instant, and you squeal a harried sound around the intrusion but it’s already too late. His long fingers settle across your tongue, keeping your jaw wedged open around them to leave you with no other choice than to grudgingly suck him clean.
It’s hard not to feel humiliatingly infantile in that moment while you work your mouth around the intrusion, especially when your compliance earns you a masculine hum of approval from your assailant. But you don’t like it, not one bit, grimacing at the bitter taste of salt and other secretions even as you dutifully swallow it down. It’s not as if you could do much of anything else in this situation. Not when he has you clasped to the front of him with the reinforced steel of his forearm.
“There. Isn’t that better? Don’t you feel appropriately coddled now, dear? Certainly much better than whatever that old fossil did for you, I trust.”
You shoot him a sharp, grumpy scowl from the corner of your eye but the Doctor only snorts a bemused sound, finally pulling his fingers from your mouth once he’s deemed them to be thoroughly serviced.
“My, that’s quite the look, isn’t it? Although I suppose I can’t blame you for being a bit fussy with me, I feel I must warn you to make sure you’ve appropriately fixed your face by the time Pantalone stops by to pay you a visit. We wouldn’t want to rouse his concerns regarding your treatment here, now would we?”
Somehow that manages to pierce through the inebriated fog hanging over your head and, still harshly panting in the aftermath of your ordeal, you turn your face towards him in question. “Lord Regrator? He … he’s coming here?”
“Why, of course. This is one of his properties, after all.”
The unexpected bombshell of this information leaves you thoroughly floored, so much so that you don’t even think to yank yourself free when the Doctor loosens his hold on you. With an amicable pat to your hip, he finally lets you down to stand on your own two feet again before he pulls away, disengaging from your person. But not without a belittling smack to your ass that makes your cheeks blaze anew.
You’d simply assumed that this manor house belonged to Zandik or perhaps the Lord Harbinger himself. Both of them, even. The notion that this was in fact Regrator’s home hadn’t even crossed your mind. He’d said it was only one of them, though, so perhaps he didn’t frequent it all that often? That would at least explain why you hadn’t seen him even once over the last month.
Feeling a bit cowed now, you give a prim little sniff and set about smoothing your uniform out to the best of your ability. That bird-faced menace had wrinkled the dark skirt beyond repair, damn him.
But still, he lingers just over your shoulder even when you try very hard to ignore him, chuckling another low sound when you refuse to give him anymore of your attention.
“Don’t pout. That was only a simple demonstration, darling mouse, but I promise to play with you much more thoroughly next time. I’ll make sure to set aside enough time, just for you. Let's call it … a bonus, shall we? But do remember what I said, won’t you? Whatever that old coot can do for you, I can do so much better.”
Unable to help yourself, you snap another sharp look at him in warning, embarrassed and humiliated in equal measure. That it only earns you another sharp laugh for your trouble frustrates you a great deal, and you stand there stewing in your anger when he at last turns to leave with one last bark of amusement. The sound of his boots moving across the floor precedes the click of the door, the groan of old hinges and then the slam of it shutting behind him.
And finally you are enveloped in still, peaceful silence again.
Or would have been, had your stomach not been twisting itself into a thrumming ball of knots.
Cautiously slow, you peer over your shoulder to look back at the desk.
Sure enough you find Zandik’s hunched frame sitting right where you’d left him. He’d heard every last bit of it, then. Even if his hearing was not quite as keen as he’d claimed it to be, he was still sitting in much too close proximity to have missed any of it. Double damn that masked fiend! And you were quite certain he’d intentionally put on that little display just for Zandik’s benefit. You couldn’t even begin to guess at why he would do something like that, but it was becoming increasingly more obvious to you that the Doctor was nothing more than a selfish bully. It probably pleased him to no end to swoop in and steal something that he likely already suspected the old man wanted for himself.
And yet you still hesitate there in front of the crammed bookshelves for a long moment, wrestling with your indecision when you were so unsure how to proceed from here. A very real part of you wants to flee from this room, this house, the sprawling grounds outside and disappear into the snowy mountains, never to be seen again. Not once have you ever been so terribly stricken with shame in all of your life.
But the logical, rational part of your brain knew you couldn’t do that. Your mother needed the money and Zandik, too, needed your company. You couldn’t just leave him to the care of that horrible man even if you did wish that a hole would open up in the floor and swallow you into the bowels of the earth so you wouldn’t have to deal with this mess.
Desperately fumbling for your resolve, you finally make up your mind and start to inch your way over to Zandik’s chair. His attention remains steadfastly fixed upon the book in front of him, however, and as you get closer you can tell this is very much intentional on his part. He doesn’t want to look at you. Oh, how in the world were you possibly going to navigate this precarious situation now?
“M - Master Zandik?” You tentatively hedge, coming up alongside him on a nervous shuffle. “Is there anything I can get for you? Is your coffee still warm?”
He doesn’t respond beyond a mute shake of his head, looking so utterly crestfallen and dejected in his high backed chair that it tugs at your heartstrings something fierce. It was like the air had been let out of a balloon and he now sat, deflated, stewing in his own melancholy.
You feel immediately and irrevocably terrible, even though you had no idea why he would behave like this. Anger would have been understandable, perhaps even preferable. You could probably understand it a lot more than his currently despondent mood, anyway.
In all honesty, you hadn’t thought he cared all that much for you to begin with, the way he always treated you like nothing more than a proper nuisance. But you’d have to puzzle that out another day.
Scrambling for something appropriate to say in the present, you hear yourself impulsively blurt, “I’m sorry you had to listen to that. It was not my intention to …”
To, what? Be assaulted against your will? No, that wasn’t it. But what did you call it then? Was it disrespectful to him, that you’d been accosted by his associate without putting up more of a fight? Was that what he was upset about?
Or had it been a blow to his ego for him to sit there, listening, while the Doctor gleaned such explosive results from a similar perusal of your cunt? Dripping just as wet as before, and sore now, soaking into your panties with the proof of what the other man had done to you while you stood there next to Zandik begging for his acknowledgement.
You have absolutely no idea what to say or how to fix this, if it even could be fixed.
But, at length, he finally exhales a weary breath, inspiring a low flutter of hope in your guts as you watch him slowly sit up in his chair, the gesture stiff. Halting.
“It’s nothing for you to apologize for, stupid girl.” He grumbles, obviously unhappy. “This is just how things are, isn’t that right? The strong rule over the weak, and the young replace the old. I knew that, of course. But …”
The creased wrinkles along his brow deepen slightly when he frowns as if in thought. It’s not hard to see he’s pondering over some troublesome aspect of this situation, either his own feelings on the matter or the circumstances that had led to this end result, and you patiently wait there at his elbow for a conclusion to be reached.
You can’t even begin to guess at what he’ll say next, but somehow or another the very last thing you expect is, “It’s surprisingly frustrating, though. I wouldn’t have thought I’d still care about these things at this age.”
Your stomach pulls with a faint tug of uncertainty. “Sir?”
Giving his head another brief shake, Zandik allows himself to recline back against the cushioned support behind him where he finally sends you a sidelong glance.
“The feeling of being one upped. Bested. And by myself, no less. It seems that no matter how old I get or how much I think I’ve matured over time, a man’s pride remains a delicate thing. Even when I know I simply can’t compete on the same physical level anymore, it still manages to wound almost as much as admitting this to you does.”
You slowly blink at that. So that’s what this was about. And worse, it made a certain amount of sense that he should feel this way. You’d been given to him, promised to be his servant, only for that masked man to turn around and lay claim on you himself. Even if the logic was a bit backwards, seeing as you’d never agreed to your body being a part of the deal, you did understand it on some level.
“I see.” You say at last. “That way of thinking isn’t unfounded, I suppose. But … Master Zandik, please forgive me for speaking out of turn, it’s just. I really don’t think that this is something you should be concerned about.”
A mirthless laugh punches out of him, laced with the startings of his ire. “And why is that? Don’t try to coddle me, girl. I don’t need your sympathy or my ego fluffed. It is simply the way of the world.”
Flinching slightly, you almost find yourself backing down. He was getting short with you now, and you so hated to agitate him, but you foolishly decide to stand your ground on this. You had to.
“Master, that is just not true. Of course you’re not wrong to say that he is on a different level than you physically, but that’s not all there is to it. There are — other factors at play here. Things that you aren’t considering.”
Zandik scoffs an impatient sound. “Such as? Go on then. Tell me all about it, if you know so much.”
You quickly draw a purposeful breath to do just that, but the words immediately get stuck in your throat. Panic starts to set in. How were you possibly supposed to explain to him that he was the more agreeable choice — even despite his age and physical condition, even if he thought those things made him inferior to the Doctor — and you liked him better by simple virtue of the fact that he had not terrorized you as the masked man had?
Your cunt still throbbed with the lingering evidence of that, sore and achy in the aftermath of his rough treatment whereas Zandik’s almost affectionate petting had only left you craving more. If you were going to have your innocence stripped by anyone then you would have preferred it to be him.
But you couldn’t just say that! What would you look like, inviting an old man to touch you in that manner? And that was to say nothing of the fact that he was clearly just waiting to write off whatever you had to say as mere lip service? Something to mend his bruised pride and make him feel marginally better about himself, candy for a scraped knee. But unless you could actually figure out how to convince him of your sincerity it would never amount to anything of worth in his mind. Just pretty, placating words. The sympathy he already told you he didn’t want.
So, what was the solution?
The two of you stay like that for an uncomfortably long stretch of minutes, just looking at one another, while you frantically scramble for the answer to that exceedingly difficult question. Seeing the flustered uncertainty on your face, however, he eventually turns away with a gravelly sound of annoyance.
“As I thought. That will be all for now. Leave me to my work.”
Your knotted stomach plummets into the ground at your feet. “But, sir - -“
“I said leave me to it!”
Jolting at the harsh reprimand in his voice, you take a frightened little step back from him. He’d never hit you before, not in earnest anyway. You didn’t count the quick swats he’d sometimes give your hands if you were reaching for something you shouldn’t have been in the lab when you accompanied him down there. But seeing the old man this outraged, you aren’t so sure he won’t start.
And yet, in spite of it all, Zandik instead just shuts you out completely. With a singleminded focus, he sits up in his chair and leans over his book again, taking up his pen in the right hand. Ignoring you completely, as if you didn’t even exist anymore within the narrow stretch of his world. Just like it was when you’d first arrived here.
To say you’d simply stretched the truth in your letter would have been an understatement. It had taken you almost an entire week to get him to speak to you at all, and another after that before he would engage in anything even remotely resembling a friendly conversation. This was all wrong. You couldn’t go back to walking on eggshells after all that hard work you’d put in just to earn even a tiny sliver of his trust. That damned Doctor had thrown everything into disarray simply because he couldn’t keep his hands to himself. You had to think fast and you had to think smart.
There was only one thing that came to mind which might remedy this situation though, and you weren’t so sure it would work. You also weren’t convinced you had the stomach for it, especially after everything else your poor cunt had already endured today, but you at least had to try. You needed to show him you weren’t just saying things to protect his pride but that you really, truly meant it.
Your heartbeat slams a violent, pounding rhythm against your ribcage as you make your decision on a spur of the moment whim and slowly reach down to grab at the bulk of your housekeeping uniform, lifting the skirt up around your hips. Just that simple act makes your skin crawl, having never exposed yourself to anyone like this before. Not of your own volition, anyway, and you pointedly keep your chin tucked so you won’t have to look at him as you shuffle right back up into the space you just vacated a moment ago. Silent and hopeful as you present your cunt to him in offering.
At first he just continues to ignore you, the whole of his attention fixed on the birdlike scrawl he scratches out on the sheet of notes. Not for the first time you wonder what he’s working on but say nothing for fear that it would just come out a jumbled mess and further embarrass you when you were already internally withering.
All you can do now is wait for him to decide whether or not to acknowledge you, whether he would keep you or send you away. But you intrinsically understood that the only way you were going to get through to him was by showing Zandik that you weren’t simply coddling him with empty words.
And finally, after what feels like many lifetimes has crept by at a glacial pace, he finally brings his attention up with a particularly bothered sigh. Turning towards you at last, he impassively takes in the sight of you standing there with your panties flashed at him, the deeply frazzled look on your face and the death grip you’ve got on the hiked up skirt.
You’re not sure how you must look to him in that moment — like some tawdry trollop, if you had to take a guess — but he doesn’t move or say anything at all until, eventually, you start to self-consciously squirm under his piercing gaze.
“And what’s this, now?” He says in a clipped tone of voice, dropping his pen to the desk with a noisy clatter. His eyes remain locked on you, however, not dissimilar to those of a predator staring down a helpless prey animal, and you hope that this is a good sign. Maybe that meant he would actually listen to you now.
Yet you still can’t quite seem to find your voice, completely choked up by your own self conscious embarrassment, so you make do with simply nudging your pelvis forward to indicate what you want from him. But Zandik just narrows his eyes, glowering at you from behind the single lens of his monocle, as if he expected this to be some cruel, insidious trap.
“You want me to touch you, is that it? Well? Speak, girl, before I decide to put your mouth to better use than all that inane prattling you’re so prone to. You won’t shut up when I want you to but then you’re as silent as a crypt when I ask you a simple question.” He scoffs a rough sound and then, more gently, adds, “I would have thought you’ve had enough of other people’s hands on you for one day.”
Nervously biting your lip, you offer up a slow shake of your head. “I - it’s not that, Master Zandik. I just … it felt — better when you did it. So I thought you might want to … finish what you started earlier. That’s all.”
As far as appeals to pride and ego are concerned, it’s not a particularly clever one.
But something still shifts behind his eyes, something you have no name for and which you were very much unaccustomed to having directed at you. It looked like something akin to a distant flicker of heat though, the curlings of genuine interest making the dulled irises subtly light up from within.
Is this what it was like to have a man look at you with plainly unbridled lust, you wonder, even as he slowly reaches out for you with a silent gesture.
Your breath starts to come short again when his bony fingers slip into the space between your thighs, finding the gusset of your panties once more and pressing up into them. He makes a low noise in the back of his throat at the unmistakably dampened quality of the material while you tremble weakly at the contact.
For a tortuously long moment, Zandik just takes his time petting over you through that thin, flimsy barrier, coaxing your pussy into buzzing for him again. Testing if you were really telling the truth. And you were. His touch was so much more intentional, less impatient, than the Doctor’s, and it nearly bowls you over how quickly your arousal skyrockets back to full force under his watchful eye.
That probably wasn’t too terribly surprising though, you supposed, given that you’d already been denied the relief of absolution twice now. And yet that was precisely why you were so eager to reposition yourself back into his good graces again. You could have lied to yourself, convinced your heavy conscience that you were only doing this for his sake, to ensure melancholia didn’t take hold of an already sensitive constitution. But that would have been a boldfaced lie.
In truth it was your cunt urging you on, dictating your choices, and you rattle out a threadbare little moan when he eventually turns in his chair to better face you.
Using both hands now, Zandik pinches at the corners of your underwear and ever so gently tugs them down your thighs. One inch at a time they drag lower and lower, until the rumpled cotton finally meets the tops of your stockings. They can’t go any further than that with the garterbelt clasps in the way, but that is all he needs.
Shivering at the molten rush that sweeps over you, pussy hot and swollen, bared fully out in the open like this, you sway almost dizzily there on your feet. “Nngh, Master Zandik … please. Please touch me. J - just like you did before. Please?”
He faintly clicks his tongue even though he’s already half way through the motion of reaching up between your legs again. But this time his cool digits touch skin and slick pubic hair, applying just a small amount of pressure on your slit to make it part for him.
Only to immediately draw a sharp little breath. “No wonder your panties felt so wet. You’re positively soaked. I’m sure a nice, hard cock would just slip right in there, wouldn’t it? Is that what you want? Are you secretly hoping I’ll fuck you here and now, you stupid little girl?”
Equally aghast at his crass language and running hotter than ever before at the deeply felt response it inspires within your body, you tip your head back to groan up at the ceiling. “Oough. Don’t say that. Please. Don’t even think about it. That’s so … it’s …”
Zandik rumbles a low chuckle at that, more and more of his usual self assured confidence returning to him now as he nudges further up into the fleshy grip of your labia. “What else am I supposed to think about when I’ve got such a fresh, lovely young thing offering herself up to me like this? Even an old man’s cock still works, you know.”
You can’t help the way you whimper at the thought of it, positively gushing against his worn fingertips when they locate your clit and set in to rub. The glide is perfectly smooth and lubricated, and that delicate pearl simply pulses under his steady attention.
Your hands shake as you hike your skirt up a bit higher, jutting your pelvis further into that mind numbing source of pressure. It really does feel good, so much better than whatever that selfish Doctor had forced you to endure. This was something else entirely, and it has your vision blurring around the edges while you try to find your bearings and orient yourself again, bracing squarely on your heels.
It’s an effort in futility though. Just like before, the surging tide of pleasure rushes up to swallow you and it sweeps you off your feet, pulling you under the current. Your head swims and your chest tightens. Knees wobbling faintly in their locked positions. It’s too much and, somehow, not enough at the same time. You could almost sob from how intensely your pussy thrums with the static electricity of your oncoming release, every single nerve ending in you vibrating at a hitherto unheard of frequency.
And to think, it was all because of a man who was old enough to be your grandfather.
“Zuh - Zandik! Master, I … ooughh, I’m so — so …!”
“Then let it go. You’ve already got my fingers soaked, a bit more won’t hurt anything. Don’t over think it. Yes, that’s right. Just keep pressing that sweet little cunt into my hand, now. Just like that.”
You can do nothing else, in fact, eagerly rolling your hips into the motion now. The building tension within you abruptly doubles, then triples, and you screw your eyes shut when pulsing starbursts flash across your vision to effectively blind you. Letting out a faltering mewl of pleasure, you readily give yourself over fully to that hot, throbbing warmth that emanates out from your core. You can feel everything. The nudge of your pudgy labia moving with his hand. The excess slick that oozes and drips out of you. The fleshy, swollen bud of your clit rolling, rolling, rolling under his fingertips.
And you finally cum, the thread snapping so suddenly, almost violently, that you jerk in place. A strange keening noise rattles out of you as you shake into your orgasm, pelvis stuttering while he continues to rub, rub, rub. You have no choice but to ride it to completion and you weakly shudder through the spasms, struggling to remain upright and erect. That’s an exceedingly difficult task, however, when it felt like the whole world was being flipped upside down on its head around you.
Finally wheezing a haggard, utterly spent moan into the static charged air of the quiet library, you abruptly slam back into your own body a small eternity later. The unexpectedness of it staggers you, damn near knocks you on your ass, and you stumble back half a step as if in shock.
The new distance separates Zandik’s hand from your still squeezing cunt, and he consideringly peers up at you while you try to catch your breath. You couldn’t believe that had just happened. Not that you’d allowed it or that the sensation had left you soaring somewhere far outside your own mind high above the stratosphere. It was, in many ways, inconceivable.
“Oh … oh, blessed mother.” You finally croak, once you’ve managed to find some semblance of your voice again. “That was — interesting, wasn’t it?”
Zandik barks a sharp, not entirely humorless laugh. “Is that what you call it then? Just interesting?”
Wheezing out a long, grounding exhale, you shoot him a somewhat surreptitious look as you tiredly drop your arms, allowing your skirt to fall back into place. “Were you expecting something else?”
“Perhaps. I might have liked to hear how utterly amazing it was, or how skillful my technique is.”
“You just wanted to be praised, didn’t you?”
“Every man wants to be praised, girl. It would do you well to remember that in the future.”
You realize then, glancing down at him sitting there, looking like he was quite pleased with himself, that he was having a bit of fun with it. Teasing you in a way you’d never experienced before. Not from him, at any rate, and you allow yourself a soft, thoroughly satiated laugh as you tiredly reach to tug your panties back up.
“I’ll admit, it was awfully nice. I didn’t know my body could feel like that, especially after … w - well, that’s not really important.”
“It’s alright.” Zandik tells you, surprisingly soft. “I cannot take back what he did to you while I was incapable of doing anything to stop it, but I can try to make it a little better for you. That was your first orgasm, wasn’t it?”
The shock of that question must be written across your face in broad sweeping brush strokes, because he gives his head a slow, almost disappointed shake.
“It didn’t occur to me at first that that might be the case. But I figured it out shortly after you held up your dress for me. It just didn’t make sense for anyone who is at all familiar with the erogenous functions of their body to behave the way that you were. As if you wanted it but didn’t know how to ask for it, or even what you should be asking for.”
Putting his head to one side — one of a few different gestures he seemed to share with the Doctor — Zandik studies you from that new angle for a drawn out moment.
“Come here, girl. And no tricks this time, I give you my word.”
Hesitantly heeding his summons, you step up next to his chair again on wobbly legs. A distant note of surprise quickly washes over you when he reaches up to slide his hand along the curve of your waist, pulling you in against him until you realize what he’s doing. You put up a cursory amount of resistance then, insisting again and again that you were too big, too grown, to sit on his lap when he tries to tug you down. But in the end Zandik wins out, his stubbornness exceeding even yours, and you finally let him drag you onto his thigh.
Your reluctant compliance does absolutely nothing to steady your nerves, though, and you squeak a tiny sound as you come to settle in place against him. “M - Master Zandik? Surely I am much too heavy to be on top of you like this! What will I do if I accidentally hurt you?”
“Nonsense. You’re much too self conscious for my liking. We’ll have to work on that. But for now,” sighing rather softly, contently, almost, he leans his head back against the chair and closes his eyes. Looking for all the world like he was settling in for a much needed nap. Honestly, you could have used one of those yourself.
“Just sit and enjoy the quiet for a moment, won’t you? Do some self reflecting on how you feel or meditate, or do nothing at all. I don’t really care either way. Just … be silent with me.”
You would have jumped at the chance in almost any other situation, under any other circumstances, but a doubtful niggling at the back of your mind makes that nearly impossible. Even in the hazy warmth of afterglow you’re almost too antsy to sit still. Because even despite having never taken part in such activities before, at least not until today, you’d certainly heard whisperings about it. You were not that naive as to have completely missed out on the way both women and men alike often talked about sex.
It was usually the other way around, wasn’t it? Or at least that had been your impression up til’ now. That men tended to lean towards being selfish and they rarely concerned themselves with the pleasure of their partners. That they were demanding and only sought their own release before rolling over and going to sleep without a second thought to anything else. It was in part why you’d avoided being courted by anyone, for fear of being on the receiving end of such impartial advances.
And while Zandik certainly looked as if he was starting to doze off, it seemed that this was a bit out of order from how you’d been told it would be.
Unable to keep your concerns at bay any longer, you give in to the urge and ever so carefully fidget atop his lap. “But, Master … what about you? Should I not be seeing to your needs as well?”
His eyes do not open but the pale line of his brow does draw in, knitting and deepening the wrinkles on his forehead slightly. “No need for that. Not at the moment, at any rate.”
You sneak a quick peak down at the front of his pants to briefly study the weakening tent there. It looked like he’d been right, and even an old man’s cock still worked under the right conditions, and the Doctor had been wrong. If you were only brave enough — or stupid enough — you might have liked to rub that in his stupid, smug face.
“Is this really okay though? Are you sure?”
“Gods, girl! You don’t know how to just let things rest, do you?” Zandik snaps alert again to turn a narrow eyed scowl your way. Back to his usual grumpy self, it seemed. “If I didn’t know any better I’d think you were fishing for it. Is that it? Do you actually want me to fuck you sensless, right here and now?”
He barks a mirthless snort at your startled expression of plain faced shock.
“As I thought. Then unless you want me to change my mind I’d suggest you learn to let sleeping dogs lie.” Exhaling a deeply ruffled breath, he tips his head back to regard the ceiling as if in deep contemplation. “You’ve already made it clear you have no desire to go that far with me, and I can hardly say I blame you for that. I’m also not physically equipped to make you do something you don’t want to. Not with this old body, at any rate. So I won’t even try.”
“But,” you stubbornly take another jab at it, feeling that you would be remiss if you didn’t at least make an effort to better understand him. It was odd for him to seek out this sort of prolonged physical contact with you anyway, and yet he didn’t want anything from you in return while doing it? That just doesn’t make any sense. “You could just order me to do whatever you want. Why won’t you?”
Zandik huffs a quiet laugh. “And what would the fun be in that, huh?”
A strange little flutter starts up in your chest but you’re quick to suppress it, shoving it back down into some vault in the back of your head where you can lock it up and throw away the key. That was a dangerous possibility threatening to open up before you. It wouldn’t do to let this situation spiral any further out of control, if you could help it, especially when you were already toeing the line of indecency like this.
No. No, you’d have to remain steadfast for as long as you were in the thick of it dealing with this situation.
As if it had been cued to do so, the grandfather clock along the opposite wall abruptly chimes then, disrupting the resounding quiet with such an earth shattering explosion that you jolt right up out of his lap.
“Oh!” You blurt, flushing hotly when Zandik sends you a flat look as if to say ‘see? always so damn jumpy’. Like you hadn’t already embarrassed yourself enough for one day. “I - it’s lunchtime already? How time flies! I didn’t even … didn’t even notice how late it was getting. I’ll go start on something right away!”
Ignoring his very unimpressed frown, you pivot on your heel and hurry over to the window side to grab up the coffee carafe on your way out. You knew he would want a fresh pot to go with whatever luncheon sandwich or savory soup you prepared for him that day, and you were admittedly quite glad for the chance to beat a hasty retreat from this room. It was inexplicably stuffy and fogged with something unspeakable. Something you didn’t even dare to dwell on.
Stepping up to the little table at the corner of the windowsill, your hand reaches out to loop around the silver handle and you start to turn away. But a suggestion of movement at the edge of your peripheral makes you hesitate, head turning, as you glance out the window and down at the yard below.
Where you proceed to watch someone unknown to you — a young man, by the looks of it— as he walks away from the side of the house to step around a snow covered bush before he disappears from sight.
Your hand immediately starts to shake with the terrified tremor that works up your arm, vibrating so badly you almost drop the carafe to an ear splitting crash against the floor.
He’d had his back to you so hadn’t gotten a good look at the face, but the hair …
It had been the exact same, wispy shade of pale blue that Zandik’s and the Doctor’s was.
When your daughter's psychiatrist suggests you get in touch with your abusive ex-husband in prison for her sake, you're not thrilled. Fortunately for you, he's dead. Unfortunately for you, someone else is alive and very keen on playing the part of a doting father. wc: 3.1k
Anyone who saw the way you were glaring at the red envelope sitting on your kitchen counter would assume you were trying to vaporize it through thought alone.
When your daughter's recuring nightmares had made you consult a children's psychiatrist, she'd come to the conclusion that your daughter missed her deadbeat of a father.
"He's in jail" You'd deadpanned.
"Perhaps, she could visit?"
"Thank you"
You weren't interested in any suggestions the psychiatrist had to make that revolved around getting your daughter involved with your criminal of a husband. Not that you could even if you wanted to.
Hell didn't really have a visitors' policy.
As you absentmindedly braided her hair that night, you wondered if it was your bad luck or good grace that he'd been killed in a riot in jail. When the penitentiary had phoned for you to come and identify his body, you'd been scared.
Scared that it wouldn't be him and the bastard would've cheated death itself.
You decided there was no need for your daughter to ever know what kind of person her father was. But as she grew older and the neighbors' kids started talking, it was clearly affecting her more than you'd realized.
"Hey, Bun" You softly turned her to face you "Do you miss Daddy?"
Her eyes widened like she had been caught with her hand in the cookie jar before she hid her hands behind her back, shoulders drooping "No.."
"It's okay if you do" You reassured her. You couldn't blame her for feeling left out when she watched all the little kids get picked up by both their parents. It was obvious she'd wonder why she didn't have that.
You weighed your options. If you played it right, you could satisfy her and also keep her in the dark at the same time.
"Would you like to write him a letter?"
Tears sprang to your eyes when you saw how instantly she bloomed in joy, nodding vigorously and trying to escape your hold so she could do it immediately. You stopped her, promised you'd help her write it the next day if she went to bed at once.
Three days after she posted her letter, you brought one home with a flourish, telling her that her father had written back after all!
If the little lie you told was the reason your daughter had the dopiest smile on her face, you'd never feel guilty for it ever again. Especially not as you tucked her into bed that night, her little fist still clutching the letter like it was her lifeline.
It was only a few days later that you felt your heartbeat nearly triple when she rushed into the house, clutching a blood red envelope "Mommy! Mommy look!" You'd been folding laundry when she barreled into your legs "Daddy wrote letter again!"
You didn't mean to, but you snatched the letter from between her hands so fast, it startled her. Lower lip wobbling, you saw the tears well up in her eyes and immediately decided to do damage control.
"Daddy said I should only give you this letter if you freshen up for dinner quickly!"
When your daughter turned and sprinted for the bathroom, you couldn't believe it had worked. Abandoning the laundry, you tore the envelope open and started reading.
You stared in disbelief. Sure, you had really posted the letter to the penitentiary when your daughter had insisted to take it all the way to the post office herself. You'd come up with a random serial number on the spot and figured they'd just toss the letter when they realized there was no one with that number on the roster.
My dearest Princess,
Daddy very much misses you as well. I'm always thinking of my precious daughter.
P.S You are very good at drawing! I'm proud of you.
Love,
Daddy
Not only had someone received her letter...they'd also written back? In character?
The obvious conclusion is that it's an accident. An obvious mix-up. But your daughter is so ecstatic, you can't possibly break her heart like this.
So, you let her write a letter back. Again going to the post office and posting it.
When the third letter comes back from the prison, you decide to take matters in your own hands. Writing a little letter of your own and enclosing it with your daughter's drawings.
I really appreciate you humoring my daughter, but this was just a way to cope since her father is dead. There is no need to keep up with the farce.
I don't mind it. I quite enjoy her little sketches of the three of us. Tell her that Daddy's hair is lighter in color (:
I will not be telling her anything of the sort.
So cutthroat. You wound me, darling.
Despite yourself, you found your lips lifting at his words, but you caught yourself in record time, shoving the little note in your jeans as you quickly skimmed over his letter to your daughter before you deemed it okay to hand it to her.
She squealed with delight, clutching her new bunny by the ear as she thundered down to her room to read her letter in "secret". You watched her go till she was out of sight, still staring after her and wondering if it really was a bad idea to exchange harmless letters. If some bored criminal wanted to play house with your daughter over some letters, was there really any real danger to it?
You'd always check the letter she'd write, illegible as it was, to see if she didn't accidentally reveal any information about herself. And after she'd go to sleep, you'd only change one little thing.
Erasing her name at the bottom, you used your non-dominant hand to sign a pet name. Not once had you let your daughter's letters carry her real name over to a criminal. For the sake of her mental health, you'd allowed the letters, but this was non-negotiable to you.
Like clockwork, every Tuesday his letter arrives, you skim the contents before re-sealing it and handing it over to your daughter when she comes home from pre-school. Subsequently, you post her letter every Wednesday evening, using an address that was four blocks away from yours, belonging to the sweetest old lady who lived by herself and had dementia. You felt horrible taking advantage of the fact that she never checked her mail so you could always just conveniently swipe out the letters from her mailbox, but you brought her enough baked goods to make up for it. The letters you sent were just addressed to the penitentiary; with the serial number of an inmate you'd never know the owner of.
He signed his letters Skye but after having lived a life in hiding with a criminal, you'd learned not to trust the lot. If your daughter's deteriorating mental state hadn't been in question, the first letter would've never gone out.
One Tuesday evening, your daughter pulls at your pants to grab your attention and gives you a tiny note that she says is from Daddy. Your senses immediately go on high alert, wondering how you could've missed it, worrying he's said something inexcusable and you would have to stop this little pen pal relationship.
Am I not allowed to know what my daughter looks like?
You feel a vein throbbing in your forehead, smiling at your daughter as she stares at you with her big doe-like eyes before you distract her with a snack.
If he wants to know what your daughter looked like, he would do something crazy like wanting to meet her if he ever got out. And if that wasn't bad, he'd probably kidnap her or do something inane, maybe he was already plotting it. Feeling your heart drop to your chest, you decide it really was the end.
That week, you don't send your daughter's letter. It remains in an unmarked envelope, hidden on the top shelf of your closet in a big box at the very back. The Wednesday of the week after, you wake up in cold sweat wondering if he sent a letter anyway. The morning of, you drop by the old lady's mailbox and quickly look through her mail just in case and sigh in relief when there's nothing in it.
The next week, you can't help the dread as you're swiping through the mailbox again, realizing how stupid you'd been. Not only had you probably endangered your daughter, but also the sweet old lady who always babysat for you whenever you had to pull extra shifts at work.
You can't keep the guilt off your face when you run into her at the grocery store that weekend, paying for her share as well when you realize she didn't remember to bring her wallet with her, heart pinching in agony at having taken advantage of her situation. Your daughter is skipping in front as you carry all the grocery bags, dropping the old lady off at her place with her stuff. She insists you stay for tea and you're about to decline but she's already bribed your daughter with cake and it's too late to retreat.
The sun is setting in streaks of orange and blue when you finally wave goodbye to her, adjusting the beanie on your daughter's head before she runs off again. You cross the mailbox, your stomach dropping as you backtrack and decide to doubly check.
Your hands are sweaty, forehead perspiring as you pluck out the blood red envelope, gulping as the dread overwhelms you, like hands wrapping around your throat and squeezing squeezing squeezing to see how long you'd last.
You quickly shove the letter inside your purse before your daughter can catch sight of it. There was no way she was going to read it- if at all- without you proofreading it first.
The entire walk home, you cannot keep your eyes off her. Heart palpitating like any minute you expect someone to pick her off the street and run away where you could never find her again.
Your mind is on the contents of the letter throughout preparing dinner, watching your daughter's favorite show, her bath time, reading her a story to bed and finally, like all the other nights for the past week reassuring her that her Daddy does love her even if he's not written back in a while.
By the time you're finally alone, you're about ready to rip off your hair from its roots as you hastily open the envelope and pluck the letter out.
You skim the letter, it is inconspicuous, nothing suggesting that he never received another letter, keeping the conversation going like always. Asked her about school, her best friend Kara (who was a plushie, but he'd never know) and what kind of cake she liked. Totally innocent. Picking up where they'd previously left off.
You checked for another note, and sure enough there was one. Hands trembling, you opened the twofold and started reading.
Dearest Mommy of the Prettiest Princess in the World,
You'd have appreciated the sarcasm if your knees weren't fighting the urge to buckle and give in from the dread.
I suppose I have scared you with my little request. Thus, the lack of letters from your end for the past couple weeks. I apologize for the same, I only realized the implications of my request afterwards. I meant no harm and would understand if you would like to stop completely.
You trusted the man as far as you could throw him. Considering you knew nothing about him; you decided even that was unreliable.
But once in a while, with your permission of course, if the little bunny draws any more pictures, I'd be very much interested in seeing them.
You huffed out a laugh at his audacity, feeling your chest deflate. Years spent trusting your instinct to protect your daughter had wound you so tight that feeling even a single knot loosen was enough to knock the breath out of your lungs.
In sickness and in health,
Daddy
As you posted your daughter's letter that Wednesday, you couldn't help but laugh at your inside joke, wondering how he'd take it. If his previous demeanor was anything to go by, you were guessing it'd be in stride.
"Mail!"
Complete silence filled the yard, all the inmates stopping where they were, at odds with how they'd usually be clawing over each other to get their mail first.
Because no one touched their letters till he had taken his.
The crowd parted like the red sea, hordes of men in orange clearing a path till the mailman who, for all the brave face he put on, was trembling in his pants as well. He could feel the bead of sweat on his back, lining his forehead as he watched him approach, praying to all the Gods up in Heaven that someone- anyone had written this man a letter.
When he'd realized there was no letter for him, yet again, no one had been allowed to take theirs. Not because he forbade them, but because they were scared of what he'd do.
He'd not raised his voice, barely bothered looking intimidating and yet no one stood in his vicinity as he carded through the envelopes, not finding one for himself before asking in a saccharine tone "Are you sure you didn't misplace any?"
The first week, the mailman had been cocky, confident. He'd tched as he snatched the mail back, wondering why no one else was stepping forward "Don't blame me just 'cuz there ain't a letter for you in here ya bloke"
But when no one else stepped forward to take their mail, all that confidence had wavered as he looked around at downcast eyes, no one willing to risk upsetting him any more than he already was.
For the past two weeks, inmates had been avoiding him like the plague. He wasn't amiable on any day but if he didn't receive his letters on Friday, it was a long weekend for all of them.
Especially the ones who challenged him in the ring on Saturday nights.
The second week, it was a similar outcome. The mailman didn't understand what exactly was going on but the nervous, fidgety energy of the inmates was making him nervous as he watched him go through the envelopes and come up empty.
This time he'd just raised an eyebrow, making the mailman sweat "I didn't misplace any!" The desperation and fear ringing clear in his voice.
He'd smiled, crimson eyes glimmering in the sunlight "No one's blaming you" He'd turned around but the wind still carried over the last word "Yet"
The mailman had found himself rechecking for any lost envelopes thrice. He didn't know what would become of him if he returned another week without a letter.
Everyone waited with bated breath as he flipped through the stack of mail the mailman had just handed over and a collective sigh of relief escaped when he plucked out a measly white envelope, lips lifting in a sinister smirk as he handed the rest of the stack back, uncaring of the crowd descending on the poor mailman now that they had the green signal.
He returned to his cell, littered with drawings lining the walls surrounding a single bed, desk and chair. His fingers were twitching with excitement as he tore open the envelope and three things fell out.
He picked up the one on the top first. His daughter had written back to him finally, describing in great detail that she had won a finger-painting competition in school, that Kara came second, her favorite cake was "stroubery". A wry smile lifted his lips at the little sketch of the cake next to the text with cherries lining the top.
Like always, she'd signed it
He admired your resolute, truly. Your daughter's writing was so dark that it would leave indents behind the paper and yet, you'd erase her name so cleanly every time that despite multiple attempts at shading over the lines of the pencil indents, he was yet to figure out her name.
Luv u forehver
Princess Bunny
Picking up the second letter, he couldn't help the smirk spreading over his lips when he saw what you'd addressed it.
Dearest Daddy of the Prettiest Princess in the World,
God, he wanted to see you mouth off to him in person so bad.
I've attached a picture of her.
He was so surprised that he immediately dropped your letter to look at the polaroid you'd sent him. One he stared at for all of two seconds before throwing his head back and barking with laughter, unable to help himself as his shoulders shook with mirth.
Resting his forehead on the letter, he could faintly smell the perfume lingering on it and wondered what you looked like. He'd spent almost every day since your first letter wondering who you could possibly be. Sure, he had no reason to lie here and actually complete his sentence, he could get out whenever he wanted but he looked forward to his daughter's letters. There was no fun in finding out who you were through Luke and Keiran when he was sure he could get you to come to him. And you would. Slowly but surely.
Beautiful, isn't she?
She looks forward to your letters so I suppose you can keep sending them.
In happiness and in sorrow,
Mommy
As he pinned up the latest letter next to the others, he also pinned the polaroid next to it, unable to escape the huff of laughter escaping him when he gazed at the ultrasound.
Sylus would make you his. There was simply no other option.
Dearest Mommy of the Prettiest Princess in the World,
She is, indeed the most beautiful little princess I've ever seen. She takes after her mother, I'm sure. For research purposes, would you be willing to provide evidence I can submit?
To have and to hold,
Daddy
Dearest Daddy of the Prettiest Princess in the World,
Do you want my ultrasound too?
For better or for worse,
Mommy
Dearest Mommy of the Prettiest Princess in the World,
I don't mind. Although, I'll admit I usually save the ultrasounds for a third date.
For richer or for poorer,
Daddy
Dearest Daddy of the Prettiest Princess in the World,
Unfortunately for you, I don't have those ultrasounds or a third date for you.
To love and to cherish,
Mommy
Dearest Mommy of the Prettiest Princess in the World,
Why don't we start at a first one then? I would like to know the color of your eyes.
Till' death do us part,
Daddy

a big thanks to @envy-of-the-apple for being the inspo behind this piece of work. a wonderful dc writer with lovely complex fics, i hope you all enjoy his works as much as i do.
The first time you met the sheriff, you were in the general grocer. There was a basket slung around your arm and you had long since given up on controlling your eight year old daughter, Kugisaki.
Sometimes, you've found, that as a parent, you'll have to pick and choose your battles. The only person she'll listen to is her father (she thinks so highly of him)—and his idea of discipline is a kiss on the brow and a coin in her palm.
If Kugisaki wants to wear her finest dress with the ruffles and delicate lace and all the fixins for her first official 'day out on the town', you'll let her. You'll have to go out today anyway, and it won't do for people to see you with a put out child. That will reflect badly on your husband.
It's good to make a first impression, she said, voice high pitched and matter of fact with youth. Thats what Daddy says.
Well, you told her, There's no arguing with that.
The woman at the front counter doesn't seem to mind Kugisaki skipping around in the store, singing to herself loudly. And lucky for you, you've chosen a good hour to come down. There are only three more customers present and if anything, they seem happy to see your daughter so chipper.
You linger by the fabric bolts. Your husband could use a new pair of trousers, you think. Fresh starts require a fresh foot, and all of that. And Kugisaki...perhaps she would like another day-dress or two. For school.
It has nothing at all to do with the cerulean blue brocade that has caught your eye.
You're being practical. You will not take your glove off in this store and you will not—well, you only want to make sure the quality is good. You don't want to be cheated with fabric that'll fray the moment you get a needle to it.
You have to shift about, in order to do it. Take off your glove, you mean. With a soft grunt, you pass the basket filled with miscellaneous items you forgotten to buy before moving to pull the glove off of one singular hand.
Your brows jump to the middle of your forehead. Your lips purse, pleased. There's a slight texture to the silk brocade. Like scales of a snake. Either way, it's beautiful. But you aren't going to buy it. No, because it's impractical. Improper too. Such a fabric would suit a lady far younger than you.
The bell chimes overhead the door, successfully bringing you out of your stupor. You snatch your hand away from the fabric as though you've somehow been burned hot, swiveling on your foot to find your daughter.
"Well, excuse me, little lady" A masculine voice says, white hat obscuring his face as he peers down at your daughter. "I don't think I've ever seen you around these parts"
Kugisaki holds her dolly underneath her arm and rocks back and forth on the heels of her brown boots. "We just moved here"
"We?—"
The man goes to say something else, but you don't care to hear it. You cross the store faster than you ever thought possible, gripping Kugisaki tightly around the wrist and pulling her behind you.
Heart rabbiting in your throat, you swallow around the panic lodged there. You lift your steel gaze to the stranger to...you don't know. Politely give him a piece of your mind, but your words get stuck in your windpipe.
Blue. His eyes, they're the prettiest shade of blue.
A slow smile pushes its way onto the mans face. Like he's trying not be amused and failing miserably at it. He's handsome, devastatingly so. You won't let your gaze drag down his body, but his shoulders are broad and oh god, there's an unmistakable star pinned over his heart.
"O-oh you must be the sheriff..." Your voice sounds breathy and awed, even to your own ears. That causes you to grimace. "I apologize...I thought you were..."
What were you thinking? That he was an outlaw, coming to kill your daughter? Ridiculous. By the looks of this man, he doesn't have a murderous bone in his body.
"No offense taken" The sheriff says, grinning so hard his eyes gleam with it. "You musta just moved in, near the apple orchard?"
"Yes, that's right" You answer simply, offering no other information. In truth, when you first moved in, there was a constant stream of visitors. Too many for you to keep up with. Contractors, farmhands, house staff, businessman. If the sheriff was among that long list, you have no idea.
You lessen your grip around Kugisaki's wrist once she begins to squirm—wanting freedom. You let go of her wrist; but you don't let her out of your sight, drawing her body in close to your side.
"It's a lovely house" He says, and holds out his hand for you to shake. "And it's lovely meetin you, too, Miss. My name's Satoru."
Miss? Oh, so he's a jester and a sheriff.
You fumble for a moment, though eventually pass him your gloved hand for him to shake–trading pleasantries. Only, for him to completely bypass it and taking your bare hand instead.
Satoru does not shake your hand. No, he lowers himself and presses a kiss right against your knuckles. One that lasts far too long to be proper. Holds it in his sure grip, even after he's lifted his head again.
"I'm married" You blurt, rushing to take your hand back with a flaming hot face. Cursing your absent mind, you slide your hand back into the glove, wiggling your fingers for good measure.
"Happily?" Satoru inquires, and holds his hat to his chest. At your panicked expression, the sheriff laughs. "Alright, Miss. Point taken. You just let me know when that changes, you hear?"
"It won't" You tell him, sternly, huffing. "Kugisaki. It's time to go"
"Mama, I want my candy"
You turn to fix with her a Look. Not now, God, please not now. "Kugisaki" You repeat, lips pursing. "You have plenty of treats at home. Ijichi is waiting with the carriage. Let's not keep him"
"I don't want those" She says, stamping her foot and crossing her arms over her chest. "They sell watermelon candies here! I want that"
"You don't want those" Satoru interjects, leaning down so that he and your daughter are eye level. He sticks out his tongue and blows a raspberry. "Trust me, darlin. I've had every candy in the world, I know what 'm talkin about."
"You have?" She asks; eyes shiny with awe. Kugisaki's always been enthused about the world. "Really? You have?"
Satoru nods with the same level of seriousness as an executioner on hanging day. He digs into his pocket and presses a candy into her hand. "Here, why don't you take this, it tastes like raspberries. You ever eat a raspberry?"
Kugisaki shook her head.
"Well; that's a darn shame" He says, really playing it up now. He stands back to his full height and smiles over her little head. At you. Satoru's smiling at you. You force your face into one of neutrality. "They're good. But this candy will taste even better when your ma is in a good mood. Woman as pretty as your ma makes everythin better"
Beside you, Kugisaki chitters. She doesn't seem to understand whats truly funny, but the sheriff is laughing, so she does too. Children are impressionable like that.
"It was nice meeting you, Sheriff" You press, redirecting the conversation into one of propriety. Shameless. This man is absolutely shameless. "But I think we best be leaving, now"
Everything you learn about the Sheriff is against your will.
He's a Gojo—big name around these parts (around the entire region of the southwest to hear people tell it). A little young for the position, 26 to your 35. But he's good for it.
Everyone loves him. From the grumpiest of old men to the more reluctant babies and toddlers, still tucked close to their mother's skirts. You've been living here for close to nine months now. And you've seen him roughing with the children, flirting playfully with sweet old women and swapping horse-care advice with seasoned farmers and the like.
Kugisaki is no different. She's utterly charmed by this man who claims to have seen the world, always demanding for stories of other places and the people he's met there. No matter how you try to pull her away, she won't budge.
Worst part is, Satoru never seems to mind. Always says, why, she ain't bothering me none, in that sleepy little drawl of his. How he has time for all of this and to be the sheriff, you have no idea.
You suppose it makes it easier to slack off when theres virtually no crime anyway.
"This used to be a real dangerous place" Says Mei-Mei, whom you don't really like, but who has attached herself to your side anyway. "Terrible outlaw problem. Couldn't even head down to the grocer without bein accosted and man-handled"
That causes you to pause, fingers stilling against the your needle and thread before resuming. "Is that so?"
It's some sort of picnic. Though, the food has long since been abandoned and packed up. Now, the children chase each other around, hooting and hollering. You can see your darling Kugisaki among them, leading two little boys by the wrists on some loudly proclaimed adventure. One of them, sandy hair that looks pink in the spring sunlight, looks incredibly happy to be there. The other...
Well. It's all fine and dandy that Kugisaki has been able to make friends so quickly.
Kugisaki is bold in ways you are not. Perhaps she gets it from her father. You're able to make do, and the other women and mothers don't seem to mind your bouts of awkwardness or the fact that your rather content to be alone. Your closest confidant is Ieiri, but as the towns sole doctor, she's constantly busy.
But Mei-Mei is a close second. Where others have given up on trying to learn your background or anything about your personal life, she has not. She's scarily persistent. But one good thing about keeping Mei-Mei close is that she acts as a buffer against some of the more...annoying personalities in town.
However, no matter how shes presses, you keep her at a (strict but) friendly distance. You won't confide in her but you'll accept her invitations to tea and other events such as this one.
It's nice to get away from the ranch every now and again. Your husband is constantly working, always on business trips. And he makes enough money to hire help so now you can't even use housework to pass the time.
"We still don't know how he did it" Mei-Mei continues, sipping at what you suspect might be wine. "I mean, he's only one man"
It doesn't take a genius to figure out who she could be talking about. Satoru Gojo is all anyone seems to talk about in these parts.
"Well, I'm glad he does such an excellent job in keeping the town safe and protected" You say, which you think is a nice middle ground. "Bandits seem like such awful news"
Mei-Mei studies you for a long moment. There's something almost...cruel, in the analytical way she engages with the world around her.
"Yes," She says, cryptically. "They are."
There's layers hidden in her words. There usually is. You don't know why it gives you such pause, hands stilling once more. You lift your eyes from the tiny doll in your hands to peer at Mei-Mei.
Her dark, enchanting eyes slide down to the doll. The corners of her mouth quirk up in a grin. Neither of your friends have children. They are also unmarried.
Mei-Mei, is so wealthy she doesn't have to. You come from old money, but Mei-Mei puts yours to shame. From what you've noticed; everyone seems to both respect and slightly fear her. Same with Ieiri (though not as wealthy). Why either of them seem drawn to you, a married woman with a child, puzzles you endlessly.
But before Mei-Mei can speak again, your daughter wanders over to you. There's a sheen of sweat covering her skin and she's red faced and glowing with happiness. It's hot enough to melt the skin off your back but Kugisaki seems to thrive in it.
"Hi Mama," She titters, sucking on a piece of candy. She seems to remember her manners and turns towards your friend. "Hi, Miss Mei-Mei"
"Hello darlin" Mei-Mei replies, voice smoother than velvet. "What a lovely flower you've got there. You breakin hearts already?"
Kugisaki's face screws into one of acute displeasure. You hadn't noticed it before, but you do now. There's a daisy tucked behind her left ear. "The Sheriff gave it to me"
This causes you to freeze. He's been doing that lately, giving Kugisaki little gifts. A doll, candy, coin. Even when you tell him she doesn't need it. Never in the presence of others though. And certainly not at a family picnic.
"He certainly seems to have taken a likin to you," Mei-Mei says breezily, and even with the smile in her tone, you feel mocked.
"He and my husband do business often" You tell her vaguely, which is semi-true. Whenever your husband is home, Satoru stops by for dinner at least once or twice a week. He helps around the ranch or retreats up your husband's study to discuss a manner of things that honestly don't interest you.
"I had no idea" Mei-Mei replies, which you suspect is a lie. "He and your husband must be good friends if he insists on dotin on you and your daughter so much"
There's a degree of knowing in her voice. Your head jerks up to look at her. "W-well, I wouldn't say he's doting on either of us—"
"No?" She interjects, head tilted to the side, shade from the large tree casting shadows across her beautiful face. "Then that isn't him headin towards us right now?"
It is.
Satoru strolls up to where you and Mei-Mei are sitting, easy as day. He's wearing a black hat today and there is nary a drop of sweat on him. He's been circling around the grounds for a while now, steadily creeping closer.
"Hello, Sheriff" You greet amicably, conscious of how everyone seems to have turned to watch the interaction. Very pointedly, you take care not to look at him.
There's a glimmer of challenge in the depths of his blue eyes. He takes a step closer and lowers himself down on the picnic blanket. "Miss, you'll hurt my feelins, you keep on. I told you already, call me Satoru"
Your lips press into a thin line. You've told him that you don't like being called 'Miss', either. 'Miss' implies that you are young or unmarried and you are obviously neither.
"Hot out, isn't it?" You say, a redirection so clear even Mei-Mei beside you ends up chuckling.
"You'll get used to it, 'm afraid" He replies, and smiles as though you've just said something particularly witty. He leans closer, peering at Kugisaki, who is dozing off. He whistles, and grins. "Saw her playin with my Megumi, and the Itadori's little Yuji. The three o' them get on better than peas in a pod"
'My Megumi'? "I had no idea you had a son" Your tongue tithers, without your consent. Inwardly, you curse yourself. The last thing you want to do is invite him for conversation. But by the way Satoru makes himself comfortable on the picnic blanket affirms the dread in your stomach. He's here to stay.
You've heard Kugisaki speak on this infamous Megumi before. Black spiky hair, sullen little frown, so glum you wouldn't have been able to guess that Satoru was father even if your life was on the line.
"A daughter too" The sheriff gives you another one of those ear splitting grins. He sombers rather quickly, and pats the space on the blanket between your bodies. "Though not by blood. Don't worry Miss, 'm an unmarried man"
Cousin?! Your eyes go as wide as saucers, looking between the two. They've both got that shocking head of white hair and the height to match, but thats where the similarities between them end.
"Early bird gets the worm, and allat" Satoru waves her off, eyes not leaving yours once. He catches you staring and offers a smile. He leans in to whisper conspiratorially. "Distant, very distant cousins. We Gojo's make her family look like street beggars"
You've seen Mei-Mei's family. So that only leaves one question : just how powerful is the Gojo family?
Mei-Mei, who has always been prideful and especially about her family, rises easily to the bait. "As powerful as you are...and yet you've become only the Sheriff of a small town" she says, voice soft but no less cutting. She stands, dusting away invisible dirt. "How unfortunate for you"
To make matters worse, Satoru only laughs—and doesn't look insulted one bit.
She turns her head and nods down primly at you. "Take care. I'll be sure to see you for next Sunday's charity brunch"
She isn't asking. Mei-Mei never does. But you have nothing else to do, and Sundays are more boring than you'd like to admit. So you agree, and Mei-Mei murmurs something that sounds like good luck.
Pleased, Satoru watches her stalk off. You're alone with him, you realize. Sure, there might be people present and Kugisaki nodding off against your stomach...but everyone is too busy pretending they don't see him rather than doing something about it.
"Ah! Right!" Satoru says suddenly, snapping his fingers to draw your attention. "Was wonderin if you'd like to come over tonight. Can bring the little Missus—she an' Megumi can play. Might even get along with Tsumiki"
He can't be serious.
"Sheriff," You say, slowly, because you can't understand why he isn't able to just get it. "While that sounds like a mighty fine offer, I'm afraid I can't do that."
"Why not?" He asks, lightning quick. His eyes are wide, like he truly doesn't understand. Good Lord above, he's going to make you spell it out for him, isn't he?
"My husband wouldn't think it proper for me to be alone with an unmarried man at his place of residence"
Satoru chuckles at that. "Your husband ain't as obsessed with propriety as you are, Miss. And a damn shame that is"
Your spine straightens at the insult wedged between the ominous warning. But before you can think of something to say, the good sheriff cuts you off.
"Let's say...two people made a vow" Satoru begins, brim of his hat obscuring his features. "And if one person ain't holding to that vow, say he's gettin it from somewhere else—what does that mean for the person who still is? Shouldn't they get to mess aroun' a little? Only fair"
The meaning is unmistakable now. You've never had an inkling on whether or not your husband was faithful. You've always just...trusted him. But now that Satoru's put this nugget of doubt inside your head, you can't stop thinking about it.
Uncontrollably, your eyes slide down to Kugisaki, who is fully asleep now.
Most men wouldn't want a daughter. A girl can't carry on her daddy's name the same way a son can. You never questioned the fact that your husband loved Kugisaki. You won't do anything to change that.
"If there was a third party in that vow" You murmur, stroking her cheek softly, feeling the warmth of her skin. "Then, the unfaithfulness won't matter. Not when leaving means jeopardizing a child"
The sheriff looks disappointed with your answer. There's no other way to describe the knit between his brows and the frown of his lips.
"Ya'll are in more trouble than you realize" Satoru says ominously, and stands. He removes his hat from his head, holds it close to his chest. He shakes his head sadly—like he knows something you don't. "Damn shame. A good woman like you don't deserve it, not at all"
And then he's off, stalking back down the hill, turning heads with every step he takes.
You used to live in the city, before you married your husband. Your maiden family was a wealthy one from up north. They owned half of the crabbing ships on the coast. But the west...the west had gold. Gold your family desperately wanted.
So they married you off to your husband, who is only eight years older than you. He was newer money. No parents; no living family other than a handful of brothers that he didn't keep in contact with. And he brought you west.
Being married to him was not awful. There was no love there; but you were nearly forty. Love wasn't something you believed in anymore.
You convinced yourself, over the years, that this was for the better. Love was a fickle thing, bringing only temporary joy with a lifetimes worth of grief. You've heard about the things people do for love, and you want no part in it.
Besides. It's different for men than it is for women. A man can father an entire litter of bastards, and it won't damage his reputation one bit. Even if your husband was being unfaithful, there was nothing you could do about it.
You shake your head, pushing such thoughts away from your mind. Whatever deal your husband struck while away must have been a good one. He came back with an entire chest full of new clothes for Kugisaki. Dresses and pinafores and bloomers. Big bows, all in an assortment of pretty fabrics and colors. Lovely little shoes. A play- pretend tea set with real china.
Your gifts were simpler, but they held true to who you were. You never enjoyed large, lavish things. More books. Some bolts of fabric in colors you enjoyed. A little extra spending money. You weren't impressed by expensive jewelry, or useless trinkets. Not when your own father spoiled you plenty rotten yourself growing up.
But the high had lasted only for two days before he broke the news over dinner that he had another business trip to leave for.
You managed to hold your tongue. Kugisaki was loudly disappointed enough for both of you. And by then, it seemed too childish to nag your husband on top of your daughter's whining.
Instead, you'd be forced to pick up the shattered pieces of Kugisaki's heart. Again. Dealing with her foul temper and harsher words. Her tears and night terrors. And then her father will return just when you've gotten her into a sense of stability to wreck everything you've built with her.
A mother endures, you remind yourself, rolling out the dough for this week's bread.
Three sharp raps at the front door pull you from your mind. "I'll be there in a moment!" You call out, quickly wiping the flour from your hands onto your apron and tottering over to the door.
The wary smile drops from your face when you see the Sheriff standing on your doorstep. He removes his hat from his head, black, and presses it into his chest. Two men stand behind him, dressed the same.
"Sheriff...?" You prompt, feeling uneasy, eyes fearfully jumping between the men. Your hand flies out to steady yourself against the door. Something is wrong. You know it is. You just have no idea what. "Is everything alright?"
"'fraid not" Gojo says, at last, and inclines his head towards you. "Might we come in?"
Wordlessly, you step aside and let them in. Gojo, who has been to your house dozens of times, beelines towards the blue settee and makes himself at home. His fellow officers busy themselves with openly looking through your things.
"What's the meaning of this?" You ask, impatient, snatching a glass figurine out of one officers hands, fixing him with a glare.
"Your husband was found dead, Miss," Gojo says, voice somber and gentle. The glass shatters into a thousand pieces as it crashes to the floor.
One officer helps you down into a chair. The other, following the Sheriff's instruction, leaves and returns with a broom and pan.
"P-pardon..." You start to say, and then your mouth shuts. Then you open it again. For a while, nothing comes out. "Are you sure?"
Grimly, Gojo nods. "Verified the body myself" he says and begins to recall the grisly tale of how they happened upon his body.
Your husband was found, miles away from the train station, deep in the woods. He had been shot six times, though the town's doctor says that isn't the official cause of death.
The official cause of death was a severe blow to the head with a blunted weapon. So he had survived each and every one of those gunshot wounds. And he had laid there, likely for hours; unable to call out for help.
"Is it alright if I send them up there to your husband's office?" Gojo asks, all of a sudden, derailing from the tale.
"Huh?" You murmur, quite dumbly, shaking. "His office?"
Gojo's lips purse into a frown. "We don't get trouble around here, Miss. Not anymore. This was personal"
Personal. Not an accidental shooting. Not an unfortunate run-in with riff-raff or bandits near the train station. Bandits seem like such nasty business. No. This was personal.
Your husband was murdered.
Your finger shakes, but eventually you point to the stairs. "Hi-his office is the third down on the left. Take...take whatever you need"
There isn't an ounce of the flirty Gojo you remembered seeing at the family picnic. This must be the Sheriff. With steely blue eyes and a pen and paper out to take down your statement.
Do you know anyone who might have wanted your husband dead? No. Of course not. What about his work? What can you tell him about that? Not much. He doesn't tell you the happenstance's of what he does. When was the last time you saw him? Yesterday; when you sent him off to the train station with a kiss on the cheek and his breakfast to go.
"And how did he act, when he was leavin?" Gojo inquires, white strands obscuring his face from view in a way that frightens you. "Anythin that stood out to you?"
"I was busy" You whisper, choked and trying not to cry. "I had to get Kugisaki re-ready...uhm, ready for school. So I...I just told him I would see him when he got back" Only he never would be.
What if you had insisted on letting him take the carriage? What if you had just let Kugisaki be late, just this once? Would your husband still be alive today? Is this your fault?
What would happen to you and Kugisaki now?
Gojo stands just as the officers come back down with a box of items. His face is closed off, pensive. Whatever you've told him, it wasn't good enough. Clumsily, you stand to your feet as well. You try and take a peek at their faces, to see if their expressions betray anything. But they don't.
"We'll see ourselves out" He instructs, stopping you in the middle of the room when you try to walk them to the door.
"Gojo..." His name slips out of your mouth before you can think twice about it. He stops, and turns to look at you. You don't even know what it is you want to say.
Your face seems to say enough.
"Don't worry Miss, we'll find the bastards who did this" Gojo says, wild eyed and frantic. "In the meantime, if you ever need anythin, you know where to find me"
You spend the first four months of your deep mourning completely isolated from town.
You don't remember the funeral. Kugisaki was inconsolable, you think. Wouldn't let the preacher continue with the sermon. The Sheriff was kind enough to take her out for a few minutes. Four months, and thats all you can remember. A tiny snippet in time.
If it were up to you, you would retreat completely from life itself. Ironic how this ranch that once stifled you had become your sole refuge. You couldn't imagine yourself staying here for days on end, not to mention entire months; without conversation with another living person.
Nowadays, you hardly ever leave your chambers. If things get really bad, trapped too far inside your head, you sleep on the desk in your husband's office, where everything remains untouched. Well, besides the things that have been taken for the investigation, that is.
You spend every second of every day hoping for news from the Sheriff. He comes over occasionally, though he stays downstairs. Occasionally, you'll catch him, Kugisaki, and his children chasing each other around in the large backyard.
It's far from proper. It rubs you the wrong way because you don't know when the behavior started. When Gojo went from announcing his presence to just coming in, whisking your daughter through the house. The sound of Kugisaki's laughter drifting throughs the floors and walls.
All you know is that the Sheriff comes over. He scrapes away at the molding grief threatening to choke Kugisaki—and for a few hours, a few times a week, things seem like they could be normal again.
But he never comes upstairs, where you lurk. Which means he doesn't have any updates on the case. Which means every hour he spends with Kugisaki in your house, is another hour your husband's killer is on the loose.
A break in monotony comes in the form of Ieiri. You're shocked to see her, the first visitor that isn't the Sheriff or the servants. You wonder if her visit is unplanned, or if you accepted her invitation for lunch and simply forgotten about it.
You don't let her come upstairs. You can't let her see what you've become. But as you gaze at your reflection in the window, you realize that she'll be able to tell anyway. You're gaunt, for one. Skin pallid and clammy. You get plenty of sleep (not much to do otherwise), but there are deep; dark circles underneath your eyes anyway.
Ieiri is kind enough not to say anything about it.
The sun threatens to blind you. The grass is soft beneath your boots as you lead her out to the patio. She's donned in a simple white day dress. No frivolous lace or bows. Only a blue hairpin and a gold necklace adorn her throat.
What a pair you make. You, dressed in a plain black muslin dress, bonnet shielding your face from the sun. Ieiri, a maiden in white. Two opposing ends of the mourning period.
"Do you mind if I smoke?" She asks, already pulling out her tin and a match.
"Not at all" Your voice is slightly croaky for months of disuse. You wave away her look of concern, turning your head blankly towards the stables as the smell of tobacco rises in the air.
"I'm sorry about what's happened" Ieiri says, pulling you back into the present. You've received countless letters and compliments dictating the same. But she is the first person who says them and means it.
"Thank you," You demure, with an incline of your head. If you could cry, you would. But you haven't had the tears to summon in months. "Could you tell me...about what's been happening in town?"
Ieiri snorts. "I didn't take you for a gossip, you naughty thing" But she smiles as she says it, and it makes you feel like you can smile too. So you do, wavering and short. But a smile nonetheless. "Luckily for you dear, I happen to always be in the wrong place at the wrong time. Now, I'm not telling you anythin, till I see you eat a bite of this food. Come on now, just a lil..."
Another nervous smile. You break off a bite of your sandwich and push it into your mouth. True to her coaxing word, Ieiri begins the tale of an on-going riff between two young socialites in town. A friendship rift caused by a man of all things.
"And, to be frank" Ieiri says, putting out her cigarette and lighting another. She coughs, waving away the smoke, and then grins. "I don't even see him as much of a looker. Both girls can do much better. Men can come and go easily, but it's friendships that test time itself"
Truth is, Ieiri puts Mei-Mei to shame when it comes to gossip. She isn't malicious about it, the way Mei-Mei often is. It's just as she said : Ieiri just happens to be right there front and center every time.
You're interrupted by the sound of Kugisaki's excited yelling from the inside the house, and the bob of her shadow through the windows.
"She seems to be doing better" Ieiri drawls, non-judgmental, a soft smile on her face. "I lost my parents at a young age too. But I wasn't handlin it well at all"
"I'm sorry" You say, automatically. You've lost your husband, yes. But both of your parents are alive and well. They'll live for a long time yet. "How did...what happened?"
"Bandits." Ieiri says shortly, and puts out her cigarette just as Kugisaki comes into the back yard.
Kugisaki wanders up to you warily. She gives you a stiff hug and then melts into your body with a sigh.
You hug her back, twice as hard, unable to stop the gunshot wound of a noise that escapes you. "Your hair..."
Your daughter freezes. Out of guilt or admission, you cannot tell.
"I cut it" She says, sounding too mature for a nine year old. Kugisaki pulls back from your embrace and squares her shoulder. "Do you like it?"
"Your father loved your hair..." You whisper brokenly, carding your fingers through the now blunt ends. It's the wrong thing to say, but you can't help it, mourning the long brown strands that reminded you so dearly of your late husband. "When did you cut it?"
How hadn't I noticed?
"A month ago" Your daughter states, looking unsure of herself. "Satoru helped me. He said you might like it, if I did acted mature and helped out more. That you might come down. And it worked!"
Your brows nearly jump right off your head at the mention of Kugisaki's casual use of the Sheriff's first name. But you don't mention that. You also don't mention that you leaving your bedroom for the first time since the funeral has more to do with Ieiri than Gojo.
You don't like it. Not at all. Gojo whispering suggestions into Kugisaki's ear. Going behind your back. You appreciate him for what he's done for you...when you...weren't well. But already you can feel yourself feeling better. You're ready to be Kugisaki's mother again.
Because setting up playdates with your daughter is one thing. Acting like her father is another.
Ieiri's eyes meet yours over the rim of her teacup. If she thinks the boundaries between you, your daughter and the towns beloved Sheriff are inappropriate—she wisely keeps her mouth shut.
The next time the Sheriff waltzes over, you plan to do it then. The words are on the tip of your tongue. Send Kugisaki out of the room. Gently broach the subject. Tell him you are eternally grateful for his help and suggest that if he wants to continue to bring your children together, he should act more like a stranger and less like the man of the house.
Your house.
It never quite happens the way you plan. And the longer you put it off, the more out of control Gojo gets. The more unspoken boundaries he continues to cross.
One morning, you come down for breakfast and there are five plates set instead of two. Gojo's turned over all the mirrors, and he's sitting with Tsumiki and Kugisaki, giving them matching hairstyles. His son, Megumi, stands off to the side, steadily observing.
Gojo, sitting in your painting room. Gojo, reading the newspaper and sitting on your front porch. Gojo, coming back from the henhouse, or dragging bales of hay out to your horses. Or helping your servants water your garden, for God's sake.
Until you realize it's been a year and two months since your husband has died. Until you realize that Kugisaki has stopped mourning three months early. Until you realize that while Gojo seems to be over more times than he isn't, you still haven't heard a single update about what's happened to your husband. Until you realize that Kugisaki has that same starry-eyed awed expression and admiration for Gojo that she has for her father.
Had. Had for her father.
It's Gojo, surprisingly, who broaches the subject.
You've just come back from a day of errands. First the general grocer, then the doctors to pick up Kugisaki's hay fever tonic and then at the millers for flour and sugar.
When you come home, you aren't shocked to see an extra pair of shoes in the foyer. What you are surprised to see, is the lack of them. Panic laces through your body like a taught wire. You set your things down onto the island bar, tearing through the house for your daughter. She isn't there. Why is Gojo here, and Kugisaki isn't?
You find Gojo in your garden, sipping on a glass of sweet iced tea, humming to himself. He arches a brow when he sees you, and does little else.
"Where's Kugisaki?" You ask, chest heaving with exertion. Your eyes are wild with worry, you know, sweat beading along the back of your neck.
"With a younger cousin of mine. Yuta. Nice boy" He explains, casually. "Babysittin" he has the nerve to add, and then winks.
"You didn't think to ask her mother before you allow her to leave with someone else?" You snap, shaking. What if Kugisaki is kidnapped? What if she's hurt? You can't afford to lose her too. "Sheriff, you forget yourself"
"I'm really gettin peeved with you, darlin" Gojo says, brushing your concerns aside as though they mean nothing, though there's a sudden sharp glimmer in his eyes that makes you hesitate. "Satoru. My name is Satoru. Sa-to-ru"
"My daughter—" Glacier blue eyes snap to your face. He takes a step closer and stares you down. "Where is she?"
"I told you" The Sheriff replies, hand too low on your lower back as he urges you inside. "With a babysitter."
"Where's Moira?" You ask instead, as Gojo settles behind the counter and proceeds to pour you a glass of tea. He even goes as far as to rifle through the ice box for something for you to snack on.
"Had to let her go" He answers, back turned as your blood freezes.
"You fired my servant?" The words are caught in your throat, and come out all weird. Breathy, almost. The nerve of this man. This has gone on too far. Gojo simply rounds the table, places your food in front of you and then kisses the side of your head.
"She was stealin the silver" He murmurs, eyes flickering down to your lips. "She shouldn't be around the kids, or you"
The kids, he says. Like you're married.
"I can determine whats best for Kugisaki and I" You grit out. "You are not my husband. You do not determine what goes on in my house. I appreciate the help you've given me but I think you and I need to alienate ourselves from one another"
You breath raggedly. There. Now the words are out. You've said your piece. Things can finally go into a sense of normalcy now.
"Alienate ourselves" The Sheriff repeats, smiling into your hair before stepping away. He isn't listening. No. He isn't taking you seriously, you realize. He doesn't care. "You need me" He says.
"I—"
"When's the last time you've paid a bill for this place?" Gojo asks, and before you can pin down the thought that you haven't; he continues. "How much money has your husband left in the bank for you? How much land comes with this property? How much are you payin your stablehands? How many are hired? Who's the gardener? Do you know anythin about this house, Miss?"
The questions fly at you. Too fast for you to even think of a lie or a rebuttal against them. Each one strikes a vital chord in your defense. Each makes you realize just how little of a control you've had on things.
"The thing is, that piece of shit didn't save you a single penny" Gojo answers his own question, uncaring of the way your heart plummets to your stomach. "He's got a second account, sure. But all of that money went to his son"
Son.
"You see" The Sheriff says, drumming his fingers down on the table as your nerves threaten to make you fall apart. "Your husband has led a second life. He's got another wife and a set of little brats with another woman further south. His son's older than Kugisaki. Makes me think it's been happenin since before you entered the picture. Ever wonder what happened to half your savins that was meant for that nice house north of here? Two...three years ago?"
Ice floods your veins. "Stop" You croak, eyes wet with tears. "Gojo, stop"
How does he know about that? Any of it? How long has he known? Why hasn't he said anything about it before.
His hand latches onto yours, and then skims further up your wrist onto the cuff of your dress. "While you've been sittin here, faithful picture of a lady, that asshole has been funnelin your money to another family. But the ruse has to come up eventually. And the husband of your husband's affair is affiliated with some bad, bad men. The kind I don't like stayin around in my town"
Bandits. The picture comes together.
The night your husband said he had another business trip...there was no business. And how did he act, when he was leavin? The Sheriff's words swirl in your ears like a bad omen. Perhaps he knew, and wanted to run. Or perhaps that man had managed to catch your husband by surprise.
You choke down a sob. But the tears come anyway, and Gojo pulls you into his chest. His broad palm rubs down your back, hot even through the layers of your clothes. Searing. You want to push him away. You try to. He only clucks his tongue and holds you all the more tighter for it.
"Haven't I done right by you?" Gojo asks, peppering kisses against the side of your face. His hands don't wander, not how you'd expect them to. You wonder how you're supposed to shove him off if he decides to go further. "You never worry about anythin when I'm here, don't you want it to be like that all the time?"
"What do you want?" You finally grit out, putting some much needed space between the two of you.
"I need," Gojo corrects "A show of faith. I ain't a bad man. I don't wanna force myself on ya, wasn't how I was raised"
You say nothing, refusing to betray your faults. Inwardly, your mind spins. If what the Sheriff is saying is true, there's no money and there hasn't been for a long time. How can you raise Kugisaki and keep the property at the same time? Where will you go if you can't?
Gojo boops you on the nose with his finger, bringing you out of your perilous thoughts. "How long do you plan on mournin that bastard, anyway? It's already been a year. You can take another husband now. I waited, see?"
"I miss seein you in color" He continues, playing with the edge of your bodice. "All this black, doesn't suit ya."
A show of faith.
"You want me to marry you," You conclude, voice shaky and small.
"That would be nice, yes" Gojo hums, as though it was all your idea. Wolfishly, he grins at you. Darts forward, and steals a proper kiss. His lips are sweet from the tea. "Jus' think about it some, okay? Got some loose ends to tie up, so I'll be gone for some time. When I come back...."
He tugs at the hem of your bodice again. "This better be gone, you hear?"
Even before Gojo left, you knew what your answer will be.
You've never worked a day in your life. Your parents taught you wifely duties with the expectation that you'd never have to work a day in your life. Even things that lesser women had to learn, managing books, the household. Those were beyond you. Your mother had servants to do that for her and she expected the same for you.
The second day, Ijichi drives you out to the bank in the big city half a days journey out. Just as the Sheriff said, your accounts are pitifully low. Not enough to last on your own, if Gojo decides to take his good will away.
You want to ask around for work. You could be a seamstress, or maybe the assistant to one. But something in you won't. You step into town and you notice the stares. The way people seem to pause before speaking with you.
Someone genuinely saw you coming and crossed the street, eyes staring down at the cobblestone.
You know, that even before you ask, no one here will hire you. Not with the metaphorical blood on your hands. You'd climb the highest roof in town and shout out your innocence if you believed it would have an inkling of changing anything.
You remembered your first thoughts about this tiny little town. Quiet. Unassuming. So unlike what you were used to. The people here were tight-knit. Close lipped. And you had broken that fragile trust by bringing your husband and his demons together into their depths. Their cautious, derisive looks say enough.
No one here trusts you.
A week later, you hear news from Kugisaki that Gojo will be back soon.
"And you like the Sheriff?" You ask, suddenly. Something about your tone makes your daughter freeze, owlish brown eyes peering up at you.
"Satoru's great!" Kugisaki chirps over her dinner, head tilted curiously to the side. "Don't you like him too, Mama? Everyone says he's sweet on you"
Do they now? "Who have you heard that from?"
"Miwa from primary school says her mama says that he does" She replies; with utmost seriousness. "And she's a love fortune teller. She looks at the cards and tells you your fortune! It's very serious, Mama"
Miwa's mother should mind her own business, you think sourly.
"And if we were to live with the Sheriff...with Satoru—" Your grip on the fork tightens and you force a smile onto your face. "Would you like that? If Satoru and I married?"
Kugisaki's face splits into a grin. Your heart plummets to the bottom of your stomach and dread washes over you like freezing cold water.
She wants this you realize.
Aren't you afraid, you want to ask. He could replace your father. Don't you remember how you used to adore him so? The thought makes you reel back. Who are you; to seek comfort from your daughter? This shouldn't be about you. It's about Kugisaki. It's about making sure she's safe.
And by law, that's exactly what marriage to Satoru will do.
The day you go to meet Satoru, you don a blue dress. Maybe the color will soften him. Maybe you won't catch a glimpse of the man lurking underneath the veneer, if you can satisfy him in this small way.
It feels...unnatural, to be seen wearing color again. The stares you earned dressed in black seem to double, triple. Everyone seems to look at you and know exactly where you're going.
Mei-Mei would remark with a smile, about the sudden abrupt end to your mourning.
It's all in your imagination, you want to think. But Satoru's servants don't seem shocked at all to see you. Rather, its more like they were expecting you.
Like you were right on time.
"Satoru!" Kugisaki sings, loud, as she crosses the foyer. Seconds later, the man of the hour rounds the corner. Your daughter leaps at him, and he catches her easily; spinning her round and round until she's dizzy and begs for mercy.
You stand in the middle of the room like a voyuer, waiting for him to finally acknowledge you.
And he does. He breathes, a cross between a sigh of want and relief when he spots the blue and white day dress. The lack of the veil and bonnet. Your gloveless hands. And he smiles.
"Kugisaki, Megumi and Yuji are down at the stables" It's a clear dismissal if you've ever heard one. "Tsu-Tsu ain't here right now"
Playfully put-out, your daughter groans. "Yuji better not have taken Straw" she says, and wriggles out of his arms to race down to the stables.
Silence stretches on for a full minute. Then, two more.
Finally, Satoru speaks. "Glad to you're no longer mournin. Got tired of seein you in those dreadful things. Now you look more like yourself"
There a smug undertone to his words. You should say something. You know he's expecting you to, but you just can't.
"Why don't I show you aroun'?" He asks, grabbing you by the arm.
"That would be nice" You demure. If Satoru won't bring attention to the elephant in the room, you won't either.
As the Sheriff leads you through his opulent home, you begin to understand the sheer differences in status between you and him. You nearly get lost in the rooms, their sheer sizes, the way lavishness seems to drip in excess. Even your maiden-home, the richest you've ever been, wasn't nearly as wealthy as this.
"And this," Satoru purrs next to your ear, "Is our room"
His hand settles on your middle back, gently nudging you inside. Like the other rooms, this one oozes wealth. An ensuite bathroom. Two ensuite closets (for the Miss, Satoru says, and winks). A large bed. A set of beautiful glass windows that overlook the estate and its wonderful landscaping.
We Gojos make her family seem like street-beggars.
"You have a very lovely home" You tell him, and mean it, turning around. Only, Satoru's standing way too close, crowding you against the window. "Satoru...?"
Satoru groans, erotically, dropping his face into the crook of your neck. "Finally, been tryin to get you to say my name like that this whole time..."
He nuzzles into your throat. Like a puppy. You freeze up once more as his hands travel up and down your body. He's tactile, thats for sure. You can't help but pale in the face of his desire.
"S-Satoru..." You gasp, writhing as his hands begin to unlace the back of your bodice. You wrap your fingers around his wrist to still his advancements. "Stop. A moment; please. This isn't proper—"
Satoru cackles into your skin. "You can drop the shy act now, darlin. It's not like I don't know what I'm gettin into. Come on, don't tell me you only fucked that bastard while you were tryna make Kugisaki? You never did it for fun? Cause it felt good?"
Heat blooms across your face, worms its way down your neck and settles down in your lower stomach.
When you haven't said anything for a minute, Satoru stills. Pulls back from sucking a bruise into your skin like it physically ails him to be separated from you.
"You really haven't...?" He asks, eyes so dark they frighten you.
"Sex is done so that a woman ends up pregnant" You warble. A slow, almost mad, grin spreads onto his cherubic features.
"Well, I'll still make sure you end up pregnant, if that's wha you want" He drawls, and unzips your skirt, yanking it down to your hips. "Can't lie and say I ain't thought of it. A little you runnin around. Long as you don't mind Megumi bein my heir, I'll give you a litter of 'em"
You bat his hand away when you feel his fingers reach under your skirt from behind you. The mall is packed today, filled with others browsing and looking for something to buy.
“No panties?” Caleb trails after you, hand slipping under again. His fingers trail up to your hips, feeling the waistband. “Hm… let me guess. Your red lace ones with the bow.”
“Stop touching me,” you hiss, mortified that he knows which pair you’re wearing just by touch alone. “Wait ‘till we get home. I haven’t found the shirt I wanted yet and you said you’d let me stay as long as I wanted today.”
“I know, I know, don’t throw a fit,” he hums, hand settling to rest against your hip. “What, I can’t touch my girlfriend?”
“Sister,” you correct. “We’re in public. Stop acting weird, what if someone like Gideon sees us?”
Caleb shrugs, not bothering to answer as he follows you towards another store.
You go through the racks, humming to yourself as you browse the colourful array of clothing. Suspicious of the silence behind you, you turn to look behind you.
“…Caleb,” you whine. The cold case of his phone brushes your inner thigh, unshamefully keeping you still by your waist when he realizes he's been caught. As you squirm, he repositions his phone under your skirt to take another picture of the fabric pressing against your plump folds. “You pervert…”
Caleb quickly pockets his phone with a smile as he looks down at you with innocent eyes. "What? I was just adjusting your skirt. It looked crooked." He reaches out to 'fix' your non-existent wrinkles, his fingers deliberately brushing against your skin.
You feel your face heat up, embarrassed that he took a picture in such a crowded store with shoppers just feet away. "Delete it. Now." Your voice comes out breathier than intended, which only makes his smile widen.
His arms wrap around your wrist, tugging you closer to press your back against his chest. “I have a better idea.”
—
“I hate you!” The public bathroom is empty, the only sounds coming from Caleb’s slick hand and spit covered cock.
He grunts as he glides his thumb against his throbbing, flushed tip. “Didn’t you say you wanted that top? I’ll buy it for you, just listen to gege.”
You're holding your skirt and panties stiffly away from your body by the waistband, open for him to stare all he wants as he hunches over you. “Yes but…”
Caleb groans, fingers tightening around his length as he continues to jerk off. His eyes are trained on your puffy folds, imagining how it'll look after he finishes on them. "Come on, lil’ sis. You can have whatever you want... just stay still." He bites his lip, eyes flicking up to see your cutely scrunched face as you fidget, your skirt riding up.
“This is embarrassing…!” You complain, aware that it will probably turn him on further.
He ignores your protest, his breathing becoming heavier as his rhythm picks up. "You're doing so good for me, pips." His free hand reaches out to squeeze your thigh desperately. "Be a good girl for big brother and stay like this a little longer."
“Hurry up,” you hiccup, cunt clenching as you watch him pleasure himself at the sight of you. His cock is leaking precum all over his fingers, trailing down the veins of his length and towards his full, heavy balls. The large amount of slick pools down to the dark patch of hair at his base, staining the zipper of his pants.
“So impatient… fuck. I'm gonna cum. Let me see your tight lil’ cunny, baby. Still sore from yesterday?” Panting and bucking his hips into his hand, he carefully aims his tip towards the gap you’ve been holding open to unload thick, sticky ropes, his warm cum latching onto your panties and chubby folds.
Riding out his high, Caleb head tilts back as he squeezes the tip of his engorged cock trying to rub out every last drop of cum. “Fuck, lil’ sister, you look the prettiest when covered in big brother’s cum.”
You bite back a whine, focused on the degrading aftermath of his cooling semen clinging to your skin. This is humiliating, you think to yourself, as you watch him tuck his softening cock back into his pants to zip up. He adjusts your panties and skirt for you, patting your sensitive mound through the damp fabric.
“Let’s go get that top, baby sister.” Caleb presses a kiss to your temple. “Keep those panties full for me, yeah? Maybe later we won’t need lube.”

Every new years your father hosts a party in his home to celebrate new beginnings. The party has its usual guests-important clients, business partners and their families, or any socialite with a good standing in your father’s network. This year, however, is a lot more different. Instead of entertaining a big crowd, he’s reduced it to a small gathering with only his close friends… and you. You’ve heard of their names in passing, often when he takes his personal calls while you’re lounging in his office. Those times were during his office hours, a long and boring part of your day when you’ve come home from school and you’re not allowed out of his sight to keep you in check. He insists it’s for your safety, and while you want to argue that you’re old enough to do things on your own, that recent incident lingers in the back of your mind so you’re left silently agreeing with him.
The dress you’re wearing for the occasion is tight, and a bit short in your opinion. Inappropriate even, for a gathering composed of grown men and just one girl. But it was a gift from your father, so you hold your tongue. If he approved, then you suppose his friends wouldn’t mind. It’s not like they don’t have women their age at their disposal should they wished.
Their conversation is long and dull, you’re left sipping at your glass (not champagne, just juice for the girl of course) absentmindedly as they talk. If you brought your phone out to text your friends, you’re due for a lecture about manners later so you resist doing so.
“And what has the little darling been up to?” You startle at the mention of your name. Uncle Rafayel tilts his head charmingly, mostly asking out of politeness, you assume.
“Just school,” you mumble. No need for them to know about your mischievous past times.
“She’s been a very good student,” your father reaches over to pet your head. You bat it away with a grumble. “Just easily…distracted. All she needs is a firm hand, that’s all.”
Confused, you look at your father. He dons his usual smirk, but something is off. He takes a sip of his drink while his other hand tightens at your waist. Just what is he hiding?
His friends chuckle in response, and the conversation is moved along. You can’t help but feel smaller somehow, sitting beside your father while his friends talk about you like you’re not in the room. Something in your gut is telling you to exit the room and find solace in your room upstairs, away from everyone.
You finish your drink in one go, eager to make an escape but your tongue feels heavy and your eyelids droop. The room feels so cold, and your father is the only thing keeping you warm…. Maybe a nap wouldn’t hurt… surely neither of them would mind.
As you lean towards your father with your body relaxing against his, he scoops you up in front of his guests and puts you in his lap. You’re far gone now, not a sound in the world able to rouse you from your slumber. Zayne puts his glass down to finally speak.
“Did you put too much? I told you one dose is enough.” He clicks his tongue in disapproval.
“My little girl is a lightweight, she’ll be fine.” Sylus responds. He looks down at your sleeping form fondly. His hands skim the sides of your waist before unzipping your dress. “It would be better if she doesn’t remember any of this.” The dress drops to the floor.
“Not yet at least.”
—
You feel cold. Naked. You try to grip for anything warm but there are no blankets, just a pair of arms around your shivering form. You try to open your eyes but they feel so heavy, it feels good to keep sleeping but something wet and firm is squirming between your legs.
“She’s waking up.” You hear someone whisper, but you can’t tell who.
“She’s not. She can barely move.” Your brows furrow trying to recognize who’s speaking.
The tongue lapping at your pussy moves up to your throbbing clit, causing you to gasp in respond. A strong grip turns your head to the left. Someone is pushing their tongue into yours, pulling you into a one-sided deep kiss. You can only moan in response.
“Shit, she’s close.”
“Keep holding her legs, I want it all seen on the video.”
“Send it to the group chat after.”
The hand lets go of your jaw giving you a moment to breathe, but someone else takes it instead to pull you into another kiss.
You can feel your legs shake while you reach your limit. Your hands claw at the person’s legs holding you as the tongue digs itself further in your clit and speeds up. Someone curses, a glass shatters, and your eyes open as you reach your climax. With blurry eyes you look down to see who was responsible for your orgasm, but you only get a flash of brown hair before your eyes droop once more before you fall into unconsciousness.
Sylus is shushing you to fall asleep again, petting your hair while he whispers praises in your ear, uncaring if you hear them or not. Rafayel moves Caleb aside to kneel in front of you and unzips his pants.
“Think she can take two of us?” He says as he rubs himself. Sylus spreads your legs wider and presents you to his friend.
“Not tonight.” He glances at Zayne filming with his phone, his one hand lazily jacking himself off to the erotic sight of his daughter getting taken advantage of. “Let’s save the harder stuff later when she awake.”
Rafayel scoffs but moves on, too eager to get inside. “You showoff. You’re still passing your daughter off to us, sick bastard.”
Despite his words he pushes himself inside you in one deep thrust. You jostle in your sleep, but you remain steady in your father’s hold as his friend fucks you at a steady pace. The room is filled with the sounds of your slick walls slapping against Rafayel’s hips.
Sylus, unable to remain as a passive participant for long, tilts your head for kiss while he reaches down to play with your clit. With the added friction, your pussy clamps down tighter on Rafayel’s cock, causing him to groan in response. He fastens his pace, holding your waist until he finally cums deep inside of you. Your father clicks his tongue before lifting you off his friend, cum dripping out of your hole as he spreads your folds wide.
