i am an artist and i have facial dysmorphia
i used to be embarrassed because i mostly draw my own face, i took it as me being self-centered or selfish, but i couldn’t stop drawing myself. one of the reasons why i draw my face and myself so much is because i don’t have ocs and it’s the one thing i feel like i know how to draw. the other reason is my facial dysmorphia.
i realized that whenever my facial dysmorphia has bad moments, i pick up a pen or a pencil and draw myself. because my muscle memory knows what i look like, or more specifically, it knows how i want to portray myself artistically. and subconsciously, that helps me. i still sometimes feel embarrassed about the amount of self portraits i’ve done, but know i understand my habits better
the reason im sharing this is because out there, there is probably someone with the same experience, or someone who could get help from trying out my habits. even if you aren’t an artist, try studying your face and learning to draw yourself. look at it objectively, because you are art, you’re just putting you down on paper. it can work for body dysmorphia as well :)
and at the end of the day, i can draw what and who i want. it is my sketchbook, and i’m going to draw the things that i find joy in, even if it happens to be my own face lol
