The Progression of Kaidan Alenko
Mass Effect Weapons
I have many problems w Bioware, but they could have made Kaidan an asshole due to his difficult past to appeal to cishet male gamers, but no, instead, they made him a sensitive, kind, loving man. It’s one of the best shit they’ve done
She thought she was over it. Six fucking years had passed. She never talked about it–there was no need to talk about it. In the days and months right after she had done enough talking about the disaster to last a lifetime. Shepard had passed every psych eval the Alliance threw at her, impressed superiors and subordinates alike with her resilience. “Shepard’s a strong one,” they would say.
When a thresher maw, a fucking thresher maw tosses the Mako into the air like a tennis ball, Shepard doesn’t feel strong. When her team climbs out after having shot the damn thing to hell, Shepard doesn’t feel resilient. She doesn’t feel like a goddamn hero when she rails at Kaidan–Lieutenant Alenko for telling her to snap out of it and drive. He fucking saved their asses and all she can do is scream at him for being out of line and breaking the chain of command. It’s bullshit and they both know it. It’s not Kaidan’s fault, but he’s there, within range, and a visible target.
Later they return to the Normandy, and Shepard contains herself in her cabin. She should own up to her behavior, call him up, and apologize like a goddamn adult, but she can’t allow herself to think about it right now. Every time she does she’s back in her makeshift quarters, rolling out her sleeping mat for the night in a creepy-ass abandoned colony when the ground starts to shake. She’s trapped like a rat in a cage, and all she can hear is the screams. All she can taste is the blood in her mouth when she bit her tongue to keep from screaming herself. She can still smell the acid and the stench of it eating away at the corporal who just hit on her five minutes before. She can still feel the throbbing in her legs as she crept on an endless march back to the landing zone to call for help.
Back on Earth, when she had bad days, she would run from one city block to the next until she collapsed next to a dumpster somewhere. On the Normandy, Shepard doesn’t have that luxury. She doesn’t even have a fucking punching bag. Pacing around her cabin just makes her feel worse, so she settles for screaming herself hoarse into her pillow, and punching her mattress.
Shepard’s not over Akuze. She wonders if she ever will be.
Eh. Fuck it. Here’s my most known Mass Effect fic, for N7 Day. (I have more fics coming. They’re just not ready yet)
OMG this is amazing. I read something today about people getting upset because Shep was written having a reaction like this and I just have to hijack this for a moment because this is a beautiful illustration of a Shepard who’s human and still capable of being the hero. Let Shepard be fucked up and have PTSD and deal with it in healthy and unhealthy ways off-duty. Let it affect the ways they react in combat. Let it bleed through and color them and shape them and make them something different from what they’d been before. Let them not be okay. It’s canon. In ME1, before Ilos, Shepard isn’t in their cabin. They’re in the middle of the damn mess hall next to the med bay, where anyone on their crew can see them clearly dejected and just at the end of their rope. Hope’s lost. They’re not dealing with it. They’re not the commander or the Spectre in that moment. They’re just Shepard. And they’re Not Okay. If you romance Jacob in ME2 (which I don’t generally recommend, but this is the one redeeming factor), he’s the only one who asks if she’s okay and how she’s handling the coming back from the dead thing and Shepard can tell him she isn’t. Shep is Not Okay in ME2. The thing is, though, they’re not going to just go around telling people because they know the crew needs to look up to them and they have no one else they can really trust with it. So if no one asks, no one sees it. In ME3, whether an LI or not, Garrus is playing mother hen for a reason. Shepard is now consistently showing signs that at least someone (and an alien, no less) who’s served with them throughout the war can see that they are Not Okay. “Wear and tear,” he calls it. “You need a clear head,” he tells them. Shep lets Liara see it, too, and she asks about it. They show Miranda. They aren’t trying to hide it anymore. Figuratively, they’re constantly in the mess hall now, sitting by the lockers. Shep isn’t sleeping. Shep’s having nightmares. Shep’s worried and afraid and just because the only time you see them shed a tear is if you romanced Thane doesn’t mean they don’t. And it started with trauma. Our Shepards come to us with backgrounds that would traumatize any reasonable person. They may be remarkably strong-willed, but that just means they can push through. It doesn’t mean they can’t break. It doesn’t mean they can’t reflect back on it. It doesn’t mean that the stoic face we see in the game is the only one they ever wear. Let Shepard scream. It makes them human.
“Shep’s worried and afraid and just because the only time you see them shed a tear is if you romanced Thane doesn’t mean they don’t.”
I. Am. Floored.
Garrus: Batarians took the first hit, not much left of them
Shepard:
Have you ever finished a video game that you put so much time into and the ending left you so emotionally scarred that you had to take a step back from life to mourn.
Stand fast. Stand strong. Stand together.
I’m in love with Shenko being in love. ;~;
when you’re playing andromeda and you’re nearing a camp w/ enemies but you’re not in the mood to get out of the nomad atm
Shepard: Kaidan Alenko? My lieutenant? Pssshh, no! The regs against that al– *trips* *hundreds of pictures of Kaidan fall out of their pockets* W-What, this isn’t what this looks like I- *frantically tries to pick them up,sweating* look, just listen, I can explain- crap *thousands of photos scatter across the floor* fuck, hold on- just- I’m holding them for a friend- just listen! Maybe I should go…
There sure is.
Still asking the important questions.
Me, starting Mass Effect 2 for the Nth time: I've seen it all before, I know all the dialogs almost by heart. Nothing, literally nothing, can shake or impress me anymore.
Me, seeing Normandy SR-2 cutscene:
me: oh yeah my shep is totally paragade :) they’re not afraid to be ruthless when they need to be :)
also me:
i relate to this a lot
me: today i will play video game
*turns on video game*
me:
so are we all putting on our clown makeup hoping for an official mass effect remake announcement for n7 day tomorrow or is it just me
no mass effect playthru is full paragon, because we ALL choose the renegade interrupt to punch thru kai leng’s bitch-ass katana before we stab that ninja bucky barnes wannabe in the chest
