I didn’t actually get Hiravias in my party during my playthrough because I’m a dumbass, bu I’ll do my best! (sorry for the very werewolf-y spiritshifting)
The first time it happens isn’t long after he’s been cast out.
Hiravias has been a nomad his entire life but he has never feltadrift and lost like he does now, alone and half-dead still, mangledlike a catch that forgot to die. He staggers through the underbrush,tripping on roots he expected to be a little further away andstumbling into trees he didn’t see. He’s disoriented, scared,expecting a threat to sneak up on him at all time and all the more onedge for it.
He’s in no shape to hunt, no shape to be moving around, period. Hisonly hope would be to spiritshift but he hasn’t managed it sincethe first time he did it, cruel words in familiar voices echoingalongside beastly growls in his mind and stopping the shift before itcan take hold. So all he can do is walk and hope for something,anything, to get him out of there. His chances of survival may beslim, but the slightest whisper of possibility is still better thanthe certain death waiting for him if he ever stops. The forestdoesn’t know kindness or mercy. It doesn’t nurture; it only giveswhat you are willing to take, and right now? Hiravias doesn’t haveit in himself to take anything but the square feet of earth on whichhe lays, too hungry to sleep but too exhausted to keep moving.
Hunger growls like a beast in his belly, echoing his poundingheadache and the pulsing waves of pain from his wounds. He screws hiseyes shut and wishes, not for the first time, for things tomiraculously be better tomorrow.
When he wakes up, his stomach is full, his fur is caked in blood, andhis headache has been replaced by a feeling not unlike the satisfiedpurring of a giant cat.
The thankful prayer to Galawain feels bitter on his tongue, but it’sworth the warmth spreading in his chest, the tentative hope takinghold in his heart.
It’s not the last time it will happen, and he will be just asthankful and just as terrified every time.
