Sunshine OST 17. Mace is Dead
adeloes:
SHE SMILES PLEASANTLY, if only to present herself as merely vaguely threatening. â you sure are nosy. â she offers, sweeping past him and gesturing toward the room in question. the bathroom, in an empathetically grievous way, is nothing short of a disaster. supported by a sole hinge, the door slants itself in a manner that obscures a clear path beyond the threshold. with caution, she maneuvers past the door and stops short of the broken glass and a troublesome streak of blood near the tub. the rest appears to be inferior chaos in comparison ( fractured wood, burnt pages accumulated in a smoggy heap ) and adelyn wrinkles her nose, wholly unperturbed.
the sight of blood makes the hair at the nape of his neck stand on end, but he says nothing. she doesnât look wounded herself, walking without a limp or any sign of harm, self inflicted or otherwise. whatever had happened, she seems to be fine, and the rest is really none of his fucking business, as sheâd pointed out. but heâs not so tired anymore, walks through her apartment to lean against a wall out of her way and watch her.
â ----you need help cleaning up? â
NASA Astronomy Picture of the Day 2015 September 13
A Partial Solar Eclipse over Texas
It was a typical Texas sunset except that most of the Sun was missing. The location of the missing piece of the Sun was not a mystery – it was behind the Moon. Featured here is one of the more interesting images taken of a partial solar eclipse that occurred in 2012, capturing a temporarily crescent Sun setting in a reddened sky behind brush and a windmill. The image was taken about 20 miles west of Sundown, Texas, USA, just after the ring of fire effect was broken by the Moon moving away from the center of the Sun. Today a new partial solar eclipse of the Sun will be visible from Earth. Unfortunately for people who live in Texas, today’s eclipse can only be seen from southern Africa and Antarctica.
raachni:
fuckyoucapa;
The ship is not deceased. Oh, it flies close to a sun that Earth relies upon. How closely, with blood stinging every sense and smoke burning through the nostrils of her children. But there is still a soft beating life in icy chill, there is still comprehension and awareness in a mind shut out by pain and desperation. She spreads robes wide around her body as they move through what mess the humans here made of their brief home. Past food still resting cold upon their table. Lingering only briefly upon the woman, decayed now, but still sitting upon her thighs with something that was once green in her hands.
She sees all. Moves forward until luke warm oxygen fades into ice, and she sees what the children sing. With a ruffle of fabric she knees to rest her fingers against his icy face, pulled free from water. Slowly warming by the belly of a child.
“He will not die.” And as she speaks, the words ring true. ( No galaxy would dare deny her. )
the coolant tanks keep the flight computers from overheating, massive systems that take care of every facet of the ship, from oxygen carbon dioxide output, to water reclaimation, to the angle of the solar shields, to the trajectory of their flight path. it requires massive amounts of energy to keep all of these systems in tune, and thus massive amounts of heat is expended. the computers can only stay out of the tanks for maintenance one at a time for half an hour each, and then back into the coolant where it rests in liquid at below freezing temperatures.
mace has been half trapped like this for what feels like an eternity, metal biting into his leg, a layer of ice coating his body. his heart rate has slowed, his breathing so light it doesn’t even mist in front of his face anymore. everything is cold and dim, the blue light fading. it’s not so bad a way to die, he thinks when the pain starts to fade, his eyes shutting. there’s coolant in his bloodstream, pumping ice through his veins. not a bad way to die.
but he’s not dying, and something is dragging him back from the edge, the warmth painful. he gasps, shudders, the thin layer of ice on his body cracking and flaking away. his muscles spasm, blurred vision staring up at the figure that stands above him.
“who-- are---- you?”
pluto isn't a real planet shut up
“ out of the pair of us, which one is an actual astronaut trained by NASA? ”
siitka:
“ i’m sure about it, mace. i keep track.
mostly because he knows the other doesn’t. and it’s only made obvious by the way he shies away, taking a lean with his shoulders that gives the sense of distance between the two of them, like mace feels he needs that extra padding. yancy doesn’t try to close the distance, choosing to let mace make the space his own.
“ that’s not up to me. but we could start off with talking about the outburst reported to me yesterday? related to… i’m guessing tune-ups going poorly?
mace nods, drops his head a little guiltily. yancy’s got a way of actually making him feel bad for skipping out on these sessions, something he’d rarely felt during their mission training. he can barely remember the name of his shrink back on earth, and he’d been under orders from superiors to see him biweekly. on board icarus it’s at the discretion of kaneda and beckett that dictates just how often someone should be seeing the psych officer, how many hours might be recommended in the earth room.
he rubs a hand against his jaw, notes that the stubble is starting to turn into a beard. the memory of that particular outburst makes his brows furrow, irritation lining his blue eyes.
“ harvey was being a dick about whose turn it was to cook dinner, ” he answers after a moment, glancing up to look yancy in the eye. “ it was his turn, the schedule’s on the wall. ”
Honestly
calculatedfate:
‘ just your name. i apologize. i was. curious.
( this isn’t going over so smooth, but. you win some, you lose some. )
“ you don’t have to apologize. what d’you do around here, dixon? ”
( call him curious. )
revvupyourharley:
“Oh you’re not gonna stay?” She can’t help but tease again. It’s not that she’s trying to make him uncomfortable it’s just that it’s her way of flirting. She’s never been very good at it when she actually liked the person. It always came easy when it was meaningless but Mace? He was so much more than any guy she’d ever met. Gingerly she strips off her clothing, letting it fall to a damp pile on the ground. His shirt is tugged on first, followed by the shorts. And of course, she can’t help but blush at the idea of wearing his clothing, because heaven forbid Harley Quinn not act like a schoolgirl around him.
“You always have th’ neatest bed. Mine looks like a nest of blankets.” she calls, loading her clothes into his dryer. Sometimes she teases with the idea of inviting him to her place, but she could barely get him out of his place, let alone into someone elses. Besides, that would blow her cover of coming to see Boomer. When she appears in the kitchen doorway, Harley flashes the male a small smile, reaching out to pet the begging pup’s head. “I don’t know ‘bout you, but I think I pull of your clothes quite well.”
“Old habits die hard,” he calls back to her over his shoulder, and fuck if it isn’t the truth. He still runs by the same military schedule he has all his life. Call it a product of his upbringing. Literally born on base, raised on base, and then joined the air force a mere six hours after he turned 18. It’s not just habit. It’s practically instinct.
If he were the type to blush he might at the sight of her walking out of his room dressed in his clothes. The shirt hangs off of her; his shoulders are broad. And her thighs are skinnier than his, though still toned with muscle. But somehow he manages to make clothes that are three sizes too big for her look good, and he glances away, ignores the prickle of heat at his neck and finishes put their food on some plates. “Course you do,” he answers quietly with a faint smile, turning around and handing her her plate before heading to the table. “Better than I do, even,” he flashes her a quick smile, before settling down.
Finally, NASA is planning a manned mission to Mars.

starlxdy:
after a moment of companionable silence she breaks it as she nearly falls over from the force of laughter that escapes her. it’s enough to startle the older couple in the back & she waves a vague hand at them, floundering with the motion as she straightens herself up.
she wasn’t expecting a response & it’s evident as she turns her head in his direction, he’s got to be joking, she’s sure of it. while she’s not going to get in his face about it, she does that enough with patrons, but the look she fixates him with after she wipes the tears from her eyes means the topic will be brought up.
❛ that is such a serial killer response, you’re not actually one are you? fuck, don’t answer that. regardless of your POSSIBLE life style, no prejudice, the cook whips up a pretty mean hot stack ‘n hash-browns.‘
he blinks a bit at her sudden reaction, a brow arching at her laughter. she’s got a pretty laugh; it’s loud and unapologetic, turns the few heads that are in the diner to look at them. the wry ghost of a smile touches his mouth for a moment, and he rubs at the stubble growing on his jaw.
“ i’ll take a hot stack and hash browns then, and a couple of eggs, over easy, ” he asks, leaning back in his chair a bit. his eyes shift to the skates on her feet again, head tipping to the side. “ i gotta ask---- do those get uncomfortable at all? gotta be a pain in the ass on a double shift. ”
We can’t even with this Mars porn. Seriously, Mars, where have you been all my life. Seriously.
saltn:
Her jaw goes slack. At first she listens to Mace with rapt attention, as if suddenly blessed with information of a prophetic tier, and then Maika looks down to picture again, and pulls it over to her side of the countertop. Predictably, she can’t tell an ass from an elbow here, but the complexity of it is awesome enough. She stares at the lines, and the space between the lines, and the lines crossing over, and lets out a second, breathless noise – laughing, this time.
“Holy shit,” Maika reiterates, as if there’s simply no other way to offer her critique on the schematic. After a few moments, her glances turn fleeting, suspicious, like this is intel she doesn’t have clearance to access. “You’re a –?” Shit, she doesn’t know what job could possibly require this. “Why do you know a circuit board by heart? That’s, like, holy shit that’s cool? And for a flight computer?! Holy shit!”
“I’m an engineer at NASA,” he answers, and there’s a small tinge of pride about it. He’d dreamt about space since he was a kid, knew that all he wanted to do was fly when he watched his parents in their flight suits heading off to pilot fighter jets. But he wanted to go further than the edge of the atmosphere. He wanted to break it. And he had, several times now.
“The flight computers do all the heavy lifting these days,” he explains, and it’s nice to talk to someone who actually seems interested. His finger taps the edge of the paper napkin covered in lines and points, squares and circles. It’s intricate, would look more delicate on the thin stretches of paper with precisely printed designs, but this will do. “I can’t understand the actual coding for them; it took dozens of other computers to write the code. Computers coding computers,” he smiles a bit to himself; there’s something positively 00s sci-fi horror about that. “I make sure the flight computer is functioning right, taking care of the housing and the circuitry boards.”
