Digging deeper, I realized that I don't hate the movie for what we got, I'm disapointed for what we didn't get.
I genuinely don't think the ending would have been much different if Jax didn't abstract, yet a good chunk of the movie was presented at the very end. To be honest, since Jax really did just end up being a traumatized person that stumbled into the circus and not anyone special, they should have given us some of his, Ribbit, and Kaufmo's background a lot earlier in the series.
Half the movie belonged to Jax, yet he didn't really get a proper resolution, and the other characters got largely sidelined again. I'd be fine if Jax's showed us something bigger. Maybe a bigger lore drop? Or at least implying that abstraction could be reversed?
Lore wise, I have a million questions and it feels like nothing makes sense.
1.) What's up with Dr. Football? Caine doesn't like letting NPCs run in the circus? Was that just an oversight?
2.) What year was the circus created? Is it only a couple of years old or something? All of the humans seemed to be approximately the same age as the cast when they entered the circus.
3.) Why is the computer that TADC is running on still working? Is everyone going to get unplugged one day or what?
4.) Why was Caine trained with circus images?
5.) Why did Jax have a bunch of working AND non-working keys? I get the manifestation element of the circus, but they put so much emphasis on Jax's keys and then didn't really elaborate on that?
6.) Why did they rebuild the circus as the circus when it literally could have been anything? Why didn't they alter their bodies how they pleased? Why did they keep their circus names?
7.) Why was Caine so cagey about the exit when he always knew that there was no way out? Part of his meltdown in episode 8 circulated around his fear that the cast members would leave him...but that was never an option.
8.) What is abstraction code-wise? Why can't it be reversed? Why does it largely affect their physical body? Why do all abstractions look the same? Why does their mind stay largely intact?
9.) Why did care about the humans being out in the void? Why did he mention that he didn't want Pomni to get "totally spoiled?" As I see it, it's just a recycle bin or something like that, so why was it so taboo to go out there?
10.) Ragatha was a realtor that got her brain scanned seemingly with a group of other agents. Why wasn't the building sold? Is the building still for sale?
11.) Is there anyone on the outside that knows about the circus at all? Can they contact anybody on the outside?
12.) What does C&A actually stand for? It seems like Caine just made up Caine and Abel.
I definitely have more questions than that but you all get the gist.
There were absolutely some beautiful, very human moments in the film and I don't want to take that away from Goose's writing, but I really wish there was more.
