whenever I see people reblog this or my other post about this with some variation of “oh i didn’t even know drag kings existed!!” it makes me so sad. I’m glad u know it now but like, the fact that people don’t even know drag kings exist? how many people do you thing would get into drag if they knew drag kings and drag masculinity was a Thing? how many more people would get to explore their masculinity via drag?

Drag kings haven’t just been around for decades, they’ve been around for over a hundred years.

As an aspiring professional queen myself, the erasure of drag masculinity is quite literally offensive to the artform as a whole. Kings have contributed so much and they deserve better.

They have been around for over a hundred years!

In the 1800s, drag kings were called “male impersonators” (and likewise, drag queens called “female impersonators”), and they would work the music halls (like, variety acts, comedy and theatre) - mostly singing silly or risqué songs like “Burlington Bertie from Bow”, “Following in Father’s Footsteps” or “Jolly Good Luck to the Girl that Loves a Soldier” - and many of them also did panto, acting as the Prince Charming, or Peter Pan (as is traditional), things like that

One of the early ones was Bessie Bonehill in the 1890s

And Hetty King, who worked until the 1930s, 30 years on the halls

Downton Abbey is wild because the stakes are always either SUPER low or crazy high. It’s like, one episode is, “Who will win the gardening contest at the fair? Is the countess cheating?” And another episode is, “The eldest daughter’s fiancé died in the Titanic, then she hooked up with a Turkish diplomat, her first ever sexual experience, and he DIED IN HER BED DURING THE CONJUGAL ACT, and now she has to move his corpse back to his bed without being of suspected of murder, BECAUSE IT COULD START A WAR, and also if people find out she’s ‘damaged goods’ and she can’t find an advantageous match, her family will LOSE THEIR ANCESTRAL HOME!” Then the show’s like, “A maid wants to become a secretary! Will she beat the odds?”

From Downton Abbey A New Era -The Official Film Companion

i feel bad for asking, but is anyone ready (rooting) to see the downton abbey show/films to stop?

i'm one of those people who loves stories and characters like they're real, but at some point the journey just has to end.

instead, i want a revival of the original fervor for the show. the fawning of the opulency and drama of the characters, and the mesmerizing appeal of the times that have long passed.

i want fellowes to publish a rewritten history from the views of minor characters. a series of short stories from their earlier and present lives.

i want it so that talented writers will be inspired too and add their name to the treasured pool of fics that remain. i want to lavish their works with comments and conjecture about the coming chapters.

i want gifs of the best and ugliest sides of my favorite characters, and i will love them all.

i just want to go back to 2012 in general, when life was simpler, though a tad less exciting. much like when characters reminisced about 1910s instead of enjoying the Jazz Age.

i want to add to the fandom in the ways that i wish others could, because these characters drop by unannounced in my head and just live there like the Raven, unflitting and rent-free

If Thomas got hitched, how many people believe that:

Thomas would get married and wear a ring?

He would be allowed to wear it? Even in the downstairs? Or would he only be able to wear it in the privacy of his room?

Or is he the type to want people to mind their business and ask who the lucky woman is? Or would he and his S/O have fun with it, especially with guest staff?
