The day had been a disaster from the moment Lin walked into the precinct. Endless meetings with city councilors who knew nothing about law enforcement, on top of several complaints about patrol coverage she had no budget to fix. Every minute of the day had felt like an hour, and by the time she climbed the stairs to her apartment, her jaw ached from grinding her teeth. It was yet another Monday that had drained her dry.
She wanted a drink. She wanted several, if she were honest. Something sharp to burn the day out of her throat. And after, maybe she could collapse into bed and pretend the world didn’t exist for twelve hours.
But when she pushed the door open, she stopped dead in the entryway.
Kya was stretched across her couch, barefoot and her hair loose around her shoulders, dressed in Lin’s oversized RCPD hoodie and a pair of sweats, her pink reading glasses perched on the bridge of her nose. A book rested in her hand, and a steaming mug of tea was delicately placed on the coffee table beside her. The only light came from the lamp next to her, the golden hues warm against the rainy grey outside. She looked soft, and utterly at ease. Like she belonged there.
Kya glanced up at the sound of the door closing, and a smile curved her mouth. Then she caught sight of Lin’s face, and her expression shifted into something quieter. She gave her a soft look, as if to say Long day, huh?
Lin felt something unravel, felt something melt. Her shoulders sagged, and her lungs deflated in a heavy sigh. All the aggravation, the exhaustion, the frustrations of the day, they slid right off her, just from that look alone. And all Lin wanted now was comfort. Rest.
Her mother would call it weakness. Kya always said it was brave. Lin now understood it was human. That she was human.
Without another word, she dropped her bag by the door and stripped her metal uniform off piece by piece, until she was down to her undershirt and pants. By the time she stepped into the living room, Kya had already closed her book and set it aside. She opened her arms, as if to say come here, I’ve got you, and Lin almost wanted to cry.
She crossed the last few feet and all but collapsed onto her. She climbed onto the couch and pressed herself down into her, tucking her head beneath her chin, the weight of her body sinking into Kya’s. The scent that greeted her hit her in a way no drink ever could. Home.
Kya’s warm arms wrapped around her, one hand sliding up to stroke slow circles along her back. Lin let out a sound somewhere between a sigh and a groan, her eyes already closing. It felt absurd, how much she needed this, how badly she craved softness after a day like this one.
“You okay, baby?” Kya murmured against her hair.
Lin’s throat tightened at the pet name. It still surprised her, sometimes, how much being called that warmed her. “Hmhm,” she managed.
Kya had only moved in about a month ago. Lin was still learning what it meant to share her space, her life. Some days she welcomed it, others not so much. But Kya was patient, and Lin was trying, and she knew they would get there, eventually.
But this? This she didn’t mind at all.
The rain tapped softly against the window. Kya’s touch slowed, her hand tracing down Lin’s spine, her lips pressing a tender kiss into Lin’s hair. Lin’s breath evened out, and sleep claimed her before she could resist it.
