Non-writers when they're bored: scroll phone, watch something, go outside.

Writers when they're bored: entire new cast of characters, three acts, working title, pinterest board, playlist, lore that goes back four generations, a map they drew by hand, a name that means something in a language they don't speak.

We do not know how to be bored. We only know how to be overwhelmed by a new idea instead of the old one.

When reading fanfic keep in mind that for professional literature: 

Short story: under 7,500

Novelette: between 7,500 and 17,500

Novella: between 17,500 and 40,000

Novel: over 40,000

Fics over 40k are literally a novel written and shared for free.  If you have written a 40k+ fic, you have literally written a novel.

not only is a short story under 7,500, if you’re writing for a lit mag or other similar publication, I’ve never known one to take more than 3,000 words for a fiction feature, which, trust me, is less than you can ever imagine. if you can write short, that’s a gift. it’s harder! make someone feel something with fewer words!! it’s masterful!!
