Hey, you, cis girl that's very (correctly) vocal about women being allowed to talk about their periods, do you include trans women in that?
I ask because every single time I've tried to talk about it to anyone that isn't a trans woman they get fucking angry. Which has caused me to have to just suffer in silence every single month. So I really relate to cis women when they talk about literally the exact same thing; being shamed by everyone around them their whole lives for talking about their periods, so they just suffer in silence every month as it negatively impacts their work and social lives. But I don't even feel like I can voice that I am literally dealing with the same exact thing because most of y'all react like you want to throw me in front of a bus for saying it, even those of you who act like your such big great transfem allies.
I guess I'll take this opportunity to talk about trans women periods. The first thing any tme person thinks when they hear this is always "how can trans women have periods? They don't have uteruses!"
The answer is: the uterus isn't what causes your period, it is effected by your period. What causes your period and what causes trans women's periods is the same thing: the endocrine system.
HRT changes the sex of your endocrine system. Feminizing HRT makes it a female endocrine system, giving us a 28-day hormone cycle just like cis women. At the end of that cycle, the hypothalamus floods the body with prostaglandins. Those are what cause all but one of the period symptoms, because they make muscles inflame and contract. They are what make the uterus shed its lining, they are what cause intestinal cramps, they are what cause body aches, they are what cause headaches and migraines. The only period symptom not causes by the release of prostaglandins throughout the body is depression, and that is caused by your endocrine system simply not processing as much estrogen and from simply feeling like shit.
So, the only symptoms trans women don't get every 28 days is menstrual cramps, because yes we do not menstruate since we don't have uteruses. But migraines, depression, body aches, intestinal cramps, and the infamous "period shits" don't exactly add up to us having any better of a time. Except we have to pretend that we're fine and nothing is different because no one believes that we get periods, not even cis women.
"But you can't call it a period then because that refers to MENSTRUATION!" is another one I hear all the time. This is incorrect. You use the word "period" instead of just "menstruation" because it doesn't just refer to menstruation. It refers to a period at the end of the hormone cycle where we experience a host of symptoms. And not all cis women experience all of the symptoms that encompass the period. Not all cis women get migraines, or body aches, or have severe depression. If a cis woman gets a hysterectomy she doesn't menstruate either! In that instance she experiences an identical period to what trans women experience. Yet, I doubt you'd insist that cis women who've had hysterectomies don't have periods.
Oh, another thing that I personally discovered after bottom surgery: vaginal odor changes for trans women during our periods too. I was not expecting that because I always thought it was just from menstruation. But nope, the ph levels of a trans woman's vagina are the same of as a cis woman's vagina, and it changes during our periods just the same.
I don't mean to distract from the very important message of this post, but I'm worried trans women may not know this because even a lot of cis women don't: if your period comes with severe depression, that's not normal or healthy, that's a medical issue. A little bit of depression and mood swings are normal, but if it's severe or debilitating? That's probably Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder. It sucks but it's treatable.
I thought it was normal for years to feel that way, and I don't want anybody else to suffer like I did. Trans women are likely even more vulnerable to having untreated PMDD due to a combination of difficulty accessing healthcare and the fact that cis women are refusing to share the period wisdom. (I'm not a cis woman btw, just an enby with a uterus and estrogen-dominant endocrine system.) (I'm also making the assumption that trans and cis women have equal probabilities of getting PMDD, but who knows really? I doubt anyone's ever studied it.)
I just want you to know this in case it helps anybody. Your period isn't supposed to make you feel like you're gonna die every month, and if it does, there are ways to mitigate that.
I always welcome people talking about this. When I made this post I was one of those women who thought the severe depression every month was normal. Another person using this post to talk about PMDD a few days later is how I learned about it and that I probably have it. Now I've seen my doctor about it and we're working on figuring out a treatment that works for me.
Did not doubt the existence of a hormonal cycle / period in transgender women, as I've seen many talk about it, but still wanted to look more into it.
While there's not much on it - something that will hopefully change! - there has been one study done that found that there is a hormonal cycle that trans women on HRT can (specifying can because tons of periods are wonky per person, who knows what folks will go through) go through that causes many symptoms "associated with the luteal phase in cisgender women".
The luteal phase is "the second half of the menstrual cycle". For people who go through menstruation, that's the part where you're sore and hungry all the time and generally annoyed (PMS symptoms).
Currently it's mostly left to anecdotal evidence - which does nothing to invalidate the experiences, everything was purely anecdotal once! - but there's likely still plenty of research being done on the topic. Hopefully we'll have some more news as time goes on!
Definitely interesting!

“so this week my town made the news for—” nope
“there’s a restaurant two miles from my house called—” nope
“today I learned [celeb] went to my high school—” nope nope nope nope nope
these are all real posts I’ve seen on the internet that allowed me to identify a user’s hometown instantly. if it’s a small town, that’s doubly dangerous, because a bad actor could trace you just by a unique first name or selfie you once posted. in an age where doxxing and stalking are some of the worst I’ve ever seen it, you HAVE to think twice about what you’re posting online.
i once saw a 13-year old post an image they noted as being “a few miles from their house.” it had a theater in the shot with a unique enough name to be local. one google maps search, now everyone knew not only what city they lived in, but the possible neighborhoods in that radius too. and they had a HUGE following…who all knew this was a 13-year-old child.
so yeah. not to sound like a 90s internet safety PSA…but I’m gonna be that PSA for a minute.
if you’re posting an image, there is NO need to say that you live there. you could just be traveling. “saw this in Montana” is better than “saw this by my house!”
before you post about a venue, especially a restaurant or small store, check and see if it’s local—CRUCIALLY if it has only one or two locations. people might travel to arenas or convention centers, but they’re far less likely to be traveling to Bartleby’s Fish and Chips. if it’s an anecdote and you still live nearby, you can honestly just leave the name out entirely.
if you’re sharing a news story, it can just be a story you found and wanted to share. you don’t have to clarify “it happened in my town,” because even if you don’t mention your town name, an easily-googled news article will.
if you’re seeing a concert or meeting a celebrity on a tour that’s stopped locally, wait until they’ve hit a few more venues before you post about it, or at the very least wait until you get home. this is honestly a smart move for any event you attend: unless you’re marketing yourself, there’s no need to advertise your location in real time.
check your selfie backgrounds for anything identifying. this includes city names on venues, school names, street signs, and house numbers.
this stuff is flexible if you no longer live in your hometown, or if your city is particularly big, but there’s STILL no reason to tie yourself to your school, your workplace, or your street. you can call it paranoid, but as someone who’s seen my friends get literal death threats over fictional characters before, the last thing I want is someone willing to act on those threats finding out where they live.
anyway. PSA over. does a kickflip or whatever

wish we could talk about feminism or especially transfeminism without feeling crazy. because its not crazy. but whenever we talk about it we feel like we're putting on our tinfoil hats and ranting on the streets.
we can't even say "i hate men" without having to explain TO OTHER WOMEN that no, we don't hate every individual man on the planet, we hate the class man and the system men made for themselves that dominates the place we live in. in the same way that we have to tell other women that misandry is not a systemic force, and hating what men as a class of people and the patriarchy they made does not a misandrist make
and then WE feel bad because we made others uncomfortable by talking about injustice!
Its absolutely insane how much backsliding the public consciousness has intentionally done over the last couple years alone in regards to feminism. Like, all of these things were basic feminist concepts that most people anywhere left of center understood and accepted as late as 2024. Y'all remember the "would you rather encounter a strange man in the woods or a bear" question? That whole thing happened just two fucking years ago!
This meme was posted in 2017 by a man!
I do some sw where my rule is “no men” and trans men get really weird about it so I’m glad you’re talking about something similar. one of the boxes on my consent form for private time is “are you a man? I do not work with men” And they check “yes”. And then it auto-rejects. And then I get a note or message from them like “is it ok I’m actually a trans man” no? What? my work stuff is all clearly labeled or advertised as “lesbian domme” or “open to work with submissive women”. It happened so much that I added “I don’t work with men, including trans men” which feels redundant as someone explicitly trans-friendly.
I’ll say, cis men are Worse about the boundary, I am inundated with cis men who want me to break my rule, but those men are typically huge shit heads from the get-go, whereas the trans men I’m saying no to are like…. Genuinely convinced they don’t count in the category of “man”. The ones I meet at parties and stuff are 90% kind and then talk down to me all of a sudden when I say I don’t work with men, as if I just don’t get queer history/culture/gender variance/whatever.
Literally this. Literally exactly this. I don't really have anything to add to this. Men's entitlement truly knows no bounds.

actually gonna reblog this because these are the uncomfortable things trans men have to face as men. manhood can mean a lot of things, but that’s irrelevant to my point. what you need to be aware of is that you are unconsciously holding a loaded gun in every interaction you have with trans women. you are a danger to every woman who shares your marginalization, unless you are actively aware of this and consciously pointing that gun in a different direction. not because of biology, not because men are inherently evil or any nonsense like that, but because of your social power over women in your community. this is very basic feminism intersectional feminism. im not saying trans men are worse than cis people, im not saying you’re evil, im not blaming you for transmisogyny and im not saying you want to hurt trans women. i’m saying you have privilege over women, because you are men, and that you will hurt trans women if you don’t recognize that. im saying your transness does not make you immune to perpetuating misogyny. if knowing that makes you uncomfortable— good! it’s fucked up that society is stratified and classed in this way. transmisogyny is fucking terrible, and it’s terrible that you can leverage and benefit from it. but instead of lashing out at people telling you an uncomfortable truth, consider that the onus may be on you to get a little more comfortable with being uncomfortable.
in my little pony universe youd go to a job interview and theyd be like so how does your cutiemark reflect your dedication to this position. And every time youd have to spew some bullshit about how your cutiemark of two tennis rackets actually means youre a team player and good at multitasking and view the market like a playing field. or whatever. and you wouldnt even get the job
Thanks to Equestria v Sugar Sprinkle, cutie mark interview questions are considered hiring discrimination, so if anypony asks you any cutiemark related questions or even alludes to any questions about your cutiemark such as "In your own words, describe your life purpose" you can and should refuse to answer. Know your rights, ponies.
my notifications are once again devolving into a spirited debate about the ethics of actions that could potentially make someone uncomfortable, and at risk of sounding like someone about to get a lot of irate anons I think we're frankly giving way too to much moral weight to hypothetical discomfort
the thing about discomfort is that it's an extremely nebulous category that can be triggered by virtually anything and that's far too broad a category to have any inherent moral quality to it. like. my mom was mad uncomfortable when I stopped shaving. that didn't mean I was doing violence against my mom it just meant she needed to get over herself. many such cases it must be said.
there's not a single example I could give that's better than this
