murderbot and arts first meeting is literally so funny. like imagine you meet a biblically accurate angel and instead of being all 'be not afraid' it says actually you SHOULD be afraid. and then when you are in fact afraid it goes oh shit oh fuck. not THAT afraid, sorry. wanna watch tv? and then you watch tv with it and it keeps telling you to pause it when its favourite characters are in danger so it can calm down. and then it asks to do surgery on your bones. Asshole Research Transport character of all time
op your tags are so important
Ok, it's finally done. Home is a place, home is a person.
This story is my first major piece after several years of art block, and I'm so glad I could finally get back to drawing.
Huge thanks to my dear friend @chancekey for the support.
it's fun in scifi to look at what doesn't need to be said, calibrated by publication date. i'm re-reading the reckoners series by brandon sanderson, published 2013, and stuff like "the earpiece connects wirelessly to the cell phone" has to be stated, because wireless headphones weren't nearly as ubiquitous in 2013. compared to the murderbot diaries by martha wells, first installment 2017 and most recent last month, which takes for granted that the reader can pick up the difference between direct-broadcast communication tech and devices that use established digital infrastructure, like the difference between radios and internet chat messages.
another aspect is that this "common knowledge" base for scifi tech is built on not only current real-world tech, but also on previous works in the genre. star trek established things like scanners/tricorders and long-range wireless comm devices, stargate gave genre enthusiasts a solid working knowledge of portals, babylon 5 set conventions for wormholes and subspace travel. (no idea if any of those were the first to do those techs but you know what i mean.) any future scifi works could use those story mechanics and trust that readers/viewers would get what was happening. it's an evolving ecosystem, building on itself to be able to tell ever-changing stories. just think it's neat
