Tim Walker: Killed: Sometimes - and in my experience, thankfully, rarely - one's pictures are "killed" by the editor of the magazine that commissions you. This is heartbreaking. All the effort you've given to a series is dropped. Left on the cutting room floor. There's a myriad of reasons as to why this happens. Here are some memorable killed photographs that none of you will ever have seen.

In these portraits, TIME magazine asked me to photograph their people of the year. It was an extraordinary opportunity to make portraits from a list of people I felt entirely deserved celebration. Then at the very last minute TIME added a name onto the list that I wasn't sure about. I was tempted... but wasn't sure I was comfortable photographing this person, nor whether they deserved celebrating.

It really made me think about why I make pictures of people and what I'm doing. I realise now, that for me to take a good portrait, I really need to admire the person in front of me. While some great photographers are more indifferent to their subjects, merely documenting the faces of the time, for better or for worse, this isn't something I'm good at nor want to do. Because I declined to photograph that person, the magazine dropped me as the commissioned photographer altogether along with these portraits of a young Riz Ahmed and later Stormzy, both of whom I adore.
