Separate Fenton and Phantom can be so fun and interesting, especially in amore traditional ghost au....I'm rereading Learning to Live, Learning to Die on AO3!

Maddie sat down on the couch, cup of tea in one hand and the old family photo album in the other. She slowly turned the pages, admiring each photo of days past. There were older pictures of Jazz as a baby and more of her slowly growing up over the years. The pictures slowly phase into baby pictures of Danny, making Maddie coo and awe reminiscing about when she and her precious baby boy were close. As she turned the pages, the pictures of Danny grew less and less. She pursed her lips as she realized she didn’t have many pictures of Danny as he reached his teen years. They had grown apart over the years, and she regretted the growing distance between them. But it wasn’t too late to change that now, wasn’t it? She got up, closing the album and putting it down on the table.
“Jack? Honey?! Kids? Can you come here for a bit, I want to get a picture of us for the album.” She says as she looks in the closet and pulled out the old digital camera and its stand. She set it up in the middle of the living room, adjusting it slightly to have a good view of her general direction. The others soon arrived, curious and a bit confused at the sudden want of a picture.
“What’s all this about?” Jack said smiling as he walked over to inspect the camera.
“Haven’t seen this little thing in a long time. Do you think it still works?”
Maddie smiled, “Oh, it’s just been so long that we’ve taken any family pictures. We used to take so many! But the album is looking quite bare now a days, I just decided to fix that.” She says, turning the camera on. “Alright everyone! Get into position! Jack, do you remember how to put the timer on this thing?” she asked. Jack walked over to help as both kids tried to straighten themselves out for this picture.
“This is just so outta the blue mom, what made you want to take more pictures all of a sudden?” Jazz asked as she fixed her hair
Danny just watched them set up as he dusted off some crumbs from his shirt.
“I’m not sure I’m in my best attire for photos, maybe I should sit this one out” he says as his dad finished setting up the timer and came over to them.
“Nonsense kiddo! Ya look great! You too Jazzy pants! Now let’s get into position.” He says as he grips their shoulders and pushes them into frame.
Maddie joined them smiling and carefully tucked in a few strands of Dannys hair behind his ear
“You’ll always look handsome to me sweetie” she says before licking her thumb and rubbing it over Jazz’s cheek, much to her displeasure. “And you are always looking so beautiful.” She smiles as she places the kids together in front of her while she positions herself next to Jack behind them.
The camera timer counted down from 5, there was a sudden flash and shutter sound as the camera took the picture. Maddie went over excitedly to see the newest addition to the family album but then paused. She raised her eyebrow curiously as she observed the picture carefully.
“Something wrong my dear?” Jack asked as he too went over to see what was going on.
Both Fenton parents observed the picture with confusion and worry. They were incredulous at the appearance of Danny in the picture. He seemed unfocused, his surroundings getting a bit dark despite the flash, but what caught their attention the most was Dannys eyes. The were a bright ectoplasmic green, casting an eerie glow around him. It made him appear...ghostly.
Jazz gently took the picture so her and Danny could take a look. Danny felt his breath hitch as he and Jazz quickly shared a knowing look between themselves.
Jack spoke first
"I dont know why this could be happening Danno, have you been feeling ok?! Did one of those creepy specters mess with ya? That could maybe explain the glow!" He says as he looked around, pointing the Fenton Finder around to detect any spooks.
Maddie went over to quickly look Danny over worriedly.
"Are you feeling ok?" She said shining a flash light into his eyes
"Any nausea? Headaches, tummy aches, any desire to do something evil?" She asks as she looks him over, checking ears and mouth for any signs of possession.
Danny squirmed out of her grasp and gave a sheepish chuckle.
"Im fine mom, really no need to worry. I think it was just something related to the flash." He says trying to defuse the situation.
"But it only happened to you, everyone else looks ok" Maddie says looking at the picture again
"It might have just been where he was standing." Jazz butted in. "That spot just looks odd anyways." She says nonchalantly waving her hand in dismissal
Jack thinks
"You may be right about that Jazzy pants, hmm, so why dont we just take another one!" He says going over to set the timer again. "
Danny quickly hurried towards the door.
"Oh I um, I forgot i had to meet Sam and Tucker for an umm project we gotta do. Ya, sorry ill see u later!" He says as he bolts out the door.
Jazz gives a sheepish grin as she too backs up.
"And im um...late for a therapy session with Spike, cant ruin his progress you know" she says as she hastily goes to the door and leaves.
Jack blinks
"Well, maybe later then" he says as he looks over at Maddie, who put the photo down seeming lost in thought
"Jack," she said softly "You dont think this is our fault isn't it?" She says as she looks up at him
"I mean, we do just have all this ghost stuff laying around. Maybe its more contaminated in here than we thought."
Jack paused for a moment and hummed
"And we do make him clean up around here. Chores are good for a growing boy...but I do understand where you're coming from." He says
"Im sure its fine but tell you what? Let's keep an eye on him just in case?" He says
Maddie nods, seeming to calm at this
"I think that is the best course of action. See if anything else is strange." She said as she headed down to the lab to check for ectoplasmic leaks.
Over the course of a couple days, the Fenton parents kept a close eye on their boy when he was home.
Danny would notice them every now and they'd act nonchalantly and wave at him.
Danny just thought they were being their normal kooky selves.
They did notice a couple of strange things, sometimes Dannys hand seemed to phase through things he was grabbing, or he seemed to vanish into thin air sometimes only to appear somewhere else suddenly.
His reflection would seem different too at times, hair looking almost white sometimes, or his eyes once again having that errie green glow to them.
Maddie took note of the times Danny was near or directly exposed to ectoplasma. She whinced as she noticed they carelessly left test rules around the lab or had Danny change the ecto filter too frequently. She felt disappointed in herself for not caring enough for her boys safety.
She sighs as Jack pulls her close, rubbing her back soothingly
"There there Madds, its not your fault. Its mostly mine, I make him do that stuff not really thinking about the consequences." He says softly
Maddie looks up at him with concern and fear in her eyes
"Oh Jack! Its my fault too, as a mother I should have been paying more attention to my children's wellbeing. We're lucky Jazz doesnt show any symptoms. What if it gets worse? What if he gets more ghostly features?! Or...or somehow ends up becoming a ghost?!" She says with a gasp
Jack blinks a bit incredulously before answering.
"Im, uh, not sure thats possible Madds, but even if our son were a specter, we will love him anyways."
Maddie took a moment to compose herself, taking a deep breath.
"Yes, you're right! Hes our boy no matter what!" She said taking his hand and leading him upstairs to Dannys room.
They had to talk to their son
Danny was finishing up some school work when his parents knocked on his door. He got up and opened it, only to immediately get tackled into a bear hug by them both.
He wheezed
"Ack! Mom....dad...what's wrong?" He asked through gasps.
Maddie pulled away and looked at him lovingly and apologetic
"We just wanted to apologize to you, for everything" she says softly
Danny felt confused
"Im..uh...not sure im understanding?"
Jack rubs the back of his head
"Well kiddo, we've just been noticing that we've, not really been, too great at the whole parenting stuff." He explained
"Especially with having you deal with all of the ghostly aftermath of our research work."
"It was very irresponsible of us to have you cleaning up such hazardous materials and thinking you'd be fine. I mean theres a reason your father and I are always in protective gear. We should have been more attentive with you, especially since stuff can happen if your exposed to ectoplasma for too long" she says as she takes his hands into hers
"We just wanted to let you know that if anything were to happen, you let us know ok? We will help you no matter what" she says giving them a little squeeze
Danny was stunned at this. He didnt know what to say.
"I um...I appreciate this greatly...its just so outta the blue!" He says
Jack pulls them back into a hug
"We love ya kiddo, no matter what. Even if we are a bit reckless at times...well work on it promise" he says
Danny felt a wave of relief and safety wash over him, he embraced his parents a well and for a while, they all stood there, enjoying each other's closeness.
Perhaps Danny could trust them enough with his secret now. He just had to wait and see.

happy phandom truce to @pennerjones ! one of the prompts was for danny to be adopted by clockwork, so i went with that one. i figured it could happen after a disastrous identity reveal where danny has to flee to the ghost zone because the human world isn't safe anymore. this would move pretty nicely into a clockwork's apprentice au. in this scene, i was thinking that since time and space are kind of two sides of the same coin, maybe that could contribute to clockwork being a comforting presence for danny in a time where he desperately needs some sort of familiarity. hope you like!

One year ago, Danny Fenton went missing off of one of his eccentric marine biologist parents' expeditions at sea. They say he dove too deep and never came back up.
He was presumed drowned.
But a year later, a grieving Tucker and Sam discover a mysterious creature injured in the shallows under the boardwalk. As they try to help it, they uncover a mystery that could change everything for the sleepy seaside town of Amity Cove... and, just maybe, that their missing friend isn't as dead as they thought.
