Wei Wuxian returns from a four day night hunt with the juniors - and Lan Wangji couldn't have been happier to see his husband again. Had Lan Xichen not asked for his help with the discussion conference last minute preparations, Lan Wangji would have joined in the night hunt as well, loving any and all occasions for some family time with his beloved and their unofficially adopted children.

Wei Wuxian loves to travel - and he loves bringing little trinkets from wherever he goes, which is why the jingshi has been furnished with extra shelves for all his quirky finds... but not this time.

He hands Lan Wangji a beautifully decorated wooden box, the seemingly only thing that he's brought from the seaside village he's just been with the kids.

Lan Wangji opens it, and softens upon laying eyes on a beautifully crafted jade hairpin, glistening jewels catching onto the golden candlelight bathing the jingshi. He leaves a brief kiss onto his husband's lips, and places the gift on the table, gentle so as not to break it.

"Have you bought anything for yourself?" Lan Wangji asks, carefully surveying Wei Wuxian's reactions.

"No." comes the reply, though the smile on Wei Wuxian's face doesn't falter, and he's just as easy-going. "I didn't have any more money left."

"Wei Ying, I've already told you that you can take however much you want from the-"

Wei Wuxian disguises his reaction behind the cup of wine he downs. "I've taken enough, I just spent it on stupid things and-"

Lan Wangji takes his husband's hands in his, caressing his knuckles with his thumbs. "Wei Ying."

He sighs, and smiles to himself as he looks away. "I should've known there was no point trying to hide anything from you... You know me too well."

"What happened? You can tell me, Wei Ying."

"Last time I went to withdraw money, I was... told," Lan Wangji knows that's codeword for scolded, "...that I was... overstepping your budget and it would cause you trouble with the elders."

Shadows of disbelieving anger cross Lan Wangji's eyes. "There is no such thing as a budget for me, Wei Ying. I can spend whatever I want."

"I'm not you..." But Wei Wuxian shakes his head and smiles, "It's fine, though, I don't care about money, so-"

"What else did they say?"

Wei Wuxian sighs, again, and decides he's not going to tolerate the distance between himself and Lan Wangji anymore, sliding into Lan Wangji's lap with practiced ease.

"They told me I should spend less of your money because it's becoming obvious I'm only with you because you're rich."

Lan Wangji takes in a deep breath, his arms tightly wrapped around Wei Wuxian's body. "I will talk to them. This is not acceptable."

"Please don't kill anyone. Killing is forbidden-"

Lan Wangji leans down enough so he can lock eyes with Wei Wuxian. "There are no rules when it comes to you."

Early in the morning, Lan Wangji regretfully leaves his bed, and becomes only slightly jealous of the pillow Wei Wuxian hugs in his absence, to go have a discussion with the treasurers.

He's in a much more amicable mood than he was last night, but that isn't much improvement - and though he is not up for physical violence anymore (he wouldn't want to be locked up and away from Wei Ying, after all), that doesn't mean he's going to be in any way merciful.

After all, though he cannot convince anybody to overstep their ridiculous prejudices against Wei Ying and get to know him beyond the stereotype of the cruel Yiling Laozu, he does expect them to be at least respectful. And if they will not, Lan Wangji has no business making them.

"Hanguang-Jun." the treasurers bow, "What can we do for you?"

"I would like to know what my spending limit is."

The treasurers look to each other, confused.

"I have been made aware there is one, so I wish to know what it is." And his eyes narrow towards the chief treasurer, an old man Lan Wangji has never liked, "Unless the limit is for my husband only?"

"Hanguang-Jun," the chief treasurer begins, "there are budgets-"

"Are there? Then should the monthly deposits you send to your estranged daughter in Lanling be counted in those budgets?"

The man's eyes widen.

"Or are my husband's expenditures more outrageous than the missing financial reports from so-called diplomatic envoys you send your relatives on near hot springs retreats every winter?"

The man looks away, hiding his shaking hands in his sleeves.

"I do not care to flaunt my status and I do not believe power lays in titles. However," And Lan Wangji makes it a point to rest his hand over Bichen's hilt, "Be sure to remember I am the second heir of this sect, and Wei Ying is my husband. I am expecting the same level of respect be awarded to us both. It is neither your duty, nor your place to impose any limits on either of us."

"Even so, you yourself cannot impose on us to like him-"

Lan Wangji cuts in, his tone even but much colder. "I can impose on you to do your job. Nowhere in your tasks is it required of you to comment on the nature of my marriage."

"It is quite obvious-"

Lan Wangji turns to the other disciples in the treasury. "Henceforth, I will be taking over the treasury and will be handling all financial matters personally. Should you have any gripes with that," his eyes return to the chief treasurer, "do inform my brother of the reason why you have been demoted. I am quite sure he would be thrilled to know."

"Lan Zhan, what happened to the old treasurer? I haven't seen him around much..."

Lan Wangji kisses his husband's forehead in place of a response.

"Lan Zhan, what did you do?"

But the man moves on to softly kissing Wei Ying's lips, and entirely innocently continuing a path of pecks down his neck.

"Lan Zhan."

He sighs, as if annoyed for having been interrupted. "He is not dead."

Wei Wuxian laughs, "That's a very low bar, Hanguang-Jun."

"Yet I have not crossed it." He bites at the junction between Wei Ying's neck and shoulder.

"Good boy."

"I would have liked to, though."

"Lan Zhan!"

In the story, Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji are engaged since childhood, but LWJ is not thrilled with the idea to the point that he goes to war to escape the wedding. However, WWX goes with him to protect him. In the end, in an attempt to kill Wen Ruohan, LWJ makes a strike that would kill both Wen Ruohan and himself, but WWX jumps in front of the sword and gets seriously injured. I don’t remember anything else, except that the last words WWX says are that he wants LWJ to marry for love, to which LWJ replies, “Then you must live."

2. Hello! I’m looking for a fic that was on ao3 where WWX and LWJ were both wolf shifters. I think there was a mating run in the beginning and LWJ ended up rejecting WWX and he fell very ill as a result. They eventually moved past it but they didn’t get together until one day JGS I think it was drugged WWX and he was sent into heat. 20. It’s MDZS/The Untamed. It’s alternate universe. During the part of Canon where jiang Cheng strangles Wei Wuxian he’s found by someone else. It’s the one where he ends up with the Wen and they decide to leave the war. They find an abandoned village and take Wei Wuxian with them. I believe he loses his memory of the event and it has some permanent or semi-permanent side-effects to his health? 

One of the Wen elders pretends to be a lost Wei relative when they take him back to the Nie compound with A-Yuan due to concerns about the weather/winter and whether they can survive it in their small village? They also deliver a letter or explain what happened to cause his state and that he doesn’t remember?

I’ve found these ones and it’s not the one where he ends up at the riverside village or with the Lan early or with the Wen and then declared a traitor by Jiang Cheng.  He does end up with the Wen in this one, but no one learns that they’re the Dafan Wen if I remember correctly and he’s not declared a traitor. Any help would be appreciated. @saharrashadow​

It’s sobering - when Wei Wuxian feels it, the haze of wrath, resentful energy and pain clears away, like fog lifted off the surface of a warming lake. 

A-Yuan’s little hand, grasping tightly at Wei Wuxian’s tattered lapels, lets go. 

The tension in the fiber disappears, all at once, and the little hand falls limply at the side of the boy’s little body.

The world goes quiet. 

Resentment stops howling as it floats around Wei Wuxian’s kneeling form, unmoving, a sheer curtain of smoke. Corpses no longer moan, their hunger for flesh paused as they stare, empty-eyed, motionless, at the scene of a man holding the small, emaciated body of a child whose life is bleeding out of him in winding, red rivulets. The gaping wound in his stomach weeps still, no matter how hard Wei Wuxian tries - has tried - to stop it, the boy’s robes and his own, stained, his long, deft fingertips bloody, lukewarm. 

The horde of cultivators has quieted down too. They stand, like statues, swords drawn, eyes wide with fury and bloodlust, spectators to a tragedy that they’ve created. It feels almost as if they’re both basking in it and disbelieving of it, a whirlwind of contradictions. 

Tears slide over Wei Wuxian’s cheeks, clear, glistening, cutting a straight, clean path through the blood stains and dirt on his face. The droplets fall over the little boy’s face, his complexion pale, eyes halfway open. If sunlight were to hit just right - if sunlight existed in the Burial Mounds like it does on the outside - it would make his irises shine as if he were still…

Wei Wuxian brings a gentle hand over the boy’s face, ignores the way his fingertips leave bloody marks their way, and leans down to leave a trembling, tearful kiss over A-Yuan’s forehead.

He whispers something into it, something that only he knows, and then, with features contorted in pain, slides a hand over his eyes, eyelids covering the lifelessness behind them. 

Carefully, he lifts the boy to his chest, cradles him as much as he is able, his own injuries limiting, and begins humming a song. 

There is a gasp in the crowd, a gasp that ends in a wounded sound - but it goes unheard. 

Wei Wuxian closes his eyes. He feels the body in his arms slowly losing more and more heat, muscles and joints soon to become rigid. He misses the warmth of the little breath against his chest, the hold of little fingers on the ends of his hair, the seams of his clothes…

“Xian-gege, I wanna be just like you when I grow up!” He declares, a steely expression on his face as he lifts a discarded Chenqing over his head with determination - and both of his tiny arms. 

They’re both hanging out in Wei Wuxian’s cave, one working on inventions, the other drawing on paper as if to imitate him. A-Yuan usually sleeps in his granny’s shack, but his nightmares have become worse, resentful energy having taken a twisted liking to him - and Wei Wuxian is the only one that can help him through it. 

Wei Wuxian can’t help a laugh, taking the flute from the boy’s hand before he drops it.

“You shouldn’t be like me, A-Yuan.”

“But I want to!”

Wei Wuxian tries to suppress the flurry of emotions ready to spill from his eyes. He puts his brush and talisman paper away, and opens his arms for the little boy to crawl there.

His eyes light up, and he jumps into his favorite spot, nuzzling into Wei Wuxian’s robes like a kitten. 

Wei Wuxian ignores the way his badly healed fractures ache with protest at the sudden impact, and instead holds A-Yuan close, carding a hand through his hair. 

“A-Yuan, you shouldn’t be like me. You should just be like you.”

“What does that mean?”

“I don’t know.” And he kisses the top of the boy’s head. “But you have a whole lifetime to figure it out.”

“Will you help me too?”

“As long as I’m able, little radish…” 

He had imagined he would die before A-Yuan did - just like all parents do. They all imagine their children will outlive them, as it is natural for them to. They’ll grow up while their parents grow old… 

But Wei Wuxian isn’t like everybody else. A-Yuan isn’t either.

That’s what the rest of the world has decided, that’s why the order of things has been reversed. That’s why Wei Wuxian is holding the dead body of a child, that’s why he’s had to helplessly watch life drain out of his innocent eyes. 

What good is he, if he couldn’t even protect a child? 

The Yiling Patriarch? Who’s that? Who could be so afraid of somebody so useless? What’s the point - the point of everything - if none of it could save the one untainted thing living in these cursed, wretched lands?

“Such is the fate the wretched Wens deserve!” a voice in the crowd declares, disgust and satisfaction dripping into every syllable,  “Their young must be slaughtered like cattle-”

The voice dies into a gargle, a spike of resentful energy having torn through its inhabiting body, materialized from deep within the ground. The body flails, in the air, before resentful energy rushes to rip at it until nothing is left - everybody watching in fascinated terror as it happens.

Silence befalls the cultivators again. The static smoke of resentful energy has begun moving again, slowly, circling the crowd, then increasingly faster, tearing through the groups with unbridled rage. 

But it is silent. 

Only the screams of its victims echo through the Burial Mounds now. 

Wei Wuxian doesn’t hear them. 

He’s rocking the body of his child, singing to it, apologizing to it as if it would ever respond, as if it would ever matter. 

“Wei Ying…” 

A step, unstable, unsure. 

“Wei Ying…!”

Another step, even heavier than the last.

When he’s about to take the third step, red, tearful eyes fixate him from under long, dark strands of hair. He doubts they’re seeing him. 

“Wei Ying, I…”

Resentful energy howls, deafeningly, in his ears, as it circles him. 

Go away! Go die! What have you done?! Look what you’ve done! Monsters! Monsters! You will die! You deserve to die! 

“Wei Ying!”

He doesn’t know whether he’s screaming in pain, resentful energy tearing at his already marred skin, or to snap Wei Wuxian out of his trance, but it escapes him before he thinks about it, loud and desperate - and resentment leaves him, whispering threats and protests. 

Wei Wuxian stares, afraid, confused, shocked, at the man in front of him. 

“Lan… Zhan…”

Lan Wangji feels relief hearing his name out of the others’ mouth, but it’s short lived. His eyes fall onto the little body in Wei Wuxian’s arms, and anguish crosses his features as his vision blurs with tears. 

“Wei Ying…”

It’s only a short distance away, but Lan Wangji can’t stand up anymore, his body weak and hurting, so he crawls towards the two, ignoring the protests of his back against the effort. 

He sees, from up close, how hard Wei Wuxian is shaking, his veins swollen dark with resentful energy, crying soundlessly as he holds A-Yuan. 

Lan Wangji looks at the boy, a peaceful expression on his face, as if he was sleeping. The boy he gifted toys to, the boy that, lost in the markets, called him father. The boy that bore sins that were not his own and that paid dues he had not even be alive for. 

“They killed him, Lan Zhan…” Wei Wuxian whispers, tightening his hold on the cold body. “He was on his own...crying… I didn’t know…” 

“It’s not your fault, Wei Ying…” and he reaches to touch A-Yuan’s cold cheek, wet with Wei Wuxian’s tears. “It’s not your fault…” 

“I watched him die, Lan Zhan… That’s all I could do…”

Lan Wangji tentatively reaches to wrap an arm around Wei Wuxian’s shoulders, worries it might scare him away - but Wei Wuxian leans into the touch, into him, his eyes never leaving A-Yuan. He's shaking even more now, resentment crawling up his body, but never touching A-Yuan's corpse.

“I want to kill them all, Lan Zhan…”

Lan Wangji holds him, tightly, lips against his temple, “Kill them, Wei Ying." The weight of Bichen on his hip feels unbearable, and he discards of it, resentful energy wrapping around it curiously, as if taken aback by the lack of resistance. "All of them.”

Wei Wuxian wishes he still had it in him to question this - Lan Wangji, of all people… he would never agree to this, he would never encourage it…

Has he rescinded Bichen? Or is the sword spirit... does it accept this? Does it want to be used for such a purpose...?

But none of this matters anymore. Neither Wei Wuxian, nor Lan Wangji are the same people now. No parents are the same after their child dies. Empty, meaningless.

Resentful energy dances into the air as if rejoicing. 

Wei Wuxian’s eyes glow red, and he lifts one of his hands in the air, holding the stygian tiger amulet like bait. 

Wisps of resentment gather to it quickly, knocking into each other, weaving around it, around themselves. Expectant.

“Feast.”

The Burial Mounds rattle, a formidable earthquake splitting the earth open, ancient corpses rising to the order. 

In the cacophony of anguished screams and moaning corpses, storming resentment and blood rivers, a family stays, united, broken, untouched by it all as they hold one another. 

Hold one another and sing.

Nobody comes out alive out of the Burial Mounds. 

The siege is never spoken of again.

The boundary has never been crossed since.

Wei Wuxian emerges from the bathroom very shortly after Lan Wangji, only a little bit wobbly on his feet. Lan Wangji watches him from his spot on the bed, and doesn't bother hiding how smug the sight of his husband makes him. There is still a flush to Wei Wuxian's cheeks, water dripping off the long, dark tresses of his hair, the thin robe he wears sticking ever so slightly to the patches of his skin he hasn't properly dried yet. Even in the long, silky robe, Lan Wangji can make out the shape of Wei Wuxian's body, the dip of his waist and the round plush of his ass.

He hasn't fully tied the robe around himself, a very generous amount of cleavage on display as the cloth hangs loosely off his body, love bites blooming on his milky skin, and when he sits at the vanity, crossing his legs, Lan Wangji's eyes catch onto the marks on his thighs.

What a sight.

Wei Wuxian winks at him as he begins disentangling his hair. "It's impolite to stare, Hanguang-Jun."

"Can you blame me?"

Wei Wuxian laughs, and moves his eyes towards the mirror, admiring as much of himself as he can see. "I suppose I can't. I do look really good."

Lan Wangji makes it a point to look his husband over, "Mn. Ravishing."

Wei Wuxian turns towards him, leaning his elbow against the vanity table, body curved enticingly, "Especially after you've fucked me."

"Wei Ying."

"What, isn't it true?" And Wei Ying slowly uncrosses his legs, slyly covering himself with the robe that Lan Wangji suddenly wishes was more see-through, "Eyes up here, Hanguang-Jun. Where are your manners?"

"Where you left your shame."

Wei Ying crosses his legs again. "Cheeky." He returns his attention to the mirror, and runs his fingers through his hair. "Are you going to stare at me while I do this now?"

"Yes."

Wei Wuxian clicks his tongue, faking displeasure. "I meant, are you going to only be staring?"

Lan Wangji's eyes go dark, "How much do you like that vanity table?"

Wei Wuxian stands up, and lets the robe fall off his shoulders. "Not at all."

People keep gossiping about LWJ marrying WWX and he's growing so tired of the old "The Yiling Laozu corrupted Hanguang-Jun" discourse that, one day, he decides to say something about it.

So, in a very public place...

"You lot should be glad Hanguang-Jun married me. Cause if I didn't have him to reel me in, I'd be fucking all of your wives and they'd all fall in love with me."

And Lan Wangji, in his undisturbed Lan-ness, nods solemnly as if he's declaring an absolute truth of the universe and says, "They would. I sure did."

I’m so curious if during Wei Wuxian’s Yiling Patriarch era the people of Yiling could recognize him.

We know he went into town and was treated pretty normally. It could be that people didn’t know who he was, or they knew did and didn’t care, either of which would be incredibly funny:

Yiling citizen: Oh look there’s the radish guy! He’s quite nice, always sweet to the kids and his radishes are surprisingly good!
