I was thinking today about fantasy and combat roles in games, and about tropes like drift compatibility and things like WoT’s aes sedai and warder relationship. And all of these brought me back to a DA2 headcanon of mine:

In spite of their squabbles, Hawke and Carver have this sort of synergistic fighting style. Carver fights reckless because it’s his job. He’s up front, making sure nobody gets past him, while Hawke is at his back reinforcing the line with magic. They leave themselves open and let the other take up the slack.

Then Carver is gone, and there’s Fenris; a bodyguard who throws his life into the fight in order to protect his master, his fighting style is like a corrupted version of what Hawke and Carver had. But when he joins Hawke he feels what it’s like to have someone have his back as much as he has theirs and they just… fit together.
