Hello, call me Gallium, or Spoon, or Gallium Spoon! I am 29, and I'm an occupational therapist. I post about whatever random stuff I feel like but mostly cats, art I like, and whatever I'm currently reading. You'll see my two cats here a lot, their names are Rocky Road and Creme Brulee. I think the thing I loved most about Hadestown was the throughline about solidarity

You can tell when Orpheus is getting the song right when other people start singing along

He almost gives up and leaves the underworld but stays because other people are inspired to stand up to Hades after hearing him

"if they can do it so can we"

Hades gets to set the terms of Orpheus and Eurydice leaving the underworld and the One thing he does is separate them, destroy their ability to depend on each other during the journey

Hades even targets Eurydice to lure her to the underworld when Orpheus is distracted and she's alone

Me *describing Hadestown*: So yeah it was really good, I cried multiple times

Friend: Wow, it's so impressive when something that's completely fictional is good enough to get a real emotional reaction

Me *once cried at a cat food commercial because the kitten was just too small*: yup, yeah, really moving stuff

I'm late to this party so I didn't realize that Hadestown went all in on the climate change metaphor

Like you mean to tell me that the guy in charge of extracting resources from underground has the power to manipulate the seasons and make the weather more extreme on a whim? Ever since he started doing this it feels like there's no spring or fall? Just heat wave summer and freezing winter??

And he can make his own home as bright and warm as he wants so he's completely insulated from the consequences of a problem that he caused?!?

The Locked Tomb Daemon AU: The Seventh House

This one is even more spoilery than usual! Major spoilers for both Gideon the Ninth and Harrow the Ninth

Dulcinea Septimus (the real one): Timber rattlesnake

While the real Dulcinea was not present at Canaan House, she very much wanted to be. Out going, vivacious, desperate to make friends and see new places, Dulcie and her daemon were ready to risk their fragile health for this once in a myriad opportunity

Too bad the hands and fingers of God had other plans. Dulcie tried her best to feed Cytherea lies so the other houses will catch on. Somewhere on her list regrets in this life is the fact that, in her letters to them, she only told Cam and Pal that she settled as a snake. If only she'd been more specific...

Protesilaus Ebdoma (the real one): Little Brown Bat

When he was young and in the cohort, Protesilaus was embarrassed that his daemon settled as something so small. But, fundamentally a family man with a love of plants, he grew to love his little bat

Cytherea Loveday: ???/Scarlet King Snake

Nearly ten thousand years ago, Loveday Heptane killed herself so that Cytherea could live. Ten thousand years ago Cytherea's daemon was permanently transformed into the brightly colored snake that had once been Loveday's. Does she even remember her daemon's original form? After ten thousand years as the fingers of God, how much of her original personality is even left?

Edit: I forgot to explain that when Cytherea is puppeting Protesilaus's corpse she claims that since his daemon is so small she prefers to stay out of the way and hides in a pocket in Protesilaus's clothes and that's why she's never visible. Totally reasonable. Don't even worry about it.

Spoilers for Gideon the Ninth

Palamedes: New Caledonian Crow

Fun fact: the new Caledonian crow is the only known non primate to demonstrate passing on knowledge of tool making to others

Palamedes settled some time in between the event of The Mysterious Study of Doctor Sex and becoming the youngest Master Warden in Sixth House history

His daemon is often perched on his shoulders and rarely flies

Camellia: Chimpanzee

Camilla settled shortly before Pal did, but was still unsettled during the events of Doctor Sex

Anyone familiar with chimpanzees would have been less surprised by Camilla' vicious fighting style against Marta, unfortunately for the Second House there probably aren't many chimps around post resurrection

The Locked Tomb Daemon AU: The Fifth House

Daemons for Abigail Pent and Magnus Quinn! Not really any spoilers in this one

Abigail: King cobra

With matching intense stares Abigail Pent and her daemon make an intimidating duo at Canaan House. Abigail's daemon is usually wrapped around her as she studies the artifacts and history of the First House

Magnus Quinn: Trumpeter Swan

A swan might not be the most intimidating daemon for the cavalier primary of the Fifth House, but Magnus is not self conscious about his form (besides, looks can be deceiving)

Magnus's dae is just as sociable as he is and just as likely to make a bad pun. While at Canaan House she is usually keeping an eye on the Forth House kids and their daemons

The Locked Tomb Daemon AU: The Fourth House

Daemons for Issac and Jeannemary! Major spoilers for Gideon the Ninth!

Issac: Wolf spider

Issac settled only recently before the invite to Canaan House arrived. He and his daemon are feeling all grown up and proud to have the form of a tenacious, active hunter. They're certain that they are prepared to take on anything the lyctor trials can throw at them!

Jeannemary: marbled polecat?

Jeannemary was still unsettled when she arrived with Issac at Canaan House. Slightly jealous of Issac, she repeatedly claims that she'll be settling any day now. She can just feel it

But it's not to be. Bluntly, Jeannemary dies unsettled. No one, not her surrogate parents, not Issac, not Gideon, not even Jeannemary herself and her own daemon will ever know that they really were very close to settling as an athletic, hard working, outstanding form

Jeannemary's daemon did take polecat form at least twice, first when she attempted to jump into the duel between Marta and Camilla, then again when Gideon had to drag her kicking and screaming away from Isaac's body. Maybe she settled then, in room X-203, before falling asleep. Maybe she and Gideon were too exhausted to notice

Book!Rocky, after explaining all the most important parts of the 'Save Stars' mission, starts gossiping to Adrian about his alien buddy

Rocky: Did I tell you about the time he asked to watch me eat?

Adrian: He did??

Rocky: yeah, apparently humans don't have a taboo around eating, they eat in front of each other all the time

Adrian (who has been desperate to study Grace like the Eridian equivalent of a bug but holding back to be polite) You mean to tell me I can ask him about the oral cavity minerals he uses to masticate his food and he won't be uncomfortable?!

Rocky: oh no, I almost forgot I surrounded myself with biologists

The Locked Tomb Daemon AU: The Third House

I've talked before about what daemons I think the twins would have, so I'll be repeating myself a bit here sorry (major spoilers for Gideon the Ninth)

Coronabeth: Domestic cat

(So the other pics I use are just taken from Wikipedia, but this is specifically a picture of Smoothie "the world's most photogenic cat" that I got from a US Weekly article)

Coronabeth was a late settler. When your whole life is a lie, it's hard to figure out who you are. However, once settled, everyone was quick to marvel at her daemons beauty. Far fewer appreciated the daemon's strength and agility

Daemons are a source of thalergy and participate in necromancy, requiring even more effort to hide the fact that Coronabeth is not a necromancer

Ianthe: Snow leopard

Ianthe settled before her sister. Her daemon is beautiful, graceful, and mostly silent except for the occasional sarcastic comment or to laugh at someone

Ianthe and Coronabeth's daemons often cuddle. Normally siblings daemons being physically affectionate would be unremarkable, but this is the tridentarius's. They make it weird and everyone would like them to stop

Naberius: Goshawk

Falconry probably doesn't exist anymore so it's unlikely that Babs is aware of the goshawk's reputation as a particularly difficult bird to work with, not because they aren't talented hunters (they are that in spades), but because they are highly aggressive and stubborn

Babs's daemon spends just as much time preening herself as he does putting product in his hair

She also takes her cavalier training just as seriously. While daemons don't typically participate directly in duels, she still serves as his lookout

When Ianthe eats his soul and ascends to lyctorhood her daemon begins changing shape from snow leopard to goshawk (I've decided this is how lyctors work in addition to the eye color swap) but since Babs is resisting, the daemon is turning back and forth and shifting into a horrible mashup creature that looks more like an Animorphs book cover than how an unsettled daemon looks changing forms
