The name of the flower at the end of Yuki no Shita no Qualia was revealed. Its calledニリンソウor nirinsou. It has multiple meanings. One is friendship, the other is cooperation but I’m sure those are not the words Akio used when he told Umi. The flower also means I’ll never let go.

Interview Summary: Series Composition Writer Toshiya Ohno
As with previous interviews, I scanned this from the Official Logbook and read it with the assistance of machine translation. The points I summarize here are things I am reasonably sure of, but please take it with a grain of salt as no real translator was involved!
The story concept started with the keywords 'aliens, fishing, high school students'. That was about the time Atsuya Uki made the first designs.
Tsuritama is Ohno's first animated work, he comes from live action television.
Nakamura decided on the broad strokes of the story and Ohno was the one fleshing it all out.
Ohno is the type who likes to throw the themes straight at the viewer and that was something Nakamura reigned him in on.
The mood of Tsuritama was to be kept 'fluffy' (funwari), that was a key at all times.
The concept of the water rising around Yuki when he gets nervous was Ohno's idea and he was really impressed by how it translated into animation from the talented animation staff.
Ohno doesn't actually know why Nakamura picked fishing at the theme. Most of the staff had never fished before so they studied up in a hurry.
If I'm understanding this correctly, the location of the story was decided based on the fishing conditions and it was Ohno who decided on Enoshima after long deliberation.
Nakamura decided that Yuki would be a quarter French. His hair color being different from everyone around him is part of what makes it so difficult for him to communicate and connect.
To Ohno, Haru is an idol-like character, a guy like the sun who you wouldn't normally meet.
The name 'Agarkar' for Akira was probably just picked by looking up famous Indian surnames.
It was Ohno's idea to have Coco combine accents from all over.
He says none of the boys are in a mental place where they can have a romance yet, so unless there is a Tsuritama 2 there can't be any romantic subplots.
His favourite character is Haru. Meanwhile Yuki reminds him a little of his own younger self.
The DUCK pose is meant to resemble a duck. It took a lot of tries to come up with it because nobody was really sure what kind of pose the director was envisioning.
He wanted a lot more subplots that couldn't make it in with the restricted time. For example, he wanted an episode where they work parttime at a beach house and Yuki makes a handmade lure for Natsuki to use at a fishing tournament. But the lure is thrown away and they fight...
Ayumi wasn't initially planned to have such a big role, but it just happened naturally and now he is indispensable for Yuki's growth and the whole series.
In the initial idea, Haru didn't have a planet to return to and was simply wandering the universe... but that was scrapped to maintain the fluffy and less serious feeling the director envisioned.
The scene in episode 8 in which Yuki confesses to Kate that he was lonely was called a 'graduation ceremony' among the stuff. He is graduating from being dependent on Kate and can finally stand on his own - after seeing this, Kate collapses. But of course, nobody was to die, so she gets discharged again.
There were a ton of details that never made it into the show. Since Kate is French, there was an idea for Yukit to have a French middle name. Natsuki and Erika are cousings. Natsuki listens to grunge rock. Misaki was an occults enthusiast and would talk passionately about the Bermuda triangle and the existence of DUCK. There was also no time to include the story of Yuki's parents leaving. Akira didn't have any friends in high school and is still a little sore about that - that's why he was so shocked when Natsuki asserts that he doesn't have any friends in Episode 5.
Episode 8 is when Ohno thinks the friendship arc between the boys completed, which is also helped by Yuki talking openly to Kate and Natsuki talking openly to his father.
In episode 10, when he is helped back to Enoshima, Yuki for the first time realized that there were always people helping him along and that realization makes him grow up majorly. Yuki starts the series with his heart closed, but by episode 10 he is trying to be the one to open Haru's heart while Haru is trying to carry the burden all by himself.
