In Women's History Month, I want to draw attention to how sad it is to see the misogyny and lack of information in many of the posts on this app. Yes, it's fiction, but that doesn't mean it has to be so degrading and exclusionary in many aspects. I can see how many storylines focus on the pleasure of the male character and his desires instead of focusing on the feelings, health, or dignity of the female character.
In my experience, when I read some writings I often notice how male desire is prioritized over the protagonist's decision, just to fulfill fetishes or kink. This is not only disgusting, it's also dangerous. Because we are normalizing violence between couples or romantic partners. We are taking it as normal to let him disregard your boundaries during acts or about things that put your health and life at risk.
No, it's not hot when he ejaculates inside her when the protagonist told him just the tip. No, it's not cute when he hides her birth control pills when she's taking them, this could be a risk to your safety and your body. And someone who loves you doesn't put you in that situation just to fulfill a whim. No, it's not cute when he calls or texts desperately to find out where you are and who you're with; that's toxic control, and it's unpleasant. No, it's not nice when he gets all positive and doesn't let you interact with your friends or other people (usually men). It's harmful and a warning sign of why he doesn't want you to be happy and surrounded by people who love you.
Let's not normalize these acts, which, although they may seem small, are full of meaning and weigh heavily when interacting with other people. You may not feel it now, but everything you read or consume is shaping your brain and, therefore, your behavior and what you allow or do not allow in your daily lives. Let's learn to say no to these kinds of narratives that only teach us how to please them and think about how they will feel without taking into account our desires and limits.
And this is just the tip of the iceberg, there is much more to work on and change; there's also how they represent female characters, how their physical features are described, how their minds are described, how they present their tastes or their way of expressing themselves, how they interact with other characters, how they act with the character of interest. There is a lot to raise awareness about.
Yes, this is fanfiction, but it's not an excuse to be openly misogynistic, sexist, racist, homophobic, xenophobic, ethnophobic, fatphobic, classist or to defend violent attitudes. Let's inform ourselves before writing something that could awaken something sensitive and very strong in someone else who may not have the same privilege as us or the same level of maturity to be able to Identify them and decide whether they want to interact with them or not.
We interact consciously with these types of content, taking care not to copy them or let them become mixed with what is true respect and love.
A big hug and I wish you all the best. Thank you.
