I’ve always viewed Ted as like a more passive homophobic, he won’t scream slurs or beat Mike if he came out as gay but he might pull away until Mike barely has a father anymore

Also. Parts of the fandom want to talk about how unrealistic Will coming out and being supported by everyone in the room is yet also deny that the American-dream-white-man Wheeler could and most likely WOULD be homophobic 😭

(Also also I’ve had big thoughts about how this very subtle homophobia is why Mike has a harder time with queer clarity than Will did, Lonnie and his beliefs are obvious enemies, his family and his friends hate that man, Ted is still Mike’s dad and he’s done no real big wrongs to him)

It is, actually. You guys are constantly trying to decide what's best for El without actually paying attention to El. She has no problems saying when she's uncomfortable. If she didn't like that kiss, she would have said so. It's not ableism to say that maybe Mike could have explained without kissing her (although El learns best through demonstration and he was having trouble articulating his words). It is ableism to try to dictate what El should or shouldn't be comfortable with despite what El herself has repeatedly said she's wanted.

The concern you guys have for El does not come from a place of wanting what's best for her. You are forcing your incorrect assumptions onto her despite what her canon behavior is telling you. That is absolutely ableism and infantilizing.

Additionally, kindly tag posts like these Anti Mileven. It's fandom courtesy especially on Tumblr.

I never said El couldn’t express discomfort or didn’t want affection. My point is that cognitive ability and social/emotional development aren’t the same thing, and El had JUST come out of extreme isolation and trauma. That creates a huge gap in experience and understanding, especially in something as complicated as romantic relationships.

Saying she might not have been ready for a relationship that quickly isn’t me trying to deny her agency or dictating what she’s allowed to want. I’m acknowledging context and pacing. A person can want something and still not fully understand the situation they’re in yet, especially when they’ve had no normal social development and the only person guiding them is also a kid figuring things out.

Someone can have agency and be vulnerable at the same time. Someone can genuinely want something, and still be in a situation where they don’t fully understand the social or emotional implications yet

Moreover, “she didn’t object” is a very slippery slope, trust can change the context and reaction under discomfort massively, Mike was, at the time, the only person she trusted and her only source of social information. Plus, she didn’t know what a kiss was, of course she wouldn’t seem uncomfortable with something she doesn’t understand the emotional weight of

I’m not saying Mike was malicious or that El is helpless. I’m saying the situation had a big imbalance and could have gone terribly, which is part of why it’s worth discussing.
