I feel like if Hazel didn't die he woulda been a good foil for Yang as an antagonist

yeah well all of WTCH are set up as foils for RWBY in some way or another

Yang and Hazel are both characters who are motivated primarily over care of their siblings, fight primarily with their fists and have Semblances that relate to pain (Yang builds up energy with every hit she takes and uses it to get stronger, while Hazel blocks out pain to bulldoze his way forwards without feeling anything). both also have anger as a major character trait, but Yang's in control of her temper and manages it while Hazel lets it blind him

Blake and Tyrian are both Faunus who have been involved in criminal activity and are stealth specialists, and have both been involved in what are basically cults of personality (with Adam and Salem, respectively). the difference is Blake left while Tyrian bought in entirely

Weiss and Watts are both Atlesian, both very full of themselves when we meet them, both are the glass cannons of their respective teams, and the JLxRWBY movies actually set up Weiss as the tech specialist of RWBY, which again parallels Watts. the difference is Watts is Atlesian to the core and threw an enormous tantrum and threw in when he didn't get the respect and admiration he felt he was owed by Ironwood and threw in with Salem out of spite, while Weiss eventually got over not being treated like the Specialest Girl in the World after she wasn't made leader of the team, and she continually defies the expectations of other Atlesians (plus, Weiss has a unique hereditary Semblance which is a lot more technical than most Semblances, while Watts doesn't have a Semblance at all and relies solely on his technical ability)

Ruby and Cinder are both the youngest members of their respective groups, both wield special powers (in fact, Ruby has Silver Eyes which directly combats Cinder's Grimm attachment), both generally wear their hair kinda short (the only time Cinder didn't was during Beacon era, where she was undercover and emulating Salem with her whole vibe), Ruby's eyes are silver while Cinder's are close to gold, so there's some colour contrast there. Ruby is collaborative and good at coordinating with others, while Cinder uses others as 'assets'. Ruby's trying to save everyone while Cinder's only trying to save herself. and so on, you could go on forever
