@gaskills said : " i'm not scared of you. "
breath comes in ragged gasps and blackness dances around the edges of the outlawβs vision. it takes considerable effort to keep himself from tumbling off of the crate upon which he sits β but arthur somehow manages. it always happens suddenly ; heβll be fine one minute, and the next heβs wracked by those goddamn coughing fits. itβs going to be the death of him.
he remains leaned over, mouth still buried against the crook of his elbow. arthur knows what he will see on his sleeve when he pulls away. it never gets any easier to deal with, never any easier to see, and sometimes he wonders what the point of it all is these days.
it is the feeling of a hand suddenly stroking his back that gets his attention. arthur lifts up just a bit and turns slightly, glancing over at the woman now standing next to him : mary beth.
she doesnβt need to be here. she doesnβt need to stand this close to him. not like this.
β it ainβt safe for you standinβ over here. donβt you know that? β the words arenβt uttered with as much conviction as they could be though, and that is only solidified when mary beth utters those five words : iβm not scared of you.
his chest tightens, and this time, it isnβt from the sickness. no, in its own way, this hurts even worse.
he sighs, turning away from her again. mary beth gaskill, loyal and lovely to a fault β arthur isnβt sure whether it makes him want to laugh or cry. β just donβt want tβ get you sick, β arthur murmurs, the words quiet and raw. mary beth may want to be a stubborn fool by staying close to him, but heβs going to do his best to make sure she stays safe.
sheβs in denial. mary beth canβt accept the fact that arthur is sick, even though she knows it to be true. . . it just wonβt register itself in her mind. the realisation hits her in fleeting moments of an overwhelming sickness deep in her stomach, flawing her when her thoughts whisper and jibe that the possibility of living without him might come sooner than sheβd like to understand or accept. she canβt confide in the other girls β they donβt know that arthur is so ill.
itβs no secret that something was going on with the outlaw, but everyone seemed to be so plagued with their own problems that they didnβt give it much thought at all β and that riled her. arthur deserved to have everyone fussing and taking care of him, but who was? who was looking out for him, when he looked out for all of them?
with her hand soothing over his back gently, she blinks away the stinging sensation from her eyes. witnessing one of these episodes up close was far more harrowing than she had ever anticipated β and it sent her mind racing. βiβm not going to get sick, arthur. donβt worry about me.β mary beth coos softly, taking ahold of his arm gently once he stands to his feet. sheβs quick to grab him a glass of water in her own cup, handing it over carefully as she urges him to sit down once more.
βiβve been thinking, arthur. thinking real hard. . .β what was she thinking? the words that she knew would fall from her lips no matter the consequences that would follow would either be a grave mistake or the best risk she had ever taken. she never took herself for much of a gambler, but mary beth was certain that she would risk almost everything and anything for arthur morgan.
βwhat if we got out of here? found somewhere warm and dry, a decent bed. . . somewhere for you to get better.β
despite it all.

@shinemade asked β you alright? youβre not hurt, are you? β
sheβd gotten carried away again. gotten too sure of herself, overconfident in her abilities. in many ways she felt like she had something to prove. that if she could just take one big score back to camp, all their problems would vanish. riding back from saint denis to camp with her pockets stuffed with all they could carry, she couldnβt help but feel spooked out in the bayou. sheβd heard the stories of the people who lurked there under the cover of darkness, what they were capable of β what they could possibly do. the decent and respectable men of the camp would all be furious when they realised that sheβd ridden back alone. . . but that was an issue for a later date.
as luck would have it, she was almost out of the woods when her horse had gotten spooked by something nearby. before she knew it, mary beth had been bucked straight off and fallen into the swampy ground beneath her. the immediate sting of her bones aching beneath her skin caused her to suck in a sharp breath, leaning to her knees when she heard a rustle nearby β her heart practically leaping out of her chest. instead of seeing what she had feared the most, she was faced with a redhead that couldnβt have been much older than she.
βoh, no. no. . . iβm okay. my damn horse got spooked, bucked me off and ran.β she sighed softly as she rose to her feet, making sure to check that she hadnβt lost anything in the fall. taking a good look at the woman before her, she knew well enough to know that she was a fighter β could handle herself and others when she needed to. whether it was a misjudgement on her part to trust her, she would soon come to realise. βi donβt suppose youβre heading anywhere near shady belle, are yaβ?β

β itβs wanting that gets so many folks in trouble. β β it ainβt no secret i didnβt get these scars falling over in church. β β if you win power, remember why you wanted it. β β you do a man wrong, heβll shoot you for it. you do a man rightβ¦well, he still may shoot you for it. β β trust me. thereβs things youβre better off not knowing. β β you remind me a lot of myself. how i used to be. stubborn and angry. β β i hope you will give me some warning if you get the sudden urge to kill me. β β my side wasnβt chosen. my side was given. β β a little sore, but apart from a couple extra scars, it will be as nothing happened. β β i donβt think youβre a bad person. a little stupid perhaps, but not rotten. β β i certainly donβt mind you asking, if you donβt mind me not telling. β β you are being deliberately obscure as a substitute for having a personality. β β so do tell me, have you needlessly risked your life since we last spoke? β β i came into this world fighting. and iβll go out of it fighting. β β i hear you speak and suddenly i'm reminded of how the people i respected most in my life had a problem with authority. β β you're looking much better. considering you were almost buzzard food a couple days ago. β β power is like a drink. the more you have, the more you want. β β people donβt forget. nothing gets forgiven. β β sometimes in the service of what is right, you got to do terrible things. β β you have quite a story. i really am a little jealous. β β old friends make the worst enemies. β β i had everything, and gave it up in the pursuit of nothing. β β hah. you were always bad at lying. β β iβm not going to stand by and watch good people suffer. β β some trees flourish, others die. some cattle grow strong, others are taken by wolves. some men are born rich enough and dumb enough to enjoy their lives. ain't nothing fair. you know that. β β if you find yourself in a hole, the first thing to do is stop digging. β β now, if you don't mind, i'd hate to spoil such a beautiful afternoon on such beautiful land with any further unpleasantries. β β i, too, have a family, friend. and so that we may see our families again i suggest we part ways amicably. β β sometimes i tell myself that everything happens for a reason. β β i see the good in everybody. itβs a flaw of mine. β β well, try not to get yourself killed. β β see if you can keep your gun holstered for once. β β i donβt pay much attention to rumors. β β i swear, if it was down to me, iβd never have gone anywhere. β β lock all the doors. whatever happens, donβt come outside. you hear me? whatever happens. β β what would you care? iβm just a nuisance to you anyway. β β iβve been hearing some things about you. β β i would rather be dead than a cynic like you. β β damn, a little gratitude wouldnβt kill you. β β trust me, i ainβt no hero. β β as it turns out, it's you or me. the way i see it, might as well be you. β β you live in a dream world. it ainβt like they tell it in books. β β iβm asking you to do what i say, before you get yourself killed. β β those who sit on the fence make a choiceβ¦in their own way. β β iβd do anything for you, you know that. β β better watch your mouth, my friend. i've cut out a man's tongue for less. β β there's nothing worse than a nobody thinking he's a somebody. β β you got it all wrong. iβve always loved you, even now. β β what the hell were you thinking, going off on your own? β β first impressions are hard to erase. β β itβs a long story. too long to tell without a drink in my hand. β β iβm not angry. iβm disappointed. β β you know me. iβll be late to my own funeral. β β that tone of voice ainβt so becoming on you. makes you seem all pent up and angry. β β you think i donβt know who you are. β β why donβt i get a warm and tender embrace? β β what do you want me to say? yippee? β β thereβs always a choice. youβre just too blind to see. β β youβre not ready for that yet. one step at a time. β β every time you go off, i worry youβre not coming back. β β it didnβt have to be this way. β β come on now. try to look on the bright side. β
