Sokkla Saturdays 2021 - Prompt Suggestion Stage

To all Sokkla fans and content creators, Sokkla Saturdays are back for 2021! We will have prompts prepared for every Saturday in October and November for a total of nine weeks of Sokkla Saturdays. You are free to participate in this event through fanfiction, fanarts, edits and any content you wish to create to celebrate the amazing potential, dynamics and chemistry between our favorite pair, Sokka and Azula.

We will begin the preparation for this event by gathering prompts: please follow the link above and add any prompts and ideas you'd like to see in the upcoming Sokkla Saturdays. You can add as many prompts as you wish to, but make sure NOT to write over anyone else's ideas, as this is a shared doc meant for everyone to use.

The deadline for adding prompts to the spreadsheet will be July 31st. Afterwards, we'll hold the poll to select the top prompts and distribute them for each Saturday. Once we've assigned the prompts we'll have a lengthy period to prepare our content and the Sokkla Saturdays 2021 event will begin on October 2nd!

Sorry for bothering you two but I have a serious question.

So the city of Minneapolis council has voted in the majority to disband its police department for more funding to support poverty recovery, mental health and other social programs. I agree with the latter part but I have some concerns that it would end up rewarding people for unlawful actions such as domestic violence.

Are these legitimate concerns or am I in the wrong here? And what is your opinion on this topic?

Azula and the Issue of Diagnosis- an Essay Which No One Asked For

With the avatar fandom resurgence, I want to talk more in depth about something that I’m noticing an increase of with the increased interest in the show- and that is the occasionally troubling, sometimes deeply ableist, issue of diagnosing of Azula.

What I tend to see most frequently is the use of words like “psychopath” and “sociopath,” often followed by “psychotic” or “narcissist.” Occasionally I’ll see someone refer to her as “schizophrenic,” and perhaps most troubling of all are the people using ableist slurs against her like “psycho” or “lunatic.” Even words like “crazy” in this context are a bit bothersome- it’s not a word I’m going to advocate banning from the English language, but directing it towards a character who’s visibly mentally ill has an unfortunate side effect of continuing to perpetuate stigma against mental illness.

It’s not cute.

So we’re going to talk about this today. Let’s talk about Azula, diagnosis, and mental illness.

My background

Before we deep dive, however, I want to state this plainly. I have a master’s degree in clinical psychology, and I am currently a second-year doctoral student in a clinical psychology PhD program. I’ve been in school a total of five years post-bachelor’s degree specializing in this field. I work in my school’s training clinic and have active therapy cases with a wide variety of diagnoses. I have patients who were easy to diagnose and patients where it took several months to decide what the most accurate label was. Like many mental health professionals, I have also had my own struggles with my mental health which I am not going to disclose today. But I have been in out of my own therapy since I was a teenager. In short, while I am still a trainee and still operate under the license of a supervising clinician, I know what I’m talking about.

Thank you for this. This was very informative, and yes, I, too, am very disappointed with how they’ve handled Azula’s character in the comics. 

I’ve always thought that Azula’s breakdown would not be something that she would let define her (unlike the comics). Azula had a lot of stressors in book 3 and was overwhelmed. The lack of food, sleep, healthy coping mechanisms, mental and emotional support led to her breakdown, but she was also a child who was smart and tenacious and relatively open-minded. Let her sleep it off for two weeks, have someone teach her, let her gain more life experience. She would bounce back. 

Really loved this statement from the essay:

These kids need help, not shame, and Azula, were she a real person, would be no different. It’s also worth considering that Azula is a woman of color, and we need to consider her culture and background- is she really so mentally ill when she was raised in a culture that reinforced her aggression and fostered low empathy in all of its soldiers?

One last question before you go! If Korra and Asami were to have a baby the natural way, how would they go about?

Hm, I’ve never really thought about this.  I think it would be pretty neat if they could convince Mako to be the sperm donor, since both Korra and Asami have had a relationship with him, and obviously they all love and trust each other.  I think Asami would be the one to carry the baby (and no, not because she’s more classically “feminine” or anything like that - do not even start this shit with me, I know how Tumblr is), because Korra is the Avatar and repeatedly needs to be in a position to put her life at risk.  If Korra were to carry a child, it may hinder her responsibilities as the Avatar.  Anyway, this is just what’s coming to my head right now.  What do you think?

I’d say they would go with the adoption route. There’s so many children that have lost their parents and have no one to raise them, particularly in the Battle of Republic City against Kuvira. I can imagine they found a child or two in a similar position to Mako and Bolin and would take them in.

Of course, it would be hilarious if they would ask Mako to be the sperm donor; and very interesting in the actual act of doing so. 😜 Maybe someone should write a lemon of that...

My brain, immediately after the “Aang won’t take no for an answer” post:

Actually, I thought a bit more about this: If Aang is “grandpa figure who won’t fucking stop teaching Zuko to be a better and more spiritually fulfilled person,” then what is Iroh doing?

And then it hit me.

Iroh: *sitting in a teahouse at a paisho table* Iroh, deadpan: I must capture the last airbender.  Iroh: It is the only way to make sure the powe rof the Avatar won’t be turned on the Fire Nation. Iroh: Only then will I be redeemed in the eyes of the Fire Lord for my failure at Ba Sing Se. Iroh: … Iroh: Anyway, it’s your turn.

About half of the B plots are just Iroh finding new ways to feign incompetence and bad luck so that his political watchdog can’t prove that he’s letting Aang - and by extension Zuko - get away.

i think about this post all the time and if i may, i would like to suggest keeping the banished royalty angle for zuko.

he was the eldest son of fire lord sozin, who knew the avatar was the greatest threat to the fire nation, but also knew the new one would be a firebender and he couldn’t exactly merc his own people, now could he? but he always planned to order a convenient little assassination on whoever the new avatar turned out to be and in the meantime took out the air temples so that avatar couldn’t learn the next element in the cycle. of course, when it turns out to be his son, sozin, stellar dad that he is, thinks “if you want something done right” and shoots a fire blast at his firstborn.

zuko enters the avatar state, blows up half the palace, etc etc as one does, gets a nasty scar for his trouble, and escapes, hence why he was hanging out far enough south to necessitate katara and sokka cracking open a cold boy a century later.

all this is to say 1. i think it’s a good way to maintain zuko’s background and characterization in an au like this and 2. it leads to a secret second roleswap

because this makes zuko iroh’s uncle.
