Shassie writers LISTEN UPPP Gus would ENCOURAGE Shawn!!!!! A token word of protest at most!!! He’d high five Shawn for kissing just about anybody (except Gus’ own sister)!!! Frankly the two of them have a pattern of wingmanning by competition. Show me Gus who, regardless of actually wanting Lassie (or even men in general, that’s even funnier) winks at him before he pulls Shawn away. Show me ally!Gus who knows more about the queer community than Shawn and Lassie combined. Show me confident in his sexuality Gus who agrees with Shawn that Lassie looks good—even in front of Lassie. Show me Gus who third wheels so hard that Lassie isn’t even sure if he’s falling for Shawn, or Shawn-and-Gus. Show me Gus who debates, in depth, whether Lassie is good in bed/on dates/kinky/whatever. It’s what our world needs.
My favorite is writing a distraught Shawn agonizing over telling Gus because they’ve never really had the “I’m gay” conversation, and like he knows Gus is rational but also it’s 2000 whatever the fuck and he’s nervous!!! Then it finally comes out and Gus is like ??? Shawn you haven’t been in the closet since you could form sentences. I thought you were just really open about being bi- yes Shawn, you are bisexual, do I need to explain everything to you??? Please.
Psych is such a weird show bc in a lot of ways it's constantly asking, "can you forgive your father? even tho he could never forgive you, can you forgive him?" and the thing he could never forgive you for was not meeting his exact very specific expectations. And the answer keeps being yes you can, because not doing so is worse. You tried and it hurt more. You tried and it made you more miserable. You forgive him because he's all you have most of the time, and its somehow less complicated than whatever you have going on with your mom. You can forgive him but you can't forget, and then one day he realizes that he was wrong and there was nothing he should have taken as a slight about you, but you both just never acknowledge this paradigm shift in your relationship bc it'd be more awkward then fighting again for the millionth time. So things get better but you never say why, you never acknowledge it unless forced and somehow you forgive him more than your mom who you were never even half as mad at.
But also it's about breaking and entering into sea world and making a janitor think you killed your best friend so you can escape, it's about gaslighting your coworkers into thinking you are the dumbest man alive, it's about only closing a mystery when it's as funnt as possible and making sure everyone else around you is as baffled as possible. It's about childhood and nostalgia and growing up in the most chaotic way you can. It's about people being killed with a t-rex skull, it's about slapstick and committing to the bit and being the silliest messiest bisexual on tv in 2006-2014.
It's about a son and his father and forgiveness and somehow also they are in a circus tent trying to find out why a corpse was launched from a cannon. And also there's an extended musical episode that makes it onto my personal Spotify year after year

I am VERY afraid that I am a trans man, like fully all the way a boy. I’ve always been non binary and go through public life as such, but I’m at the point where for the sake of my own mental health I need to start doing some kind of physical transition. And it scares me because my wife is a lesbian and I know she would not love me the same. Our entire dynamic would change. Even just top surgery would put her off of me, I think. She’s told me every time it’s come up that she doesn’t like men, and she’d certainly love me still but. But.
I think it’s going to come down to either I transition and loose her or I stay like this and live with a low grade of misery 24/7. It just sucks, man.

Guys if you want queer shit written by queers on our own terms you're going to have to start seeking out weird independent media. I'm sorry that's the only place you can regularly find it idk what to tell you, we can't keep acting like there's nothing if we're not getting blockbusters and triple A titles or whatever it is we're waiting around for. The thing you keep saying you want is already being offered for free by one person making a passion project on the internet and you would both benefit enormously if you interacted with it instead of lamenting that the only options we have for representation are pandering afterthoughts from corporate shit
I say this with so, so much care: Real queer shit written by real queers can and will sometimes make you uncomfortable. That's one of the defining features of weird, independent queer media. And weird independent media more broadly. Art that comes from true individual passion and authenticity has edges and bite to it that mass market corporate products intentionally do not. Has a rawness that can offend.
You are allowed to feel uncomfortable about it. But don't ask for queers to self censor for your comfort.
My memory of The Birdcage (1996) is always that it's more dated and more difficult to watch than it actually is. You hear "drag-themed comedy from the 90s based on a musical from the 80s based on a play from the 70s" and you brace yourself just a little, right? But the film has a strong gay perspective, so the fruity fag jokes mostly come off as warmly affectionate. There is a surprising amount of poignancy in Robin Williams' portrayal of Armand, grudgingly agreeing to his beloved son's request that he go back into the closet for an evening ("do me a favor and don't talk to me for a while"). The drag club's staff attempting to redecorate the apartment with stuff straight people might like (a taxidermy moose head, an enormous crucifix, and Playboy magazine) is extremely funny. Albert's histrionics are a point of tension because he does often come off as a stereotypically pathetic/comic figure, but towards the end of the movie he makes it very clear that he's aware of how people see him, and asserts that trying to copy a stoic masculinity he doesn't possess for the sake of social approval would be more pathetic. In the 1983 musical adaptation, they give "Albert" (Albin) the only good song in the whole show, "I Am What I Am", which Gloria Gaynor covered to the delight of gays everywhere. Apparently Nathan Lane wasn't (publicly) out yet in 1996, which is amazing because it means that at one point in this movie you're watching a gay man playing a straight man playing a gay man playing a straight man, in a movie about how it's important to be yourself, an absurdity that does seem to encapsulate the state of gay America in the 90s.
I'm seeing a couple of posts circulating about the gay 90s and this movie. The above is a very good summary, and I think it's worth adding a few other points.
This movie got made because Robin Williams said yes to it (and it's important that Gene Hackman did as well). Williams in the 90s was a mega-star of a type that's not present in the current media environment (maybe Tom Cruise, but I personally think that's echo from his salad days). Even his flops made money on the back end in the video rental market, which also doesn't exist anymore (streaming is different). Hackman was on the other side of his A-list career but still Hollywood nobility if not full royalty.
Playing gay was considered career suicide in the 90s. There had been a number of actors who put lie to that belief stretching back decades, but this was Williams and Hackman (yes, being on screen next to a gay character was enough to get you blacklisted) saying "screw that" and doing it anyway.

Nathan Lane had a really nice gig going for himself. The Lion King put him into the Disney rep company with people like Williams, Bette Midler, and Whoopie Goldberg (check their IMBD list from the 90s--they were making bank at Disney).

I don't want to imply that this was a Sorkinized moment where everything changed because of one thing, but this was a very important movie that caused real movement in the needle on queer acceptance.
It also proved that there was a market for films with gay characters, which had the knock-on effect of gay filmmakers being able to find distributors of their gay-themed films. Which meant that more people than ever (queer and non-queer) got to see representation on-screen.
You know those romcom movies where the girl meets this guy who's very clearly bad for him but they had like, very intense chemistry and have a massive third act breakup before she moves away or something?
Then the girl is set up with some Good Man that her parents have clearly planned for her to meet during some family reunion
But during it, the OG guy comes knocking on her door begging her to take him back and they hug and kiss and make up?

And for some reason, ex looks fucking fantastic despite saying he went through so many trials just to get there
Dean is like "oh fuck, I'm the other man"
But instead of a romantic reunion, Cas slams the door on his ex's face and goes "Someone please call the police"
And now Dean, thinking they're in a romcom esc scenario, thinks he has to romance Cas to one up his ex
Not knowing Cas has been very much into Dean since they first met, and is soaking up the affections his ex never truly gave him

One of my dear beautiful friends works at a fancy restaurant I used to frequent with my mom when we’d do weekly fancy lunches, and every time I sat down she would bring me the most loaded Shirley temple you’ve ever seen without even asking me. Like 70% syrup, AT LEAST 5 cherries- the heavy syrupy dark red kind that fancy restaurants stock for fancy cocktails- I’m pretty sure she comped it as a shift drink most the time. One of the sweetest things anyone’s ever done for me. Fanciest Shirley temple I’ll ever have, the likes of which may never be experienced again.
Call me fucking crazy but I just don’t want to know about celebrities. I don’t want to know what they do in their free time, I don’t want to know who they’re dating, and I don’t want to know about their secrets. Unless someone is a direct danger to the people then I don’t care!! I don’t wanna know!! This is mostly about gooseworx and tadc but god just in general I want to stop knowing so much about people that I don’t know.
