My name is Liz, and I am a doctoral student from identityLORE: the Laboratory for Oppression, Resilience, and Empowerment at Teachers College, Columbia University. I research the experiences of adults with learning disabilities. Specifically, looking at experiences of stigma and discrimination.  If you are eligible, please take my current survey and pass it along! I dunno if this is helpful to other college kids with learning disabilities here’s a real quick list of the things that help me the most with attention retention/motivation around homework: 

If possible, don’t work in your room/bed. Change your working environment. If you have a common room that works (which is the case for me) use that. If not, try and find a relatively quiet (and ideally well/brightly lit space. This might just be a me thing, but natural light works best?) 

If you can’t leave your room for whatever reason, change what you can. What helps me is opening my windows, not laying down in bed, sitting in my desk chair, etc…

If you don’t need your technology, leave it as far away from you as humanly possible, since it can be a huge distraction 

If you take meds like I do, keeping a regular schedule of when you take them and at what doses you take them REALLY helps 

When possible, don’t just work in huge chunks without breaks. I usually try and go with a 60 minutes of work, 30 minutes of break, but everyone works differently. 

If you can, try and move around during your breaks. Maybe do some stretches, take a quick walk, or go get food. 

Plan ahead of time. I have an INCREDIBLY difficult time with planning when to do work and with sticking to a schedule, but I’ve found that when I remember to block out chunks of time in a google calendar, it can really help me, especially with out it sends reminders. 

Reward yourself in between/after work for staying on task. I usually reward myself with tea, getting into my bed, having a snack, or taking a break to do social media/TV things I like. 

Don’t punish yourself if you don’t do well/mismanage time/don’t get work done. Try and figure out what the problem was so you can work on it. I often get into a tailspin of getting super upset and anxious when I struggle to achieve my goals, and it is a super upsetting thing, but taking a step back and trying to remember that some days are harder than others is really helpful.

i felt like you once: that my brain wasn’t  good enough, 

shouldn’t publish,  even type, 

my words were green and never ripe, 

their taste was strong but not quite right, 

and i’d roll around in bed at night, 

thinking someone  else must feel this too, 

like a caged gorilla in the zoo, 

without the ability to  speak, to say: 

“somebody get me the hell outta here, 

i want to lift the lid of my skull,  

pull out my brain,  kick it through some goal posts,

throw it into a river, 

spit on it,”

and so i started to  write stuff like that

with common words like these,

didn’t edit so much, 

published them myself, 

and discovered i wasn’t alone

and you’re not either: 

Stephen Spielberg,  Pablo Picasso, 

they’re dyslexic too, 

and others like them  feel the way you do,

so write your words no matter the taste, 

alternate spellings,  grammatical quirks, 

there’s no ‘right way’ to put down words,

and while the rest of  us follow literary rules of

punctuation,  spelling, 

while predicates follow subjects, 

your rebel brain’s ahead of all of it,  leading the revolt,  making its own rules, 

and i must admit i’m  jealous because 

my similes and metaphors

will never be as original as the art of a woman with her own dictionary.

Hello, It's a shame that only people of at least age 18, and living in the US are eligible. I would've loved to participate. I have been diagnosed with ADHD 4-5 years ago, and still am required to take medication throughout the entirety of my academic education years. Including higher ed. I hope to find you conducting an LD research one day that includes ages 14 -19 It is often that that age group is neglected especially if they have been diagnosed years prior.

Hello! I meet your criteria, except that I'm not currently enrolled in school, but I am in the process of applying to grad schools. If your studies are open long enough, I may still be able to participate? I made it through undergrad (somehow) before I was diagnosed, but was diagnosed before I took the GRE and will be able to access accommodations in school. Glad to help, since there is not enough research out there to help people like me!

Hi Elizabeth! I would love to participate in your study, so I want to make sure I am eligible. My disability is cerebral palsy, which isn't technically a learning disability (although it does require academic accommodations such as extra testing time). Should I still do the survey? Thanks for clarifying!

Unfortunately the study is only looking for people diagnosed with LDs specifically, but thank you for your interest!!
