this line hits so much harder when you think about how the last time we saw nikola before he went into hiding, his assistant turned out to be a nazi spy and pretty much shattered nikola’s faith in humanity and also himself, because he liked him, and because he liked how his assistant seemed to look up to him, even stroking his ego about cracking the enigma code. so he didn’t see it quickly enough, and he disappeared because he couldn’t face helen knowing he’d put her in danger because he trusted a morally fallible human, and maybe deep down he also thought his own human side was at fault, that maybe if he was more like his vampire ancestors he wouldn’t have let this happen. hell, there wouldn’t even be any war or any nazis at all if the vampires were still in power.

so he comes up with this grand plan to restore the vampire race, and he convinces himself that this will make everything alright, that helen will forgive him (even though she never actually blamed him in the first place) and help him fix everything by overthrowing human civilization and returning the vampires to dominance. it’s not until he meets afina and realizes the vampires were never any better than he finally gives up the idea completely (ironically afina had that one line about how humans are inferior bc they still spend all their time fighting amongst themselves etc, so nikola has more self awareness than she does at this point lmao).

also not really related but when nikola first shows up at the beginning of the episode helen doesn’t actually look particularly shocked, almost like deep down she’s been waiting for him to resurface at some point and now that he has it’s only a question of finding out why (more specifically, what he’s up to this time lol)

i really love the reveal at the end of edward that robbie has the same freakishly amazing artistic talent as his brother bc it completely recontextualizes edward’s talent. edward is autistic, so for most of the episode he comes across as the savant stereotype; but then robbie comes in and shows himself to have the same talent, only he’s not autistic. which means edward isn’t an autistic savant, he’s an incredible artist who also happens to be autistic. it’s a subtle but important distinction and as someone without any savant-level abilities to speak of i really appreciate that kind of representation
