Iโm so glad you love Maggie as much as me because now I can share this mundane headcanon about her: so, that line in the book where Maggie says sheโd kind wished sheโd had a daughter because sheโd be easier to understand, I always hcโd that maybe Maggie grew up with younger sisters, maybe one or two, so she knew her way around helping a little girl with her pigtails or playing bake or house. Now she has a son and sheโs like โhm, you are nothing like my sisters...letโs see how this pans out!โ
thatโs a gr8 headcanon and it tracks, given that sheโs written as your general churchgoing nuclear 50s housewife and probably has very clear-cut gendered notions that Little Boys And Little Girls Are Different. Although!!!
Iโve thought a lot about that whole bit, and it always made me kinda sad to think Maggie wished sheโd had a daughter instead - but! I was just reading it again and it actually says:
โShe found herself thinking, not for the first time, that it would have been nice if she and Went could have had a girl as wellโ
A daughter as well as Richie. That โas wellโ is crucial imo, because then we can glean that itโs NOT that she wishes sheโd never had Richie. She loves Richie, thatโs clear enough. She just thinks sheโd better understand a daughter, better be able to bond with a daughter, so I think maybe it comes from a place of feeling a little lonely in her own family as the only woman in a household where her husband does seem more able than her to vibe with Richieโs weirdness.
I bet 80s Maggie would be so excited initially when Eddie starts coming over more for Richie to help him with homework, all the work he missed out on when Sonia kept him home from school for no reason. Eddie Kaspbrak with his polos and still-clean sneakers and neatly combed hair and his intense politeness in asking her to help bake Richie a birthday cake, his determined little insistence on following the recipes to the letter. And because itโs the 80s/90s, and sheโs still misguided about some things, sheโs like โoh, well if Richie really does love this one, then at least Iโll have a son-in-law whoโs not a total lost cause when it comes to common decencyโ until one day she sees them in the garden and Eddie is swearing like a sailor and wrestling Richie into a muddy puddle, and sheโs like for FUCKโS sake, theyโre all the same. Huffily shelves the craft project she thought Eddie might like to help her with.
Then when Richie finally brings Eddie home at 41 for Thanksgiving, Maggie watches Richie take off Eddieโs coat for him, listens to them say โweโ and โus.โ Eddie is still intense at offering cooking help, still ducks his head all bashful at Wentโs friendly questions, still combed to a chrome shine and smooth-faced unlike her possum of a son, and Maggie wonders if growing up has maybe sanded some of those lasting rough little-boy edges off from Eddie?
But then he gives Richie a wet-willie while they look at old photos in the hallway, and still has a mouth like a sailor when they think she isnโt watching them (sheโs always watching. Thatโs her sonโs happiness, sheโs invested) and she thinks, ah, no. As a child, Richie needed a race he could never win no matter how fast he talked, and Eddie needed his own starterโs pistol loud and deafening enough to give him permission to run, and they need that from each other still. She doesnโt have a daughter and she doesnโt have a daughter-in-law, but this is so much better. That Christmas Eddie opens one of his gifts from the Toziers and nearly cries

Snowball fight, Russia, 1900 by Gregor MacE on Flickr.
every word out of guillermo del toroโs mouth is the most hardcore thing iโve ever heard and he says it all so casually like he doesnโt even realize how much of a gothic visionary he isย
โSince childhood, Iโve been faithful to monsters. I have been saved and absolved by them, because monsters, I believe, are patron saints of our blissful imperfection, and they allow and embody the possibility of failingโ
I STILL THINK ABOUT THIS EVERY DAY OF MY LIFE
Yo okie Guillermo has some of the best quotes and lines Iโve ever heard, here are just a few of his quotes that have me questioning life:
โWhat is a ghost? A tragedy condemned to repeat itself time and again? A moment of pain, perhaps. Something dead which still seems to be alive. An emotion suspended in time. Like a blurred photograph. Like an insect trapped in amber.โ
โI knew that monsters were far more gentle and more desirable than the monsters living inside โnice people.โ Accepting that you are a monster gives you the leeway to not behave like one. When you deny being a monster, you behave like one.โ
โWhen you see something or experience something extraordinary, you canโt go back to normalโฆ I think that thatโs the way I see the supernatural-as happening in mundane circumstances or to people who are unpreparedโ
โTo learn what we fear is to learn who we are. Horror defines our boundaries and illuminates our soulsโ
โAny legend, any creature, any symbol we ever stumble on, already exists in a vast cosmic reservoir where archetypes wait. Shapes looming outside our Platonic cave. We naturally believe ourselves clever and wise, so advanced, and those who came before us so naรฏve and simpleโฆwhen all we truly do is echo the order of the universe, as it guides usโฆโ
And the last but certainly not the least:
โIn fairy tales, monsters exist to be a manifestation of something that we need to understand, not only a problem we need to overcome, but also they need to represent, much like angels represent the beautiful, pure, eternal side of the human spirit, monsters need to represent a more tangible, more mortal side of being human: aging, decay, darkness and so forth. And I believe that monsters originally, when we were cavemen and you know, sitting around a fire, we needed to explain the birth of the sun and the death of the moon and the phases of the moon and rain and thunder. And we invented creatures that made sense of the world: a serpent that ate the sun, a creature that ate the moon, a man in the moon living there, things like that. And as we became more and more sophisticated and created sort of a social structure, the real enigmas started not to be outside. The rain and the thunder were logical now. But the real enigmas became social. All those impulses that we were repressing: cannibalism, murder, these things needed an explanation. The sex drive, the need to hunt, the need to kill, these things then became personified in monsters. Werewolves, vampires, ogres, this and that. I feel that monsters are here in our world to help us understand it. They are an essential part of a fable.โ
itโs wild to me how there is literally ZERO correlation between what a piece of media is like and what its fanworks are like. 2014 captain america fans were out there writing poetry and full-on academic papers inside of their fics. sonic the hedgehog and my little pony fandoms are both famous for drawing fetishes youโve never even heard of. les miserables fans spent most of their energy on college aus. there is literally no consistency or observable pattern and itโs incredible
#my theory is that fanworks reflect what people found missing in the canon#so like. sonic and mlp. obviously#les miz want les amis to be happy and alive and goofing around#and uh. mcu fans want the mcu to be well-writtenย (via dicaeopolis)

thereโs a large grey area betweenย โthis creator is a misogynist/homophobe/racistโ andย โthis creator did not fully think through the implications of some of their writing choicesโ and it would be nice if people would stop to assess where in the scale between those two cases their criticism applies, instead of going for a hard zero on the first option all the time
Another clip I animated from the Harry Potter audio books for fun.
Damn this animation is smooth as fuck, good job
Hysterical, fluid animation, wonderful expressions

I revisited my Ada Lovelace piece this week:
Ada, Countess of Lovelace was born into a privileged, noble family in 1815. Like many women born into her class, she was learned in theย โladylikeโ pursuits of dancing, manners and playing the harp. However, unusually, her mother insisted upon an education that focused on mathematics and science. She grew into a social, vibrant, intelligent and inquisitive woman and enjoyed talking about scientific study and worked on her own projects. One of her friendships was with the English polymath Charles Babbage, who himself was working on building an analytical machine. In her notes, she wrote on how this machine could process Bernoulli numbers - thought by many to have been the first computer program. (Ada also wrote on how this machine could be taught to create music!)
