The sheer number of people answering a big ol’ 0 really surprised me. I really encourage everyone, but especially those folks, to find ways to be involved. Even simple things, like writing letters to incarcerated individuals.

all of these programs also include resources on getting started if you feel intimidated or have no idea where to start!

Black and Pink can connect you to LGBTQ+ and/or HIV+ individuals on the inside.

Survived + Punished has a more general list of those with whom you can correspond, and they also have other ways to be involved in defunding prisons.

Finally, Critical Resistance has even more robust resources, such as abolition newspapers, incarcerated mail programs, several local chapters, and options for direct action. Critical Resistance and Angela Davis are known to be at the forefront of the fight for prison abolition, so I can’t recommend enough.

I kind of think it is a combination of mitski being fundamentally too good and too smart for her audience, plus a lot of bad luck lol. Like from the start she was a musician's musician - this conservatory trained composer who chose to work her way up through the diy scene and obviously stood out from her peers, to the point that lorde handpicked her to be an opener on a massive tour. Which then led to more popularity + more acclaim until all of a sudden the crowds at her shows were made up of pop music fans instead of punks and she was playing late night talk shows and getting huge profiles in nytimes etc. Then she had the horrible luck to be hit with the 1 2 3 punch of amberdollars fiasco -> tiktok virality -> pandemic melting people's brains. Meanwhile she's still as smart and talented as ever except now she's just in this stupid box where no one can relate to her in a normal way at all

i think it's also important to consider the shift in her fanbase to become predominantly white and how destructive that was in terms of people understanding the themes of her music divorcing it of much of its original context by deeming songs like "your best american girl" and "strawberry blond" (incidentally, songs that became some of her most popular once she started really blowing up among the tiktok crowd) that are very clearly about the specific isolation felt by being a woman of color as being about their own experiences as white lgbt people or "sad girls." it's also a consequence of young people being unable to consume art without it being relatable/applicable to their own experiences in some way, which is a really concerning trend

If you're trans -- if you have a gender identity that doesn't exactly match the gender you were assigned at birth, regardless of whether you have transitioned or intend to and whether you're nonbinary -- and live in the US, ok and are 16 or older, you are eligible to fill out the 2022 US Trans Survey, crafted by trans people.

This is a big deal, it's the largest national trans survey and the last one was in 2015. The next one won't be for at least another five years.

There's some fairly personal questions and some heavy ones, like ones about harassment and domestic violence. They don't ask for your name or other definitively identifying information, and take steps to keep the rest of the data confidential. You can skip (most) questions you don't want to answer while filling out the rest. Data can be useful for lobbying politicians for things that are good for trans people, especially ones who are basically sympathetic but not sure they should prioritize trans issues. (In their words, "The USTS fills in some of the large gaps in research about transgender people, and it provides critical tools for researchers, policymakers, and advocates seeking to better understand the needs of transgender people and to find ways to improve their lives.") Most questions have set options, but there's also an opportunity at the end to share personal stories in your own words.

There's also a Spanish language version and Spanish speakers, people of color, older people, immigrants, those who live in rural areas, and people who are HIV+ are especially encouraged to fill it out (because when people don't it's harder to advocate for services for those people, even when people providing the services know damn well there's a lot of need.)
